Leading the pack at the conclusion of day one, Lu managed to fend off strong competition from Victoria?s Olivia Wu ? who had closed the gap to a one-shot deficit the previous day with a Round 2 low score of 72 ? and 12 year-old CP Women?s Open entrant, Vancouver?s Michelle Liu. Wu and Liu put up a valiant fight but their final round scores of 74 were not enough to catch the champion. a Checks All The Boxes For A Great That?s one of the reasons why the Parksville & Qualicum Beach area of Vancouver Island is such a great destination for a golf getaway. During my recent three-day visit -- we?ll call it the Mid-Island Express -- the golf was terrific. But so was the time spent between rounds. We had some great meals, enjoyed splendid oceanside accommodation at the Tigh-Na-Mara Seaside Spa Resort on Rathtrevor Beach, visited a couple of local craft breweries and went spelunking. Yes, spelunking. More on that later. PG 31 | OCT 2019
We?ll begin with the golf. Our trip began at Fairwinds Golf Course in Nanoose Bay and we were there 30 minutes after our ferry docked at Departure Bay in Nanaimo. Fairwinds has been a Vancouver Island golfing fixture since 1988. At 6,181 yards from the tips, it?s not long, but it?s certainly no pushover. It played host to the B.C. Junior Boys & Girls Championships this past summer and more than held its own. Click to Read the Full Story

Benitz related a story about Gamble Sands which illustrates that thought and has a Dr. Phil feel to it. He said a man came to him, saying the course saved his marriage. He explained his wife has never once asked for a replay rate to go for another 18 holes. This time she came off # 18 and asked 'can we play again?' ?In 30 years, she has never asked me that, so thanks for making me fall in love with her all over
again,?the husband told Benitz. This course is that good and that much fun, but I can?t speak for the couples counselling angle. It does come complete with an interesting back story. It began with Dan Gamble backpacking from Nova Scotia to make it rich during the Gold Rush in 1885. The gold didn?t pan out, but he did manage to establish a hotel, lumber mill and planted the first orchard in the region.

Original Plantation Course architects Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw oversaw the refinement project along with Troon?s Design, Development and Agronomy team and Golf Channel personality Mark Rolfing. During the 9-month project all 107 acres of fairways, tees and rough were grassed with Celebration Bermuda grass, while all greens were grassed with TifEagle Bermuda grass. A capillary concrete liner system was installed in all 93 course bunkers, allowing the bunkers to better weather heavy rain events. The Plantation Course?s practice green and chipping green areas were also rebuilt, with TifEagle Bermuda grass added. The practice range tee area was laser leveled and grassed with Celebration Bermuda grass. For a detailed,

hole, a costly bogey for Swan while McCulloch saved par allowed the Kingston native to reclaim a one-shot lead and paved the way for a dramatic finishing hole. McCulloch and Swan both managed to save par on the par-4 18th, confirming McCulloch as the victor. The runner-up finish for Swan earns him a berth in the 2020 Canadian Junior Boys Championship. He?ll join McCulloch and third-place finisher Daniel Bennett of Victoria as all three will be exempted to the next year?s national junior championship held August 10-13 at Rivershore Estate and Golf Links in Kamloops, BC. ?I was a little bit shaky at times and it was a bit of a grind,?said McCulloch. ?Great up and down on 18 to secure the win.
