Welcome Message

Dear Americas Region,

It is my pleasure to welcome you to Peru and invite you to participate in the Americas Regional Meeting 2023, an opportunity that will finally allow us to meet again in person after several years of pandemic and a virtual setting.

During this event, you will be able to share with members of NMOs from our region and develop new bonds; know a little more of our diverse culture, wonderful gastronomy and beloved country, and live together an everlasting experience We have prepared for you different spaces of knowledge together with fun social programs, a perfect balance between working and having fun.

In addition, I would like to introduce you to the Organizing Committee of this Americas Regional Meeting, a group of 19 committed and motivated members Together, we have been working very hard to organize this experience in an ideal way; we are sure it will be an unforgettable adventure!

IFMSA PERU is very excited to receive you since it has been a longing to host this great event We await you with open arms, so that, together, we can keep on contributing to the development of our region and the Federation.

Beloved Americas Region,

It is with great pleasure sharing with you these words, introducing you to the most important event of the year in our continent: the Americas Regional Meeting 2023. After a couple of years we are meeting in person once again! Even though the COVID 19 pandemic struck our region, we remain strong and united!

During this great event you will have the unique opportunity to engage with medical students from all over our continent, and to enhance knowledge in regards to public health, medical education, human rights, sexual and reproductive health, global health & exchanges, and way more! We hope this Regional Meeting exceeds your expectations, and helps the region to unite forces and work together in order to strengthen our community based activities, and advocate for a better health future in the Americas.

From the Arctic to the North pole, from the Pacific to the Atlantic Ocean, from North, Central, South America and the Caribbean, we are a wide, diverse and unique region, we share conflicts and victories, we share languages and history, we are together, and we are one, a big Americas family all together to decide for the future of our Region. Let’s forget about our differences and focus on what makes us one: we are family, we are strong, we are culture and diversity, we are the Americas

About Peru

Known as the land of all types of blood, extraordinary Peru offers a unique experience for its diversity of landscapes, climates and languages. Being the third largest country in South America, Peru has a wide variety of cultures and biodiversity Travellers come from all over the world to discover the wonders that our country offers

General overview

Peru is one of the most varied countries in the world.

A multicultural country, full of traditions, award winning gastronomy and vast nature reserves. It has 12 world heritage sites recognized by UNESCO and owns 84 of the 117 life zones that exist in the world Peru is located in the western part of South America and its vast territory, of over 1.2 million km², covers three regions: Coast (Costa), Highlands (Sierra) and Jungle (Selva) Its current population is over 31.5 million.

Although Spanish is the official language of Peru, 47 native languages, including Quechua and Aymara, are spoken in the country

Tourism opportunities

Thanks to the legacy of powerful ancient civilizations, Peru is home of more than 5,000 archaeological sites. Many of them are still surrounded by mystery, but they can still transport the visitor back in time to when these cultures flourished. For example, a visit to Machu Picchu allows you to discover the perfection of the Inca Empire!

Gastronomy

Peruvian gastronomy is a celebration of Peru. A country with an ancient tradition and a promising future that does not lose sight of its roots and where the art of good eating stands out among its inhabitants as one of the most distinctive signs of its identity.

Peruvian gastronomy has traditional dishes such as ceviche, lomo saltado, papa a la huancaína, pollo a la brasa, among others. The typical dishes of Peru are the result of miscegenation and the influence of Africa, Spain, Italy, China and Japan.

In addition, part of the importance of Peruvian gastronomy is due to the Peruvian flagship drink, pisco.

Last, IFMSA PERU invites you to come to Peru, discover our lands and let us show you a little piece of our country and our culture. Our NMO has prepared amazing surprises for all of you It will be a unique and unforgettable experience.

About Lima

Lima, where tradition is today’s trend.

Lima, city of kings, our lovely capital of State, is considered the commercial, financial, cultural and political center of Peru It is located on the central coast of the country, on the shores of the Pacific Ocean, flanked by the coastal desert and extending over the valleys of the Chillon, Rimac and Lurin rivers.

Our capital has a population of more than 9 million 320 thousand inhabitants, representing 30% of the Peruvian population. This figure has made it the most populated city in the country, the fifth in Latin America and the Caribbean, and one of the thirty most populated urban agglomerations in the world

Travel Information

To get to Peru, the best option is by air. We have the Jorge Chavez International Airport in Lima, which is the main international route and flies to many destinations. It is located in the province of Callao about 16 km from Miraflores, the tourist district of the city.

Requirements you must take into account to travel to Peru:

Travellers 18 years of age and older must show proof of having applied the three (3) doses of vaccination against COVID 19, in Peru or abroad. Otherwise, they may present a negative result of a PCR molecular test for COVID 19, issued within 48 hours before their trip. The passport must be valid for at least 6 months We recommend that you have a valid passport.

When you arrive in Peru, you can find cab ranks at the entrance of the airport; likewise, we have several applications such as Uber and inDriver where you can access a cab just by clicking, it is a very effective option for you to have a safe trip and is available 24 hours a day.

Please note that the information presented below is general and in no way replaces the information available on the Peruvian State's website. While the OC will do its best to provide timely information and facilitate the processes for international delegates, it is important to understand that the due process of visa applications must be respected Do not forget to apply for your visa in advance so that you can avoid setbacks.

Countries that require a visa to enter Peru: Venezuela(*), Cuba, El Salvador, Haití and Nicaragua.

Countries that do not require a visa to enter Peru: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Suriname, Uruguay, Canada, United States, Antigua Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Costa Rica, Dominica, Grenada, Guatemala, Honduras, Jamaica, Panama, Dominican Republic, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, and Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.

For countries that are not on the list, you should contact the Peruvian Embassy or Consulate for prior authorization before travelling to Peru

Event Information

What is the PreRM?

