EDITOR'SDESK In si de Th i s Issue Golf is no different than other sports in its continual efforts to keep the game healthy and thriving for each generation. In order to do that it remains imperative to introduce the game to youngsters and give them opportunities to learn how to play and enjoy the pastime. To that end our cover story offers a terrific insight into the passion and generosity shown by the Bayview Place development group run by Patricia and Kenneth W. Mariash Sr. and how they?ve taken their support for golf in the Victoria area to a new level. Already the sponsors of the Mackenzie Tour - PGA Tour
Canada Bayview Place Victoria Open, the Mariash?s have stepped up to lend a huge helping hand for the development of junior golf in the capital city region. Read about that here. We also have some very interesting articles that look at the findings of the R&A and USGA?s annual research on driving distance in golf (click here), a fascinating new ?intelligent?golf ball unveiled at the PGA Show in Orlando (click here), and the importance of being properly fitted for clubs including the too often overlooked but critical element, the club shaft (click here). All that and plenty more, including some very amusing and entertaining videos along with news on BC?s best players both in the amateur and professional ranks, can be found in this month?s edition of The Scorecard.

Top 10 At Pebbl e Gi ves Tay l or Som e Br eat h i n g Room When Abbot sf or d?s Nick Taylor won the 2014 Sanderson Farms Championship in just his fourth start as a PGA TOUR regular, he earned more than just the $720,000 US top prize.
Click HERE For His Expan ded St at s St or y He must finish inside the top 125 on the FedEx Cup points list to retain his status on the PGA TOUR and his performance at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am on California?s Monterey Peninsula will help him meet that goal. Taylor finished tied for 10th place at Pebble Beach, earning a paycheque of $172,800 and some valuable FedEx Cup points. He now stands 70th on the points list, giving him some breathing room.
Taylor was also awarded a two-year exemption on the PGA TOUR. In other words, he had that precious commodity of job security on the PGA TOUR. That exemption expires after the 2017 season, meaning Taylor is playing with Taylor ?s finish at Pebble Beach some extra pressure this year. CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE

was his third top-10 result in 73 PGA TOUR starts. You could make the argument that apart from his win at the Sanderson Farms Championship, it was Taylor ?s most impressive performance on the PGA TOUR. His only other top 10 came last March when he tied for fifth at the Puerto Rico Open. That tournament, like the Sanderson Farms, is an event that is played opposite a World Golf Championship event. That means the likes of Jordan Spieth, Dustin Johnson and Jason Day -- who all competed at Pebble Beach -were not in the field at Puerto Rico or Sanderson Farms. Taylor ?s Pebble Beach cheque moved him over the $2 million mark in career earnings on the PGA TOUR. Taylor and fellow Abbotsford resident Adam Hadw in , who
T39th at Pebble Beach, both made the cut (T55 & T34) in this week?s Genesis Open at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif. Hadwin, who has had a solid start to 2017, currently stands 13th on the FedEx Cup points list. M R. SUNDAY: Vict or ia?s Jim Ru t ledge closed the Allianz Championship on the Champions Tour with a seven-under 65. If that sounds familiar, it should. Rutledge has made a habit of going low on Sundays. Trouble is, those fabulous Sunday finishes often follow less than stellar starts to his week. That was the case at the Allianz Championship, where Rutledge opened with an 80 before firing a three-under 69 in Saturday?s CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE

