SUMMARY: Mr Utterson went for a walk with his friend Mr Enfield. He told Utterson a strange story that happened in a narrow street in the East End of London. Here appeared Mr Edward Hyde who was a strange small man, a Jekyll´s good friend. Mr Utterson started to investigate about Hyde and he discovered that Jekyll had left all his property to Edward Hyde. Utterson had not known about Hyde, so he asked for him to a friend, Dr Lanyon. He knew nothing, so Utterson asked about Hyde to Dr Jekyll. He told him he was a friend and he said him that didn´t continue to investigate on him. In October 1885 sir Danvers Carew was murdered, and the police called Mr Utterson to identify the dead man´s body. They found a letter in Carew´s hand, it was for Utterson, but it was broken. The inspector showed to Mr Utterson a walking stick, he recognized it. It was a present that he had given to Dr Jekyll on his fiftieth birthday. Then the inspector and Utterson went to Hyde´s house, but he wasn´t there.

They knew that

Hyde was the murderer of Sir Danvers Carew, so they searched everywhere for him. Utterson went to Dr Jekyll´s house and Poole took him to Jekyll´s laboratory. Utterson asked him about where is Hyde. He didn´t know and showed Utterson a piece of paper written by Edward Hyde, but it hadn´t got a postmark. Jekyll said nothing more about Hyde, so Utterson asked to Poole. He told him that anybody had come to the house to leave a message. Utterson compared the handwriting of Jekyll´s will to Hyde´s letter, the handwriting was the same.

Mr Utterson told the police that Hyde was going to Dover, but the police didn´t find him. On 8th January, Jekyll had a party and he invited Dr Lanyon and Utterson. Jekyll was happy and he laughed and talked a lot. But the happiness didn´t last, because Utterson visited Dr Jekyll´s house. Poole opened the door and said that Jekyll didn´t want to see anyone. Utterson was worried, so he wanted to talk to Dr Lanyon about Jekyll. Lanyon looked like a very old man. He was ill and sad. Dr Lanyon said Utterson that he was going to die. Utterson came back home and he wrote a note to Jekyll. The reply came from Dr Jekyll the next day. In the funeral of Lanyon there were many friends, but Henry Jekyll wasn´t there. Utterson took out all the private papers that Lanyon had left in his desk. With the papers was a private envelope for J.G. Utterson, but he couldn´t open it until the death of Henry Jekyll.
