10 TIPS TO NAIL YO 1. Drink coffee during Coffee Break. Seriously, the only reason that ‘coffee break’ is called ‘coffee break’ is because of coffee! So, please, stop with this soft drink/energy drink stupidity. I know, they are delicious, but it’s not the time! No coffee? Then make sure to walk to the organising team and say the traditional ‘Why is it called coffee break if there is no coffee?’ Trust me, this will really show them the EYP side to your personality. 2. Stay hydrated. This is probably the only serious tip in the whole article and the only one you should really follow. Anytime I am at an EYP event, I somehow can’t manage to get enough water (probably because of all of those drink sponsors). Because of this, just remember to drink as much as you can when you have the opportunity, and don’t lose your cup! 3. Sit with your committee at lunch. Now that you’ve met each other at Teambuilding, it really is the time to dump those friends from school. When you sit with your committee, apart from making your chair very happy, you are showing something to the rest of the session: you are a team, and you will stand strong as such throughout the session. 4. Prepare your reasons for (not) being vegetarian. You can start this one off by saying how unhealthy the food is, and then go on a tangent about how healthy you actually eat in your everyday life (even though you know it is not true). But, seriously, in EYP there is the highest vegetarian to “normal-people” ratio you will EVER see. At some point during the session, you’ll have a friendly debate about why someone is/ is not vegetarian. My personal advice is to prepare a list of Pros and Cons of being vegetarian beforehand, this way you won’t be caught on the spot! 5. Read things on the laptop, even if a notebook would have done just fine. EYP is all about looks. Would you rather stand up with a piece of paper or with your state-of-the-art Macbook? We all know the answer to that question. You can do it when you go on stage or the floor, you can use to stick post-its, have speeches written or post visible messages directed to the Board of the session. This way, you look super smart to everyone else but you don’t lose the post-its functionality. It’s a win-win! 6. Include a ‘Raise awareness’ in your resolution. This is the most important part of your whole resolution. To start with, it always comes in handy and has saved resolutions many times throughout the years. It is the master key, the thing that you hear over and over in EYP but never grows old. Now that you know about it, please use it wisely.

YOUR SESSION! 7. Cry at the Closing Ceremony. This one is kind of a hard one when you are a delegate; all officials seem to get emotional all of a sudden and you are bored to death. Are you feeling emotional but can’t manage to squeeze out even one tear drop? Then follow this three simple steps: Make sure you’ve drunk plenty of water, and think of something really sad you’ve seen. If that doesn’t work, you can always ask the Organising Team to go get you an onion. 8. Learn ‘Imagine’ by John Lennon by heart. Yes, the European Anthem is also important, but where you will prove you know your EYP is whilst singing this masterpiece. It will also be a time for saying goodbye to your new friends and closing an experience that you will always remember. 9. Write a Facebook post about how EYP has changed your life. We’ve all done it at some point, and it truly is an essential part of this organisation. Yes, some people may consider it basic, but in reality, it is the ultimate test to prove yourself as an EYPer. 10. Make friends. This may sound like a cheesy point, but if there is any reason EYP is what it is today, it is because of the people in it. Just think of your committee: you may have chosen the same committee because you have the same interests. In your committee, there are going to be a lot of smart, inspirational people who, just like you, like EYP! And the best things about Regional Sessions is that you all live nearby! EYP is full of incredible individuals, and this is proven in every session anyone attends. So, who knows, maybe during this weekend you befriend someone who will be there for you for the rest of your lifetime. By Yago Molano Gómez

BREAKFAST AROUN Wake up everyone, it is time for breakfast. Everybody knows that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It is essential for an energetic and happy day. Nowadays, having breakfast can be examined under two types: traditional and modern breakfasts. Modern breakfast usually refers to a simple one that is consist of a piece of toast and a glass of juice. It can help you in a hurry but there is no need for a boring small breakfast when you have a chance to eat a breakie feast. All around the world, people eat comforting, filling meals with a pinch of their culture. Breakfast varies in the wide range of foods from country to country. For some countries, breakfast means different recipes with eggs and some bread, for others it is chocolate-filled pastries and sometimes even some fruit. While it is a must to drink coffee in the mornings in some countries, tea takes the place of coffee in others. While foods and drinks on the breakfast table are changing place to place, the joy and love of having breakfast do not change. Having mentioned the differences between breakfasts around the world, now it is time for having a closer look on the local breakfasts of countries. Germany You can find anything you want on the German breakfast table. They have very varied and rich breakfast with a lot of food like assorted breads, cold meats, vegetables, cheese, butter and jam. Germans are known for their bakery, the best in the world, that’s why you can find any kind of bread with any kind of shape and ingredients. France and Italy Italian and French people have very similar breakfast. They like to have the first meal of day fast and simple. Both countries breakfast includes a cup of coffee and a type of brioche. Italians specifically prefer cappuccino, a traditional Italian coffee, and French prefer croissant as the type of brioche. Australia When we talk about Aussies’ breakfast we must mention one thing: vegemite! It is a must in an Australian breakfast table. Aussies love it so much that they eat it every morning. Their breakfast generally consists of some bread, vegemite and fruit. Aussies also like to have British breakfast sometimes.

