EDITOR’S LETTER
Welcome to this issue of GLOSS magazine (Issue 12). Welcome to the first issue of GLOSS for 2014. I trust you had a restful break over the holiday period and have started the year full of energy and enthusiasm. We have certainly started the year on a high note with the opening of the state-of-theart Refinish Competence Centre (RCC). The launch of the $3.8 million centre was held on 6 and 13 February at Wetherill Park, Sydney, and is the latest addition to BASF’s network of 45 RCCs worldwide. It is an absolutely stunning facility designed to help you build a more productive and profitable business by upgrading your knowledge and skills. In this issue, you can read about just what our new RCC has to offer and find out why experts such as Dr Markus Kamieth, Global Head BASF Coatings Division, think it’s the best he’s ever seen. We also look at how Glasurit and Bentley have teamed up to create a unique program to train the best painters in Australia and New Zealand. Twelve painters from six repair shops are taking part and as Glasurit’s Technical Sales Support Manager Australia and New Zealand, Ian Johnson, says: “To be in partnership with Bentley is a great endorsement for our product.” To restore a 1930 Harley Davidson to its original condition certainly is a labour of love, but that’s exactly what Adrian Newman and Carmine DeMaria have done. Read about how they did it and achieved a brilliant result – using Glasurit paint, of course! We also look at the great finish you can achieve using infrared drying with 90 LINE and the fascinating strategy behind the success of New Zealand’s Project D. I hope this year continues to be busy and successful for you.

RCC
OFFICIAL
LAUNCH
The official launch of the $3.8-million Glasurit Refinish Competence Centre (RCC) was held on 6 and 13 February at Wetherill Park, Sydney. Following the acknowledgment of the traditional landowners and a series of Indigenous dances, Ross Pilling, Chairman and Managing Director of BASF Australia and New Zealand, welcomed guests and the centre was officially opened with the cutting of a ribbon. Once inside, everyone enjoyed champagne, canapés and entertainment. It was a spectacular event where many representatives from the industry gathered to listen to speeches from BASF key personnel. But the real highlight was touring the RCC and seeing all that it had to offer. People’s reactions were overwhelmingly positive and words like “impressive”, “premium”, “cutting edge” and “stunning” flowed freely. The RCC at Wetherill Park is the latest addition to BASF’s global network of 45 refinish education centres. It features a multi-workplace concept where fast and efficient repair processes can be demonstrated, full-length glass walls to improve the viewing capabilities for training and demonstration, as well as the latest waterborne technology. “Today, refinish professionals need more than traditional training,” said Tony Wiggins, Head of Coatings, BASF Australia and New Zealand. “Our
RCC delivers commercially oriented training that drives process optimisation, so that Bodyshops can be more efficient and productive, while maintaining the highest possible repair quality and maximising their business performance.” Spanning more than 1,700 square metres, the RCC is expected to host more than 1,500 customers and industry partners, including OEMs, independent Bodyshops, distributors and insurance companies, on an annual basis. Peter Fischer, Senior Vice-President, Coatings Solutions Asia Pacific, said the RCC was well equipped to deal with any challenges that might face the refinish industry, now and into the future. “Forming the best team and innovating to help our customers to be more successful are two of BASF’s strategic principles,” Peter said. “This is exactly what we are doing with and at the RCC in Wetherill Park – providing an excellent facility that helps to sharpen customers’ competitive edge in a highly sophisticated market. We invest in first-class training infrastructure as well as a team of experts, to ensure we fully and effectively address the business requirements of our customers in the collision repair industry,” Peter said.
“Our RCC delivers commercially oriented training that drives process optimisation, so that Bodyshops can be more efficient and productive, while maintaining the highest possible repair quality and maximising their business performance.”

A WORD FROM THE EXPERTS ABOUT THE NEW RCC Ian Johnson and Peter Jones are Technical Sales Support Manager and Glasurit National Head Trainer respectively. So if anyone knows about the importance of training these two certainly do.
maintain a globally set competency level measured across five competencies. These are:
Will the RCC help address the skills shortage we’re experiencing in the refinish industry?
