WANKE Complex SOCIETY PARTICULAR Location: Shenzhen, China GFA: 234518 m2, 15950 m2 underground Phase: Concept stage, invited competition Date of submition: 2014 10 Personal contribution: Designer (Particularly the design of the commercial square) Project type: Architecture, urban design Description: The project creates a wide range of public activities and links them organically with surrounding transport and cultural facilities. By emphasizing the three-dimensional public space it aims not only to facilitate people’s needs but also to provide rich experience. The orientation of twisted residential towers cleverly echoes the surrounding environment and directs the flows of people towards important transport nodes. A group of business towers rises towards the city centre as a new local landmark. A lower profile near the square reduces the visual pressure and attracts people towards the playful inner public space.

Incubator SOCIETY PARTICULAR Location: Nantong, China GFA: 104250 m2 Phase: DD, schedulled for construction Date of submition: 2013 12 Personal contribution: Design team, drawing set, diagrams & visuals Project type: Architecture Scale: Large, medium Software: Revit, Autocad, Rhino, 3ds Max Description: Reacting to current mixed-use development problems all over the world and especially in China, this project was is an attempt to rethink the way commercial centres function in cities. Instead of massive, introverted shopping centres, Nantong Business Incubator seeks for more human scale in a mixed use development. Flexibility of a pixel and attention to public space help to design an urban environment that react to the context whilst creating high quality urban life. In terms of space, function, program, scale and circulation, the project creates diversity and richness and, furthermore, makes Nantong city more competitive and attractive.

VERTICAL VILLAGE By stacking units on top of each other the project recreates the human scale feeling of the former area while at the same time densifying it and making more cosy and lively open public spaces. PIXELATED VS HOMOGENEOUS By creating few separate pixelated volumes instead of one homogeneous block on site, we offer an alternative spatial experience in the context of Nantong.
8.5 M
FORMER BUILDING SCALE The former buildings’ scale in the site had an attractive size for a lively environment. We propose to use those dimensions as a metaphorical reference in our design. FLEXIBILITY OF THE GRID The spaces designed in the 8.4x8.4m grid that can be easily adjusted or combined in a most practical way in order to cope with the needs of the user. This grid is also most efficient for underground parking. 14

The museum acts as an urban connector in a place where two urban grids merge into each other. The intersection of the grids of the city and the harbor is marked by the volume of the museum. The program is divided clearly into the vertical volume and the plinth. 4 levels of generous exhibition spaces ensure extreme flexibility, curatorial freedom, and specificity of the space. The arrangement of programs in the plinth is a free plan: facilities are freely distributed on the ground floor, creating diverse in-between spaces among them.

According to the regulation, it is allowed to build only 4 floors of residential housing on site. The project proposes to build 3 additional floors underground for commercial facilities and parking. The public programs, including shops, services, an oceanographic museum, a hotel and a miniland park are concentrated near the waterfront.
The residential buildings are provided with good views towards the Ocean on the top of the site. There are 3 different residential typologies: apartment buildings, luxury villas and blocked houses. All different target groups could use an Ocean club building and the Marina at the end of the peninsula.

Description:
Cinema yard
The former cinema ‘Lithuania’ is a building of Soviet modernism. The building itself has caused many conficts over different parties within the civil society of Vilnius. To preserve or to demolish? The project emphasizes the following aspects: Old - the project opens historically valuable ‘Vingrių’ water springs for society in the proposed park design. Modern - Style of Soviet Modernism and it’s functionality is respected thus adding a new function of Modern Art Centre. New - Contemporary approach to the urban context while respecting and evaluating existing conditions. 26

Different typological zones of Panevėžys
Description: Due to its’ expansive development from a compact structure towards and increasingly dispersed one while the population is shrinking, the city of Panevėžys is becoming more expensive to maintain. There are many signs that the majority of urban changes taking place since the early 1990s are moving the post-socialist city away from sustainability. Instead of developing strategies based on massive growth that are unlikely to happen, the main concern of the thesis was on exploring ways to consolidate the existing structure to achieve better operations and more responsive services.
Strategies were developed of how to bring people back to urbanity, find compact city form by consolidating existring structure and create urbanity that would cross different structures. A pilot project of the new urban development concept includes a new system of public spaces, formation of quarters with public, residential and commercial functions. A new square that adopts to different altitude levels and has underground parking spaces is designed together with an auditorium and hospitality services near the river.

