Antigua, in neighboring Alotenango. It enjoys a spectacular location, nestled amid the coffee trees, flowers and hills of a former plantation on gently rolling volcanic slopes descending to Guatemala’s Pacific coast. On a clear day, you can see the nearby coastal town of Escuintla and the Pacific Ocean. But on any given day, it’s hard to ignore the four sentinel volcanoes that give this property some of the most amazing views anywhere. Fuego Maya (Mayan Fire) at La Reunion is an 18-hole golf course designed by the legendary golf architect Pete Dye, with his son Perry Dye as co designer. Both Dyes stated that the Antigua area is one of the most fascinating places at which they’ve worked. Fuego Maya (72-par, 7,560-yard course) is one of the country’s most challenging golf courses and is the only golf course in the
world with a view of four volcanoes. Pete and Perry Dye gleaned inspiration from the Mayan Solar Calendar, which consists of 18 twenty-day months. Each of the course’s 18 holes is named after its corresponding month on the Mayan calendar. The 19th month, Wayeb, is a five-day month dedicated to rest and contemplation and so makes a fitting name for the bar and restaurant. Facilities include a driving range, putting green, chipping green, practice bunker, and pro shop. Incidentally, Perry Dye spent the last days of 2009 on vacation at the resort with his family and nailed a 178-yard hole-in-one on the course’s 12th hole. Fuego Maya Golf Course is all you can handle. Fortunately, there are four sets of tees, as short as 5,578 yards, so if you’re not a near scratch player, stay away from the tips if you want to shoot

areas were built to direct runoff away from the lakes and keep nutrients used on the golf course from directly entering the ground water aquifer. The water for irrigation drawn from the aquifer was kept to a minimum as result of having only seventy acres of turf irrigated and the remaining “play” areas planted with drought tolerant native grasses that also help to define and frame each hole. Native coquina (shell rock) was used in the “waste areas” to define the strategy of the holes and further reduce the irrigated turf area. The landscape palette is 100% native to this region and requires no irrigation once established. The owners of Juliette Falls are avid golfers and therefore had clear goals and objectives for the course. They wanted a golf course that would challenge the best PGA Tour players from the back tees but also a course that all golfers can enjoy from their respective tee positions. The course is designed with wide fairway landing areas that are broken up with strategically placed bunkers. This gives the golfer a sense of openness but at the same time a “preferred” position in the fairway to approach the green. The result of the design and construction teams’ effort is a strategically designed golf course that utilizes minimal ground water, tests the top players on the PGA Tour and is enjoyable for all skill levels.
