With the World Cup in Brazil fast approaching we take a look at who we think the upcoming stars of the tournament will be...

Neymar (BRAZIL) One of the hottest properties in world football. At just 21 years old, Neymar is a proven goal scorer. The Barcelona player is always attracting interest from rivials Chelsea and Real Madrid and many are tipping Neymar to be Brazil’s star at the World Cup. Born: February 5, 1992 Mogi das Cruzes, São Paulo, Brazil Full name: Neymar da Silva Santos Júnior Current team: FC Barcelona (11/Forward)

Ross barkley (ENGLAND) Barkley burst onto the scene with a series of eye-catching displays during the 2013-14 season, quickly becoming the centre piece for Roberto Martinez's attractive new Everton side, with his quick feet, positive striding runs and willingness to shoot from distance. He made his international debut in a World Cup qualifier against Moldova in September 2013 and he just could be Roy Hodgson's secret weapon in Brazil?

04

Marco Reus (GERMANY) After the recent revolution of young world class German players coming through, Marco Reus is yet another to come fresh off the German production line. A regular in the Borussia Dortmund team, Reus has become one of the German national side's biggest stars.

IGNITION MAGAZINE Powered by Groupauto

Javier Hernandez (MEXICO) Hernandez was a stand-out performer for Mexico at the World Cup in South Africa. After a tremendously impressive first season in the Premier League with Manchester United, Chicharito continues to go from strength to strength.

Kevin Strootman (NETHERLANDS) Strootman is a highly touted defensive midfielder who plays for Italian Serie A club Roma. His performances have led to him receiving a number of admirers including a certain Sir Alex Ferguson. Since the Oranje's ill-fated Euro 2012 campaign, the 24 year-old has become a regular in the Dutch eleven and is a fans' favourite due to his calmness in possession.

Luis Suárez (URUGUAY) Luis Alberto Suárez Díaz is a Uruguayan footballer who plays for Premier League club Liverpool. His club form this season has been nothing but sensational. Suárez will be the real danger man when England face Uruguay in the Arena Corinthians, Sao Paulo, on June 19th.

James Rodríguez (COLOMBIA) James Rodríguez is a strong and explosive forward who plays for French club AS Monaco. The 22 year-old is considered to be one of the biggest talents from South America and will be a big player to watch for Colombia.

Stephan El-Shaarawy (ITALY) The young forward burst on the scene for AC Milan this season and has scored a number of league goals in his first full season for his club. El-Shaarawy could prove to be a real threat alongside strike partner Mario Balotelli at Brazil 2014.

Isco (SPAIN) A bright midfielder who has put in some eye-catching performances in the Champions League for Real Madrid. The youngster is considered to be one of Europe's biggest young talents and is destined to have a bright future within the game.

eden hazard (BELGIUM) This brilliant Belgian is part of a very exciting crop of players in the Belgium national team, including Vincent Kompany and Marouane Fellaini. After some fantastic performances for Chelsea in the Premier League this attacking midfielder is bound to be a star at this year’s World Cup.

World Cup of Beer Brazil 2014 The only way to decide is by holding a World Cup of Beer! The top beers battle it out to be crowned the winner of the World Cup of Beer. Please... always drink responsibly.

Brazil 2014 is set to be a wonderful spectacle, and what better way to watch the competition unfold than with a crisp cold beer in hand? But just which beer should you choose?

Brazil

Mexico

Spain

Netherlands

Brahma Chopp

Corona

San Miguel

Heineken

This Brazilian beer will be enjoyed by plenty this summer. Can Brahma ‘Chopp’ down the other contenders? Every team needs a hard worker, even if it’s not always pretty. Could be stronger, but still a great player... Fernandinho?

Corona is the only beer that actually tastes better with lime. Ideal for a sunny summer in front of the telly, or better yet, during your pre game BBQ! A great finisher, Corona can sneak up on you and is one to watch - a lot like Hernández!

