hello, my name is ien and i’m currently a student at the university of waterloo school of architecture. i use design as a medium to transform the world i occupy, and seek to develop this medium through an insatiable love of learning. i study architecture to understand myself, the world, and to further my belief in the importance of design, as i am currently interested in the creation of space as a venue for the human experience. this portfolio contains highlights from this investigation.

in an alternate reality, or perhaps later in this one, i would like to be a photographer like time walker, or a fashion designer like yohji yamamoto, or a dancer like pina bausch, or a musician like björk. or a film director like david fincher.

GNEISSIC W A L L HOW WOULD ARCHITECTURE LOOK IF FORMED BY NATURE? This project is intended to serve as an outpatient mental health retreat center for people suffering from depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and antisocial disorders. Patients stay 3 to 14 days learning various coping mechanisms, receive therapy and physical checkups, as well as develop a social network to prevent any events which may lead to re-hospitalization. The building weaves in and out of the landscape, framing moss and trees in varying indoor and outdoor conditions. The fractallike organization allows visitors to have a prolonged sense of discovery upon arriving at the building. This discovery reflects the introspective re-discovery of the self, as outlined in the building’s program. The building emerges from the landscape as an extrusion of the bedrock. This extrusion has instances which vary in height to accommodate passive activities: eating, sleeping, storing and displaying objects, and sitting. The spaces between the extruded walls allows for varying social conditions: open courtyards for gather and celebration; hidden nooks for meditation or private conversations. AMBIVERT PAVILION CAN ARCHITECTURE ADAPT TO ITS SITE AND PROGRAM?

The Ambivert Pavilion is a user-controlled envelope that can accommodate a myriad of small, social gatherings. With movable louvres, users can dictate views and access points, subsequently affecting the social condition within the enclosure. A table was added to encourage standing drinking and casual conversation during the expo in which this pavilion debuted. A translucent skin on the aforementioned louvres offers a playful canvas for light and shadows: trees block sunlight and their shadows flurry across the pavilion during the day; moving silhouettes and streams of light that radiate outward invite passersby during the night. PERIPHERAL NEOPLASTIC M O D U L E

WHAT IF THE WAY WE OWNED SPACE WAS DIFFERENT? A Peripheral Neoplastic Module, “PNM”, allows a tenant’s unit to change according to their personal and economical circumstances. By offering a dynamic property line, neighbours can participate in the evolution and transformation of private and common spaces in this co-operative housing proposal. The current domestic model atomizes individuals from their neighbours. It is unsustainable socially, economically, and environmentally. Modern society is rapidly progressing towards a nexus of rapidly upgradeable and replaceable objects; however, the economic model and legal rigidity of owning space opposes this progression. We must ask ourselves: how long can the infrastructural systems of the 21st century last before they become harmful to posterity? Can we participate in a paradigm shift through architecture and the commodification of space? Re: Adrian Blackwell ARCH 292 Design Studio: The Grand Domestic Revolution.
