O we have a surprise for you this week… Three cast members from The Bold And The Beautiful, Karla Mosley, the gorgeous Jacob Young and Heather Tom, spent a morning with us to celebrate their big 3-0 birthday! And they were the nicest people you could ever wish to meet. We did a photo shoot with them, and they chatted exclusively to our journo Robert – turn to pages 16 to19 and 79 to see what they had to say. A few weeks back I mentioned how some of our favourite cartoons have been around for over 80 years, and it got me thinking (yes I do that from time to time!) – there are so many products that have become such a part of our lives, it’s hard to think there ever was a time without them! So we decided to wander through a bit of local history to see just when some of our favourite brands popped up. Can you believe that two of our very own brands at Caxton house, Rooi Rose and Farmers Weekly, have been on the market since 1942 and 1911 respectively! That’s a hell of an achievement. Then we get brands like Mrs Balls Chutney, which has been around since 1852! Turn to pages 38 and 39 to see more celebrated brands that have never let us down. andreac@caxton.co.za Enjoy! Until next week.

SOME of the more spectacular events of the week.
Remember, Remember
ANOTHER November 5 has come and gone, but over 400 years after the apparent usurper Guy Fawkes’ execution protest groups around the world have not forgotten. The Million Man March is by no means a contemporary Gunpowder Plot – it has, however, attracted a large portion of the activist group (Fawkes mask and all) to march upon Trafalgar Square in London to protest against the government and capitalism in what was once called Bonfire Night.
Not The Milk Of The Poppy
Welcome To The Apple Kraal
ROSES are red, violets are blue, our wallets are full, let’s stand in a queue! Germany’s economy must surely find itself in peachy territory as hundreds lined up to get their ever-impatient paws on Apple’s new iPhone X. The age of instant satisfaction is a solemn one if Earth’s beloved denizens can’t wait to replace something they already have with something effectively the same. To put things in perspective, the X costs and eye-watering R23 000; and let’s not beat around the bush: most people will use it for calling, WhatsApp, a video conference here and there, but mostly for an unhealthy addiction to the highly popular candy Crush – so pretty much exactly what their old phones were used for.
AFGHAN opium, regrettably, is one of the most soughtafter narcotics in the world. Its source lies bang in the middle of the Golden Crescent and is the foremost producer and exporter of heroin in the world. The economic clime can take a large portion of the blame, but it is rather relieving to see that viable (and legal) alternatives are prevalent. Around 5 000 people have been employed to cultivate the valuable spice saffron in the Karukh district. Forty percent of said workers are women and it is seen as a practical alternative to poppy cultivation.
Rejoice, Friends!
THE Dutch clowning organisation Africlowns once more made their yearly trek to our shores to entertain those who are marginalised. Each year the Africlowns travel our country to put shows on for those who are mentally and physically disabled. Their voyage, for the most part, sees them visiting schools and community centres in townships as a means to put smiles one the faces of those who can’t necessarily take care of themselves.

Mr And Mrs Hemsworth?
BEACH BUM, that is, which is the name of Matthew McConaughey’s upcoming film – and boy, does the man take his role seriously. The 47-year-old actor was seen kinda eww-ing up Miami Beach with a set of rather scraggly blond locks while filming scenes for the movie; kudos to the make-up department – it takes a lot of talent to make Mr McConaughey even a little icky-looking. The film is about a defiant stoner, Moondog, who lives by his own rules. Clearly those rules have nothing to do with personal appearance.
“GASP! Do our eyes deceive us? Rings? On those fingers? Eeeek!” Such must have been some of the comments made when these pictures of Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth, spotted on baecation on Tybee Island, made the rounds. Unfortunately, some bubbles must be burst. While they do looked as loved-up as ever, and while this is the location where The Last Song was shot – the film that first brought them together (how romantic!) – and while they are indeed wearing bands on those fingers...the truth is that GO TO FOR MORE 24/7 CELEB GOSSIP the rings are actually just the same promise rings they’ve been .ZA CO NE. OCTOBER 31, 2017 – Hollyween, California. Stranger things are-a-comin’!
HEIDI KLUM
PICS: ORION / GREATSTOC K / SOCIAL MEDIA
SHE is the undisputed Queen of Scream. For years on end now the German model made mincemeat and pumpkin pie of any would-be rival. She’s gone all out this year as Michael Jackson’s werewolf in the Thriller music video, but we’re afraid that she has been dethroned in 2017.
It Gets Weird On BY ROBERT CLUNIE
A
CHOKING haze of fog rapidly barrels down the famous Hollywood sign. Thick banks of mist settle betwixt the twin peaks of Runyon Canyon and the Capitol Records building. Supernatural squeals soon penetrate the frozen, fickle air. All goes quiet once more but for a horde of walking dead shuffling about the Walk of Fame. There’s nothing to fear but fear itself. Welcome to the night gallery. Welcome to the twilight zone. Scared yet? Yeah, it was a long shot – we didn’t think so. It was that time of year, however, when residents of Tinseltown hardly spared any expense on their what-to-wears. There’s a certain former supermodel who, year after year, oft leaves the chasing pack in a wake of spooky dust come competition time. The year 2017 coughed up a mass of quality costumes and a few that hardly left anything to the imagination. Here is our pick for this year’s best dressed.

JESSICA ALBA
A HEAVILY pregnant Alba could not have picked a better costume other than preggy teen movie character Juno MacGuff. Smart is what smart does. Hubby Cash Warren glowed in neon colours as Super Mario’s Luigi.
JENNA DEWAN AND CHANNING TATUM
THEY are pandering for points, but they are doing it in style. Their renditions of Jack and Sally from The Nightmare Before Christmas are sure fire winners this is Halloween, and Channing makes for one buff Mr Skellington!

AMBER ROSE AND SEBASTIAN
CHUCKY from Child’s Play is terrifying enough as is – now he’s even more lifelike! Amber herself can be chuffed with her Tiffany Valentine outfit. We hope she slept with one eye open that night.
JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE AND JESSICA BIEL
GWYNETH PALTROW
ADORBS! The Timberlake-Biel family were just too sweet as Buzz, Jessie and a mini Sheriff Woody
ZOË KRAVITZ
ZOË broke the cardinal rule of Fight Club, but boy, did she do so in style. Marla Singer was an enthralling sideshow in the rather mind-boggling film; enigmatic, a little scruffy and a truck load of manic. Kravitz could easily have stood in as a stuntdouble.
n Hollyween
KHLOÉ KARDASHIAN AND TRISTAN THOMPSON
NO! She’s not as boring as one might think. She’s rather clever, actually. Old Gwynnie made use of an old movie prop, we assume, and it’s nothing more than a box. What’s in the box? Ask Brad Pitt. Remember the 1995 movie, Se7ven? Well, at one point her character’s decapitated head ended up in said box. Full marks!
WHERE are your drago… uhm, where is your baby? There’s a little Conan and a tinged of Xena woven in here, but we’ll give Khal Drogo and Daenerys Targaryen a healthy pass-mark here. Tristan, buddy, a real beard will do better next time.
LADY GAGA
YUP, no surprise here – in fact it was if she was Born This Way. Edward Scissorhands was brought perfectly back to life by the singer.
NEIL PATRICK HARRIS AND DAVID BURTKA
SORRY, Heidi, but we think NPH and fam pips you for best dressed this year. The effort put into this get-up is unrivalled! Neil clearly harnessed the romantic sentiment people harbour for the circus and freak shows of yesteryear, with a little bit of IT thrown in, too – and a bearded toddler… What’s not to like?

OUR weekly roundup of all the things that set the online community #LOLing, #crying, #caring and #sharing. BY MARK WASSERMAN
JZ & Barbra Streisand…
HAVE you heard of the Barbra Streisand Effect? Wikipedia describes it as ‘the phenomenon whereby an attempt to hide, remove, or censor a piece of information has the unintended consequence of publicising the information more widely, usually facilitated by the Internet’. And if there is anything that is a local example of that effect, it’s surely the recent drama surrounding the publishing and sale of seasoned journalist Jacques Pauw’s new book. Pauw is the latest to face the ire of government machinery for writing an explosive book, The President’s Keepers, in which he makes many damning allegations against President Jacob Zuma. The problem is, in demanding the book be removed from the shelves and threatening legal action against the book’s author and publishers, the powers that be have made sure that within a matter of days nearly all printed copies had flown off the shelves of stockists nationwide, and the issue has been trending for days. In fact, social media went berserk when government seemingly interjected in the matter, and instantly PDF copies of the manuscript started doing the rounds in the wake of the sell-out of the hard copy. We know this is definitely going to be a story that is going to play out for weeks – if not months – possibly in court, but most certainly on social media. So we know what’s going to be trending for a while, here. But perhaps the Barbra Streisand Effect needs a more local name. We’re thinking something along the lines of ‘The Baba ka Duduzane Effect’?

Oh, Kimmy, Kimmy, Kimmy...
KIM KARDASHIAN thought it would be an great Halloween idea to dress up as different ‘icons’ this year, including the late Aaliyah, and it turns out it wasn’t. When she tried to defend her choice of dressing as a black celebrity, she angered even more people. And in true Hollywood fashion, Kim’s response did little more than pour a tankerful of fuel onto the flames, claiming that her family is ‘colourblind’ on her app. She wrote: “Aaliyah was such an amazing singer and she will forever be a music legend. I saw online that some people thought my costume was in poor taste and I am truly sorry if that offended anyone. When I was creating the costume, I wasn’t dressing up as a race or culture but rather as a woman whom I will always admire. We don’t see colour in my home.” Comments came in thick and fast against the KUWTK star. “I wasn’t offended by the costume. I’m offended by the statement, ‘We don’t see colour in our home.’ Bish, you’re half Armenian and your husband is black. Those kids are more coloured than white. You better explain that to them before they learn it on the streets,” read one of the harshest ones. A huge part of us believes the Kardashian PR team knew what it was doing when it okayed her choice (and we know contractually they need to okay ALL her choices), but then again, this is Kim we’re talking about, so will we ever REALLY know?

But Will He Win An Oscar?
THE South African public has reacted with mixed emotions to news of the upcoming biopic, Oscar Pistorius: Blade Runner Killer, about the life of Paralympian Oscar Pistorius and the murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. While we’re not sure what the eventual verdict on the film will be, we do know a few things about the hottie who plays Oscar. •Andreas Damm attended the all-boys boarding school Michaelhouse in KwaZulu-Natal. •He moved to the US in 2005 to further his studies. •He graduated from The New School for Drama M.F.A. acting programme in May 2012. •He also majored in International Relations (Hon) Cum Laude from the University of Pennsylvania. •He holds dual German and South African nationalities. •Andreas is fluent in German, Spanish, and English. •He is proficient in the traditional South African Gumboot Dance, created by South African gold miners. •Andreas loves the outdoors and adventure sports. •He has had roles in shows like Person Of Interest (2011), Elementary (2012) and Off The Rails (2017).