second round. He ended up tied for 62nd place and earned $2,538. Had he turned that opening round 80 into an even-par 72, Rutledge would have finished tied for 23rd and made more than $16,000. Rutledge?s 65 on Sunday came thanks to a sizzling 29, which included five birdies and an eagle, on the back nine at the Old Course at Broken Sound in Boca Raton, Fla. BUCHANAN REM EM BERED: Simon Fraser University has established the John Buchanan Golf Endowment in memory of the Clan?s longtime coach who died on Jan. 19 at age 77. The hope is the fund will provide one full-ride scholarship per year to a student golfer.
Buchanan spent 50 years at SFU, where he coached both the soccer and golf teams. In 2014 Buchanan received the Chancellor ?s award for his years of volunteer work with the golf teams at SFU. Each year, SFU will play host to the John Buchanan/SFU Golf Classic at Vancouver Golf Club in Coquitlam. This year ?s event goes April 10. SLOW STARTS: It has not been a stellar start for British Columbians through the first four events of the Web.com Tour season. Su r r ey ?s Adam Sven sson an d Roger Sloan of M er r it t made their 1st cut in 4 tries at this week?s stop in Panama while Ju st in Sh in of M aple Ridge has made one of four cuts after missing out in Panama. It started in 2007 when Ken and Patty first became involved with the Mackenzie / PGA Tour Canada's Victoria Open. That relationship grew to the point, when in 2013, Bayview Place, their development along Victoria?s Inner Harbour, became one of the title sponsors of the long-running tournament. Then, last year, the couple started looking at how they could further impact golf in the Capital region... to continue growing the game and growing the golf community. "You can't overvalue the brand relationship with UVic. I can't tell you how important it is for parents looking to get their kids involved in sports to see that (Vikes) brand. It's a mutually beneficial relationship, especially now that there will be the Bayview Place scholarship fund that is going to be used to provide financial support to the graduates of our tour who intend to pursue studies at UVic." The Bayview Vikes Jr. Tour has proven to be a strong training ground for area golfers. Vik es Tou r r egu lar Nolan Th or ou gh good won the 2016 BC
Amateur championship at the tender age of 15 (making him the youngest winner ever) and when asked about the experience of playing on the Vikes Tour, replied that "...it has meant a lot. Another Vikes Tour star, 14-year old Ak ar i Hayash i has played the Vikes' Tour since she was eight years-old and credits alumnus Naomi Ko (now the 138th ranked amateur in the world) and the culture of the tour for her success. "Naomi Ko mentored me and I want to do that for other girls," confirmed Akari. "The (Vikes) tour is more than just tournaments... it's a community of golfers." Bringing together the region's top professionals, amateurs and juniors, the newly established Bayview Place Vikes Performance Tour will see the elite from all three ranks tee it up head-to-head in two-day events.
Aside from continuing top flight competition, there is an added bonus. The top three players on the order of merit (one each from pro, amateur and junior) at the time of the Bayview Place DC Payments Open will receive sponsor 's exemptions into the field of the tournament to be held at Uplands GC (this year June 04-11). When all is said and done, it may be the totality of what the Mariash?s are supporting that makes the big difference. It is conceivable that a four-year old could join the Little Vikes, graduate to the Bayview Place Vike Jr. Tour, win that Order of Merit and a scholarship to attend UVIC, then play on the Bayview Place Performance Tour and earn a spot in the Bayview Place DC Payments Open. One of the driving forces behind the Performance Tour, Jef f Palm er , GM at Ar dm or e GC, sums up where he, and likely everybody else associated, sees this headed. "... What we know conclusively from PGA TOUR Shotlink statistics (based on millions of shots from PGA TOUR Players) is the closer
you get to the hole, the easier it is to score. This starts with performance on tee shots and then approach shots. specific principles of reasoning. Aided by the use of launch monitor technology such as TrackMan or Foresight, two of the protocols we use in our driver fittings are processes called SpeedSet and WeightSet.
Th ere i s a common mi sunderstandi ng i n th e gol f communi ty th at a l i gh ter sh af t eq uates to greater cl ub speed. Th i s, i n our ex peri ence, i s sel dom th e case. We know shaft weight has a profound impact on a golfer?s ability to generate club head
speed. In the WeightSet protocol we are measuring how to maximize Club Head Speed based on shaft weight. For the WeightSet protocol we ask golfers to hit 5 drivers with 5 different shaft weights (usually ranging from 40 ? 80 grams) and measure their average club head speed for the 5 shaft weights (using the same driver head). There is a common misunderstanding in the golf community that a lighter shaft CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE

equates to greater club speed. This, in our experience, is seldom the case. Once we have determined the shaft weight which creates the most club head speed we go to our second protocol, SpeedSet. In SpeedSet protocol again we ask golfers to hit 5 shots each with 5 shafts ranging from 43 inches to 47 inches to measure the effect shaft length has on average Ball Speed (again with same driver head).
As Ball Speed is an outcome of club head speed and centeredness of strike we can determine the shaft length which optimizes a player?s ball speed. While other factors need still be addressed in a fitting, by employing an evidence-based approach to measuring optimum shaft length and weight, we are well on our way to making a performance-based recommendation which gets our golfer the additional yardage they are looking for.
