A petrol station and a dealership are not ever compatible. Unlike the former, the latter is always bonded to the cities. Consequently, planning a prototype that combines both buildings and does not meet with failure seems a tough challenge. That is why it was thought to arrange two separate modules which yet can coexist together. In short, the aim was that either isolated or combined the project might adapt itself to the different contexts. Three architectural elements and one purpose set the structure and qualify the space: a roof with the minimum thickness and as lightest as possible; a few slender steel columns and a couple of walls made of reinforced concrete whose target is to stiffen the structure in the horizontal plane.

The challenge was how to maintain the balance between the old urban tissue and the modern planning of the other side of the canal - a solution that merged both the urban and architectural requirements. It was sought to open the block towards the canal, creating an urban front all along the bank and providing the set of buildings with a wide range of inner space. As to its construction, the buildings were solved by L shape. Each of them had to contain different types of housing: studios and flats with two, three and four rooms. Similarly, the staircase and lift had to serve three flats per level and as a whole it was mandatory to follow the current French housing regulations. The projected solution consisted in joining all the fixed elements in the centre, such as the bathrooms, toilets, lifts, staircase and all installations, so that the surrounding space can be open and flexible. Structurally this is solved by placing two parallel, reinforced concrete walls in the centre and a line of columns at each edge of the slabs.

The intention was to preserve the current construction as long as possible and to add an adjacent wing in order to enclose the backyard and house the new rooms required. On the ground floor it was arranged the master room along with the living-room and kitchen whereas on the first floor it was placed the rooms for the children and a play inner area beside a large balcony. Concerning its construction, it was intended to differentiate between the former building and the new intervention, thereby the cladding of the extension made of wood in contrast to the massive and rocky appearance of the former farm.

Architecture committed to the order and geometry present in the monastery of San Juan: a building where the structure has therefore the commitment to extending the delicate rhythm of the historical monument towards the new intervention. Opposite to attitudes that aim to define/set up everything, there is another approach that works on the unfinished project -a plan in which there is still space for the imagination and future sensitive reflection upon the received inheritance. Fine architecture is and has always been sustainable and such goal proves indeed redundant. The objective is eventually a project that could vindicate itself and where there would not be necessary the use of words: a quiet architecture.

A square opposite the building is set back from the alignment of the roads while the building itself was slightly tilted in order to lead the sight from the inside towards the most attractive views of the city, such as the wall and the cathedral. On the other hand, the solid penetrated gently into the hill, questing for the idea of an architecture merged with the landscape and keeping the continuity to the scenery. The project displays a set of courtyards perpendicularly ordered on the horizontal plane that were subject to a strict structural mesh with the aim of providing a flexible and open plan. The programme was likewise vertically arranged: on the ground floor there were the communal rooms whilst the first floor was thought as a grand container that houses all the educational areas – an open plan where to carry out an active teaching. The workshops were separated from the theoretical classes. The former was thought as a manual labour space whilst the latter as a place where to study and therefore to be isolated. Lastly, some technical blocks that house the installation were placed on the edge of the workshops, taking part in the spatial definition of these classrooms.
