InsideGol f Edit or

In si de t h i s Issue In this edition of Inside Golf's digital magazine our cover story deals with a topic that's been of interest to Canadian golf fans for years. The 'debat e over t he dat e' for the RBC Canadian Open has been an issue for a long time and now that it has been moved, what might that mean going forward? (Page 12) And in keeping with the need to address continually nurturing the great game of golf we have a fine feature story from Brad Ziemer about the wonderfully popular 'Take A Kid To The Course' program on page 14.

You can also read on page 22 about Golf Canada's state-of-the-art nat ional t raining cent re that's housed at Bear Mountain Golf Resort in Victoria and how it has been so well received by coaches, trainers and players alike in the growth and development of the most promising young golfers in our country. Of course we have plenty of news throughout the magazine on great deals to be found at golf facilities in Western Canada and beyond as well as an update on the World Handicap Syst em on page 42, Amphibious Golf Carts on page 30 and a video link where you can see how some aspiring young golfers fared in a surprise chipping contest against Jason Day and Jordan Spieth on the Jimmy Fallon Show (page 34). It became so popular with kids, their parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and guardians that the word 'week' had to be dropped. ?We dropped it a long time ago,?says Nat halie Lavalee, chief operating officer of the NGCOA. ?We used to contain it to a week, but our members were saying, you know what, we really run it for the season or for the month. So now we have made it really, really flexible for them.? What is now simply Take a Kid to the Course officially begins July 3. Some 715 member courses of the NGCOA are expected to participate this year in a program that continues to grow. ?Every year it grows and really there?s no attrition,? says Lavalee. ?We had 705 courses last year. Our target for this year is 715. It is PG 16 | JUL 2018

looking like we are going to reach those numbers, which is a great, great thing.?

It gets juniors introduced to golf, it getsthem excited in kind of a fun, nonintimidating way The concept is a simple one. At participating courses, kids under the age of 16 play for free with a paid adult. From the NGCOA?s perspective, the program serves two purposes. It helps introduce juniors to the game. And it promotes family time.

The tenets of the new system focus on three main objectives: #1. To encourage as many golfers as possible to obtain and maintain a handicap; #2. To enable golfers of differing abilities, genders and nationalities to transport their handicap to any course globally and compete on a fair and equitable basis; and #3. To indicate with sufficient accuracy the score a golfer is reasonably capable of achieving on any course around the world, playing under normal conditions. Some of the features of the new system: 1. Flexibility in formats of play, allowing both competitive and recreational rounds to count for handicap purposes. 2. A minimal number of scores needed to obtain a new handicap; A PG 44 | JUL 2018

recommendation that the number of scores needed to obtain a new handicap be 54 holes from any combination of 18-hole and 9-hole rounds. 3. An average calculation of a handicap taken from the best eight of the last 20 scores. 4. A calculation that considers the impact that abnormal course and weather conditions might have on a player?s performance each day, daily handicap revisions. 5. A limit of a Net Double Bogey for the maximum hole score (for handicapping purposes only). 6. A maximum handicap limit of 54.0 regardless of gender. Given worldwide alignment towards a single system, all parties will now embark on a two-year transition period targeting implementation in 2020. For more visit golfcanada.org

Primarily set in rainforest, there are virtually no two holes the same and it is hard to pick a favourite. The tight, par-four ninth with the famous tree in the fairway and demanding approach may be the choice of the more masochistic but for others, it might be the reachable par-five fourth. While there are many recreational golfers who play here, this layout is not a walk-in-the-park. Greens are generally small and most are also raised, so accuracy is always at a premium. Tight, crowned fairways will reward those who can work the ball. Built on quick-draining, sandy soil, you can usually play here an hour after even heavy rain.