When you think of Spain, you think of holidays and San Miguel! This strong golden lager is best enjoyed ice cold and in the sun. Strong, but lacking the subtleties of its competition , a great player nevertheless - Alvaro Negredo.

Heineken is the official partner of the UEFA Champions league, and no beer is more synonomous with the beautiful game, a lot like Robin van Persie. Sheer class, great skill and a cracking finisher. A great beer to have in your arsenal.

England

Italy

Belgium

USA

Carling

Peroni

Stella Artois

Budweiser

Britain’s most popular beer, Carling is football through and through. It definitely has the heart, but lacks the technical abilty to match the other nations. The James Milner of beers, often overlooked, but always essential.

So Italian, Peroni is tasty and refreshing - whilst it is a little bit upmarket, it can still challenge for the cup. Peroni has class, style and a wealth of experience, sound familiar?... Peroni is definitely the Pirlo of the Beer World Cup.

Strong, fiery and immensely talented... Stella couldn’t be more like the Belgium national team if it tried. A real exciting prospect and a strong front runner for cup. The Vincent Kompany of the lager world, Stella stands a great chance.

A real no brainer, Budweiser is undoubtedly USA’s best player. Strong, crisp and seems to have been around for ever Tim Howard in a nutshell. There are no easy draws in the World Cup of Beer, can USA provide a shock result?

IGNITION MAGAZINE Powered by Groupauto

GAVIN VISITS IGNITION HQ WITH HIS TITLE BELT FOR POST-FIGHT QUESTIONS ApprovedGarages.co.uk sponsor the super-bantamweight champ gavin mcdonnell. we met with the doncaster born boxer in the weeks leading up to his fight. Gavin did not disappoint his sponsors as he claimed the British Super-Bantamweight title, with a thrilling sixth-round stoppage win over Leigh Wood live on Sky Sports. In the weeks leading up to the fight Ignition magazine got the chance to spend time with the champ during his 12 week training camp. The relentless regime during this period would be enough to put anyone off but for Gavin he manages to fit this in whilst working as a plasterer. As we sat talking to him whilst enjoying a biscuit with a cup of tea Gavin was tucking in to his cucumber slices and tomato. “That’s the hardest thing, food!” mentioned Gavin. “Small portions and all super healthy so I can lose the weight and keep in shape leading up to the weigh in.” After a tough start to the fight Gavin McDonnell suddenly turned it around with a fantastic sixth-round barrage of punches which forced

the referee to intervene and hand Gavin the British title. Gavin’s twin brother Jamie, a former British champion, was at ring side donning his Approved Garages hoodie and cheering his brother on. They are the first identical twins to win the Lonsdale belt. Wood started well, but McDonnell gained a foothold in the fourth round, catching his opponent with perfectly timed crisp punches. In the fifth it was an evenly contested round and both men fought hard, but at this stage Wood was ahead on the scorecards. When the bell rang for the sixth-round McDonnell stepped up his assault, dazing Wood with a relentless barrage of punches. The referee Marcus McDonnell (no relationship to Gavin, honest) briefly halted the attack to check on Wood, but once returning to the middle of the ring to face Gavin’s flurry of punches the referee was forced to finish.

vin

Explain the feeling you had when the referee stepped in and you realised you were champ? “It was an unbelievable feeling it’s hard to explain the emotions I felt. It makes all the hard work worthwhile. Famous fighters have sent me messages saying that the feeling lives with you forever!”

After weeks of ‘food hell’ what did you eat after the fight? “Me and my girlfriend Sophie went back to our hotel room and virtually ordered the whole menu. Pizza, chicken bites, cheesy chips, Pringles, you name it! My pal came over with a big tub of Celebrations and we demolished the whole lot. I felt so sick, I only slept a couple of hours but the great thing was, I didn’t feel guilty!”

What’s next? “I switch off a bit for a few weeks and enjoy time with my girlfriend and new born son. Plans are to get back in the ring early June for a title defence.”

