PRESS RELEASE USAID PROVIDES URGENT AGRICULTURAL ASSISTANCE TO THE KYRGYZ REPUBLIC

The events of April 7 in Kyrgyzstan created potential for problems with agricultural productivity for the upcoming harvest season. Many farmers lack access to basic needs such as seeds and fertilizers. To address the urgent needs of Kyrgyz farmers, the U.S. Government, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) allocated $150,000 worth of funds to purchase 100 mt of spring wheat elite seed, 100 mt of spring barley elite seed, 40 mt of corn seed, and 100 mt of compound fertilizers. These commodities will be distributed free of charge through established market outlets in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture and the Local Governments of Issyk-Kul, Naryn, and Talas Oblasts. Approximately 10,000 farmers will benefit directly from this assistance, which will be implemented by the Kyrgyz Agro-Input Enterprise Development Project (KAED II). The assistance will address the immediate needs of farmers and will help them with the growing season in order to generate better incomes for their families. This assistance is part of our strong and vital partnership with Kyrgyzstan which includes U.S. assistance aimed at supporting a stable, democratic, and economically vital Kyrgyzstan.
