Performance Diary The dreamlike atmosphere and overwhelming charm of the Peto Garden at Iford is reason enough for a visit. And people do visit – from all over the world. Add to that exquisite classical opera and concerts, as well as stunning jazz events, enjoyed with a picnic and a party of friends perhaps. It all adds up to an unforgettable evening out. And with opera arias and chamber music concert prices starting at £20 it is a beautiful and affordable and festive experience. Artistic excellence is a core value at Iford Arts: our aim is to match the perfection of the surroundings with jewel-like performances. The tiny cloister at Iford makes a unique setting in the round for many of those operas which focus intimately on affairs of the heart, or the family, or the inner workings of an individual soul. Truly communicative and nuanced performances as achieved at Iford can be revelatory and certainly seem to be addictive. We are fortunate to enjoy long-standing artistic partnerships, for example with the virtuosic chamber ensemble CHROMA, who, conducted by Oliver Gooch, will play for our new production of La bohème in 2017 and will also deliver their own delectable chamber concert of words and music on 8 June. Iford Arts is particularly acclaimed for its productions of baroque opera, and this year’s dramatised Jephtha, Handel’s sensational family story based on the Old Testament, offers a rare chance to witness this wonderful work. As one of our returning audience remarked (he comes from Amsterdam), ‘Where else in the world can I see something like this?’ With Christopher Turner, tenor, in the title role; Christopher Bucknall, conducting from the harpsichord; and players led by Boyan Ciccic, this really should not be missed. Whether it’s a jazz promenade, an opera or an intimate cloister concert, when you come you will find our friendly team of volunteer stewards informal and welcoming and above all keen to ensure you really enjoy your evening. We all look forward to having you with us.

A NEW IFORD ARTS PRODUCTION

May 27 | 30 | June 2 | 3 | 6 | 9 | 10 | 13 From the first delicate moments of her shy entry Mimi’s music and her story wring your heartstrings. Against the background of chaotic ‘student’ life in early 20th-century Paris, where a quartet of arty young men sow their wild oats, and the vampish Musetta reigns supreme, Puccini’s ever-youthful characters await the onset of responsibility. It is impossible to remain untouched by the surging moments of rich and dreamy music and the very human love stories of this, his all-time favourite and best-loved work. Witnessed close up at Iford it becomes more affecting than ever… Bring a hanky. Conducted by Oliver Gooch with rising young tenor Anthony Flaum as Rudolfo, and Irish soprano Màire Flavin as Mimi; together with Alison Langer as fire-spitting Musetta and Nicholas Lester as her long-suffering lover Marcello. This new production is translated and directed by Christopher Cowell. TICKETS

A resourceful young girl is imprisoned by her lecherous older guardian. Outside the window her noble suitor (incognito, of course) woos her in song. Enter Figaro, the inventive barber, who tirelessly manipulates his betters from the moment of his impressive entrance aria – which everyone knows. It’s a classic Italian commedia del arte and, many would say, never bettered. Here, it is given a wickedly inventive Charles Court Opera twist, sung in English, in a new sparkling translation. Rossini’s incomparable score and witty musical illustration of every character and turn of the story cannot fail to exhilarate. Whether furtive or frenzied, restrained or reckless The Barber of Seville truly is comedy in music with every nuance exploited. It is created for Iford Arts by Charles Court Opera, who brought us their spellbinding production of The Magic Flute in 2016. Youthful energy never flags in this new bright and breezy production from the company’s Artistic Director, John Savournin, conducted by David Eaton. TICKETS

Designer: Rachel Szmukler Jephtha Christopher Turner Iphis Lucy Page Storge Marianne Vidal Hamor Benjamin Williamson

AN IFORD ARTS PRODUCTION

July 22 | 25 | 28 | 29 | Aug 1 | 2 Jephtha’s bold deal with God leads to unimaginable consequences for his innocent daughter Iphis and his outraged wife, Storge. As Jephtha’s faith is challenged and his doubts grow Handel lays bare this extraordinary family drama with stunning arias which reveal him still at the very height of his powers. From Jephtha’s ‘How dark O Lord are thy decrees’ to his achingly beautiful ‘Waft her, Angels, through the skies’; from Storge’s nightmarish ‘Scenes of Horror’ to the great quartet ‘O spare your daughter’ the old testament story surges forward framed with dramatic choruses from an ensemble of young Handelians. Conducted by Christopher Bucknall (Agrippina in 2015) and directed by Tim Nelson, this great work, with its surprising conclusion, still raises questions for today.

J S Bach Goldberg Variations Daniel Pioro Violin Liam Byrne Viola da Gamba Clare O’Connell Cello Trevor Allan Davies Narrator / Actor

This is my dream, It is my own dream, I dreamt it. I dreamt that my hair was kempt. Then I dreamt that my true love unkempt it. Ogden Nash Music has the power to lift our spirits and this particular music appeals to everyone from musicologists to babies. This unique intimate cloister performance of JS Bach’s Goldberg Variations arranged for the sublime combination of violin, viola da gamba and cello promises a life-changing perception-altering experience. Bach’s ‘music for the soul’s delight’ is a breathtaking and virtuoso array of diverse movements from the humorous to the heavenly, in which a single theme is taken on a dancing musical journey. As with other great works it has become encrusted with myth and legend. Whether or not the Variations were really written to soothe an insomniac Russian with music of ‘a smooth and somewhat lively character that he might be a little cheered up by them in his sleepless nights’ (as Bach’s first biographer claims), CHROMA musicians Daniel Pioro and Clare O’Connell, joined by Liam Byrne and Trevor Allan Davies, will explore the theme of sleep, and, possibly, sleeplessness, in a deeply meditative dream sequence interspersed with a selection of readings on the nature of sleep.

