Professional Rates of Pay Campaign
CHAPTER BRIEFING No. 12 Campaign for Professional Wages - Teachers’ Rally Dear Colleagues QIEU members can show their solidarity with state sector colleagues in support of professional rates of pay with their attendance at the rally outside Parliament House in Brisbane tomorrow at 4:00pm. Achieving professional rates of pay is an issue for all Queensland teachers. Teachers in both non-government and state schools share a common goal of making sure the future provision of high quality education is preserved for all Queensland students, while ensuring the attraction and retention of high quality teachers in our schools. A determined collective voice at the rally is needed. Professional rates of pay need to be achieved In our current collective bargaining negotiations, non-government employees have consistently endorsed a claim for professional rates of pay that meet interstate benchmarks. However, non-government employers have not only failed to do the right thing by their teachers by meeting national benchmarks, they have also failed to take the lead around the issue of wages. With non-government employers and the state government at this stage refusing to meet professional rates of pay, Queensland could see its teacher wages institutionalised for the next decade. This will not only affect the teaching professional as a whole but puts quality education in this state under threat. A collective voice needed Members are asked to show their support in the campaign for professional wages by attending the rally outside Parliament House in Brisbane tomorrow, at 4:00pm for a 4:30pm start. For non-metropolitan members please show your support by sending the faxback to the Premier of Queensland, that was provided in the last Chapter Briefing. Metropolitan members can forward this faxback to the Premier also. Thank you in advance for your efforts to ensure that the dedicated work of Queensland teachers are properly recognised and valued. Kind regards
TERRY BURKE GENERAL SECRETARY
