SUMMARY: SUMMARY It was a American family that wanted to lived in an old house in England, so Mr Otis decided buy Canterville Chase, the house of Lord Carterville. Lord Canterville said them that there was a ghost and that the house was haunted. The family Otis bought the Chase of Canterville. When they arrived, an old woman dressed in black with a white apron was waiting for them in the stairs of the house. She was Mrs Umney, the housekeeper. They followed to her through the dark wooden hall into the library. Washington, the older of his brothers, saw a bloodstain in the ground and he rubbed this. Mrs Umney said that it was the bloodstain of Lady Eleanore de Canterville. Her husband, Sir Simon de Canterville, mudered her. Sir Simon disappeared and nobody has ever found his body. But his guilty spirit still haunts Canterville Chase. All the days the ghost put again the bloodstain. One night the ghost appeared, but he was very dissapointed because Mr Otis wasn’t afraid of him. On Sunday night, the ghost appeared again. He had tried to get into the suit of armour to frighten the family but it was too heavy for him. The excited twins immediately shot at the ghost with their peasshoorte, while Mr Otis pointed a gun at the ghost. Again he didn’t afraid to the family. He was very upset. For some days, he was very ill. He didn’t leave his room except to put back the bloodstain that Washington kept removing. But when he felt stronger, he decided to haunt the Otis family for a third time. This time the twins and Washington frightened to the ghost and him returned to his secret room. The Otis family began to live a normal life: Mr Otis wrote a history of the American Democratic Party; Mrs Otis gave a big party in the gardens of the Canterville Chase, there was American food and American games; Virginia rode her pony in the country. Cecil, the young Duke of Cheshire, came to stay at Canterville Chase. He was in love with Virginia. Mr Otis wrote a letter to Lord Canterville saying that the ghost has gone away. The ghost got ready to haunt the house again. But then, he at the last moment he remenbered the terrible twins. So he decided to stay in his room forever. Virginia found the secret room of the ghost and she was talking with him about the past and his family. The ghost wanted to death because he can’t fright to the Otis family. He said to Virginia that she was the only one person that could help him. She hepls him and she was dessappeared for one day and all of his family was very worried and called to the police. When Virginia returned to the house, she was very upset bacause the ghost was death. His father was a little angry. She took to all the family about the day that she was dissappeared and take the little box that the ghost gave her. One of the twins saw the tree black that was converting in an flowering tree. The family made a funeral for Sir Simon. Some time later Virginia married with Cecil, the young Duke of Cheshire. After the honeymoon, Virginia and Cecil went to the Sir Simon’s grave and put some roses there. PERSONAL OPINION: I like the book because the ghost can’t frightened to the Otis family. I like the twins because they can frightened to the ghost. I like too the love story betwen the Duke of Cheshire and Virginia. 3