1. Paint modules – product theory, process application, troubleshooting, brand knowledge.
Yes. We are working very closely with Auto Skills Australia and TAFE in NSW to identify the needs of the industry and implement the Glasurit Educate program. This will not only address the need for updating the way new apprentices are educated, but also will work to identify through school careers advisers those students who are best suited to trades and mapping a career path rather than just a trade qualification.
Here they explain just what the RCC has to offer and how you, your staff and your business can benefit.
2. Efficiency modules – efficient application, blend-in technique, fast repair, spot repair and demonstration skills.
What special credentials do the RCC educators have?
3. C olour modules – colour theory, colour adjustment and colour retrieval.
All educators are put through an internal Global Technical Qualification and Development program, which requires them to reach and
4. Education – didactic skills. 5. C ertification with national accreditation in Workplace assessment & Training certificate IV.
What is the purpose of the RCC? Our intent and purpose is to be a centre of excellence for the sustainability of the Australian and New Zealand refinish industry. Through our understanding of the refinishing industry and BASF worldwide resources we will be providing educational programs, events and symposiums to benefit and advance all industry stakeholders.
GLASURIT – REFINISH COMPETENCE CENTRE | 07
How do you enrol for training at the RCC? All programs are listed on the Glasurit website, glasurit.com.au, and all bookings can be done via an online booking service. From there the Glasurit training administrator takes care of the rest. Alternatively, customers can discuss it directly with their state business managers.
How will the RCC help improve the overall standards in the industry?
What advantages can an RCC trained painttechnician expect over other training facilities?
This will be achieved through education on the latest techniques, products, equipment and efficiencies. The RCC will not only cater for current industry needs but has the flexibility to adjust based on industry demands.
All RCC programs are modularly structured, enabling a need-based approach resulting in maximum skills development for all delegates. The modular concept allows for easy update of programs as the industry evolves so it’s always relevant.
Our educational programs will develop the collision repair industry both functionally and commercially with participants from:
What are the main areas delegates will be focusing on in their training?
1. C ar manufacturers, after-market and Bodyshop operations management. 2. I nsurance company management and assessors 3. G roup repair networks. 4. P remium non-paint suppliers and distribution 5. Refinish paint technicians.
1. S ustainable development through safe, reliable and environmentally friendly solutions. 2. B est practices and efficient work processes ensuring economic gains and growth for our customers.
With car designs becoming increasingly complex, will the training provide the technical ability required to repair them? Certainly. We have global cooperation with vehicle manufacturers and implement certified paint-related educational programs for their accredited repair networks. What if you’re not in the Glasurit network? For those outside of the Glasurit Bodyshop network, contact Glasurit on 1800 010 010 to schedule some time in the RCC or to develop a specific program to fit your individual needs.

RCC SCORES TOP MARKS ON GLOBAL STAGE The opening of the Glasurit Refinish Competence Centre saw key BASF personnel from all over the world make their way to Wetherill Park, Sydney. Included in the many visitors was Markus Kamieth, President of BASF’s Coatings division, who came all the way from Germany. Markus studied Organic Chemistry and has worked for BASF in a number of senior roles in Germany and the USA. Now as the global head of BASF’s Coatings division, he is familiar with plenty of the Refinish Competence Centres all around the world and he thinks Australia’s new RCC is setting new standards for this global network. “By incorporating all of the latest technologies into the design so that we can deliver content on the most cutting edge products and procedures, we have definitely set a new standard among our global network of RCCs,” Markus said.