The Pre Regional Meeting (PreRM) happens right before the Regional Meeting and it's an official IFMSA event dedicated exclusively to Capacity Building. During 3 days, participants will get the chance to learn different global health topics and enhance their soft skills such as presentation skills, public speaking, leadership and more After the accomplishments of their training, the participants have the unique opportunity to become certificated facilitators and trainers of the IFMSA

What is the AmRM?

The Americas Regional Meeting (AmRM) is the official event that brings together all the National Member Organizations (NMOs) of the Americas that are part of the IFMSA, to make decisions that pertain to the development and strengthening of the region

The main objectives of this event are: strengthen the region by allowing NMOs and individual members to share their resources, successes and health issues. To encourage the exchange of knowledge among delegates and foster cooperation among NMOs for the ultimate benefit of society; discuss and propose solutions to common problems faced by NMOs at the national and local levels; and provide a forum for medical students from the Americas to discuss issues related to education, science and health, such as human rights, reproductive health, public health and global health

January 3rd: Bar

On our first night, we will visit Barranco which is considered one of the most eclectic, colourful and vibrant locations in Lima. Therefore, it will be easy to spot a bar to have drinks and some snacks.

January 4th: Coachella Night

Turn on your festival mood! This party will bring out your artsy, bohemian and rock star style at the same time, so be ready with an original outfit that reflects your creativity. Be prepared for a night full of your favourite songs to dance, karaoke and lots of group games to have fun until the sun comes up!

January 5th: Dinner

On our last night we will share a big dinner with the best dishes our country has to offer, while you get to share all of those unforgettable experiences you had during the preRM. Do not miss the opportunity to taste the best of our culinary options!

Get ready and let us introduce you to one of the best cultural experiences ever We will have a night full of music and traditional dances so you can see a piece of our country’s diversity, even better if you dare to show us some moves and dance to the rhythm of our famous dances such as “festejo”.

January 8th: Neon Party

The darker it is, the better! Be ready to have an amazing time in this colourful party where your creativity will be your best weapon Do not forget to bring your most dazzling outfit and the best ideas to have fun with body paint!

January 9th: NFDP

On our second night you will have the opportunity to taste some of our most delicious dishes and drinks , like “causa rellena” or “papa a la huancaina”, so be sure to come on an empty stomach! We encourage you to bring a little piece of your homeland to share with everyone and to practice some dance moves as we will have a dance competition between delegations

January 10th: Nightclub

When we walk through the streets of Miraflores, the most touristic district, where the music bursts from the clubs and the energy is felt a mile away , you will not want to leave! You cannot miss the opportunity to enjoy the best of Peru’s nightlife, it will be unforgettable!

January 11th: Closing Ceremony , black and white gala

Biosecurity & COVID-19

SITUATION

The COVID 19 pandemic has been considered a public health emergency generating international concern, which is why the main focus of the Peruvian territory has been to manage the prevention, promotion, detection, and response to infections.

With vaccination of COVID 19, it is being achieved to reduce the impact of deaths and hospitalizations, which is why more than 80% of the Peruvian population is fully vaccinated and it is expected that this pandemic will soon remain in history and memories

MEASURES

Establishing promotion, prevention and protection measures against COVID 19 is a fundamental basis for reducing the risk of contagion, which is why a series of strategies have been established in Peru to control it.

Among the stipulated guidelines is the frequent disinfection of the facilities and the correct washing of hands with soap and water; if none exists, a 70% alcohol based hand sanitizer should be used.

In the AmRM Peru 2023, the guidelines imposed by the Peruvian Ministry of Health (MINSA) will be complied with

REQUIREMENTS FOR TRAVELLERS

Foreigners not residing in Peru, whose final destination is the national territory as passengers and regardless of their country of origin, must be vaccinated according to the vaccination schedule of their country of origin. As an alternative to the accreditation of their vaccination, any person may present a negative molecular test with a result date no more than 48 hours before boarding at their point of origin.

RESTRICTIONS BY THE HOTEL

Disinfect guest luggage with 70° alcohol. When sneezing and coughing, cover yourself with your forearm or with a piece of paper that will be discarded immediately in the specific bins for polluting products, duly identified with a red bag. Mandatory use of a surgical mask at all times in the Hotel facilities In addition, you must respect the maximum capacity allowed for each elevator.

RESTRICTIONS IN THE REST OF THE EVENT

Frequently disinfect hands with 70° alcohol. The use of NK95 or surgical masks is not mandatory in spaces outside the hotel

Machu Picchu, Cusco

The Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu is the most visited tourist destination in Peru and America. Laguna Huacachina, Ica

The Huacachina Lagoon is an oasis in the middle of the Ica desert that is surrounded by dunes, eucalyptus trees, palm trees and huarango trees. It is also known as the Oasis of America Here you can enjoy the radiant sun, ride a buggy, practice sandboarding and ride a pedal boat. Valle del Colca, Arequipa

The Colca Valley is an extensive valley of fertile land that borders the Colca River. It is also known as the Valley of Fire. The archaeological site of Caral is considered the oldest city in Peru. It is a complex of buildings that belongs to the Caral civilization, one of the oldest civilizations in the world Caral was built out of stone, mud and wood, and it is organized in amphitheatres, six pyramids, temples and numerous buildings for housing purposes Here, many of the techniques and technologies that were perfected by the pre Inca and Inca cultures were forged. As an example, the oldest quipu was found here, as well as many fishing and agricultural instruments and 32 flutes made with condor and pelican bones.

Puente de los Suspiros

In the heart of Barranco is the Puente de los Suspiros, a traditional wooden bridge wrapped in an air of romanticism, for having been the site that began countless love relationships in Lima.
