In si de t h i s Issue In this month's issue of The Scorecard we have lots for you as the golf season in BC gets closer and closer to being in full swing. Last month's World Handicap Syst em Survey revealed that a number of you were at least aware that a new handicap system was coming into effect, although a couple of wrinkles in the way your scores will be calculated still got people's attention. See the results on page 12. Also, coming up in March is the annual Sport BC Athlete of the Year Awards and included in the categories are coaching recognition awards. This year the sport of golf sees two coaches as finalists, Christ ine Wong (Langara College) as Female Coach of The Year and UBC's Chris Macdonald as Male Coach of The Year (page 20). Golf coaches do an awful lot of behind the scenes work and it's nice to see them receive this kind of recognition, so good luck to both Christine and Chris. PG 8 | NOV 2019
In this day and age of 'hitting bombs' as Phil Mickelson is so fond of saying, the ruling bodies of golf have been studying the overall effects of 'Dist ance in Golf' for a while and have released some key findings in this area. See what they have to say on whether going long is good...or bad for the game going forward (page 16). Golf Canada announced their 2020 Team Canada Young Pro Squad and once again there is a solid BC influence with both players and coaches, find out who on page 28. Along with celebrating BC's own Nick Taylor winning his 2nd career PGA TOUR title in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am (page 36), we also have PGA members voting on their favourit e courses (page 18), how to apply t o be a volunt eer at t his year's CP Women's Open at Shaughnessy G&CC (page 40) and the return of a very humorous golf comic strip, Life In The Trap on page 42.

In last month's edition of The Scorecard, the first for 2020, we put forward a survey questionnaire for golfers in British Columbia to get a sense of what they were thinking and indeed how much they may even be aware of the World Handicap System. The WHS is being implemented worldwide, with Canada adopting the new system as of the beginning of this year. PG 12 | FEB 2020
As is often the case, the answers proved informative, at times slightly surprising - both positively and occasionally in a negative sense, with only one question appearing to catch responders unaware. Following are the survey questions & answers A follow up to this survey will certainly be in order once the WHS has had time to be in place long enough to garner responses from golfer's reaction to its effect. R&A And USGA Release Key Findings On Impact s Of
Dist ance In Golf The USGA and The R&A have issued the Distance Insights Report, which provides comprehensive research and analysis on the contributors to, and long-term impacts of, hitting distance in golf. After extensive stakeholder research, the report features more than 100 years of data, informed by a library of 56 supporting documents. It is accompanied by a 15-page conclusions paper from the governing bodies that summarizes their perspectives PG 16 | FEB 2020
on the long-term implications for the sport. The reports and library have been publicly released and can be found at usga.org/distanceinsights. To facilitate input from manufacturers and other stakeholders in the golf community, specific topics of further research will be identified and published within 45 days. It is expected that this important step in gathering input could take approximately nine months to one year. CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE

play from their longest tees. This can lead to a risk of many courses becoming lesschallenging, or obsolete. - Increased hitting distance can begin to undermine the core principle that the challenge of golf isabout needing to demonstrate a broad range of skillsto be successful.
Key findings of the project include: - There isa 100-year trend of hitting distance increasesin golf, as well asa corresponding increase in the length of golf courses, across the game globally The USGA and The R&A believe thiscontinuing cycle isdetrimental to the game?s long-term future. - The inherent strategic challenge presented by many golf courses can be compromised, especially when those courseshave not or cannot become long enough to keep up with increasesin the hitting distancesof the golferswho PG 17 | FEB 2020
- If coursescontinue to lengthen, it isat odds with growing societal concernsabout the use of water, chemicalsand other resources - Longer distancesand courses, longer teesand longer timesto play are taking golf in the wrong direction and are not necessary for a challenging, enjoyable and sustainable game. - A concern hasbeen identified that many recreational golfersare playing from longer teesthan is necessary relative to their hitting distances, and, in particular that the forward teeson many golf coursesare very long for many of the golferswho play from them. birdie on the 17th. He finished at 19-under 268, earning a two-year exemption on the PGA TOUR. Mickelson wasn?t the only player who struggled. Dustin Johnson shot a 78. Matt Every, in the third-to-last group, shot 80. Jason Day closed with a 75. The best round and best finish belonged to Jordan Spieth, who chipped in to save par on his final hole for a 67. That narrowly moves him back into the top 50 and made him eligible for the World Golf Championship in Mexico City two weeks later. Streelman also left with a trophy. He teamed with Arizona Cardinals receiver Larry Fitzgerald to easily win the pro-am for the second time in three years. Click HERE for complete final scoring.