The high level of sophistication in the Australian RCC shows that BASF is committed to the Australian market. “For 40 years we have been active in Australia with our refinish premium solutions. BASF is committed to investing in people, facilities, advanced technology and sustainable solutions to help our customers in Australia to be more successful.” “The RCC will be instrumental in educating our customers and industry partners, with more than 1,500 per year expected to utilise the centre. The industry will demand skilled painters, and Glasurit is passionate about delivering expert training in order to develop our industry. Our company’s purpose is ‘creating chemistry for a sustainable future’ – and the connections between people being created here at the RCC is exactly what this refers to.” New trends in the refinish industry are emerging and Markus thinks these trends will also become relevant in the Australian and New Zealand market. “Improved business practices in the front

office and lean processes in the shop area are definitely two strong trends. These are being accelerated by the decline in collision rates. To flourish in the future, bodyshops will need to excel in their service quality, know their numbers, and how to affect them,” he said. When asked just what sort of bodyshops the RCC could help become more competitive, Markus had this to say: “The centre has been designed to assist all our customers in becoming more successful. It doesn’t matter if a shop has one booth or six, this facility is ready to connect technicians and managers with professional instructions and practices to improve their performance and stay competitive.”

BMW’s first purely electric model presented a new set of challenges for BASF’s coatings division. BASF and BMW have once again teamed up, this time for the i3, the BMW Group’s first model driven purely by electric power. BASF is supplying basecoats in four colours for the new i3 production line at the BMW plant in Leipzig, Germany. The i3 was launched in November 2013. With the paints, BASF is contributing to the i3’s unique design which is exceptionally clean, reduced but, at the same time, dynamic. The i3 has another special feature that also extends to the coating: the passenger compartment is made of carbon-fibre-
“We are very pleased to be a partner of the BMW Group also for this innovative model.” reinforced plastic (CFRP). “We are very pleased to be a partner of the BMW Group also for this innovative model. Driving sustainable solutions is one of BASF’s strategic principles,” said Dr Alexander Haunschild, Head of Automotive OEM Coatings Europe at BASF. The car consists of a CFRP body-in-white on which the coated plastic add-on parts are mounted. This concept means new challenges
for the coating of the add-on parts and for the associated application processes. BASF’s many years of experience in coating add-on parts has paid off. Frank Naber, BASF’s Account Manager for BMW Europe, explained: “Our laboratory teams joined forces with the BMW Group to develop a coating for the special construction of the i3. In Leipzig, we also provide technical field service on site on a daily basis.” BASF has been a supplier for the BMW plant in Leipzig since its start-up in 2005 and provides the automotive manufacturer with modern paint systems worldwide.
10 | GLASURIT – RATIO COLOUR SYSTEM
Glasurit RATIO Colour System
COLOUR EXPERTISE OF THE HIGHEST DEGREE The world’s largest colour database, perfectly coordinated tools, colour chips that are coated with original paints and – unique among suppliers – sorted into colour groups: that sums up Glasurit’s outstanding colour expertise. In practice, this makes it possible to find the perfect refinishing colour quickly and reliably. Finding the right refinishing colour is not as easy as it may seem. Ageing processes, UV radiation and other environmental influences alter the colour of a vehicle. Even colours with the same colour code aren’t absolutely identical. It makes sense that there may be deviations in colour between car models that were manufactured at different production sites. But it’s harder to understand why even the OEM coating of a new car may present a large number of nuances, especially if the paintwork appears homogeneous over the vehicle as a whole. It takes a very close look to reveal the nuances that are due in part to paint layers of different thickness on vertical and horizontal surfaces.
These fine nuances represent a major challenge to colourists and painters. It is their job to look closely and find the perfect colour for the damaged area. Glasurit’s colour tools are a great help in this respect. First example: Spectrophotometry with Glasurit RATIO Scan II The mobile spectrophotometer rationalises colour searches. Up to five vehicles can be consecutively scanned with this tool. The important thing is to thoroughly clean and polish the repair area beforehand. The device measures the colour from different angles and displays a green tick if the scan was successful.