The rich, jazz-infused repertoire explores timeless classics penned by the legendary musical storytellers of the last 100 years, and celebrates giants of the Great American and British Songbooks through to the work of more contemporary writers crafting the standards of today, plus Clare’s own original compositions. The eclectic song list, with music from Cole Porter, Billy Strayhorn, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Tim Rice to Sting, and honouring the likes of Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Nancy Wilson and Peggy Lee, will include a selection of material from her latest album, Twelve O’Clock Tales. Casita TIPITINA Tipitina deliver their own unique take on the blues, barrelhouse, boogie and gospel of New Orleans, in the footsteps of Professor Longhair, Dr John, James Booker, Fats Domino and Allen Toussaint. Following on from their acclaimed debut album ‘I Wish I Was In New Orleans’, Tipitina are now on a roll with ‘Taking Care of Business’, recorded at 2011’s Birmingham International Jazz & Blues Festival supported by Colmore BID. Already the House Full signs are going up at Ronnie Scotts and elsewhere, encouraged by uniformly enthusiastic album reviews:

'A joyous ride through up-tempo feel-good rockers, gospel-tinged ballads and crowd-pleasing sing-alongs. They’re a barnstorming live act, few do this with . such conviction.' ROCK ‘N’ REEL

BARTOUNE 12 years of experience and showmanship leaves this professional trio well versed at taking the audience on a journey. The hot-club style outfit travels through desert caravans, Mediterranean vibes and 40s swing-dance halls, depending on where the crowd, and the band, want to go! Their fresh sound and variety of instruments and rhythms keeps any audience interested. Gypsy Jazz, classic songs, mellow clarinet tones and driving Bari sax, all underpinned by the tight swing of vibrant guitar and Bass.

Casita PEE WEE ELLIS’ F U N K A N O VA Q U A R T E T In Pee Wee Ellis’ latest incarnation ‘Funka Nova’ he pairs up with his old friend and colleague Peter Fessler, with German rhythm section Guido May on drums and Joel Locher on acoustic bass creating a quartet where Funk meets Bossa Nova in a new and enchanting sound. Pee Wee Ellis’ remarkable story spans six decades, and throughout his 55 years as a saxophonist, band-leader, composer and arranger he has been considered a musician’s musician. From his time as Music Director for the James Brown Revue in the 1960s, where he co-wrote ‘Cold Sweat’ which created a new sound Funk to his latest CD release, ‘The Spirit of Christmas’, he has never ceased to be an innovator.

'...a unique and compelling Hot Club style outfit, both live and on record. The group displays how top-drawer musicians moving away from standard line-ups can often present a delightful and fresh alternative. 12 tracks of upbeat, Mediterranean-tinged fun stream by in no time and encourage repeated listening, not just for the innovative mix of instruments but especially the individual playing, ensemble work and soloing spread right across this invigorating album.' E D U C AT I O N & O U T R E A C H B U T T E R F L Y D AY Sunday June 25 From 12pm onwards Free A wonderful family day out in the Iford Manor orchard with guided butterfly walks through the beautiful Iford river valley, moth trap displays and bat roost viewing by infra-red camera, arts and crafts, face-painting and story-telling. Delicious Iford Manor cream teas and refreshments are available from the Iford Manor tea rooms or bring a picnic to enjoy on the river bank.

Children from three urban primary schools in Bristol, Bath and Trowbridge will participate together in this year’s exciting educational project – following the successful 2016 McQuest project based on Verdi’s Macbeth. It will culminate in a visit to Iford Manor for an ‘adventure day’ during the production of The Barber of Seville. The project (Go Figaro!) aims to encourage creative thinking by stimulating the children to create their own mini ‘operas’, or pieces of music theatre. The project will be kicked off by a performance to all the children of Figaro’s wonderful opening aria in Barber. As Figaro's 'apprentice hairdressers' they will consider gossip, secrets and other sensational aspects of life as revealed in Figaro's, 'Snip and Snoop Salon' with a specially composed Hairdressing Song as a chorus. Led by the team of experienced animateurs from Opera Sonic, each school will then create their own mini-scenes in three workshops. They will perform to each other at Iford before watching in the cloister selected scenes from the new production by Charles Court opera.

IFORD ARTS NEW G E N E R AT I O N A R T I S T S Under the leadership of Oliver Gooch, Iford Arts is committed to supporting emerging talent and continues to develop its young artists programme, which has this year attracted a significantly increased number of applicants. The 2017 scheme aims to deliver even more creative opportunities for young conductors, directors and designers, as well as for future singing stars, to work with the highest calibre opera practitioners. The scheme is growing in scope and reach as we undertake to broker more opportunities for our New Generation artists to learn skills, and also get more opportunities to perform in our area. By working with other local promoters we are beginning to arrange appearances for them as soloists in recitals, workshops and performances. In this way we can offer the artistry of our young performers to our surrounding communities. This year we plan to offer at least twelve places on the scheme.

For further news and information on how you can support the Iford Arts New Generation Scheme please visit www.ifordarts.org.uk. 16