HOW TO TRAVEL O Most of the people like travelling. Every year millions of us go abroad to see new countries, cultures and lifestyles. In the past, young people were not able to go abroad for travelling purposes unlike in recent times.. If you are an EYPer, you start to travel more frequently but there is only one problem for us which is money and actually it is not really a problem if we follow the tips outlined in this article. 1. Travel Overnight Taking night scheduled travel vehicles for your journey is a very smart way of saving money. When you travel overnight, you just cut your money for accommodation as you will be staying at a train, plane or bus for the night. Also, you will be saving your day time for sightseeing and exploring the city as you are arrived to city in the morning and will left at night. You will have a whole day for city. Apart from saving money from avoiding to pay accommodation, night trains or planes are sometimes even cheaper than the normal ones. 2. Eat from Alleys It is a well known fact that restaurants in the city centers, squares or the ones near to the sightseeing buildings are always more expensive than the local restaurants in the alleys. Also, small restaurants in the alleys are generally serve you more delicious local foods that can portray their countries cuisine. Moreover, mainstream restaurants in the city centers generally offer you more common or international food rather than the local delicatessen.

ON A SHOESTRING 3. Shop from Supermarkets for Lunch This is a really good way to spend your lunch if you want to use its money for something else as it is a great way to live on budget when you are abroad. Supermarkets give you the opportunity of having a quick bite, by enjoying sandwiches, drinks, yogurts and snacks. You can also take some more to carry them with you in your bag. As a result, spend the money you saved from lunch on something else such as day activities. 4. Plan expensive things before There will be always unmissable sites in the country you are visiting but these activities may be expensive so researching before going abroad and calculating how much those will cost will help you around arranging your expenses. You don’t need to cut from your activities when you are on budget, just plan them before the journey. 5. Hitchhiking It is not very common in Europe as European countries have very good metro lines but you can’t imagine how helpful to thumb up in roads of Asia and America can be. It is not only a good way of saving money but also a culture that connects foreign people to each other and a means for travelling fast from one place to another. If you believe that you can manage to auto-stop abroad, you will be enjoying free travel, meeting new friends and families and also the cultural harmony these will give you during your journey. 6. Couchsurfing as Accommodation Couchsurfing is one of the newest and the most modern ways of spending a night during your travels. It is also the best way to save money when you are staying for a long time at a city. Couchsurfing is basically matching with the local people of the city and staying at his/her house for the duration of your visit free of charge. It may seem insecure but if you open your heart to people, they will hug you in every way and will try to serve you in the best way.

FROM COCOA T Nowadays, many people are sceptical towards cryptocurrencies because they don’t understand why so many investors trust in them. But, thinking about it, what is money really? Is it just a coin? Clearly not, as we now have it in all sort of ways. We can all probably agree that money is something which we all believe has value, so that we can trade our skills more easily. Can you imagine what would happen if suddenly, we all decide that money has no value? What would happen to all your savings? What would you now do with that insignificant piece of paper? The only reason we can sleep at night, without having this recurring thought, is because years and years have proven that money is trustworthy, even if it doesn’t exist. But, what about those first people that were told the revolutionary concept of money? Where did money start? In this article, I will be explaining when money was invented, look at some extravagant concepts of money, to finish off by coming back to cryptocurrency. It is important to say that money has been invented many times in many places at many different points in time. That said, many historians believe that the first ‘money’ was the Mesopotamian ‘Barley Standard’ which was invented around 3000BC. The barley money was, simply, barley; fixed amounts of barley grains used as a measure to exchange for other goods. Standardised bowls were mass-produced so that, whenever anyone needed to make a payment, they could measure the necessary amount of more easily. For Mesopotamians, it was easier to trust Barley as the first type of money because it has real value: humans can eat it. This type of money is different to current money in many aspects: to start with, it has intrinsic value; the Mesopotamians used it to make bread, beer and soup; and it wasn’t durable, permanent like our system – the longest you could store money without spending it was a year or two. One of the limitations, or advantages, of this system was that no one could get terribly rich. Even if the Mesopotamians saw Barley’s worth for what it was worth, and set prices for everything else in Barley, it was still very hard for them to accept Barley when they knew that what they really wanted was a new shirt. There are two main reasons that led to the success of the Barley Standard: first of all, the King Priests trusted it and asked for a payment in Barley, and second of all, your neighbours wanted. This is the huge success of money compared to other myths: it is successful because you only have to think that someone else thinks it is valuable.

