COMING TOGETHER IN 2021

2021 was a very busy year for the International Academy. All events were held online throughout the year and enabled the Academy to grow its virtual global television community of Members attending the M+ Virtual Lounge and online Board & Members Meetings. The organization welcomed a record number of attendees, who were eager to catch up on Academy news, hear from industry experts, including fellow Members and International Emmy® Nominees & Winners, and network with other Members from around the world in breakout rooms. A recap of 2021 Board & Members Meetings and M+ Virtual events, with video excerpts, follows.

MEMBER EVENTS OVERVIEW

Board & Members Meetings

Held quarterly, Board & Members Meetings are the opportunity for Members to gather, network and stay up to date on substantive topics about the media & entertainment industry. Each meeting features leading figures from all sectors of the content business. Each Member is welcome to invite one guest.

M+ Virtual

The online edition of our M+ Lounge is a virtual session designed to provide a setting for International Academy Members, and their guests, to network with one another and hear from a guest speaker or two. Each member is welcome to bring up to three industry guests to join in and network.

Academy Day

Academy Day is a high-level, membersonly 4 day event designed to shine a spotlight on the culture and media industry of a specific region and foster a better understanding of regional business models and cultural institutions to help facilitate cross border collaboration. It is a customized event hosted by an Academy Partner which offers members an exclusive opportunity to take a deep-dive into the television industry of a specific region, and network with leading executives and officials of that region. The next Academy Day, hosted by Ay Yapim, is set to take place in Istanbul, Turkey in the Spring of 2023.

Bela Bajaria, Global Head of TV, Netflix talked to Nellie Andreeva, Co-Editor in Chief, Deadline Hollywood about Netflix’s global strategy for local originals and growth in different regions and countries around the world, using recent examples of hits such as Bridgerton, the Queen’s Gambit and Lupin. She also discussed her approach in finding and working with local storytellers in Asia, Latin America, Europe and beyond and Netflix’s diversity & inclusion efforts there.

Covering Covid: In Conversation with 2021 International Emmy® News Nominees. Moderated by Neil Shapiro, President & CEO, WNET Group. September 17, 2021

International Emmy® News Nominees Dominique Van Heerden, Senior Foreign Producer, Sky News and Cristiana Sousa Cruz, Executive Producer Jornal Nacional, TV Globo, joined Academy Director Neil Shapiro for a discussion about covering Covid and the challenges of managing a news organization during a health crisis, while protecting the journalists on the front lines and the production crews at home or in the studio. They also addressed the challenges posed by the political climate around the world, especially in Brazil.

Our first M+ speakers of 2021 talked about the creative and production journey behind their compelling programs Delhi Crime and #Martyisdead, and how they have seen the television business transform rapidly in recent years as streamers are offering more opportunities for producers. They also touched upon the challenge and responsibility of telling stories about serious issues that affect people in their everyday lives, such as the real events depicted in Delhi Crime or fictionalized ones, but based on true events, told in #Martyisdead.

Finally, he adressed the organization’s progamming strategy, new strands of production, and IP accross different genres and age groups.

Academy Member Nicolas Atlan, President, Gaumont USA, talked about his company’s production strategy and the various recent and upcoming Gaumont shows produced in different languages for multiple broadcasters and streamers, including a new kids animation film with Sir Paul McCartney titled High in the Clouds. He also touched on the challenges of producing during the pandemic in Latin America.