We’re Always On The Wash Out For Stars
GUESS who we spotted out and about in Fourways doing the most everyday of activities: getting their car washed? None other than one half of DJ duo Twins On Deck Ryan Rigney, and his soaploving sidekick, Kaizer Chiefs player Keagan Buchanan. Eagle-eyed people magazine staffer Courtney Moore didn’t miss the opportunity to walk up to the two and snap a couple of pics with them. And by all accounts, they’re both wonderful guys who were more than happy to oblige. Thanks, boys. We love rubbing shoulders with stars who are so down-to-earth and genuine!

Soccer’s Loss; Our Gain
WHEN an injury ended Kamil Nicalek’s soccer dreams, he decided to pursue a new dream: becoming a fitness model. And that dream, as you can tell, has come true, and we couldn’t be more happy for ourselves, and less concerned about the sport, because, well, LOOK! In an interview with Bodybuilding.com, Kamil said, “I got started after two knee surgeries and giving up my dream of becoming a pro. soccer player. I used the gym to excel in what was my second dream, which was to get in the best shape of my life and be featured in a fitness magazine. Since then working out and eating healthy has opened so many doors for me that I can’t tell you how it has paid off. Not only have I been featured in fitness magazines, but in top fashion magazines around the world, too, which I never thought would really happen... Through hard work and dedication I did it!” Yes, you did, Kamil. And we thank you for that!

Return Of The Gladi-Eater?
KIWI Hollywood star Russell Crowe had us looking twice when he was seen out and about looking very different from his Gladiator days while shooting his latest movie, an adaptation of the memoir Boy Erased: A Memoir Of Identity, Faith, And Family by Garrard Conley. He plays the Baptist father to a gay son whom he and his wife (played by Nicole Kidman) force into conversion therapy. Gladiator Clearly Russell takes the role seriously, as reportedly the weight he gained is specifically for the movie – and not a result of uncontrollable midnight binges of beer and doughnuts (phew, well that’s a relief). In fact, he’s known for gaining and losing weight previously for film roles. He piled on the kilos for The Nice Guys, in which he starred alongside, Ryan Gosling, because he said he wanted to be ‘the physical juxtaposition of Ryan’. He went up to a chunky 121.6kg at the time, 24 of which he lost after that movie. Now he looks to be even weightier than that! Hopefully all this rollercoaster losing and gaining is not wreaking havoc on his health.

HOLLYWOOD I DIVORCE BY EL BROIDE
Shockers! Last December Kim had to testify under oath about her husband’s drug use and things haven’t got better. “They recently had a blowout fight about him spending all his time in the recording studio,” says the source. “There are days she doesn’t even see him, and he’s not out of the country or even the state – he’s in LA!” Kanye did take Kim on a romantic holiday to the Amangiri resort in Canyon Point, Utah, but even that didn’t go according to plan. “It was a lovely gesture [but] the serenity and beauty of the landscape in Utah appeals to Kanye. Kim was bored out of her mind.” Kim was also obsessing over hearing news about their unborn child, which clouded what was supposed to be a weekend to reconnect. “The cellphone reception was abysmal, which created even more tension because she was afraid their surrogate might have an issue with the baby, and she wouldn’t know.” So despite the impending arrival of her new child, Kim is ready to pull the plug on the marriage. “Kim’s talked to divorce attorneys in the past,” admits the source. “[But] Kanye’s begged her for a second chance. She agreed and then she got pregnant with Saint. And the second time she wanted to leave him, his mental state was the issue, so she stayed. But now there’s no excuse.” The insider adds, “Kim knows her mom Kris and sister Kourtney will be there to help her pick up the pieces when Kanye is gone. Yes, it will be chaotic and exhausting, but she can afford to hire nannies and night nurses, so it’s not completely overwhelming.”

Kim & Kanye
KIM and Kanye seem to have everything under control. They’re the proud parents of two beautiful children and they’re expecting their third child via surrogacy in just a few weeks. However, it seems that even this happy time won’t be able to save their crumbling marriage. Kim is reportedly over Kanye’s erratic behaviour and is ready to start a life without him. “Kim will be filing for divorce from Kanye,” an insider claims. “It’s officially over. She is ready to move on with her life.” Kim stuck by her husband after his infamous breakdown in 2016, but Kanye continues to be paranoid. “Kanye thinks he’s being spied on. He’ll go days without talking to her. He’s hot and he’s cold. Even their sex life isn’t what it used to be.”

THESE stars are calling it quits – and it’s taken us all by surprise!
N this day and age, divorce is something that has, unfortunately, become a norm – especially in Hollywood. Over the years we’ve seen some of our favourite couples call it quits, and while some are expected, there are a few which totally shock us. Although things may seem great on the outside, behind closed doors it’s a completely different scenario (we’re looking at you, Brad and Angie!). This seems to be the case with a handful of stars at the moment and it’s unlikely that their marriages will survive.
Coleen & Wayne
WAYNE ROONEY was recently charged with drunk driving after he was pulled over and breathalysed when taking Laura Simpson home after a night on the town – a woman who isn’t his wife! The star has since been sentenced with 100 hours of community service, but doesn’t get off as lightly with his wife Coleen, who is ready to pull the plug on the marriage. Coleen, who is pregnant with the soccer player’s fourth child, has been spotted without her wedding ring. The childhood sweethearts met when they were just 12 years old, but now Coleen has had enough of Wayne’s reported cheating ways and reckless behaviour. “Coleen wants to protect her family and is embarrassed by Wayne’s shady behaviour,” a source says. “She’s bringing another child into the world and her children have become her main priority.” The couple’s R1.2-billion fortune is likely to be split in half, with Wayne paying his way through child support. Coleen loves him but has had enough. She wants to set a good example to her children – even if it means leaving the man she loves.

OTHER STARS WHO’VE CALLED IT QUITS
END OF THE WEEKND BY ROBERT CLUNIE
IF it’s meant to be, it’s meant to Bieber.
Trevor Gumbi LOCAL comedian
THEY’VE been together for 18 years, during which they’ve seen the birth of four beautiful children; but the older they get, the more Victoria and David Beckham have realised that they have nothing in common. Their marriage has been rocked by multiple cheating scandals, and Posh and Becks have always come out tops, but while Victoria has reason to complain, given the grief and embarrassment her husband’s caused her, it’s David who is pulling the plug! David has been hanging out with British socialite Lady Mary Charteris recently and Victoria wasn’t happy. “They got into a massive blow-up. She accused him of humiliating her and demanded the absolute truth, plus an explanation as to why he thinks it’s okay to be cavorting with another woman – platonic or not,” a source says. “But David got very defensive and ended up storming out of the house in the middle of the exchange. He said he needed space to cool down and for Victoria to get off his back.” Another source adds that David is going through a mid-life crisis of sorts and is pulling away from Victoria. “He’s constantly out with wingmen like Dave Gardner who are leading him into highly tempting environments,” the source explains. “David’s been pulling away from Victoria for a long time now. Not just with the late-night outings, but his OCD gym sessions and generally juvenile and bachelorlike behaviour. It’s been a slow spiral since his soccer career ended. Sure, he has his eye on the business side of sports management, but it’s taking a while to get off the ground and he lacks focus these days.” David is adamant that he wants to enjoy this phase of his life. He wants to go out and party – even if it means that his marriage crumbles. Victoria is desperate to save her marriage but even she is ready to throw in the towel. “It’s not like she hasn’t tried for years. In many ways she’s had the patience of a saint. But right now, it seems like the only thing that can save their marriage is an actual miracle.”

Posh & Becks
Trevor Gumbi has called off his marriage to his ex-wife Lucille, and instead of allowing speculation to thrive, he’s sharing his story in his new one-man show The Divorce Tour. “Instead of letting this divorce or my failed romantic relationship with my wife become tabloid fodder, I’d much rather tell our story on our terms instead of have speculation,” he says. “Also, it’s about letting people know that it’s not all doom and gloom and it actually is a love story. I like to say it’s better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all. So there is the story of our journey of love. I also let people know the signs like don’t do certain things.”
Tamar Braxton THE singer
announced though a representative that she has decided to end her marriage to Vincent Herbert after almost nine years. “At this time we can confirm Ms Braxton has made an extremely difficult decision and has filed for divorce from Vincent Herbert,” her representative said. “Their son Logan and his wellbeing during this extremely unfortunate process is most important. We ask that everyone respects her privacy during this incredibly difficult time. She appreciates everyone’s love and prayers.”
Mel & Zwai Bala WE were shocked to hear that local couple
Melanie and Zwai Bala were separating but it seems, after three reported cheating scandals, Mel knew a leopard couldn’t change its spots and called it quits on their marriage. However, the now-ex-couple is adamant about raising their kids together. “We remain committed to jointly raising our amazing children in a happy and healthy environment and will continue to be great friends,” they said in a statement.

ELENA GOMEZ’ 10-month long Weeknd has come to and end, and the workweek kicks off once more. It was in fact The Weeknd who called quits on his relationship with the former Disney star. It happily seems that there was no friction or discord between them, though. If there was, they kept it under wraps like any decent couple-no-more would do. The only no-no we can think of is that Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, (The Weeknd’s real name) broke it off with her over the phone. Let’s give him the benefit of doubt, though, and assume he was halfway across the world or something – their busy schedules were cited as a major reason for the breakup, after all. But who’s to fill his place? None other than Justin Bieber, by the looks of things. The two have been spotted together a number of times in recent weeks, including a bike ride. No official word yet regarding a full-on relationship has been released, but there are tell-tale signs of a re-blooming romance. And let’s face it, theirs is a romance that seems to have taken on Romeo And Juliet or Anthony And Cleopatra significance. Now we all know how those books end – poorly. But who knows? Perhaps this time around old Bieber may yet turn out to be a strapping young gentleman, and ensure a happy ending. He’s clearly besotted with this girl. We’ll be keeping our eyes on these two...

Yes, he has seen a role or two come his way of late, but there’s really nothing to write home about. Life As A House saw him deliver one of his best performances to date – way back in 2001. George Lucas and the Star Wars prequels are largely to blame for his ‘demise’. Lucas is not the most consummate writer of dialogue and Christensen’s deadpan acting had him trying to claw his way back into the industry ever since.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake in 2003 showed a lot of promise even though it might not have been everybody’s cup of tea, and what followed were a few films that had potential, but ultimately failed to make waves. New Year’s Eve (2011) though, was a plain disaster. However, the USA Network’s wrenching series, The Sinner might yet bring redemption her way.

Fantastic Four (2005)
Jessica Alba “WHAT!” one may think? Sadly, the answer
is a big, big ‘yes’ when her career becomes the topic of conversation. A chick-flick here and there makes for great late-night viewing with a lover, but her stunning good looks couldn’t rescue the series of utterly bad films she starred in. A good heap of expletives can be used to describe Fantastic Four, The Eye, and The Love Guru. The action film Machete was a heap of fun, but is pretty much where it stops.

H Hollywood, you cruel, fickle, freak-laden mistress. Diamonds may very well be forever, but not necessarily one’s flame in show business. Should an actor be so lucky as to have a star on the Walk of Fame, it might just be the only remnant of a once-relevant career. Your run in the
industry can be a long, fruitful one; it is, however, more likely that a thespian (for various reasons) receives the boot at some point, and there are a few actors casting agents would now rather overlook for a role – or any role. Here are a few who likely call the peanut gallery home these days.