9

TO BITCOINS Inevitably, this led the King Priests of Mesopotamia, about 500 years later, to create a more expensive currency, which was now the only currency accepted to pay taxes: the silver shekel. The silver shekel was not a coin, but rather 8.33 grams of silver. This had no inherent value for the people; it was only valuable as a symbol of status, used in jewellery, but was not edible and was too soft to use for weapons: completely useless. This was obviously harder for the Mesopotamians. However, because of the trust the King Priests had in the system and the fact that they had paid with Barley their whole lives made the revolutionary idea easier to accept. Barley has not been, by far, the only edible currency throughout the ages. Some of the best known examples include the cocoa beans, the Aztec’s preferred currency, as well as salt, which has long been used as a form of currency throughout the world. It has been so popular that the word ‘salary’ actually comes from the Latin word ‘salarium’, which means ‘money used to buy salt’. One of my favourites was Parmigiano cheese, which at one point in Italy was even accepted by banks as collateral in case an individual couldn’t repay their loans. Maybe the weirdest currency of all has been Rai Stones, which, over the years, were made bigger and bigger. It took so long to make them, that they gained value depending on the problems they had encountered whilst making the Rai Stone, and even the people that had died doing it. After they were made, Rai Stones were not moved from the place, simply their ownership changed. Once, whilst transporting a stone across the sea, the boat sank and the stone was lost. It was simply acknowledged that is was in the sea, and the owner still sold it, even if the new owner never saw it! When you think about it, it really is not that different to our current system: of about $60 trillion, the total sum of all money in the world, less than $6 trillion is printed. So, more than 90% of our money only exists in computer servers. So then, what really is new about cryptocurrencies that makes it so difficult to grasp? In reality, only that is really changing is that, instead of trusting governments and banks you are trusting computer encryption and, for example with Bitcoin, the artificial scarcity that only 21 million bitcoins will ever be created. So truly, the reason people don’t get cryptocurrencies is because they don’t understand that money is simply a creation of our shared-imagination.

WE CHOOSE, YO 2018 just began and we’re already tired of school/college. What is better than sleeping? Using your free time to improve your culture and to discover new hobbies. In my case, my favourite is watching TV shows and get involved in every detail and drama. I’m bringing you my top 5 TV shows – each one is completely different from the one before, so you can watch the trailers once you are home and choose the one that suits you best (or not at all, because it’s okay to get out of your comfort zone). 1. Suits This television series is about the life of Mike Ross and a fake Law degree. Mike gets a job in a real New York firm and starts working for Harvey Specter. This relationship is the main focus of the show. For those who are interested in law or not interest at all, this drama series is ideal. You will understand the art of persuasion, of thinking ahead and much more complicated matters. Number of Seasons: 7 / Opening theme: Greenback Boogie by Ima Robot. 2. Star Also a drama television series, Star tells the story of three girls with different life backgrounds who get involved in music, fame and other risky-situations. When I first saw the trailer, I truly believed that this would only focus on music but there are crimes, lies, deaths and betrayals. As the name sates, Star Davis is the main character – a girl who spent her whole life in foster homes, who saw her mother die and who always wanted to pursue a career in music, no matter what is cost. Number of seasons: 2 / Opening theme: I Bring Me by the three lead roles.