To read out the data, Glasurit RATIO Scan II is connected to a computer and the Glasurit Profit Manager Bodyshop program is opened. As soon as the job order has been created and the manufacturer entered, the program determines the best colour matches. To do this, it searches the databases of vehicle manufacturers, the Glasurit colour tools and the customer service formulas. A few minutes later, it displays the five best solutions. Red, yellow, green – go! A traffic light system shows the quality of the hits. Green means: this is a perfect match. To be on the safe side, though, it’s always
GLASURIT – RATIO COLOUR SYSTEM | 11
best to perform a spray-out, because identical colours may look different, depending on the painter’s ‘signature.’ A yellow hit is also good to work with. First, it is advisable in this case to check the result using a colour chip. The system displays a reference code that can be used to determine which colour chip from the Glasurit Colour Profi System (CPS) matches the hit. If the colour is not a perfect match, the system can correct the mixing formula automatically. For safety’s sake, a spray-out should be performed using this corrected mixing formula. Depending on the damaged area and colour, even a ‘red’ hit may be a good match. It’s best to check the colour using the corresponding CPS chip. If the colour doesn’t match, the scan must be repeated at another spot near the damaged area, using Glasurit RATIO Scan II. Corrected mixing formulas can be stored in a database using Glasurit Profit Manager and can
be retrieved whenever they are needed. Second example: Colour retrieval with the colour code and Glasurit Colour Online Thanks to Glasurit’s special tools, efficient colour retrieval is also possible without a spectrophotometer. In most cases, the vehicle manufacturer’s colour code offers initial guidance. Painters and colourists can use the colour code to search the world’s largest colour database, Glasurit Colour Online. The internet colour database provides detailed information on more than 200,000 mixing formulas for the original colours of all automobile manufacturers – around the globe and around the clock, from PCs or using a smart phone app. Just one click on the displayed OEM colour takes you to the mixing formula and the reference code for the corresponding
CPS colour chip. The CPS chips are manufactured with the greatest care, and are coated with original paint according to the relevant mixing formula. If the colour is a perfect match for the area surrounding the repair area, there is not really any more need for spray-outs. Third example: Colour retrieval with Colour Online Not all vehicle manufacturers state a colour code. But Glasurit Colour Online and the CPS colour chips still lead you quickly and reliably to the right colour. If you enter the vehicle manufacturer, model, year and colour bias in the Colour Online search mask, it comes up with a solution or several solutions with the corresponding CPS reference codes. These solutions can then be directly compared on the surface of the vehicle using the CPS chips.
12 | GLASURIT – RATIO COLOUR SYSTEM
Glasurit is the only supplier to have sorted the chips into colour groups rather than assigning them to vehicle manufacturers. The advantage: if the proposed colour does not appear ideal, there are various colour chips in the colour block that enable you to immediately find a suitable alternative. Here, too, it is advisable to mix a spray-out to be on the safe side. Fourth example: Colour retrieval with the Glasurit Colour Profi System Colour retrieval with Glasurit also works without a colour code or electronic devices – with the Glasurit Colour Profi System. The colour chip system is the core element of Glasurit’s colour tools. Even if the painter or colourist has no information other than the paintwork on the vehicle being refinished, he can determine the right colour in a matter of minutes. What makes CPS so unbeatably fast? Glasurit is the only supplier to have sorted thousands of automobile colours into colour groups on handy colour blocks. Being able to access the right colour group provides so many alternatives that the suitable shade is quickly found. If the vehicle to be refinished still has its original paintwork, the CPS reference list may also help, since it lists all colours from all manufacturers and models with the corresponding CPS reference codes. With this solution and the respective CPS colour block, you can proceed as in example 3.
TIPS FOR EFFICIENT COLOUR RETRIEVAL • T horoughly clean and polish the repair area! • Calibrate Glasurit RATIO Scan II once a day. • Regularly insert the updates for the Glasurit Colour Profi System.