Maybe he has transcended acting; this could be the reason as to why directors do not know what to make of him. Make no mistake, Cage in the past has delivered breathtaking performances. Take Leaving Las Vegas for example. Cage was gripping and the manic acting earned him an Oscar for best actor. He was equally as good in Lord Of War and the National Treasure series one can rewatch a thousand times. The question still, however, begs. Nicolas Cage: good or bad?

hard to establish where exactly things went wrong. The recent reboot of The Mummy starring Tom Cruise had critics and fans alike screaming, “Where is Brendan Fraser!” so maybe he should have stuck to the adventure-style film typecasting trap he fell into. Encino Man was awesome, The Mummy series and George Of The Jungle were fun and Journey To The Center Of The Earth was a feel-good romp. Nothing after 2008 starring Fraser will ring even the slightest bell.
looks and a once-budding career hardly guarantees success in Hollywood. She was on a trajectory toward stardom, but let’s just put it this way: she has a bad attitude. Her roles as Dr Izzie Stevens in Grey’s Anatomy and as Allison Scott in Knocked Up were met with acclaim, but Kat’s subsequent lashing out and insults directed toward those productions was met with great ire. Unlike the title of her latest film, Unforgettable, the majority of her career has been anything but.

THERE is a birthday to be had and we had some behind-the-scenes fun with the cast of The Bold And The Beautiful.
A
FEATURE film is but a fleeting form of entertainment. A soap offers a little extra, a little more to cherish, if you will – the opportunity to build a relationship with a character, for instance. William and Lee Phillip Bel hit the ground running with the creation of The Bold And The Beautiful. They had years’ worth of prior success with The Young And The Restless, but their nerves must have been in tatters on the fateful afternoon of March 23, 1987 when their new show first aired. If they worried, though, it was needlessly. Scores of viewers were ensnared and The Bold And The Beautiful has had people marvelling over the exploits (and sexploits!) of the Forrester family ever since. It has been a daytime television staple the world over and in terms of ratings is rivalled only by its sister-show, the aforementioned Young And The Restless. Eric Forrester (John McCook) and Brooke Logan (Katherine
Kelly Lang) have been spearheading the far-fetched but addictive drama since the show’s inception, and the Forrester Creations kingpin and the serial monogamist are the only two original cast members left. Nevertheless, though a strew of new Forresters and Logans has since entered the family fracas, there have been no fewer gripping instances of manic plot twist, resurrection, and good old-fashioned backstabbing! Turning 30 may be a terrifying prospect for most; for all involved in The Bold And The Beautiful, however, it’s a splendid feat. We recently had the absolute pleasure to meet not one, but three members from said families famed for their conniving ways. Their characters might be suspect at times, but people Magazine can attest that Jacob Young (Rick Forrester), Karla Mosley (Maya Avant Forrester) and Heather Tom (Katie Logan) are nothing if not the nicest folks you could ever hope to meet. A prodigious applause for a further three decades!

Karla Mosley
ARLA MOSLEY – beauty encapsulated. It became glaringly apparent, from the word go, that she is a sprightly woman, a very gregarious one and, moreover, someone who harbours a deep sense of altruism. Karla herself is a vegan (since the age of 10) and often she’ll be asked what her reasons are. “No one else in my family was and when I look back now, books like Charlotte’s Web, where a young girl on her farm saves a pig from slaughter, messages like that, I think, really influenced me as a child. I know the power of storytelling and how it affects us – sometimes even more than news.” Her character, Maya Avant Forrester, is somewhat an enigma and one bent on shunning a certain stereotype some may hold. Maya was originally somewhat villainous – her background is that of an ex-convict. Of late she is married to the heir apparent of Forrester Creations, Rick (Jacob Young). But a major twist was to be had, and Maya became the first regular transgender character in the history of American daytime television. When queried on Maya, Mosley explained as
H
Jacob Young
ERE we have the proverbial man-that-hasit-all – the prodigious son of the Forrester household, Rick, played by the ridiculously dashing Jacob Young – you can’t begin to imagine the reception he had among the ladies here with us. Or perhaps you can! Notwithstanding his golden boy appearance, Jacob is an easy-going gentleman who is very humble by nature. Rick vies for the Forrester throne; Jacob wholeheartedly pursues what makes him the happiest. While Jacob and his character Rick differ in many respects, he believes that to truly take on a role and make your portrayal of it sincere and convincing, you really do have to put in a part of who you really are. “There are obviously his beliefs and my beliefs and the things he’s passionate about are not exactly the same things that Jacob is passionate about...but there’s always and element of yourself in it,” Young says of the overlapping qualities between himself and his

such. “So she’s not the first, but she is the first series regular. Maya was the first lead character on a network television show, not just in soaps, but in the United States to have her story told. It was incredibly exciting for our show and for me. I really believe, personally as an artist, that social justice, activism and art go hand-in-hand. It was a real gift for me to portray this character and be an ally to that community.” She believes that even if television shows are make-believe, they still serve a function. The stories told in their soaps really are like larger fairy tales and fables. It’s therefore important that they tell stories of all different kinds of people. People that lead different lifestyles are generally far more tolerant, Karla believes. “In the States at the moment a big word is intersexuality. The idea that, particularly oppressed people who have experienced some resistance in being who they are – women, people of colour, people of disabilities, trans people, gay people; there’s a shared understanding of feeling different... character. Family is of cardinal importance to Young. He lives with his wife of 10 years, Christen, and their three children Luke, Molly and Grace in Ogden Valley, Utah on a ranch, the back yard of which he was happy enough to share pictures of – a stunning vista, for a stunning personality. (As a reference for us South Africans, the area he lives in resembles the Small Swartberg Range in the Laingsburg area). Luckily for Jacob, his schedule suits his family-driven routine quite well. The cast shoots eight episodes Tuesdays through Fridays, which enables the Youngs (but never restless) to spend as much time as possible together. “It obviously gives us a great deal of time off. I realised I have three children I didn’t want to raise in Los Angeles – that was my choice. It’s congested, I lived there for 10 years – I grew up on a big ranch in Washington State and I wanted my kids to have a similar upbringing that I did...” [continues on page 79]
Heather Tom
OY, if looks could kill – they’d have a tough time choosing their weapon, what with beauty, magnanimity and grace apparent in equal measures when it comes to this star. What else would you expect from a classy lady from the American Midwest? Much like her character, Katie Logan, Heather is an astute gal who knows what she wants. If you’ve ever made the mistake of doubting the acting talent available on a daytime soap, you’ve clearly missed her performances – her mantelpiece is likely littered with awards and statuettes. An interesting thing to note in Heather’s award-winning roles is that, in 2012, she became the first actress in television history to win an Emmy Award in the Younger, Supporting and Lead Actress categories. Not only that, but in 2000 she and her brother, David became the first pair of siblings to be nominated for an Emmy Award in the same year. Credentials abound, it seems. Heather’s mighty career
in television began as far back as 1989. She shared her name with her character in an appearance on the beloved family sitcom Who’s The Boss? and there’s an interesting story behind the casting. “While I was in Seattle I met my now manager who was choreographing a show I was in. He was going to Los Angeles to become an agent and he needed clients to send out. He asked, ‘Why don’t you come down and sleep on my couch for three weeks?’ So we I went down and slept on his couch in his studio apartment for three weeks and by the end I had a guest star on Who’s the Boss? I’ve been in the business pretty much since I came out of the womb,” she jokingly added. “I did commercials and modelling in Chicago and in Seattle we did more theatre and independent films. When we came to Los Angeles it was just kind of, you know, whatever paid. My sister was on The Nanny and my brother was on The Young And The Restless... [continues on page 79]”

S women we tend to spend a lot of time making ourselves up in the mornings just to look presentable to the world, when there are so many other resources for us to look and even feel better, with no wasted time in getting ready in the mornings. Wouldn’t you love that extra bit of beauty sleep everyday? Just an extra 15 minutes to feel rejuvenated and fresh! Treatments that allow us to get up and go and still feel beautiful without spending too much time is every girl’s dream! Microblading has helped to make this a reality. Paramedical micro-pigment specialist, Nicol Frank, from Blush, gives us 10 things to consider before microblading your brows to celeb-approved perfection. Olivia Culpo
Ayanda Thabethe
FALL in love with your brows!
1. Microbladed Brows Are Not Permanent: They last three
to five years, with colour refreshers done annually. Microbladed brows can be changed in terms of the colour and shape when doing the yearly refreshers. They can be darkened or lightened according to the client’s preference.
Nicol Frank 2. Two Sessions Are Needed For The Perfect Brows! Your average person needs about two
sessions. The initial session, and then a follow-up session six weeks later for touch-ups. You then do yearly colour refreshers to keep the brows looking fresh. Save up! It’s the very best investment.
3. Some Skin Types Retain Ink Better Than Others:
Very oily skin types are the most difficult to work with. Oily skin has a risk of rejecting the pigment and is more prone to pigment hydration, which is where the pigments fans into each other, the strokes blend and it ends up looking like a powder-filled brow more than it looks like distinct strokes. Even so, it’s still a worthwhile investment and makes the world of difference. Microblading also encourages hair growth, so more often than not, your brows will be much more dense and full. 4. Your Eyebrows Are Not Entirely Identical: They are sisters, not twins. The key is to keep them as similar as possible, while keeping their natural charm. 5. Your Brows Lighten After Scabs Come Off: It takes six full weeks for the colour to pull through the skin, this is why we wait six weeks before doing a touch-up. Yes, they will be darker when they are first done and while they are healing, but do not panic, they will settle and lighten considerably. 6. Brows Can Always Be Fixed: If you don’t like something about your brows, they can be fixed, even after microblading has been done.
7. Before Your Appointment, Let Your Brows Grow Out: Do not get them waxed, threaded or plucked. Allow your therapist to shape them properly.
8. Think About The Colour And Shape That You’d Like, But Be Realistic: When microblading is done, it looks most
natural when kept in the natural hairline. Your brow colour should match your natural hair colour. 9. It Is Mostly A Painless Procedure: The brows are completely numbed to make sure that no pain is felt and to ensure that it’s as comfortable as possible.
10. Make Sure You Follow The Aftercare Instructions:
They are there for a reason and if you follow them as you should, your results will be fantastic. A therapist can tell when a client has not followed the correct and instructed aftercare procedure.

