School Officers Why it’s a smart move to join our union What’s in it for School Officers? Background Information IEUA-QNT is the industry union in the non-government education sector. School officer and services staff are an important part of our union, working together with their teacher colleagues to improve wages and conditions in our schools. School officers and services staff have issues and concerns particular to their employment, including issues of classification, and the constantly developing nature of school officer roles. IEUA-QNT members have a proud record of improving working conditions for school officers and services staff including better classification structures, improvements in long service leave, sick leave and family leave provisions. Issue 1:

Working Rights and Conditions

Our union takes an active role in the negotiation of collective agreements in workplaces throughout the sector, in conjunction with employee representatives. Union collective agreements provide the fundamental protections of working rights and conditions. Information on your current wages and conditions can be found on our website (www.qieu.asn.au). You can also contact one of our Member Services Officers or an Industrial Services Officer on Freecall 1800 177 937 (QLD residents) or 1800 351 996 (NT residents). Issue 2:

Legal Protection

One of the important aspects of working in schools is making certain that you have adequate legal protection. Increasingly, law courts are expecting higher level standards of care by school staff. Relying on your school for legal protection is not enough. As a IEUA-QNT member you are entitled to expert legal advice from IEUA-QNT lawyers. In addition to legal matters arising from your employment, IEUA-QNT membership also provides for discounted legal fees on private matters. Some of the legal issues frequently raised include:  Liability for students injured whilst under playground supervision;  Legal requirements relating to reporting of suspected child abuse; and  Legal implications of administrating medication. IEUA-QNT members are also automatically covered by IEUA-QNT's Public Liability and Professional Indemnity Insurance Cover. This provides legal protection for you against a claim for negligence as well as cover for associated legal expenses. Our policy provides cover for up to $10 million Public Liability (property damage and personal injury), $90 million Umbrella Liability (extension of Public Liability) and $10 million Professional Indemnity Liability. Legal costs incurred in defending or settling any claim are also covered. Issue 3: Industrial advice over the telephone when you need it For information on workplace issues please contact a Member Services Officer on Freecall 1800 177 937 (QLD residents), 1800 351 996 (NT residents) or email enquires@qieu.asn.au