For colourists who want to formulate their own colour or adjust a colour shade, Glasurit has developed a special colour adjustment chart. The colours are stuck onto the poster as spray-outs with original paint, and help to formulate the suitable shade quickly and easily. To avoid any unpleasant surprises, it’s still best to stick to the mixing formula! Whether Glasurit RATIO Scan II, Colour Online, Colour Profi System, reference list or colour adjustment chart – with its experience based on 125 years of paint history, Glasurit offers the right answer to every question at every Bodyshop.
GLASURIT – INFRARED TECHNOLOGY | 13
FINISH FASTER WITH INFRARED TECHNOLOGY AND GLASURIT
Gas fired infrared technology can cut your drying time by more than 70%*, giving you a real competitive edge in the marketplace. It’s no wonder that more and more Bodyshops are looking at gas fired infrared drying technology for their businesses. As well as making the whole repair process faster, it saves you money by giving you up to 90%* saving in gas consumption. Ideal heating temperatures are reached faster and once they are reached, there are no fluctuations so you get more effective drying. You also enjoy up to 50%* less paint cycle time and have no moisture problems. What’s more, it is environmentally friendly and safe to use. Naturally, Glasurit products can all be
successfully dried and cured using infrared technology to give you the brilliant finish you expect from Glasurit. There is no doubt that the use of infrared technology can maximise productivity with Glasurit’s 90 LINE – the number 1 waterborne paint in the world. Here’s why. Infrared technology is used immediately after paint application and the intense heat generated reduces drying time and accelerates curing of the paint. Less energy is required because heat is only generated where it is needed. The handling and operation of infrared equipment is very straightforward. The machine is placed in position and the required drying time is set. At
the end of the drying process, the machine then switches off automatically. Infrared heaters have been specially developed for the vehicle refinishing sector that adapt perfectly to the shape of the area being dried. With gas fired infrared drying technology, investment costs are also lower and less equipment is required. Apart from the available imported Gas-Infrared equipment Lowbake Australia has locally developed and are now producing their own Gas-IR equipment especially designed for Australian conditions. So if you’re looking for a faster, more cost effective way to achieve a stunning Glasurit finish on your vehicles, it could well be worth your while talking to Lowbake on (03) 9794 8533. *efficiency savings provided by Lowbake

NEW SKILLS
FOR A NEW WORLD “WorldSkills is a fantastic event to showcase the skills and talent coming up in our next generation,” says judge and National Auto Collision Alliance chairman Mark Brady.
GLASURIT – WORLDSKILLS AUSTRALIA COMPETITION | 15
Rounds of the WorldSkills Australia regional competition for paint and panel students were held at the Sir Jack Brabham Automotive Centre of Excellence in Brisbane last September.
The importance of safety was not lost on these young painters. As Mr Dickson noted: “Their knowledge of all the safety aspects is commendable. It seems to be second nature for this new generation.”
WORLDSKILLS MAKES A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE
The judges for the vehicle painting category, Jason Dickens and Michael Stevenson, were very impressed with what they saw and had nothing but praise for the competitors.
David and Tracy Hackett’s daughter Maigan was a keen competitor and they were there to give her all the support they could. “It’s been her desire to get into this industry for five years and it’s great to see her in the competition,” Mr Hackett said.
WorldSkills Australia (WSA) is a national organisation that has been involved in the development, recognition and promotion of excellence in vocational skills since 1981.
“These young guys and girls are showing great potential,” Mr Stevenson said. “Their attention to detail is very high and very professional.”
In the end, Maigan came second in the vehicle painting category, which was a great effort and a very proud moment for her parents. Maigan works in a Glasurit Bodyshop using 90 LINE and wasn’t the only one to do well from such a shop. Nicholas Lyness won the vehicle painting category while Albert Doyle-Smith won the auto body repair category; both are from Glasurit Bodyshops. Mark Brady was excited about the event and confident about what the future holds. “It is important to show the quality of the technical skills that we have for the future and this place is the best place to hold the competition,” Mr Brady said.
