In general a new graduate teacher will commence on Band 2 Step1 of the teaching scale under the appropriate Award or Certified Agreement, however there are exceptions to this general provision. The Teachers Award for Non-Governmental Schools (TANGS) provides that where a graduate teacher has a Bachelor degree with first or second class honours and, in addition at least one year of teacher education, that graduate teacher will commence on Band 2 Step 2 of the scale. Further, if a graduate teacher has two degrees plus at least one year of teacher education such a person will also commence on Band 2 Step 2. It should also be noted that graduate teachers commencing employment in either an Anglican or Lutheran school will be subject to different provisions. In Lutheran schools a graduate teacher who possess’ a Bachelor degree and an approved post graduate teacher education qualification, which together total at least five years of study, shall commence on Band 2 Step 2 of the salary scale. Further, a graduate teacher commencing in a Lutheran school who has a Bachelor degree with either first or second class honours and which contains the equivalent of at least two years of professional studies in education shall also be appointed at Band 2 Step 2 of the salary scale. A graduate teacher commencing in an Anglican school who has a Bachelor degree with either first or second class honours and which contains the equivalent of at least two years of professional studies in education shall be appointed at the classification level of Band 2 Step 2. Further, in an Anglican school a graduate teacher who has a Bachelor degree plus a post graduate teacher education degree (which is the equivalent of at least two years of professional studies in education) will be appointed to Band 2 Step 2 on the classification scale.