PLANNING for tomorrow, today.
HAT do winning actress Diane Keaton, talk show host Oprah Winfrey, and sexy starlet Angelina Jolie have in common? They are all women who run their own households. Granted, these highly successful powerhouses have more money to burn than the average working woman and more than likely don’t ever feel the end-of-the-month pinch, but perhaps we can take a feather out their caps on how to manage a household and control finances. “Forty percent of South African households are headed by women who, on average, earn about half of what their male counterparts do. These women do not only care for the daily needs of their children, but in many cases for those of members of their extended family, too, and they often find it difficult to implement long-term financial plans,” says Sonja Visser, CEO of African Unity Life, an insurer that specialises in funeral and other long-term insurance products across income levels. “A financial plan can help women take far better control of their budgets to ensure that their loved ones are well cared for.” There are a number of things that can be done to ensure that what is spent is in line with financial goals. Larger household expenses like utilities (water, electricity and fuel), transport and food take up the majority of most monthly budgets, so consider a detailed household budget to be first on a list of priorities. A list of these items and what they cost will indicate what is left for other necessities such as funeral cover and life insurance. Sonja says the next step is to identify which of these expenses will still need to be paid in the unfortunate event that the head of the household or breadwinner passes away or becomes disabled. Having a clear idea of these costs will help set aside funds and guide the type of insurance options that should be considered, and what is affordable. This will make provision for funeral costs as well as a regular income
www.peoplemagazine.co.za
that will ensure that children’s current and future education fees are taken care of. “Acquiring a funeral policy is the first step many people take to ensure that they and their families can afford a dignified funeral. Sonja Visser, CEO of Choosing the right African Unity Life funeral policy can prove a challenge as there are many options and providers – and not all of them are reliable,” says Sonja. “It is crucial that consumers are sure that the policy they purchase is with a registered and trustworthy service provider.” When choosing a policy, the family’s needs need to be carefully considered. The cover that is chosen should include the appropriate range of benefits, such as the required casket, transport services for family and friends to the funeral, a grocery benefit (to support the family for a short while), airtime to contact relatives and friends, and even – in some cases – education fees for the children of a deceased breadwinner. Benefits will vary according to the funeral plan and level of cover chosen. “It is important to note that medical examinations are not necessary to take out a funeral policy,” says Sonja. “However, there is usually a waiting period – generally of about six months.” When considering any kind of insurance product, like funeral cover, it is advisable to check the credentials of the financial services provider (FSP) and intermediary if you choose to use them, to compare the premiums that have been quoted on, and to check the fine print. “It is very important that you make sure that the person who is selling the policy to you is registered with the Financial Services Board (FSB) or works with a registered FSP. They must present their licence to you, if you request it – which I strongly recommend you do. Additionally, funeral policies are often administered and sold by third party funeral administrators, so it is important to know who the insurer that underwrites the risk is.”
facebook.com/peoplemagsa
Sonja Has The Following Tips That Can Be Used As A Checklist When Taking Out A Funeral Policy:
BE sure to confirm the details of the intermediary and their relationship with the insurer. Intermediaries must be mandated by insurers to sell their products. ALWAYS complete a policy proposal form yourself. GIVE complete and accurate information. ALWAYS read any document thoroughly before signing it. YOU have a 30-day grace period to
cancel a policy or make amendments – enquire about this ‘cooling-off’ period. MAKE sure the policy contract is what you understood it should be. ALWAYS thoroughly read the terms and conditions, benefits, premiums and exclusions. ASK what the implications are to replace one policy with another. KEEP written proof of your correspondence and dealings with the insurer and intermediary.
Sonja adds that once a policy is in place, there are still a few things to be aware of regarding the actual claims process. Most insurers will pay out within 48 hours if the correct documentation is submitted. When a claim is submitted, you must also provide a death certificate, proof of banking and the applicable claim forms. Remember: THE insurer cannot stipulate what the claim payout is to be used for. YOU do not get any money out if you cancel the policy.
IT is a pure risk insurance product, which means that the premium you are paying is used to cover the risk of your passing away. THE moment you cancel the policy or it lapses (if premiums are not paid) your cover will be forfeited and no claim will be paid. ALWAYS ask for a written explanation for claims that are rejected or not paid. AN insurer must always advise the holder of a policy if and when it will be cancelled.

HE name Reeva Steenkamp is synonymous with one of the most talked-about murder trials in history. At age 29, Reeva had the world in the palm of her hand when she was killed by her boyfriend, South African paralympic superstar Oscar Pistorius. Shot four times behind a closed bathroom door, her death was a tragic call to stand strong together against domestic abuse, giving victims the voices they don’t necessarily know they have. Tragic as it was, Reeva’s death was a catalyst for something beautiful – The Reeva Steenkamp Foundation. Reeva’s cousin Kim Martin has been instrumental in pushing the Foundation. Speaking exclusively to people about Reeva’s death, she says the Foundation was a way to keep Reeva’s legacy alive. “Reeva and I were extremely close. We were more like sisters than cousins. My children thought of her as their aunt. We would confide in each other and our relationship was incredibly special and unique,” says Kim. “We’re quite a small family – our fathers are brothers and are very close, so we would spend all our weekends and holidays together. Reeva’s parents (my aunt and uncle) basically brought us up as sisters and Reeva and I would spend all our free time at the ‘stables’ with our horses. It was extremely hard for our whole family when they moved to Port Elizabeth in 1992.” Kim says one of her fondest memories of Reeva was as a flower child at Kim’s first wedding. “She was so adorable and so proud to be my flower girl. As an adult, my fondest memory was the time we would spend watching movies together and irritate my husband with our hysterical laughing.” The last time Kim saw Reeva alive was a month before her death – a catch-up brunch Kim will never forget. “Reeva moved down to Cape Town for about six months from about October 2011 to March 2012, and had come to stay with us. She added a special spark to our lives. It was like having a slumber party with your best friend for six months. We all bonded so much during that time. I honestly feel that we were given that opportunity because of what was going to happen to her. Then she

them and to empower these women through education and skills development to become self-sufficient. “My involvement in the foundation was obviously driven by my love for Reeva and wanting to keep her legacy alive and to honour her wish to one day open a safe house. In doing so I have ignited a passion inside me to help others, which has come from a personal experience that I was not ready to acknowledge until now. I am very passionate about domestic violence, although the foundation does not serve domestic abuse alone,” says Kim. “Reeva’s death has not only changed my life but each and every member of our family. I have realised that all life’s experiences shape you and prepare you for your purpose. I get very sad when I think of all the life experiences that Reeva won’t get to have, but at the same time I also smile when I think of all the woman and children that she is and will be helping. I am honoured to be given this opportunity to help others through Reeva’s name.” The foundation is arranging a picnic event to start off this year’s 16 Days Campaign on November 25 with a fashion show picnic on the beautiful Lourensford Estate in Somerset West. With a dress code of ‘picnics and pastels’, celebrities and guests will enjoy a fashion show with models dressed in summer 2018 fashion from top local designers Craig Port, Jade Saunders, Lara Klawikowski, and Bokang Lehabe. Good Hope FM’s Ayanda Dlamini will MC the event. This is something to honour all affected by domestic abuse, and will be a way to create awareness of the work the foundation does, and to raise funds for the project. Award-winning singer-songwriter and TV actress Tarryn Lamb, who recently performed her debut solo concert in Cape Town to a sold-out audience, will perform some of her new material at the Reeva Renaissance picnic. Proceeds from the event will help the foundation buy ‘Reeva Packs’– a world-first innovation which contains information and education to stop domestic violence. These packs are distributed to victims by government and private institutions. Tickets, at R390 per person, include a harvest table picnic by Mill House Restaurant, with iced tea and flavoured water stations. The event starts at 14h30pm and ends at 17h30pm. Tickets can be booked by visiting www.Reevasteenkampfoundation. org/#events.

moved back to Joburg and we didn’t get to see her again that year as she was getting very busy with work and she did the Tropica Island Show. The last time we got to spend together was January 2, 2013, when we met for brunch down at the beach in Cape Town. Reeva wanted to go there because that’s where our grandparents’ ashes are scattered. I didn’t realise that was the last time I would ever see her. I met Oscar for the first time that day too. At first I thought he was nice. He was very shy, and I wondered why he was so insecure. Then when he became a little irritated with the waiters I thought something was a bit odd about him. Then when he left the table I asked Reeva if she was happy. That’s when she smiled and shrugged her shoulders and said, ‘We have to talk’.” The day Kim found out Reeva had been killed is forever etched in her memory. “That was the worst day of my life,” she says. “We were stuck in morning traffic when we heard the breaking news story on the radio. I felt like I couldn’t breathe. I didn’t want it to be true. I said to my husband that I hoped Oscar had been cheating on Reeva and that it was someone else in his house. But when I got to my The Reeva Foundation seeks to mother’s assist victims of domestic violence house, my greatest fear was realised.” Kim attended most of the murder trial, travelling up and down to Pretoria almost every week. When asked if she believed the court system ahd failed Reeva she replied, “I feel there was too much evidence that was not taken into consideration. Hours and hours of evidence that was dismissed. We have to respect the decision of the courts but we don’t always have to accept it. The hardest part of the trial for me was the constant media attention. Sitting in court and having to listen to hurtful things being said, feeling as if at times Reeva was being forgotten. It was very difficult, always being asked to comment on how I felt, what I thoght, when all I really wanted to do was scream and shout. At the same time, I wanted to make sure Reeva’s name was being kept alive. Watching my aunt and uncle suffer and seeing their pain every day is something I wouldn’t wish on anyone.” Kim is instrumental in the Reeva Steenkamp Foundation and passionate about the fight for women of domestic violence. The foundation strives to be Reeva’s voice and continue her work to educate the world against the abuse of women and children; to educate women of their self-worth and right to a safe environment; to inform victims of abuse of the resources available to

HOCKING video footage has emerged of a zoo keepers moment of negligence that lead to the death of a rare white tiger. There are only about 200 of these tigers left and as such Shreyas, as she was called, was one of the star attractions at the Bannerghatta Biological Park in Bangalore, India along with her partner named Amar. The video captures the exact moment in which the two tigers notice a gate left open in their enclosure and slowly nose their way into the cage next door. They have only ventured a few metres into the new environment, and casually settled under a tree, when they are surrounded by three large Bengal tigers. Shreyas stands and moves away followed closely by the others, the action is almost lethargic as the white cat tries to show she is no threat, but the Bengal tigers are having none of it. She has ventured into their enclosure and they follow her, casually, lazily until one of them suddenly strikes pulling her to the ground, and the others move in. Zoo keepers can be heard blowing hooters, and shouting the entire time, trying to distract the relentless Bengal tigers, but it’s no good. Shreyas, received injuries to her spine, face and paws and died four days after desperate zoo keepers were able to separate the large animals. Amar also suffered injuries to his jaw and paws, but has since recovered from his injuries. Bannerghatta Biological Park director Santosh Kumar explained that the incident had occurred simply because ‘someone’ had left the gate between the two enclosures open by accident while letting Safari vehicles enter the enclosure. C Jayaram, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests for the government said an investigation has been launched. “It should not be repeated and people who were lethargic must be punished,” he explained.

