CATHOLIC COLLECTIVE BARGAINING Improving Conditions Collectively
CHAPTER BRIEFING NO. 10 Time Grab Anger Hands Off Our Time Day – Wednesday, 30 May Dear Colleagues At the last Single Bargaining Unit employers’ representatives finally tabled their claims. Both Diocesan and Religious Institute employers failed to address the identified real need for greater quanta of preparation and correction time for both primary and secondary schools and the need to ensure preparation and correction time is able to be effectively used for its intended purpose. Rather than responding positively to this identified real need, employers are seeking to exacerbate the problem with a time grab of an extra 18 hours per year of professional development. As well, employers are seeking to significantly change the current Experienced Teacher 6 (ET6) provision as well add extra work demands above and beyond what ET6 teachers already do in the classroom without any time recompense – another time grab. Members Display Outrage On Wednesday, 30 May, members across the State will wear badges carrying the logo “Hands Off Our Time”. The “angry clock” depicted on these badges reflects the anger felt by members for the employers’ lack of positive response to requests for more preparation and correction time and their blatant disregard of this real need by seeking even more of their employees limited available time. We have written to every Principal in Catholic schools outlining our concerns and need for this response from employees. We acknowledge the responses from a number of Principals who agree that this employer position is unnecessary, ill-considered and counter-productive to good educational praxis. Briefing Badges and Flyers Last week badges, a school report, Chapter Briefing (CB9) and staffroom flyers were posted to every Catholic school in Queensland for use on Wednesday, 30 May. (If these haven’t been received yet, you should immediately contact your Organiser.)
Badge Day Wednesday On this Wednesday, members are requested to wear their badges and hold a Chapter Meeting to consider the motions forwarded previously with Chapter Briefing/s 8 and 9. If your Chapter has already endorsed and returned these motions, you should consider endorsing a motion of support for your colleagues across Queensland who are joining you in badge wearing. Members should not engage with students in regard to the badge wearing but, if questioned, respond succinctly that it is a sign of employee solidarity during collective negotiations. We would also encourage you to take photos of the Chapter and members wearing badges so that these may be used to demonstrate the outrage of employees in response to this time grab. Photos should be emailed to ecuthbertson@qieu.asn.au Considered motions should be forwarded to IEUA-QNT by close of business Thursday 31 May. Fax 38397021. Email catholiccolb7@qieu.asn.au This is a time to demonstrate solidarity in regard to this unnecessary and unwarranted time grab. Time Grab Affects All The blatant time grab will directly affect all educators in schools. It is important that non-union members be approached and invited to join our union so that they can add their voice to our collective response to these unnecessary counterproductive employer claims. Together we can improve conditions collectively. Kind regards
TERRY BURKE SECRETARY
