INSIDE THIS ISSUE In this issue of The Scorecard our cover image is one of many that reflect the damage inflicted at the Hope Golf Course last November when the province suffered the effects of an 'atmospheric river '. The water raging down the Coquihalla River caused considerable carnage to the golf course leaving it under more than 3 feet of silt in many areas. Yeoman work by the club with assistance through the BC Amateur Sport Fund is bringing the layout back to life. Other facilities in BC are also being helped out by the fund, read Brad Ziemer 's story on page 12. Of course we're always pleased to offer the latest editions of Br ad's BC Golf Not es starting on page 28 as he reports on a small BC business doing its part to help take on prostate cancer through the sale of some very PG 8 | FEB 2022

special golf products to assist the Canadian Cancer Society. Brad also has stories on a couple of BC's successful young female golfers, including Hannah Lee coming home to take a role with Northview GC on page 14. In addition you can read about Leah John's first collegiate victory in his notes from page 22. We're pleased to see that young people from BC are continuing to be recognized with the prestigious Evans Scholarship. Victoria's Holly Stewart is the latest to earn a full scholarship to the University of Washington and you can see that story on page 20. Along with several other interesting stories, you should enjoy John Gordon's view on 'Reimagining Golf ' on page 30. Enjoy your golf, everyone, and please stay safe.

Hope Becomes Reality For Golf Courses And Others In Need Thanks To BC Amateur Sport Fund Eric Beamish isn?t sure the driving range addition at Salt Spring Island Golf Club would have been built last year without the help of the B.C. Amateur Sport Fund. Hope Golf Club is planning to use the fund to raise donations to repair some of the damage to infrastructure from last fall?s devastating floods. And Prince George Golf & Curling Club, which has already used the fund to raise money for minor driving range improvements, is planning to use it again to help rebuild its 15th green. Surrey, BC's Hannah Lee Begins Different Kind Of Golf Journey At Northview For many years growing up, Northview Golf & Country Club was Hannah Lee?s home away from home. She pounded balls on its driving range, spent countless hours on its putting green and gained an intimate knowledge of the Ridge and Canal courses at the Surrey facility. Northview helped Lee develop into one of British Columbia?s top junior players. She became a member of Golf Canada?s national junior team and earned herself a scholarship to play collegiate golf at the University of Oklahoma. READ COMPLETE STORY HERE PG 14 | FEB 2022

Holly Stewart Claims The Pot Of Gold At The End Of Her Caddying Rainbow Holly Stewart was 12 years old when she began caddying at Victoria Golf Club and in those days it often felt like the bag she was carrying weighed as much as she did. On some days, particularly when the wind whipped off the water and swept across the oceanside layout, her ?loop?was something of a balancing act. "As a tiny little 12 year-old I did not have good balance. I slid down hills a few times because I couldn?t stand up.? READ COMPLETE STORY HERE PG 20 | FEB 2022

Reimagining golf For the most part, I enjoyed and appreciated Richard Moss?s 2013 book The Kingdom of Golf in America. Until the very last paragraph. After 355 pages, Moss took a double bogey on the (figurative) 18th hole. ?Golf?s problems are rooted in the seismic changes in the economy and the culture of the past 40 years. If the golf community responds to these changes by dramatically changing the game, by making it shorter, easier or by changing the rules, it will be a profound mistake. Golf is not best seen as a consumer product ? ?Not? READ COMPLETE STORY HERE PG 30 | FEB 2022