WSA is Australia’s premier showcase of youth skill and trade excellence. Its mission is to actively engage in the development of policy and the practice of skills excellence through competitions, international benchmarking and applied research. Through a program of competitions, aligned to National Training Packages, WSA works to ensure that today’s young people have the skills and abilities to compete within a rapidly changing marketplace. WSA aims to encourage Australians to celebrate vocational education and training and to create an understanding that to learn a skill and to choose a skill-based career is one of the most rewarding and worthwhile decisions a young person can make. BIKE COMES BACK TO LIFE
GLASURIT – 1930 HARLEY DAVIDSON RESTORATION | 17
When Adrian Newman wanted to restore his 1930 Harley Davidson V Series Solo, a panel beater/ painter friend of his advised him that Glasurit paint would give him the best possible finish. So he contacted Glasurit, who recommended Carmine DeMaria from CAD Custom without hesitation. The team at Glasurit was familiar with Carmine’s work and knew he had the skills, dedication and passion for such a job. As Adrian said,”Carmine did an excellent job of the paintwork. The finish is off the gun, a mirror finish.” Painting the bike was a painstaking process, which took place over a two-year period. As Adrian restored each part, Carmine painted it to ensure it didn’t rust before reassembly. The primary chain case was the most damaged tinwork on the bike but Carmine’s panel beater put his skills to work to achieve a superb results. Both tanks also proved very time consuming because clear coat for each tank had to be built up to form a smooth surface over the livery, Harley Davidson transfer and the pin striping.
When Adrian purchased the 1930 Harley it was in very poor condition and had been hand painted black. When stripping the paint they discovered the bike had been painted white, then blue, with the original colour being maroon. The inside surface of the toolbox lid still had the original colour, so Carmine polished the surface and matched the colour.
“The majority of our work is done using Glasurit. It is a fantastic product that delivers a quality finish.” The complete restoration gave both Carmine and Adrian a great sense of achievement and enormous satisfaction. “It is a job that we are proud of and very satisfied with. At CAD Custom we aim to do high end work and are very happy with what comes out of our workshop,” Carmine said.
“I have restored a 1937 M100 Panther motorcycle, but not to the detail and standard of this bike,” Adrian added. Since its completion the bike has gone on to win the 2013 Australian International Concourse d’Elegance Award for PreWar motorcycles (Class M1) plus the 110 years of Harley Davidson Award. Carmine and Adrian brought their families to the Motorclassica to see the bike on display and receiving both awards was a great moment for everyone involved. Carmine doesn’t just use Glasurit paint for special projects such as the restoration of the 1930 Harley Davidson. “The majority of our work is done using Glasurit. It is a fantastic product that delivers a quality finish,” Carmine said. Adrian has recently purchased a totally unrestored 1914 Model 10F Harley Davidson, so let’s hope he and Carmine can get together and create another winner.
Clockwise from bottom right: Almost 80 years later, the Harley looks like it just rolled off the production line; Adrian could not be happier with the paintwork; Winning the 2013 RACV Motorclassica Harley-Davidson award.

BENTLEY MOVES UP A GEAR DOWNUNDER
Glasurit’s Technical Sales Support Manager, Australia and New Zealand, Ian Johnson said: “To be in partnership with Bentley is a great endorsement for our product...”
