50+ Ways St rengt h Training For Golf Improves Performance We researched and analyzed over 130 scientific studies in order to investigate the effect of strength training for golf on performance. As a result, we identified more than 50 ways strength training improves golf performance. Key Findings Strength training has been shown to increase driving distance in golf by as much as 10.9% in as little as 8 weeks. The overall carry distance also increases with strength training, with studies reporting increases ranging from 2.1% to 7.7% in 8 10 weeks. PG 20 | FEB 2020
CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE
CONTINUED FROM PREVIOUS PAGE
Lifting weights will also increase your distance on your irons, as studies demonstrated increases between 7.5% to 10.7%. Golfers saw significant improvements in swing speed with increases in club head speed by as much as 6.3% as a result of 6-12 weeks of strength training. Strength training produces faster ball speeds, with research showing speed increases ranging from 1.9% to 10.2% in 6-12 weeks. 9 weeks of isokinetic or isotonic strength training for pre-elite golfers increased their rotational power by 25.8% 35.0%, rotational force by 20.6% - 25.1%, rotational velocity by 9.1% - 13.3%, lead arm speed by 2.9% - 5.6%, and lead arm acceleration by up to 10.1%. Building strength and power for 11 weeks helped improve putting distance control by 29.6% on average. Core training alone can significantly improve drive PG 21 | FEB 2020
distance by 5% in elite golfers, as well as other physical characteristics, such as balance, flexibility, aerobic conditioning, and endurance. Although flexibility training is important for golfers, strength training has been shown to maintain and improve flexibility on its own. Reports show an 18.8% improvement in x-factor stretch, 25.0% in x-factor stretch rate, 25.0% in shoulder stretch, and 19.6% in shoulder stretch rate for golfers with handicaps < -3.0 on average in 9 weeks. Despite being low-impact, 40.0% of amateur golfers and 60.0% of professional golfers sustain an injury each season, primarily due to overuse and high levels of stress from torque overloading the body from making the same movement patterns again and again. Strength training can reduce the likelihood of sport-specific injuries by 33.0% and injuries from overuse by almost 50.0%. Click to Read the Full Story

Thompson?s Desire To Learn, Part icipat e M akes Him No. 1 In Top 100 When the PGA of Alberta?s head office decided to redesign an existing stream of interaction with education, performance and competition among its members, the idea may have met with a few raised eyebrows. But after its first year, no one seems to be arguing with the change. Especially Sean Thompson. In what has now become the Top 100 Program, Thompson, who is the head pro at the Cottonwood PG 24 | FEB 2020
Golf & Country Club in Calgary, was named the No. 1 guy in that field. That placement comes as the result of points earned through a variety of PGA of Alberta sponsored clinics, events, and tournaments throughout the 2019 season. ?The Top 100 program was based on a program we already had, called the Professional Development Program,? explained Trevor Rioux from the CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE

PGA of Alberta. ?It?s designed to incentivize and reward members who are involved in the association through educational initiatives, tournaments, volunteering. Basically, growing themselves as professionals in the interest of the association.? Rioux mentioned that it was noticed there wasn?t a lot of interest in the former identity of the program, so some changes had to be made. That was done and those are paying off, he agreed. ?We took a look at the model the B.C. zone has,?and emulated that program including, ?putting some cash prizes down for the top seven point-earners and rewarding our members that are involved in the association.? In speaking to his being named the top guy of the Top 100, with 91 points over the past season, Thompson said he feels that professionals must stay abreast of the business as it changes and what better way to do that than partaking in what?s PG 25 | FEB 2020
offered. And hey, the cash reward for doing so ain?t so bad either. The PGA of Alberta-sponsored events offer point values from two to 10, and run the gamut of activities from tournament play to volunteering at events like the PGA on Wheels, to attending and volunteering at the Buying Show(s), to taking part in the professional development series. Over the past year, Thompson garnered 91 attendance points, 10 more than the runner-up, Samuel Kirkness from Priddis Greens G&CC. ?I think this is really important,? Thompson continued. ?This program pools together a bunch of different areas as to why it?s important. From the education perspective, I think golf professionals have to continuously keep improving their skill set to do a better job on a day-to-day basis.

R&A And USGA Release Key Findings On Impact s Of
Dist ance In Golf The USGA and The R&A have issued the Distance Insights Report, which provides comprehensive research and analysis on the contributors to, and long-term impacts of, hitting distance in golf. After extensive stakeholder research, the report features more than 100 years of data, informed by a library of 56 supporting documents. It is accompanied by a 15-page conclusions paper from the governing bodies that summarizes their perspectives PG 26 | FEB 2020
on the long-term implications for the sport. The reports and library have been publicly released and can be found at usga.org/distanceinsights. To facilitate input from manufacturers and other stakeholders in the golf community, specific topics of further research will be identified and published within 45 days. It is expected that this important step in gathering input could take approximately nine months to one year. CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE

play from their longest tees. This can lead to a risk of many courses becoming lesschallenging, or obsolete. - Increased hitting distance can begin to undermine the core principle that the challenge of golf isabout needing to demonstrate a broad range of skillsto be successful.
Key findings of the project include: - There isa 100-year trend of hitting distance increasesin golf, as well asa corresponding increase in the length of golf courses, across the game globally The USGA and The R&A believe thiscontinuing cycle isdetrimental to the game?s long-term future. - The inherent strategic challenge presented by many golf courses can be compromised, especially when those courseshave not or cannot become long enough to keep up with increasesin the hitting distancesof the golferswho PG 27 | FEB 2020
- If coursescontinue to lengthen, it isat odds with growing societal concernsabout the use of water, chemicalsand other resources - Longer distancesand courses, longer teesand longer timesto play are taking golf in the wrong direction and are not necessary for a challenging, enjoyable and sustainable game. - A concern hasbeen identified that many recreational golfersare playing from longer teesthan is necessary relative to their hitting distances, and, in particular that the forward teeson many golf coursesare very long for many of the golferswho play from them.
