INSIDE THIS ISSUE In this month's issue of the Scorecard, our cover story (page 12) looks at the newly launched First Tee - British Columbia chapter of Golf Canada's First Tee program. BC Golf 's Brad Ziemer spoke with First Tee BC's manager, Shayain Gustavsp, to gain insight regarding the new national program that has replaced Future Links as Golf Canada's junior introductory and development program. Brad also has the wrap ups and stories to go with the BC Women's Amateur (page 20), BC Amateur (page 36) and the girls and boys junior championships,on pages 14 and 16. Unfortunately, along with the good stories, Brad has also written in memoriam pieces for two wonderfully well-liked and respected PG 8 | JULY 2021
contributors to the game of golf. Players and officials at the just completed BC Amateur learned on the eve of the event that former champion Steve Berry had passed away. A nice tribute was paid to Steve prior to the opening tee shot and Brad writes about him and his accomplishmentson page 38. Sadly, just a day later we learned of the passing of longtime Province Sports writer Kent 'Cookie' Gilchrist who had covered golf among other sports for some 37 years for the local morning paper. Brad also pays tribute to his former colleague and close friend on page 40. On the lighter side we do offer the latest from Seattle's Rick Newell's Life In The Trap series (page 26) to hopefully bring a smile to some faces.

Nanaimo's Sandy Harper Preaching Patience After Stroke Recovery Sandy Harper has always taken pride in the way he has conducted himself on the golf course, where his excellence over many years earned the Nanaimo resident a place in the BC Golf Hall of Fame. No matter the score, Harper remained unflappable. That has become more difficult in the past 10 months as the 64-year-old Harper recovered from a stroke he suffered last August.