GLASURIT – BENTLEY TRAINING | 19
Glasurit and Bentley have teamed up to create a new program to educate the best painters in Australia and New Zealand. As you can imagine, when Bentley wants its vehicles painted they want the job done by trained professionals using the very best paint. That’s why Glasurit and Bentley have worked hard to develop a partnership that trains painters to the exceptionally high standard needed to produce a warranted OEM repair and gain accreditation by Bentley. Developed in Germany, this global program has three levels of training and is the first of its kind to involve participants from both Australia and New Zealand. For the current training program, 12 painters from six repair shops are taking part. Not surprisingly, the people at Bentley are very selective about just who takes part because it is this training that decides who will achieve accreditation. Glasurit and Bentley personnel certainly appreciate how important this new Bentley approved network is for the Asia-Pacific region. To this end Glasurit have arranged for the global head trainer to come out from Germany to share his knowledge and expertise with participants. Not only that, he will be able to update and inform local trainers of the latest developments in product, application and technique. This will ensure the Australian and New Zealand automotive refinish industry is kept up to date with best practices. Left: A Bentley Continental GTC W12 Convertible looks at home in the RCC foyer. Below: A select few will go on to receive Bentley accreditation after undertaking practical training under the guidance of Peter Jones, Glasurit National Head Trainer, ANZ.
When you are talking about vehicles that can cost in excess of $350,000, the owners obviously want complete confidence in the Bodyshop they are dealing with. Which is where Bentley accreditation plays a vital role and why it is not achieved easily. As Bentley states on its website: “Before becoming accredited each Bodyshop must demonstrate that they meet our rigorous standards. These ensure that each facility has the appropriate, serviced and calibrated, repair equipment and technicians who are trained and capable of operating it. All shops are tested annually to ensure that they meet the Bentley standards.” With its rich heritage of 90 years as a leading British marque, Bentley definitely has a reputation to uphold. The fact that it uses Glasurit in the factory and recommends it for the refinishing of repairs speaks volumes for the paint’s quality, performance and reliability. Glasurit’s Technical Sales Support Manager, Australia and New Zealand, Ian Johnson said: “To be in partnership with Bentley is a great endorsement for our product. The training program is sure to have huge benefits and create a brand new network of highly skilled, sought after professionals. Training and development really is the way to get ahead.”
With their rich heritage of 90 years as a leading British marque, Bentley definitely has a reputation to uphold.
20 | GLASURIT – ABS GROUP MEETING
A MEETING WITH PLENTY OF MEAT The latest New Zealand Advanced Bodyshop Solutions Group Meeting was a lively affair full of vigorous discussion, strong ideas and meaty topics. Held late last year, Glasurit through Advanced Bodyshop Solutions (ABS) in New Zealand had its second meeting for 2013 at Abbeville Estate for Automotive Refinish Technology (A.R.T.) and customers from their distribution network. ABS Consultant Alan Shotton addressed a crowd of 30 delegates during the four-hour meeting, instigating a number of discussions and some robust debate. A topic of great interest was the recently released Australian Request for Proposal (RFP)
There was a real energy in the room at the end of the meeting with everyone feeling inspired. by Insurance Australia Group (IAG). Here, Alan explained in detail just what an RFP was and helped delegates with any questions or concerns they had. Alan and the delegates were well aware of how Key Performance Indicators help monitor the performance of a Bodyshop and ultimately improve profit. So not surprisingly, this topic received an enormous amount of attention. Each point was analysed and debated by the group with an emphasis on finance and production.
The mood was upbeat and positive, with many innovative and original ideas put forward. There was a real energy in the room at the end of the meeting with everyone feeling inspired, invigorated and ready to make the most of all they had learned. It may have only been four hours but all delegates were genuinely impressed with how much they got through and how much value Advanced Bodyshop Solutions can add to the New Zealand refinish industry. To follow was a dinner for attendees, and what the next Advanced Bodyshop Solutions Group Meeting had in store was the main topic of conversation.
GLASURIT – PROJECT D | 21
PROJECT D GETS AN A+ RESULT Nothing like Project D has ever occurred before in the New Zealand refinishing industry. It took months of planning and hard work, but the results were certainly worth the effort. The whole purpose behind Project D was to change the distribution of Glasurit and Salcomix. It was a matter of thinking creatively, moving quickly and taking a fresh approach to the New Zealand market. David and Richard Tout from well-known distributor Ultra Paints had long admired the qualities of Glasurit, especially 90 LINE, and in 2012 looked at the feasibility of distributing the product to their customers. The issue was how do you change paint brands but keep all your customers? David and Richard were confident that 90 LINE was just what their customers were looking for. All their customers needed was an easy changeover and support from the experts at Ultra Paints, Glasurit and BASF – which is exactly what they got.
