The Kamloops area has established itself as a golf destination market and Kamloops G&CC sometimes gets overlooked in a market that includes the likes of Tobiano, Rivershore, The Dunes and Big Horn Golf & Country Club (formerly Sun Rivers). It continued during the move to 27 holes in 2004 which was definitely done with the mindset of not messing with the wetlands that Mother Nature had originally laid out. ?We definitely stuck our nose in and said we really wanted these areas left as pristine as we could,?said Innisfail Head Professional Jim Boomer. ?As we can see today how important that is to have what we have but to have it in such a nice natural setting.?

It started when Christ en Sweet , Chair Red Deer Chapter of Ducks Unlimited, approached the course about hosting a golf tournament for Ducks Unlimited. The project decided upon was having Junior Forest Wardens build nest boxes for the ducks which could open some eyes as to what Ducks Unlimited does in Central Alberta. The R&A and the USGA completed their annual review of driving distance in golf, producing a research report that documents and evaluates some significant findings from the 2017 season. Introduced in 2015, the annual report examines driving distance data from seven of the major worldwide professional golf tours, based on nearly 300,000 drives per year. The data from studies of male and female amateur golfers is also included. The 2015 and 2016 editions of the distance report presented the increases in driving distance since 2003 as a slow PG 46 | AUG 2018

As noted in previous annual reports, variability in driving distance of four or more yards from season to season on any one tour is not uncommon. However, this level of increase CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE

across so many tours in a single season is unusual and concerning and requires closer inspection and monitoring to fully understand the causes and effects. As the review of this issue progresses, The R&A and the USGA remain committed to the spirit of the 2002 Joint Statement of Principles which recognize that distance impacts many aspects of golf and that any further significant increases in hitting distances at the highest level are undesirable. Increases in distance can contribute to demands for longer, tougher and more resource-intensive golf courses at all levels of the game. These trends can impact the costs to operate golf courses and put additional pressures on golf courses in their local environmental landscape. For More visit randa.org or usga.org PG 48 | AUG 2018

USGA FUNDS Resear ch That Hel ps Reduce Water Use It may be simple but the best way to reduce water use and maintain quality playing conditions is to establish grasses that use less water. And the USGA is helping with that by helping develop strains of warm-season grasses such as bermuda grass or zoysia grass that naturally use less water than cool-season grasses. In the past, these grasses were PG 64 | AUG 2018

only used in warmer climates they lacked cold tolerance. Over the years, the USGA has supported the development of many warm-season cultivars with improved cold tolerance. These cultivars produce high-quality playing surfaces, withstand winter conditions in colder climates and help conserve water. Visit usga.org for the full story

First-time visitors will find a course that is well-conditioned and straight forward. Everything is pretty much right in front of you. It?s also an easy walk, providing you aren?t playing on one of those extremely hot summer days when temperatures can top out in the high 30s. ?I think you have to position yourself well off the tee here,?general manager Kerry Ward says in an interview. ?The bunkers are plentiful and they are well-positioned. They are not just there for aesthetics.?