OU WATCH! 3. Peaky Blinders Peaky Blinders is a British show – again there is drama but also crime and a lot of action. It tells the story of a gang (the Peaky Blinders themselves) and their moves after World War I. Besides the gang, the story focus on Tommy Shelby – the boss. It is perfect for those curious and history-lovers since it happens during one of the heaviest moments in history – the world after destruction and chaos of a war. Number of Seasons: 4 / Opening theme: Red Right Hand by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds 4. The End of the F****ing World I’m not going to lie – this is my favourite so far. It is a series that makes you want to watch everything in a row. The episodes’ length is super short – 20 minutes each (which is even better when you don’t have much time available but still want to do something). In this series James is a seventeen year old boy who believes that is a psychopathic teenager until he meets Alyssa – an extra rebellious girl. Every second is intense – you hear their thoughts, you see them running away, killing someone and even falling in love with each other. I recommend it 100% if you want to get another life perspective and, besides that, if you want to be surprised. Number of seasons: 2 / Song: Keep on Running by Spencer Davis Group 5. Stranger Things The series everyone talks about. It is quite different from the previous since it is more science-fiction. It happens during the 80s in Indiana where a laboratory there is constantly doing scientific research – but not the “typical kind”, it involves paranormal and supernatural activities. A portal to another dimension is created and it starts to affect the population and to cost several lives. On the 1st season some die, some are attacked and someone escapes. On the 2nd one, a year later, someone is rescued, someone is still endangered and others are hidden. It is for you to find out who those people are. Number of seasons: 2 / Opening theme: Stranger Things by Dixon and Stein

NOBEL PRIZE WI Kazuo Ishiguro - Literature The Japanese writer was part of the predictions made in the last years together with his fellow citizen Haruki Murakami. His writings are read all over the world and his books have been translated to more than 25 languages. His novels are fully written in English and express in the simplest of ways the deep thoughts inside the anguishing and painful environments of war. He started writing in the 1980s and had a great step up after writing ‘The Remains of the Day’, a novel on the relationship between Stevens and his housekeeper. However, his success was culminated with his 2005 novel, the remains of the day, in which he deals with the relationship between three former classmates and their connections with life and death. He remains a classic in the contemporaneous literature and an example for correct and precise, yet simple, writing in the English Language. Notable works: - An Artist of the Floating World - The Remains of the Day - When We Were Orphans - Never Let Me Go Jeffrey C. Hall, Michael Rosbash and Michael W. Young – Medicine The Karolinska Institute awarded these three American researchers the Nobel Prize for Medicine “for their discoveries of molecular mechanisms controlling the circadian rhythm”. The cicardian rhythm is any biological process that displays an endogenous oscillation every 24 hours. This means, in plain words, that these American researchers discovered connections between this cycle and the processes happening inside the human body, at the molecular level. Their discovery brings great advances to the understanding of the relationship that we have with our surroundings and how we can control and perform better in different health measures if we work in coordination with the cicardian rhythm.

INNERS 2017 Richard Thaler – Economic Sciences The importance of understanding the complicated connected that unite human psychology and decisions have had great interests in the economic literature and academic world in the last years. Since the creation of game theory and cooperation games, behavioural economics and decision-making microeconomics have had very important relations and consequences in the overall understanding of Economics, reshaping its approach in the teaching and research. For his contributions, Richard Thaler was awarded the Nobel Prize for Economic Sciences. He explores the general assumption of rationality in his work and the application that rationality has in real-life examples. In the last years, his work develops more into the understanding of how companies and governments try to make the population happier and drive them towards particular economic decisions. Notable works: - The Winner’s Curse: Paradoxes and Anomalies of Economic Life. - Quasi Rational Economics - Misbehaving: The Making of Behavioral Economics.

TAKE YOUR INSTA

We live in a highly technological society. Everything we do is linked to social media – Facebook shares, Instagram posts, Snapchat appearances and LinkedIn connections. Particularly, Instagram is becoming the big player in what creative interactions respects, here are some App recommendations to take your Instagram game a step further. When it comes to photo editing, I am a true hunter: always searching for those free, cool and useful apps to download. Here are my top recommendations: VSCO Cam You may know which app this is. Is used to edition – you have loads of filters in it and you can take pictures with the app – you can adjust the lightening, the focus, the white balance and other. VSCO is my all-time favourite app: you can adjust every single detail in the photo except precise corrections. Afterlight FREE ALERT! For those who didn’t know, Afterlight was a paid app before – I really never had the courage to download it until it was free. With this app you have filters, settings adjustments and you can add dusty and light leaks on your pictures. You know that grunge Tumblr effect you always wanted to? Or the effect you have on your parents’ old pictures? Yes. With Afterlight you can have it. TIP: when you apply dusty effects make sure you use them twice – you can combine different dusty types. With light leaks, change the place they are and their colour – it will make every picture better – if you take a photography when blue shades, try to use a blueish light (always natural but yet contrasting).