This was a real team effort where technical representatives, technical sales support managers and customer service staff from New Zealand, Australia and as far away as The Netherlands combined their skills for a smooth, trouble-free transition.
As a result, you can see a lot more Glasurit sales vans around town.
In just one week, every customer was spoken to and most gave the go-ahead to change. In the next three to four weeks, the majority of Bodyshops had their installations completed and were ready for action.
As a result, you can see a lot more Glasurit sales vans around town. It’s not only Glasurit paint that has been warmly received by David and Richard’s customers, either. So have all the state-of-the-art equipment and services on offer such as ColourONLINE, VisionPLUS and Advanced Bodyshop Solutions, which help create a more productive and profitable business. With such a dramatic increase in demand, it has been necessary for Automotive Refinish Technology (A.R.T.) to increase its warehousing. This has been done to not only satisfy demand but in expectation of future growth. The success of Project D is unprecedented and something we are not likely to see again soon. It was certainly a big idea and when you combine that with commitment and teamwork, anything really is possible.
Below: Evans European Paint and Panel are just one of the many recognised Bodyshops that changed over to Glasurit during Project D.

EFFICIENT COLOUR TOOLS IN A VIDEO The perfect refinishing colour is essential for successful refinishing. But how to find this colour fast, simply and safely? Glasurit’s new application video “Colour competence” provides the answer to this question. The video presents Glasurit’s efficient colour tools and shows the individual steps to achieving the perfect refinishing colour. Three possible cases are shown under practical conditions in the video: colour identification with the Glasurit RATIO Scan II spectrophotometer, colour retrieval with the colour code and the Glasurit Colour Online
database, and finally, colour retrieval when the colour has to be determined without the colour code and the spectrophotometer. Painters, colourists and anyone else who is interested in finding out about Glasurit’s efficient colour tools can find the video on the internet on Glasurit’s YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/ Glasuritcom/videos or by clicking the box below.

Mark Glover is the Customer Service / Coatings Refinish Academy / Global Trainer for BASF Coatings. It is certainly an impressive title and while he was in Australia he did some equally impressive work at the new Glasurit Refinish Competence Centre (RCC). Mark began work as a painter in 1985 and after this solid grounding joined BASF Glasurit in the UK in 1998 as a Technical Sales Representative. He was then promoted to National Head Trainer for the UK in 2005 before moving to the Global Customer Service Team in Münster Germany in 2010 as Global Trainer. While in Australia, Mark concentrated his efforts on train-the-trainer sessions and accredited Bentley paint training. He was very impressed with the new RCC and believes it will remain an invaluable resource well into the future. “The technical training this RCC has to offer can never be replaced. However, I could imagine that the use of social media, videos, individual e-learning and the like could well become more and more popular,” he said. For Mark, training is about giving participants the skills, knowledge and acumen needed to run a successful, sustainable business. “Our training concept is a not just about teaching people how to paint but how to build a better business,” he said.

the right change can be a stressful challenge without guidance, we provide quality support to our customer base, I’d like to think that my role creates a greater depth of support than ever offered before, the number of Glasurit users who have already benefitted stands testimony to the quality and effectiveness of our offer. Can you provide an overview of your background in the business? My career began as an apprentice in a Panel Shop, and progressed to working directly for the companies providing the insurances. With about 8 years’ experience working purely with motor vehicle and motor trade insurances, and a further 6 years as a broker handling commercial and fleet insurances, I believe I am in a great position to support the business moving forward. Why did you decide on a career in this industry? I have always had a keen interest in cars and making them look good, so the automotive industry was a great place to start. I also enjoy talking to people and developing relationships, and this role affords me the opportunity to do both at the same time.
