Teachers at some of the ELICOS and Business Colleges throughout Queensland are missing out on the enhanced wages and conditions that many colleges are now experiencing because of the collective bargaining process. What is a Collective Agreement? A collective agreement is a legal document, negotiated through the collective bargaining process between the staff of a College and their employer, which set out pay and conditions for employees. As collective agreements only cover one employer, the document can be tailored to the specific needs of a college.

What has been achieved through the bargaining process? Collective Agreements can cover a variety of aspects of employment at a College. Some of the conditions that have been achieved across our sector are: • • • • • • • •

Wages commencing at $42,584 and progress to a salary of $56,230 Allowances of up to $8,400 for additional duties Paid marketing and preparation time of up to 3 additional hours for ever 4 hours work Long Service Leave accruals of up to 1.3 weeks per year of service Personal leave accruals of up to 12 days per annum Paid maternity leave entitlements of up to 8 weeks Paid parental leave of up to 2 weeks separate from sick leave entitlements Reduced hours of duty to 35 hours per week

How can we achieve these conditions? For your college to commence the negotiation process for your own collective agreement it is important to have three things in place: • • •

A majority of union members, so that every staff member is represented and supported An educated staff who are aware of the issues faced and potential solutions A staff who are willing to act collectively to support the process of Collective Bargaining.

To improve your wages and conditions please call your union on (07) 3839 7020 or email elicos@qieu.asn.au.