EABETSWE* is a girl I met on Facebook recently. She said she liked my status updates and photos, and we agreed to meet at an uMhlanga Rocks pub... But she came with five friends, and asked that I pay for them also! I agreed, but I insisted we sit at a different table from theirs because I wanted to get to know her. Bad mistake. I don’t think she listened to anything I had to say. She kept turning her head towards her friends and laughed with them. Two hours later they were drunk – and the alcohol turned them into idiots. They started bickering with each other, erupting sometimes into tearful, dramatic scenes. I decided I’d had enough. I stood up and stormed out of the pub. As I walked along the lane, passing from one wine bar to another, I was lured by a glittering display of chocolates, ice cream and milkshakes at a Milky Lane Shop. Stainless steel arms were mixing creamy-liquid waves. One container held white chocolate, the other milky brown. It was soothing to watch as the slush was swirled and folded. Maybe a milkshake would cool me down, I though. I walked inside, and that’s when Reabetswe hollered my name from behind. ‘Themba*, where are you going?’ she asked. ‘Getting a chocolate milkshake and going home,’ I replied. ‘Who’s going to pay the bill?’ she demanded. I turn and smiled at the cashier: ‘Can I have a chocolate milkshake?’ ‘We are leaving now,’ Reabetswe shouted at me. Then she grabbed my arm. Tell us your story. I shook my head. ‘I’m staying. E-mail a. Go without me,’ I shrugged robertc@caxton.co.z out of her grip. y! pa we nt, we pri sions to ‘Come with me or you are not (Please keep all submis ds.) getting lucky tonight!’ no more than 500 wor ‘No, I need this Milky Lane
chocolate milkshake more than I want you,’ I told her. ‘But – who’s gonna pay the bill at the pub?’ ‘I’ve already paid the waitress.’ She turned and rocketed her way down the lane, bashing her leg on a chair and swearing. I’d had a choice between her and chocolate milkshake – the chocolate milkshake won. I paid for the milkshake and sat at the table. It was smooth and reassuring; it comforted me and made me happy. ‘Excuse me,’ a female voice said from behind. ‘Would it be okay if I shared your table?’ ‘Why not?’ I said. The speaker put down her mug of hot chocolate and sat. ‘Your – friend isn’t coming back?’ ‘Oh… No, she certainly isn’t.’ She opened her mouth to say something else, but hesitated. ‘She’s history to me,’ I said. ‘Here’s to liberation.’ She raised her mug. ‘Congratulations.’ ‘Thank you. I’m Themba.’ ‘I’m Pearl*, and I’m a choc-aholic.’ ‘That makes the two of us,’ I laughed. ‘Have you tried the new spicy hot chocolate? It’s sublime...you haven’t lived till you’ve tried Naidoo’s chillies chocolate milkshake down the road.’ Two hours later it was time to say goodnight. She walked with me to a taxi cab and asked for my phone number. I gave it to her. ‘I will call. I’m not one of those girls who says they’ll phone, then don’t,’ she told me. ‘Do you realise that you are exactly the same colour as the caramel milkshake they were mixing in the vat?’ I smile. ‘Yeah.’ She got inside her cab and I waved her goodbye. It’s two weeks later – but she hasn’t called. Why didn’t I take her number, or better yet why didn’t I take her surname? I would have searched for her on Facebook and sent her a message. Maybe I’ll get lucky next time...”
‘I’D had a choice between her and chocolate milkshake – the chocolate milkshake won.’

THE guys that informally collect recycling work in our suburb do a great job and are at least earning a living as opposed to turning to crime or grants. I saw one guy picking up litter on our main street in Cyrildene. I stopped to ask him if he was recycling that too and he said that he was just trying to keep the streets clean so people would realise they are not in the way and are actually helping to keep suburbs clean. LOVED by all for decades, it came as a huge shock to hear that comedian Bill Cosby was under investigation for sexual assault. The A-lister made headlines – and continues to do so today as the trial goes on – for some dark and terrible secrets. Behind that sweet, funny TV persona there apparently lay a monster who hurt many women – over 50, to be a little more precise. They’ve all come forward accusing the actor of drugging them and sexually abusing them and/or raping them over his years in the limelight. He continues to deny all accusations, and it’s anyone’s guess as to the outcome of the trial; but one thing is for sure: his image has been totally destroyed.
JOHNNY’S ABUSIVE SPLIT – 2016
HE’S not only one of the most talented actors in Hollywood, but the one man almost every woman blushes for. So when news broke that Johnny Depp and wife Amber Heard were splitting up, with accusations of abuse surrounding the actor, the world was horrified. Heard filed for divorce after just a year of marriage, claiming the actor had beaten her up. Strangely, though, when the divorce was finalised – in a $7-million (about R100-million) settlement – Heard withdrew her request for a domestic violence restraining order against Depp.

Reality Drama At Its Best KIM’S TAPE TO FAME – LEAKED IN 2007
SHE might be a huge star today, but let’s not all forget how Kim Kardashian and her family rose to fame. It was a short feature, which saw her in bed with a man – guess she had the secret to good reality TV from the start! Yep, it all started with a little sex tape she made with Brandy’s little brother Ray J – and while that romance didn’t last, Kim’s ‘15 minutes of fame’ did. The socialite made the famous sex tape in In 2003, which was later ‘leaked’ conveniently in time for her family to launch their new reality TV show, Keeping Up With The Kardashians, in 2007. Kim filed a lawsuit against Vivid Entertainment, who distributed the film as Kim K Superstar, but later dropped it and reportedly settled for $5-million. Planned or not, it help launch her career – which since then has seen her strip naked for Playboy, and beyond.
ONE NIGHT IN PARIS – 2003
JUST like her former BFF, Kim Kardashian, hotel heiress Paris Hilton is known for the one night many men still download today. The sex tape, titled 1 Night In Paris, also had a convenient release, having been ‘leaked’ just before the first episode of her reality show The Simple Life launched, and showed Paris and then boyfriend Rick Salomon enjoying a wild night together. The reality show, which had Paris starring alongside another ex-BFF, Nicole Richie, just helped her fame and fortune grow.

Hollywood Behind Bars PARIS’ DRAMATIC TRIP TO JAIL – 2007
When Substance Abuse Changes Careers
THE sex tape wasn’t enough attention it seems so Paris Hilton got some jail time in to make more headlines. In 2006 her life went from simple to complicated when she was arrested on suspicion of DUI while on her way to an In-N-Out Burger store. The hotel heiress pleaded down to reckless driving in January 2007 and was sentenced to three years’ probation, ordered to attend alcohol-education classes and fined $1 500 – a common result for first-time offenders, say sources.
KHLOÉ’S BIG ARREST – MARCH 2007
THE family reality show Keeping Up With The Kardashians had just taken off in 2007 when daughter Khloé was arrested for a DUI. Scripted? Coincidence? We still don’t know; but what we do know is that it worked for ratings. It seems the now-successful and most mature sister had issues growing up, issues which led to drinking and driving and a big arrest. She was then sentenced to up to 30 days in Los Angeles County jail for violating probation following a DUI arrest, and enrolled in an alcohol treatment programme within three weeks of her release from jail – which occurred three hours after her first entering due to overcrowding. How convenient!
LANCE BUSTED DOPING – 2013
ONCE by loved by all, now disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong took a huge knock after being busted for doping in 2013. For much of his career, Armstrong faced persistent allegations of doping, which he aggressively denied until there was no more denying in 2013. Armstrong confessed to the doping and so started his fall from grace.
AMANDA’S BIG BREAKDOWN – 2012
LINDSAY’S ‘90-DAY’ SENTENCE – 2010
LINDSAY LOHAN is still a troubled girl, but back in 2010 she faced 90 days in prison after two DUI incidents landed her in hot water – and after she violated her probation, of course. She pleaded no contest to being under the influence of cocaine and reckless driving but only spent 84 minutes in jail, with three years’ probation. Sounds oh-so-harsh, doesn’t it?
FROM child star to hot mess, Amanda Bynes is yet another youngster in Hollywood who couldn’t handle fame and fortune and turned to drugs and alcohol to get by. But this star really got out of hand, and even threw a bong out the window of her midtown apartment once. Drinking and drugs became her new lifestyle, as did DUIs and hit-and-runs, as well as starting a fire in the driveway of a stranger’s home – all of which led the star’s arrest and more than one visit to rehab. Bynes was hospitalised under a 72-hour mental-health evaluation hold and her parents filed for conservatorship. Today she’s trying to get her life back on track, and is even reportedly doing a fashion design course, but as for her career in show business, we will be shocked to see her make a real comeback.

Family Affair THE INFAMOUS LIFT FIGHT – 2014
SO we know not all families get along, but how many of you have had to witness your husband and your sister go at it physically – in a lift of all places? For pop star Beyoncé it was a night she will never forget. Though in truth, the 2014 post-Met gala lift fight between husband Jay-Z and sister Solange Knowles was something to remember for all, not just Bey. The in-laws got into a very heated altercation which landed up in a scuffle. And while it took three years for Jay-Z to share his side of the story – where he admitted to them having a disagreement, adding that they have now worked through their issues – we will never forget how Bey just stood around watching. Too much alcohol perhaps? Too much power? Either way – simply shocking behaviour.
A White House Affair CLINTON’S DIRTY BUSINESS – 19951997
WE love us a good White House scandal – and former US president Bill Clinton sure offered some of that during his presidency when he was busted having an affair with staff member Monica Lewinsky. At first denying it, it didn’t take long before Bill to come clean about a very dirty night. At the time, Bill, who was 49, was accused of having sexual relations with the 22-year-old Lewinsky, a White House intern. The scandal, which is sometimes referred to as ‘Monicagate’, ‘Lewinskygate’, ‘Tailgate’, ‘Sexgate’, and ‘Zippergate’, left many – including wife Hilary Clinton – stunned. Clinton was put up for impeachment after his second term in 1998 on two charges: one of perjury and one of obstruction to justice, but he was subsequently acquitted on all impeachment charges.
When Fame And Fortune's Not Enough
WINONA RYDER’S SHOPLIFTING SPREE – DECEMBER 2001
THERE’S nothing like a little shopping to make a rich celebrity feel better, right? Well, what about a little shoplifting? What exactly was going through Winona Ryder’s mind the day she chose to help herself in a store, we don’t know, but we do know that it left her in some very hot water. The actress, who was very successful at the time, shocked Hollywood when she was arrested at the Saks Fifth Avenue in Beverly Hills after store clerks said they saw her place an estimated $4 760 worth of clothes and accessories into her bag with the security tags ripped off. She was charged with grand theft, and faced a charge of illegal possession of prescription drugs, since police said they found a small number of prescription pills on her at the time too. According to Ryder’s attorney, the pills were painkillers prescribed for the actress, and that she was ‘not under the influence’. She was released on $20 000 bail.
RYAN’S ROBBERY LIE – 2016
IT was The Rio Olympics, but instead of making headlines for his swimming, American swimmer Ryan Lochte was making headlines for all the wrong reasons. Little did he know at the time that what he thought was a little white lie could have cost him his entire career! Lochte and three of his US teammates – Gunnar Bentz, Jack Conger and James Feigen – were suspended from swimming (Ryan for 10 months) after fabricating stories of a robbery. The incident took place in the early morning hours as the swimmers we coming back after a night of partying. According to reports, Lochte initially said their cab was pulled over by armed men posing as police, but the athletes had not been robbed at all. They reportedly stopped at a petrol station, damaged a bathroom and were confronted by employees. Lochte was ordered to perform 20 hours of community service before reinstatement.

