The Canterville Ghost and Other stories Author: Oscar Wilde Plubishing house: Richmond About characters: · Mr. Hiram B. Otis: a rich American interested only to money. In a horse race met her future husband, Duke of Chesire. · ‘Stars and Stripes’ : twins of family, they were called because they were often beaten for their bad behaviour. · Mrs. Umney: housekeeper of Canterville Chase for many years who knew the house. She was an old woman. She was wearing a black dress with a white cap on her head. · Mr. Simon Canterville: main character embodied by a ghost with long, dirty grey hair fell down his back. His clothes were very old and full of holes. He
scared everyone who passed by her house, but the end rested in peace.
Summary: This book is about an American family, the Otis family to be moved to England in a house called The Canterville Chase. For years no one lived in that house because it was said to be haunted but the Otis family didn’t mind it. At home there was only the housekeeper, Mrs. Umney, who told them that lasted no more than one night there. She taught them a bloodstain that had been years in the library floor and cleaned but the stain reappeared. The Otis family still hadn’t fear. The Canterville Ghost decided to scare them better at night making noises but they still didn’t panic. The ghost began to despair because he couldn’t frighten and they mocked him, except Virginia, so the ghost asked for help so she could rest in peace as it was said of him that he had murdered his wife and didn’t. At the end, Virginia prayed for him and buried the skeleton of Simon Canterville, the ghost. Virginia kept the treasure that gave Simon and married her fiance.
My personal opinion: I think it is a mystery book that if you start reading you like so you have to stop to not stay with the doubt. In spite of this, I haven’t been afraid reading and has taught me that appearances are deceiving. In conclusion, I love this book.
