HOW TO BUY A TICKET IN SPAIN AND NOT DIE IN THE ATTEMPT THE IFMSA-SPAIN TUTORIAL
DISCOVER SPAIN TRAVELLING BY TRAIN First of all, you need to get into the Spanish National Railway webpage: www.renfe.com
This is the first page you will see where you can choose the language. In the left part of the page you can find the purchasing interface. Just below, there is information about short-distance trains (commuter trains and Feve trains).
There is also additional information about discounts, international trips and a virtual assistant (called Irene) for frequent answered questions (FAQs), with whom you can speak in English.
So, if you want to buy a ticket go to the purchasing interface. On “Departure” and “Destination”, select the city with the asterisk (*) ALWAYS; it means “all the stations of the city”, so you’ll be able to get on/off at any station. Click on the option “Outward” if you want to buy a single ticket to travel to a
certain place. If you want to buy a return ticket too, click on the option “Return”. Then search the trains and the dates you want. You will see a page like this (it will also include, between the payment and the ticket, the “Choosing your seat” option).
NOTES: -No change is allowed for tickets paid in cash. -If train arrives delayed (more than 30 min), go to Customer care office (“Atención al cliente”) and request the repayment of your ticket. The repayment depends on the delay (30 min, 50% of cost). -You cannot add more than one discount.
WAIT A SECOND... DID I JUST HEAR DISCOUNTS? Go and return!
If you buy a return ticket, you may see a purple icon with two arrows in the opposite direction next to some prices. It means that is the price for the return tickets. The changes in this ticket don’t suppose any extra charge. If you cancel this ticket, you get back the 40% of the price you paid.

At the bottom, click on “Continue”. Complete all the fields and “Continue”. After that, choose the seat if your fare allows it, and IT’S DONE. DON’T FORGET TO SAVE THE TICKET ON PDF AND PRINT IT. Keep a copy of the locator number (“Localizador”) of your ticket. With this number you can print the ticket in the different stations. If you lost or forgot your ticket, print it in the station. Go to “Ticket sales” or to one ticket-sale machine and print it using locator number (“Localizador”).
*Combinado Cercanías: with the purchase of any kind of Long-distance ticket you get for free in both, origin and destination, a Cercanías ticket and/or Feve commuter ticket associated with the initial ticket. The ticket can be obtained and used within 3 hours prior to departure time in origin and during the three hours following the time of arrival of the AVE or Long-distance train, provided that the opening and closing times of service in each city permit it. The mere possession of the password on the ticket does not allow to enter the Cercanías rail network. You need to get two tickets at authorized points (ticket-sale machines or other ticket offices).