A BRAND IS A PR BY ROBERT CLUNIE
WE take a look at a few fan favourites that have ruled their respective roosts with bullish permanence in the South African market for more than 30 years.
MAN Y think of Wimpy as a purebred Mzansi brand. It was actually founded in 1934 in Chicago, but after a few move s it is now headquartered in Johannesburg . The first local branch opened in Durb an in 1967. The name is a curious one too. It was named after J. Wellington Wim py from the Popeye cartoons.
WHERE would we be as a society without this South African favourite? The recipe so nearly booked a one-way ticket to Davey Jones’ Locker when the SS Quanza was shipwrecked off the coast of East London in 1852. It was only during the First World War that the chutney was produced on a larger scale.
YOU know that women’s monthly magazine mommy dearest can’t wait to purchase come month end? Yes, that magazine is one of the oldest Afrikaans lifestyle magazines in the country. ‘Sinvol, Stylvol, Propvol’ – can there be a more apt slogan for a publication that launched in 1942? Rumour has it that our golden girl, Charlize Theron, likely wouldn’t have gone on to win her Oscar if she hadn’t won Rooi Rose’s Supermodel of the Year competition...
MIKE ILLION gifted us the black-and-white-tiled culinary delight way back in 1972. The first restaurant opened in Greenside, Johannesburg and the chain has not skimped on quality in 45 years. The Parktown outlet is housed in a beautiful Edwardian mansion called Eikenlaan.
AFTER 1896 CNA basically became the de facto news agency in the country. There was once a time when Central News Agency stores were packed on Saturday mornings and the name itself became a generic term for a store selling books and stationery.

KLIPDRIFT is so because normal wine simply wouldn’t do… The story goes that the first drop of Klipdrift Brandy was distilled at 20h02 in 1938, but its history goes back to 1921 when one Kosie Marais exploited the Robertson area’s fertile land and its impact on early grapes on his father’s farm. There has been gold in every drop since.
THE industrial production of corned beef only started in the 19th century, but Bully Beef as we know it is a South African staple – love it or hate it. It was an essential field ration during the Boer War and the Second World War. It was used as military rations for many years after that, too.
THE UK can thank South Africa greatly for the gift we bestowed on them. The peri-peri chicken chain opened its doors in 1987. Fernando Duarte and Robert Brozin bought out a Portuguese restaurant in Johannesburg for just R80 000 after they fell madly in love with their chicken – the rest, as they say, is history.
facebook.com/peoplemagsa
ROMISE THE age-old favourite is basically local in every country it is sold in. It was first introduced in the US in 1886 as a patent medicine. It has become the drink of choice for millions of people since, and it pairs so nicely with a bit of Klipdrift! It is a market behemoth in almost every nation on Earth – South Africa had its first taste around 1940 in Port Elizabeth.
STER KINEKOR is responsible for many a magical cinematic moment and likely many a first kiss too since 1969. A movie star, if you will, was born when 20th Century Fox pulled out of the South African Market. The company has also managed to power through the rise of DVDs and streaming services.
YES, a little self-love is a good thing! We’ve been around for 31 years, which technically means that we’ll understand those ‘only ’80s kids will understand’ Internet banalities. For three decades now we’ve indulged our beloved readers with celebrity news and human interest stories. And between you and us – our puzzles are a hit!
CHAPPIES has been a South African favourite since the 1940s. It’s hard to believe that once upon a time shopkeepers gave Chappies to customers as change when they were short a cent or two. Nearly all chewing gum is referred to as a ‘Chappie’ now, but none of the others features the ‘Did you know?’ trivia inside the wrapper.
WAS there ever a slogan as catchy as ‘Dis Die Een’! The SABC first started radio broadcasts in 1923, but it was not until 1937 that Radio Suid-Afrika first aired Afrikaans programming – effectively making RSG the first Afrikaans station in the country. It was later renamed Afrikaans Stereo before it took on its slogan ‘Radio Sonder Grense’ as its name.
THE agricultural weekly has been a print powerhouse since its first publication in 1911. South Africa has a strong farming culture and it is therefore no surprise that it is the most read English consumer magazine in Africa specialising in agriculture. Even if agriculture is not your thing, The Hitching Post section always ensures a fun and interesting read. THERE is not a single main street in a small town in South Africa that isn’t flanked by a KFC. Colonel Sanders must be smiling down on us as we are the fast-food chain’s biggest market in the developing world. The first restaurant opened in 1971 and it has been the top food chain for several years by a large margin.
PURISTS would argue wood’s superiority, but any braai master in South Africa would always keep a bag of Charka within hand’s reach. Production and sales started in 1978 and it was also the first charcoal product approved by the South African Bureau of Standards.
SOUTH AFRICAN BREWERIES (or Castle Breweries back yonder) have been keeping the working class happy since 1895. The country was in the middle of a gold rush and miners needed a brew for them to unwind after a hard day’s labour – and here we are. It was the first industrial company to list on the JSE and it currently is the second largest brewery in the world.

Dear Doc
Dr Karen Koch, a medical doctor, answers your health questions.
Q. DEAR DOC, AN I use more than one type of ontraception at a time? I really, eally, really don’t want to fall regnant. I’m currently using the ill, I take it religiously, but I’m wondering whether I should get an ntrauterine device (loop or Mirena) s well? regnancy Paranoia . DEAR PREGNANCY PARANOIA, T certainly sounds like you’ve done ome research. The Pill (also known s combined oral contraceptive ill) is very effective in preventing regnancy. But it is not 100 percent ffective. Fewer than one woman in 00 will get pregnant in a year while aking the combined pill. ’s fairly common for women taking he pill to forget a dose every now nd then. Also, keep in mind that when using other medications (e.g. ntibiotics) the pill may no longer be ffective. Doubling up on contraception is a
good idea – depending on what you plan to combine. An intrauterine device like you’ve suggested is a very effective birth control method. Unfortunately, it can be quite painful for women who’ve never been pregnant (the womb is quite tight). You also can’t use an IUD, which releases hormones, at the same time as the pill – you’re doubling up on your dose of hormones and could give yourself a blood clot (stroke, embolus – not good). Doctors are always going to recommend condoms as the best line of defence as we’re concerned about your catching something other than pregnancy. Condoms are readily available, inexpensive, non-painful and not dangerous to your health. In fact, they are quite the contrary. In your case I suggest you speak to your doctor about your options. Switching you over to something like the Mirena device may reduce your pregnancy anxiety.

A ONE-HUNDRED-AND SIXTY-FIVE kilo woman got married naked – in front of 700 people – after her bespoke wedding dress was cancelled while she languished in a 31-day coma.
SOURCE: PRESS ASSOSIATION
D
OCTORS feared Monique Penberthy, now 32, might not survive after she developed the flesh-eating bug necrotising fasciitis in an abscess beneath her left arm. Fearing she would lose her daughter, her mom, Donna, now 55, cancelled her wedding and her size 32 made-to-measure bridal gown. But when dog trainer Monique defied the odds and pulled through, all she wanted was to tie-the-knot with her truck driver fiancé, Rowan, now 28. “When Rowan told me the wedding had been called off, I was devastated,” she says. “Nearly dying had made me even more determined to become Mrs Penberthy. I wanted to embrace life and everything it offered.” Monique, from Australia, met Rowan in October 2014 online – immediately hitting it off after discovering they shared a common interest in dogs and photography. Meeting in person a few days later, romance blossomed and, by March 2015, they were engaged and planning their wedding, scheduled for Valentine’s Day 2016. “We wanted an Alice In Wonderlandthemed tea party for our wedding. We booked a venue, picked our bridesmaids and even hired the silverware. But for me a big thing was the dress. I struggled to find a dream frock that fitted and suited me. After months of searching I finally snapped up an ivory ball gown. I had my measurements taken, so I could have it made specially.” Sadly, disaster struck when Monique became critically ill in November 2015. After she developed a fever and started vomiting, Rowan rushed her to hospital. “A small abscess under my left arm started oozing and smelling like rotten flesh,” Monique recalls. “Doctors put me into an induced coma to save my life. I’d contracted a flesh-eating bug, which had eaten through my skin.” Doctors have no idea how the bug got into her body, but she had a section of her skin surgically removed to get rid of the infection and rotting flesh. “For 31 days, Rowan prayed for me to wake up, but no-one could say if I’d survive,” she adds. Then, just before Christmas 2015, Monique – who spent 73 days in hospital – came round. Rowan broke the news that their wedding had been called off.
“I was devastated,” she says. “Especially when Valentine’s Day came and went and we weren’t married.” Then, in late March 2016, when Monique read about a local festival, the Confest, she had an idea. To take part, you just had to tell the organisers what you wanted to do and it was displayed on a noticeboard. “There were poetry reading sessions, yoga workshops… So why not a wedding?” she says. Her one big concern about arranging a new date for her nuptials had been finding another wedding dress. But now she had the perfect solution. The festival was clothing optional! “‘How about getting married naked?’” I suggested to Rowan, who simply replied, “Sure, why not? All that matters is you’re alive. I just want to marry you.” So, on March 27, 2016, they were married at Confest in front of 700 people, by a celebrant she had found through Facebook. “I was delighted when she messaged saying: ‘I’ll do it naked as well if you
want.’” Monique wore a veil and a necklace, while Rowan wore a top hat and bow tie – set off by their birthday suits! They even had music provided by some naked opera singers. Monique, who admitted to being nervous ahead of her wedding, says, “It was nothing like we’d planned, but everything we’d wished for. When I saw all the guests and festival-goers waiting, and I was naked, I was terrified. But when I looked around and everyone was smiling and clapping, I was touched. Rowan looked very handsome in his top hat and I’d cheated death, so what did my weight matter? I wasn’t embarrassed. I was more concerned about my hair looking okay, as it had fallen out in clumps since my coma, leaving me selfconscious. Still, when I saw Rowan grinning from ear to ear, nothing else mattered. We had each other, and even my beautiful dogs, Nicolai, a Borzoi and Luigi, a greyhound, were there. And when I looked into the crowd, after saying our vows, everyone was crying and smiling, in a rainbow of emotions as they gave us a standing ovation.” The couple, who have since celebrated their first wedding anniversary with their clothes on, have now happily settled into married life. “Our naked wedding turned out to be far better than the one we’d planned.”

A CELEBRATION of ‘the burning bull’ has fired up controversy. 46 PEOPLE www.peoplemagazine.co.za
S
O gruesome is the Toro de Fuego (translated to ‘Bull On Fire’) festival taking place in the village of Medinaceli, northern Spain, in the upcoming week that it’s captured global attention. The Festival, taking place on the second weekend of November, has been a tradition among villagers for the last 400 years and sees bulls tortured to death. Footage captured last year by animal rights activists has resulted in an ongoing fight to have the Festival banned. The footage, posted on various social media platforms, showed bulls roped to a post
in the town square, fitted with a device attached to their horns and covered with tar, turpentine, clay and mud before the device is set alight. Unshackled once the torches above his head are ablaze, the bull dashes about the square trying to avoid roaring bonfires, as spectators rush in, trying to provoke him. The animal tosses his head again and again, as he turns in one direction then the next, trying desperately to escape the fire burning above his head. As the fire burns, drops of the flammable liquid fall on to the head and body of the animal and loud firecrackers explode above the square.

