Vat DILeMMa senDs egaMIng operators to cUracao THERE ARE A variety of reasons and incentives for operators to select the most ideal jurisdiction in which to obtain a license. These could include a combination of tax, regulatory requirements, infrastructure and staff availability and access to other markets. While global Internet-based gambling is booming, online gambling operators are keenly focused on the jurisdictions’ tax policy for gambling. Many operators are now taking a second-look, particularly in light of possible whitelisting changes in the UK and other jurisdictions’ now applying VAT that is unrecoverable. The thought of losing market share to offshore competitors based in jurisdictions such as Curacao where operators pay much lower tax and, therefore, leave much more on the table to invest in marketing, etc. is sparked new life into the Curacao eGaming venue. Amendments to the VAT rules across the EU will invariably impact most operators. Through the introduction of a system which will enable tax authorities to monitor the cross-border provision of services, 2010 will see the dawn of a new era in VAT. Besides the pre-match and in-running offer, Kambi will also offer pool betting products, Supertoto and Superscore. Explain to me what, in your eyes, a B2B business in the gaming industry should encompass… All the talk about consolidation is about mergers between operators. However, another important part of the restructuring of the gaming industry is about production effi ciency. The product that has come furthest is casino; this is quite strange since it’s the least demanding product. There’s very little day-to-day work to be done and there is no need for liquidity (besides jackpots). Poker and bingo are scattered on several different platforms and many suffer from low liquidity. Sportsbetting is a very new phenomenon when it comes to B2B, but the potential is great. To build a good sportsbetting operation with a decent in-running solution, you need more than 100 people to run the day-to-day business, so it doesn’t make sense for every operator to do that on their own. We mentioned on the previous page that according to some, the B2B trend isn’t considered a key driver for today’s industry. What do you consider

to be the key drivers for the future of: A) iGaming in general The transition from land-based gaming to online remains a key trend, and it will continue over the coming years. The decisions of local regulators will have a huge impact on how the iGaming market will look in the future. They have already had a major impact in Italy and France and everyone is waiting for US regulators to open the market there. The size of global operators will become more and more important in meeting the future demands of scalability, flexibility and brand building. However, reregulation will also give new local entries an opportunity. The end-customer will demand the best product and service. They will not be as forgiving as they were in the early days of the industry. What have been known as USPs will now become hygiene factors. B) Sportsbetting as a product Betting in-running is the key driver – the development over the last fi ve years has been amazing. There is a constantly increasing demand for in-running events and ever more sophisticated bet offerings. Five years ago, it was: “Can I have an in-running bet on this Premier League game?”. Now the customer asks: “Can you offer next foul in a Philippine basketball match, and I want you to broadcast it as well!” A sportsbetting operator needs to deliver events and offers 24/7, in various channels (web/mobile) and with a user-friendly interface. The challenge is to accommodate all types of customers. The traditional competitive edge – to accept high stakes at competitive odds in order to appeal to the high roller segment – is still important given the value the high-roller segment is bringing in. It forces the organisation to constantly improve quality.
