In this month's issue of The Scorecard our cover story features the implementation of the new World Handicap Syst em, which has been put into play in Canada as of this month. The World Handicap System (WHS) has been in the planning stages for several years now and will see a unified method of computing golfer's handicaps around the globe.

And, being as this is also the first issue of The Scorecard for 2020, we felt we should have a quick look back at some of the top stories and performances from not only 2019 but the last decade. The year in golf for 2019 from a Canadian perspect ive is outlined on page 18, while one writer's opinion of the Top 10 golf product s can be found on page 22.

Now that it's here, there's little doubt that golfers across the country and this province are going to have some say on how they see it affecting their game. Please t ake just a couple of minut es and answer t he 5 quest ions (page 14) on the WHS and we'll have the results to share in an upcoming issue.

Sure to be of interest also are the 5 Biggest Rules Cont roversies in golf in 2019, that's on page 24, while you can see the Top 30 PGA TOUR event s of t he past decade (in 10 words or less for each) on page 26 as well as the Top 10 Majors of t he past decade on page 30.

Five Things You Need To Know About The New W orld Handicap Syst em

When the USGA and R&A modernized the Rules of Golf in 2019 ? the most comprehensive update in decades ? the governing bodies challenged the stereotype that they?re resistant to change. They?re set to do that again with the launch of the World Handicap System, which starting in 2020 will consolidate the half dozen handicap calculations previously used around the world into a single, portable Index. But there are distinctions with the WHS that golfers should PG 16 | JAN 2020

understand when the system goes live in the United States and dozens of other countries in January. (Some places, including the United Kingdom, Northern Ireland, Sweden, Portugal and Italy, won?t switch until later in the year.) Click to Read the Full Story

The other big news was the construction of The Ocean Club & Residences on a prime location overlooking the longest string of oceanside holes in the state. Completed in mid-2018, the accommodation complex comprises residences that are available for stay, fractional and full ownership. Also onsite is Hualani's, a restaurant that can boast its own nearby 'Farm at H?k?ala' bringing a new closeness to the term farm-to-table. On Wednesdays, you can enjoy the freshest tacos on Kaua?i that include the farm's seasonal ingredients and every

day you can enjoy the best Poke bowls on the island. On their website, Managing Director Gary Moore talks about the process. "We knew from the moment we saw the property in 2014 that it was a very unique place, one that required careful stewardship to match its unrivaled natural surroundings... (To date) we have completed 47 residences that are part of the Timbers Kauai ? Ocean Club & Residences, the golf course renovation, a 13-mile community trail system and an organic farm. Timbers Kauai has all the amenities of a five-star resort including Hualani?s restaurant? which has been a great addition for the island? two infinity-edge pools, a fitness center and a spa." The Nicklaus signature designed

PG 21| JAN 2020

course here actually has a history that goes back to the late 80's. Originally there were 36 holes but later consolidation saw Nicklaus oversee the best of the holes turned into one spectacular eighteen. Now the front nine plays entirely inland while the back nine plays nearer and on the ocean. The first nine holes are characterized by undulating terrain with a number of stand out holes. The par-four 436-yard third deserves its #1 handicap and players should be aware that the trees around the green complex can hide the prevailing trade winds. Well known for his intimidating par threes, Jack's uphill 219-yard 5th definitely is the most intimidating of the four on the course. Click to Read the Full Story

From Phil Mickelson To Tiger Woods: The Top 10 Major Championships Of The Decade With bookend Masters wins by Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods, the past decade has given golf fans more than their fair share of memorable major championships. But while star power on the leader board certainly helps to create a classic, Sunday drama is the ultimate factor. And spectacular recovery shots under pressure don?t hurt, either. Whittling down from 40 tournaments to 10 was a bit of a challenge, and there were several difficult omissions. Those include the eventful, but rules-controversy marred, 2010 PG 30 | JAN 2020

PGA Championship and 2018 U.S. Open. And apologies to Charl Schwartzel, but his four-birdie finish at Augusta National just misses, in part because we felt we had too many Masters already (If there?s an award for the most consistently exciting major of the past decade, it?s certainly the one that takes place in April). In any matter, here?s a look back at the 10 ? well, 11 ? that made our final cut. Click to Read the Full Story

Inside The USGA?s Driver Testing Process You can?t have too much spring in your step, but you can in your club. A clubface with excessive trampolining may flex too much, keeping the ball on the face too long and thus boosting ball speed beyond what is permissible. To keep tech from trumping skill, the USGA and R&A limit that flexibility, which in turn limits the energy the club can transfer to the ball. Back in the old days, the governing bodies fired a ball at a club with an air cannon to measure the coefficient of restitution (aka PG 32 | JAN 2020

COR, a measure of impact efficiency); now they use a more sophisticated method that involves a pendulum. The pendulum swings and the length of time its strike end stays on the clubface (aka ?characteristic time,?or CT) is measured in microseconds, which in turn provides a close approximation of COR. All this to ensure that a driver springs into action legally. Click to Read the Full Story

The men?s amateurs will be competing for the top-three titles, the women amateurs will be competing for the title of ?Champion?and ?Runner-Up? and the female professionals will battle for a $25,000 purse that will be distributed among the top-four finishers. The winner will receive $15,000 for first, while $6,000 will be presented to the runner-up.

?On behalf of the members and staff of The Glencoe Golf & Country Club, we are very supportive about adding the new female divisions,?said Ash Chadha, General Manager. ?The Forest course will be a great test for both men and women in the new integrated event. Figuring out which tees to play from is an ever-present concern for many golfers. And annoyingly, that?s at least in part because there are no truly helpful guidelines telling golfers where they should play from.

is going to have a distinct disadvantage against the 8 handicap who hits the ball a mile, if they were to play off the same tees. And as for female golfers, the range might be even more tricky to pinpoint with a formula.

Some courses suggest tees based off a player?s handicap, which is pretty much the standard, but it?s still not perfect. No two players are the same, after all. That wily retired golfer at your local club who doesn?t hit the ball very far but whose wicked short game helps keep him at an 8 handicap

But for now, try this chart provided by the good people over at Athletic Motion Golf. Now, like anything, it?s not perfect, especially for beginning golfers, but I found it provides a helpful guidepost.