BEAUTIFUL dancer whom doctors thought brain dead following an horrific crash has made a miraculous recovery after having half her skull rebuilt. Beth Johnson, 21, was an aspiring professional dancer before a car accident left her fighting for her life. Her devastated mom, Lynne, 61, from the UK, was told that brain scans showed no sign of life, and she was prepared to say her final goodbyes. But Beth defied doctors and after having the front part of her skull removed and rebuilt, is finally on the road to recovery after two years in hospital. The student – who has no memory of the accident – was hit by a car in 2015 and suffered seven skull fractures, a broken eye socket and, collarbone, pelvis as well as a collapsed lung and three slipped discs in her back. Beth has since relearnt to talk, walk, and eat, and despite not being able to dance on stage, is hoping to become a dance teacher. “I have danced from the age of three years old and was training to become a professional dancer at a dance academy before my accident. I suffered such a serious head injury that my brain scans showed no activity and my family were told to say their goodbyes. Surgeons decided to remove the front part of my skull in an attempt to relieve some of the pressure in my brain – it was my only chance of survival. I had my skull rebuilt from a bone match that was flown in from Australia three months later. “No one thought I’d ever speak again, let alone walk and be studying at college. At first I used a typewriter-style device that would speak for me; it was frustrating as I knew what I wanted to say but I couldn’t speak. But my recovery is nothing short of a miracle and I’m so thankful to all the doctors and nurses that helped save my life. It has been a slow process but doctors believe my high fitness level from dancing is the reason I survived.” Mom Lynne adds, “She opened her eyes of the first time in March 2016 while we played a song from Les Misérables. And from there she started speech therapy and slowly started to improve... She will never be 100 percent again and has severe memory problems, but she’s improving every day.” Says Beth, “I love dancing but that wasn’t the right path for me...[but] I have a dance teaching qualification, so I’ll hopefully start doing teaching in the near future.”

ONSERVATIONISTS, fishermen and the Humboldt penguins breathed a sigh of relief – for now – as nature won the day against giant mining company Andes Iron, who were thwarted in their attempt to build a massive open-cast mine and port near the National Humboldt Penguin Reserve off the coast of mainland Chile. Rodrigo Flores, vice-president of the fisherman’s union, was pleased with the outcome. “Dominga is an invasive project, for nature and for society. It is incompatible with a place considered a hotspot of biodiversity at the global level,” he said. Oceana, a conservation NGO, said the mine would be far too close at 30km from Choros Island, which the penguins inhabit, and that ‘increased shipping traffic, with its greater risk of oil spills, would do untold harm to a known cetacean migrant route and pristine waters that provide a rich food source to several vulnerable species, including the sea otter’. community in Punta Choros watches over the 880-hectare penguin reserve – which is home to 80 percent of the species. Due to this vigilance in conservation in the area the water is crystal clear and clean. Fisherman Mauricio Carrasco says, “I’ve been diving in other areas and I’ve seen that residue from mining activity is noticeable on the ocean bottom, killing all existing life. That’s what we’re afraid of.” A special government cabinet committee rejected the mining project in August, saying it ‘lacked guarantees for the penguins’. Liliana Yanes, regional director of the National Forestry Office in Coquimbo, said, however, that ‘the reserve is constantly under threat from mega-projects as Andes Iron has said it will take the battle to Chile’s environmental court and up to the Supreme Court if necessary’.
IT’S been another small victory for the good guys as mining is halted near a penguin reserve.

PLASTIC surgery obsessive known as ‘the human Ken Doll’ is back in the limelight after spending the last two rs developing his brand new back plants. This surgery cost Justin R288 000, bringing his grand total spent on his body to over R7.6-million. Speaking before the procedures, Jedlica said, “For me I look at this as being an art form. With my implant design and body modifications it’s much more about making myself exceptionally different from anyone else.” He added, “I had my first latissimus procedure about two years ago and I was the first person in the world to ever embark on an augmentation to their back. I conceptualised the surgery. I designed the implants. Everything healed well, it just ended up being a little bit big. I’m having a revision on my latissimus implants – those are the wings on your back – and I’m having one of my teres implants moved just for symmetry. I’m also having one of my forehead veins cut, tied off and bladed.” To make sure his implants were perfect this time, this long design process took five sample implants and two different implant companies to get it right. “The first step that we are going to

undertake is removing the current latissimus implants,” he explained at the time. “That means they have to make a cut underneath in my armpit. The doctor won’t be able to just take them out like a normal implant because they are so large and they are actually hookshaped.” He continued, “What he will have to actually do is take them and pull them in sections or cut them out in sections and use tongs or his hands to go down my back and pull these pieces out until he gets all of the pocket cleaned out and that implant out of my body.” Luckily for the real-life Ken Doll, he has a great support system of friends and family that stands by his plastic surgery adventures – even if his look gets him a lot of stares and criticism. “My friends are amazing with my plastic surgery, actually,” says Jedlica. “I think they enjoy the fact that it’s a little bit of being non-conformist and speaking out against the typical norms of what Western culture dictates as beautiful. It’s sort of like, the haters keep hating and I stay famous. I become more famous. So at the end of the day my friends all stick by me.” His mom, Tanya Marsik, is his biggest fan and has come to terms with her son’s passion for body modification. “I am really proud of all the surgeries that Justin had done,” she says. “In the beginning, it was a little bit scary, I guess, because it’s hard to see your son go under general anaesthesia and you never know what is going to happen, but he picks the doctors and he is very selective – he is very smart in what he does. Do I ever fear that he might take it too far? He has already taken it kind of far. I never thought it would go this far.” Jedlica’s procedure list includes chest, back, cheek, and buttock implants along with four shoulder surgeries, three bicep surgeries, various lipo surgeries, five nose surgeries, and an eyebrow lift. However, his plastic surgery wish list continues to grow and he has no plans to stop with his obsession for transformation anytime soon. “I love the ability to be able to design and brand my body. I never thought I would be able to live in West Hollywood in a multimillion-dollar home. I attribute a lot of that to the confidence and selfesteem that I got from plastic surgery,” he says, adding, “I chose to look a specific way and it may not be the way everybody else thinks is typically beautiful, but I find it beautiful and that’s really all that matters at the end of the day.”

EET the stunning student with alopecia who is fighting against unrealistic beauty standards by sharing pictures of her bald head with her 26.2K Instagram followers. Lauren Neate, 20, from the UK, started losing her hair when she was just 13 years old. During her teenage years, a devastated Lauren wore wigs to hide her alopecia from everyone apart from her family, as she worried about fitting in with her peers. Now, she’s learnt to laugh about her baldness when the conversation turns to hair. “My aim is to show the people who follow me that you don’t have to conform to the unrealistic beauty standards that the industry sets – I believe I show that by proudly posting photos of myself without my wig,” she says. “Finding out you’re losing hair at 13 is truly heartbreaking, it felt like the end of the world. I was watching all of the girls in school start to straighten their hair and play with make-up and I felt like a total outsider. I hid it from everyone I knew other than my family. All I wanted was to be like all the other girls. For a long time, I covered my alopecia, but that wasn’t healthy and it also wasn’t a long-term solution to dealing with my alopecia. I had wanted to post a photo with no wig for a really long time, and when I finally did I was completely overwhelmed with the response.” Sharing photos on Instagram of herself without her wig was a massive confidence booster for Lauren and she’s working towards being able to step outside the house without one. Lauren is grateful to her friends and family for being supportive of her and understanding her condition, and wants to show other young sufferers that there is nothing to be ashamed of. “I could never have imagined how empowering it is to take off my wig and genuinely not worry about the opinions of others,” she adds. “I spent so long hiding myself, constantly worried when a conversation turned to hair and now I don’t care, in fact I laugh about it. I want to show younger people with the condition it’s nothing to be ashamed of. My advice to anyone out there with alopecia, or any other insecurity, is to make it your strength, not your weakness. I just want everyone to know that they are beautiful, no matter what anyone else or society may tell them.” For more on Lauren, visit her Instagram page at www.instagram.com/laurenneate

BY ROBERT CLUNIE EVER will you see people so happy about such a stringent curfew: in a bizarre attempt to control its students’ movements at night, a lecturer at a Chinese university set forth a few bedtime rules. You’d think tertiary students are of age and therefore free to come and go as they please, right? Wrong. The lecturer requires students to post selfies of themselves in their dorms as lights out time approaches. The said selfies are then to be sent to him via the instant messenger WeChat for visual confirmation. His instructions are sent to students shortly before lights out. His directions clearly state that students be in a certain part of their dorm whilst they strike a very specific pose. His ‘foolproof’ method has oddly been met with great enthusiasm from social media users and students alike.

In due course, they were identified as the men who had robbed banks in Gallatin, Missouri, and Cincinnati, Ohio. Arresting the brothers would be a problem, though. At times their gang numbered 12. Also, they ran Seymour and there was a danger of innocent citizens being killed if force was used. Pinkerton and Winscott met in secret and came up with a plan. One afternoon, a few days later, a train stopped in Seymour. Pinkerton peered out the window. Winscott had succeeded in luring John Reno to the station; the two were standing chatting on the platform. Pinkerton gave the signal. A sheriff and six deputies charged off the train, surrounded John and hauled him back on board. Even though the other brothers commandeered another train and set off after the ‘kidnappers’, the lawmen got away. John Reno was later sentenced to 25 years in jail – but the Reno gang’s reign of terror was far from over!
guard and broke open a safe containing approximately $16 000. Next, the three pushed a larger safe off the moving train, where the rest of the gang was waiting. Then they pulled the communication cord and fled. Later, passenger George Kinney identified two of the men, leading to the arrest of all three. Then Kinney was shot and killed, and the charges had to be dropped. But the gang was far from being in the clear. The Adams Express Company, which had ensured the money in the express car, hired the Pinkerton Detective Agency to track down the outlaws. A few weeks later, a new saloon was opened in Seymour. It was owned by Dick Winscott – who just happened to be an undercover Pinkerton operative. The Reno brothers became regulars and befriended the amiable Winscott. He even persuaded the brothers to pose for a group photograph; Allan Pinkerton had copies made and circulated.

HE five Reno brothers – Frank, John, Simeon, Clinton, and William – grew up in Seymour, Indiana. According to historian William Bell, they were raised in a strict religious farming household and were required to read the Bible all day on Sunday. This didn’t stop the boys from getting in trouble with the law at an early age – for stealing horses, burning down barns and even cheating travellers in crooked card games. Only Clinton stayed out of trouble for all of his life. When the American Civil War started, Frank, John and Simeon made money by enlisting with the Union Army, receiving their pay, then absconding – to enlist elsewhere under different names. Returning to Seymour, they took to robbing banks. On the evening of October 6, 1866, John Reno, Simeon Reno and Frank Sparkes boarded an Ohio and Mississippi Railway train as it started to leave Seymour. They entered the express car, restrained the

CODEBREAKER
CODEBREAKERS require inspired guesswork. They are crosswords without clues. Every letter of the alphabet is used (you might find it useful to cross out the letters located by the grid as you find them) and each letter has its own number. In this puzzle ‘20’ has the letter ‘P’ so a useful start is to insert ‘P’ in all the boxes that contain the number ‘20’. Vowels appear at least once in a word but letters such as and are few.
‘X’
‘Z’
WITHIN this grid are hidden the numbers below. They are found horizontally, vertically, diagonally and back-to-front.