Description: The Xiangmi Park is to become a high quality urban space in the heart of Shenzhen. The park is very important for the local community as a green wedge, that provides some breathing space for increasingly more dense environment. However, the huge potential of the site is not fulfilled yet since the park was occupied mostly by informal activities and was not comprehended as a high quality urban place. 38
| Ignas Rackauskas | Selected Projects
The classical ‘green’ masterplan would not solve all the issues of the site and the approach should rather start from the strategy of how to fulfil the different needs of users and define the places of highest public interaction. Therefore, our design emphasized the identification and evaluation of valuable elements of the park that could embody the local history and conditions the best and provide a meaningful experience for its visitors.

CONSOLIDATING THE PUBLIC SPINE BY NEW PROGRAM
FORMING CIRCULATION FOR DIFFERENT TRAFFIC
Areas where functions intervene create a continious urban spine for main public circulation. New pedestrian and car entrances are offered to fully integrate the intersections to the surrounding urban tissue.
Different public clusters react to the needs of Xiangmi park and reflects the requirements of public opinion. Emphasis is put on Agricultural science experience cluster, Cultural and Leisure cluster for commerce and recreation.
New buildings are proposed in the public space where different functional areas intervene and various users interact. New program consists of the Wedding hall, Agriculture, science and flower Expo, service and management pavillions.
The cars could only access to the border of the Park. The users should park their cars and continue to the primary pedestrian / bicycle path in the public spine or secondary pedestrian paths inside the activity areas.

CREATING HYDROLOGICAL ECOSYSTEM
Water is collected by a network of canals on the hill and the roofs of the building structures. Then it is stored and purified in the Science experience cluster and reused for farming irrigation and domestic needs.
Sustainable systems WASTE AND ENERGY ECOSYSTEM
Organic waste is collected and stored in the Science experience cluster where it is transformed to gas and fertilizers for the farming. Solar panels, wind turbines and Geothermal systems are used in different clusters to collect energy. Rain water is reused for aquatonic farming.

LOOP school SOCIETY PARTICULAR Location: Milan, Italy GFA: 400 m2 Phase: open competition Date of submition: 2014 01 Personal contribution: Design team, presentation material Project type: Architecture Scale: Medium, small Software: Rhino, 3ds Max, Autocad, Adobe CS Description: The site of the pavillion is ‘hiding’ in the corner of the park, with three sides of the site currently completely closed. An external loop is proposed to better connect the site with the garden, allowing public to go through the site and making the park experience continuous. The external loop creates different experiences and relationships to the pavillion, integrating the public and the pavillion users. A front garden in the south of the site is proposed for outdoor activities. Defined by the canopy from the cantilevered first floor, the area is protected from intense summer sun and heavy rain.

Description: The site is in a suburban area of Panevėžys in Lithuania. The client was interested in building few blocks of residential single family houses and then selling them. The task was to offer him different layouts of 1-2 floor houses that would be unified by material and similarly sloped ‘Italian’ roofs. The projects were prepared in detail design technical project stage. The interesting aim to build the whole block is being successfully carried out and is already half-way built. 6 houses from 12 are standing and were sold to families.

SQ Restaurant SOCIETY PARTICULAR Location: Beijing, China Phase: DD, schedulled for construction Date of submition: 2015 03 Personal contribution: Designer, drawing set, diagrams & visuals Project type: Architecture, interior design Scale: small Software: Revit, Autocad, Rhino, 3ds Max Description The design draws on the rugged history of the Siheyuan, along with wider context of Beijing to create a calming atmosphere that is full of oblique references and layers of interest. Zones within the space were created to allow for a change in ambience, from early evening cocktails in the garden seamlessly adapting to a busy dining hall hosting creative savouries. EVENT GARDEN A pavilion made of corten frames the outline of the neighbouring rooftop, presenting a new dynamism to the banality of the garden and concentrated attention over the tranquil wall. COURTYARD As a connector of three dining rooms of the restaurant, the conservatory withstands classic siheyuan circulations in a truly relevant, contemporary and respectable manner. 44