FUN FACTS
“I love music but I can’t sing nor dance.” “I love food but I hate chewing.” “I drive like a taxi driver in a Ferrari.” “I have the worst sweet tooth – so do not deny me any confectionary.” “Leave me at any beach and I’ll make it home.”
What series do you binge-watch and why? I’m currently watching The Fixer, How To Get Away With Murder, Claws, Zoo and Supernatural. I’m fascinated by the amount of research that goes into getting the final product. Locally you’ve got The Queen and Imposters. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be and why? Miami – it has the best coastal line, the best beaches; but also if I want to go shopping I still have access to designer labels. It’s perfect for me. What have you always wanted to do but never had the courage to pursue? I love clothes and I’ve started my clothing line. I just need that extra push to bring my vision into reality. I’d also love to write a children’s story book. You do a lot of work outside of acting. Tell us about some the work you do when not in front of the camera. I’m a motivational speaker – I go around talking to students and I also love addressing my fellow sisters. I’m a philanthropist, I’ve registered a family foundation called the Makgofe Delivery Foundation. My dad instilled in me the concept that sharing is caring. I use it as vehicle to change the narrative for our kids and empower them in whatever way possible, whether it be stationery or sanitary pads. Sounds like you’re doing quite a lot; how are you finding the balance between everything that’s going on? It’s not easy! I think the fact that I’m doing what I love really helps. It never really feels like a job. So I manage to find a balance. Have you ever worked in an industry or field that you didn’t necessarily like? Yes, it was when I worked as a travel consultant. I wasn’t really fully into it compared to what I’m doing now.

Trevor Noah’s Book
Between The Lines

Wins Another Award!
C
ONGRATULATIONS are in order for Trevor Noah! The comedian and host of Comedy Central’s popular talk show The Daily Show has won yet another accolade for his autobiography Born A Crime, having walked away with the Thurber Prize for American Humor. Along with the honour, Trevor takes $5 000 (about R68 000!) and a crystal plaque, which is all just another reminder that the world has fallen in love with Trevor and his story. Born A Crime focuses on the difficulties Noah faced as the son of an African mother and Swiss-German father during the Apartheid era and gives readers an inside look at his life over the years. “When you write a book, first you hope it makes sense. Second, you hope that someone will read it. When that happens, everything else is a dream. Winning the Thurber Prize is something I never could have dreamed of,” Trevor said shortly after winning the award. The runners-up for the prize were Ken Pisani for Amp’d: A Novel and Aaron Thier for Mr. Eternity.

Woman In The Wings Carien Du Plessis
A DEVASTATING explosion hits Wall Street injuring hundreds, and a terrorist organisation claims responsibility. Their motivation is unknown, and officials and the public are worried about another attack. So Federal Agent Archer Carroll and Trading Enforcement Director Caitlin Dillon begin their investigation and discover that the organisation has plans to take over the entire country. James took a different approach when writing this book and split his chapters into cities and people. There are a lot of characters to get used to but the two main ones are very well conceived and interesting – Arch Carrol is particularly strong. Although there’s a bit of a slow start, the book picks up as it progresses.
ALVIE KNIGHTLY is a trainwreck when compared to her perfect twin sister Beth, which has caused some resentment between the two. So when Beth sends Alvie a first-class ticket to visit her in Italy, the Londonnative is hesitant. But, after getting fired, she decides to go to Italy, where Beth asks her to swap identites for a few hours so that she, Beth, can go unnoticed by her husband. Then later she’s found dead in the pool... What was her sister hiding? As Alvie delves into the mystery, she encounters Mafia connections, secret lovers, attractive hitmen, and one extremely corrupt priest. This is a light, fun read; intriguing, if somewhat predictable. Chloé’s writing is fantastic and while this isn’t the best story we ever read, we certainly enjoyed it.
WHAT kind of president could Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma be if she is chosen at the ANC’s December 2017 congress? In this exciting and well-written new book, journalist Carien du Plessis gives readers an inside look at the life of Jacob Zuma’s ex-wife. The book takes an in-depth look at Dlamini-Zuma’s early years, education and involvement in the Struggle, as well as her role as a cabinet minister under all four presidents of democratic South Africa, and her achievements as African Union Commission chairperson. It also looks at the likelihood of Nkosazana’s becoming president, is incredibly thorough and gives readers finer detail about the woman who could potentially take over the ANC.

Younger Now Miley Cyrus
«««
LIKE Madonna, Miley Cyrus has become a queen of reinvention. Each of her studio albums has seen the star push herself creatively and out of the comfort zone she could easily have stayed in. Bangerz, the star’s previous album, is the perfect example of how she dominated a new genre. But it must be said that with Younger Now, Miley doesn’t quite hit the mark. The songwriting is okay-ish, but the production doesn’t elevate the tracks to where they need to be, and so Younger Now doesn’t really have the same impact as her previous records did. That’s not to say it’s all bad – there are a handful of gems – it’s just that ultimately this isn’t the record it could have been. El’s Favourite Track: I Would Die For You

Tell us a bit about the album’s new single African Queen. What inspired it? African Queen is probably one of my favourite songs on the album and I fell in love with it when a good friend of mine sent me the track. It’s got a very continental sound, which is where I think music is going. He titled the track African Queen, which inspired me to write about an African queen and how she wants to be loved. LEGENDARY Afrikaans rock group F*kofpolisiear has finally made their highly-anticipated comeback. What started off as a dream soon became a crowd-funded project which saw the group raise over R1-million. The group promised a kickass album and after months in studio Selfmedikasie is here. The album encompasses all the elements of the group we have fallen in love with over the past few years. The lyrics are profound, Francois Van Coke proves he’s still the same hardcore rocker we met over a decade ago, and the instrumentals are refreshing and intricate. Selfmedikasie was entirely selfproduced and recorded at F*kofpolisiekar’s guitarist, Johnny de Ridder’s studio in the northern suburbs of Cape Town and the result is phenomenal. We’ve missed the group and thrilled they’re back with a bang! El’s Favourite Track: Afgesonder
Magic Touch Of Class
««««
LOCAL duo Touch Of Class is back with an exciting new album. Magic features the duo performing some of the greatest power ballads of our time in both English and Italian and proves that, like fine wine, they get better as the years go on. With tracks like Aspettero, Hallelujah, and Total Eclipse Of The Heart, the two have picked a great variety of tracks for your listening pleasure, and have also collaborated with the likes of Tarryn Lamb from BlackByrd, Monique Steyn and Jannie Moolman, which adds a bit of flair. With a bunch of flawless vocal performances, slick and seemingly effortless production, and a fantastic variety of covers, Touch Of Class have delivered an exceptional album. If golden oldies are your thing, you’ll be very impressed with this collection of tracks. El’s Favourite Track: Hallelujah

HAT’S a season of The Voice without a little drama? Although Jennifer Hudson and Miley Cyrus seem to be getting along on camera, according to an insider, their chemistry isn’t as loving off screen. Adam Levine and Blake Shelton were reportedly teasing the star about her on-again off-again engagement to Liam Hemsworth and it was all fun and games until things were taken too far. “Miley wasn’t in a good mood and is just over them teasing her about Liam,” a source says. “Miley said that they should be asking Jennifer about her long engagement.” J-Hud has been engaged to former pro-wrestler David Otunga since 2008 and the couple seems to be happy with the place their in at the moment. However, when she heard Miley talking about her fiancé, she wasn’t happy. “Jennifer looked Miley right in the eye and told her to never mention her private life again, or even say David’s name,” the source said.

ANOTHER day, another drama for the Jenner family. Although things were going well with Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott, the couple’s relationship has deteriorated, and it seems they’re ready to call it quits – and Kylie has vowed to raise her unborn child alone. “She was hoping Travis would spend more time in LA with her, but he hasn’t slowed down his performance schedule at all,” dishes a source. “He’s still travelling and partying like usual, and though he’s really excited about the baby, Kylie doesn’t think he grasps what’s about to happen. She’s becoming convinced he’ll bail on their relationship before the baby even arrives.” Naturally, the reality star is leaning on her family as her life changes forever. “Since Kim and Kourtney are moms, she feels comfortable talking to them about her fears. The whole family is rallying around her and helping her maintain her self-esteem. Lately, she keeps reminding herself that she built a multimillion-dollar business at 19; she can raise a baby on her own if she has to.” In the meantime, the star has been keeping a low profile and is enjoying a break from the public eye. One thing is for sure, it’s going to be an exciting few months for Kylie.

Heather’s mother would have loved to enter the industry, but, as Heather said with a cheeky smile, “My grandmother did not think of it as an honourable profession.” Ultimately, and happily so, she now finds herself in LA with a prosperous career, a loving family and once-upon-a-time a commute to the studios in Hollywood on her bicycle. And while Hollywood has a bad divorce rap in general, Heather’s personal life is a thriving one. Much like her character Katie, she is loyal and family orientated. “Yeah, I’m married, I’ve been with my husband, not married for 20 years, but I’ve been with him for 20 years and I have a five-year-old.” Husband James and son, Zane actually came to visit her while she was in Cape Town – “We’re going
on safari, it’s going to be great,” Heather added. It was not her first time in South Africa though, but much has changed in the 15 years since she was here last. The local fan base here is a brutally loyal one; a feeling that Heather shares, and she believes in the longevity of The Bold And The Beautiful. “I think Brad, our executive producer and head writer, has done a really good job with innovating. We travel all over the world, we shoot all over the world and he’s kept the show very fresh. He’s dealing with topics that are very ‘now’, like the transgender storyline. You know, it was very risky and he dealt with it in such a beautiful way.”

JACOB has been a stalwart in the realm of television since the late ’90s. He has delved into the world of film, too and has starred in a handful of independent productions over the years. It is in music, though, where a great love of his lies. Young has been a singer from a young age. He has also been involved in musicals, Broadway, choirs and ensembles, but it was not until he bought his first guitar at 18 when an auxiliary career kicked off. “Well, yeah. Music is a big part of my life. I write music and I play and perform, so when I’m not acting I’m typically writing music or doing something to get another gig going. I recently headlined at the South Point Casino in Vegas. It’s always been a huge passion of mine. I just enjoy it, you know. Even if it’s just a small crowd I’ll play just like I’ll do in front of a bigger crowd.” He believes that The Bold And The Beautiful will have a fruitful run for many years to come, whether or not he’ll be part of this providential production in the future. “I definitely believe there is a demand for it given the popularity internationally. Domestically it’s always going to be up in the air. Even if ratings drop in the United States I believe it will still go on for quite some time.” Also, as a spoiler, expect some drama when Maya’s sister is asked to be a surrogate! Not only does she organise shows for The Friends And Families Of The Incarcerated, ‘a support and advocacy group – working mainly with the friends and family on the outside’, but sits on the board of Covenant House and is a celebrity ambassador for the National Eating Disorders Association, as well as a founding member and Philanthropic Chair of Ammunition Theater Company. She is fond of Johannesburg, but there was one moment, as with Jacob and Heather, that stood out in particular for her here in the Republic. Jacob was ambushed by a horde of screaming fans in the Mall of Africa. Babies were flung his way and scores of admirers pushed their luck rather hard to get close to him. A woman even ran after their vehicle just to get a selfie with him. “That was amazing, hysterical and overwhelming. The fans were crazy with Jacob! He had them handing their children to him to kiss. The standout moment during our visits had to be during our mall appearances. The fans were like nothing I’ve ever experienced. They were very emotional. I mean, there were thousands of people there and there was so much love coming at you.”