Check out the full Q&A with Gavin on the next page

www.groupauto.co.uk/ignition

9

Q1: We see that your twin brother, Jamie is here, how much does he help with your training? I spar with him. Sparring with my brother is good, he’s got a good stone on me and you can really feel it in his punches. Leigh Wood has fought at higher weights, but I can’t see him being bigger than me, he might think he’s big but I’m massive for this weight. Q2: Closer to the fight do you put on much weight? Yeah, a stone. I’ll bring my weight down gradually up until the fight, that’s the hardest thing about it. You’d laugh at how little my portions are. It’s a joke, I’ll have half a chicken breast and broccoli, or 1 egg scrambled. If I had a good meal now I’d put on 4 or 5 pounds! I have to do that for 10 weeks, by the time of the fight I’m sick to death with rabbit food! After the fight I’ll be eating all sorts. Q3: You mentioned that your brother helps with your training, but how much does sibling rivalry factor into your training? It motivates me to outdo him, whatever we do. When we spar, we spar. We knock lumps out of each other, it’s crazy. You wouldn’t think we were brothers. Q4: What do your parents think about that? They love it! One minute they side with me, the next time it’s him, whoever’s in the good books. Q5: You’ve only been a pro for 3 years, how have you managed to get to where you are now? It’s been about 3 and a half years, only a short space of time. It’s been proper grafting, and plus I’ve always been compared to our kid, so I put a little bit extra in. I’ve learnt just that little bit quicker, I want to be compared to my brother in a good way. Q6: What’s your typical training routine? I train in the morning at about 7.30am, warm up, hit the pads, go on the bike and skip. Then I’ll have something to eat. Then it’s up to the local baths, to do about 30 lengths, steady away. Or I’ll do a long run at dinner time, about 5 or 6 miles at a good pace, or some sprints up the hill. Then in the evening it’s back to the gym for sparring, some circuits or some weights. I usually have to fit all of that around work, but my last two fights I’ve taken 10 weeks off. I’ve got to rest and relax to prepare properly. Q7: What’s the best way to relax? I just sit and watch telly, I’m not a computer man me. I like DVDs and going to the cinema with our lass. That’s hard though because there’s sweets and popcorn, our lass will get popcorn and my hand starts dipping in. If I’ve had a good week, I’ll treat myself to bag of sweets. Q8: How do you mentally prepare yourself for a fight? I just run it through my head. I go through it all and try to get the nerves out by thinking about it. I try to bring them nerves on when I’m lying in bed. You can’t sleep, and the adrenaline gets going. So I just wean it out gradually, when I’m on my runs I visualise the fight and how it might go. Q9: What music helps you prepare? I swap my music all the time, whatever’s out at the time. A lot of fighters – like my brother, keep the same music. Whatever takes my fancy, but its got to be upbeat, something that gets me going. Q10: You’re both Yorkshire fighters, and it’s a Yorkshire venue, will the crowd have an impact? He’s sold a few tickets and so have I. You can hear when you catch them, but it’s mainly just tunnel vision during the fight. Q11: Jamie was at ringside shouting plenty of encouragement, does it help? Massively, he doesn’t have to say anything it’s just knowing he is there gives me comfort and adds to my confidence.

Power MAxed Racing driver

Chris Stockton How excited are you to be back in BTCC? It is the culmination of many years hard work, we have wanted to be back for so many years but wanted to wait until we had the right formula, we’ve got a great team, a phenomenal car, some brilliant sponsors, so we are ready to take the season by storm, so in a nutshell, extremely excited. If you could own any car, what would it be? I think it would have to be a Bugatti Veyron purely for the speed. I can’t get enough of the adrenalin and the pure rush of acceleration. They are perhaps a bit too showy for me but boy can they go. How do you prepare for a race and do you have any pre-race rituals? I need time alone, I sit in the race truck office with some telemetry and just have some time out. Race weekends are hectic from the TV interviews to meeting and spending time with sponsors and fans. In terms of ‘rituals’, I don’t pull one leg of my race suit on or anything like that, I am a believer in the combination of talent and preparation rather than superstition. What is the biggest accident you’ve had? It was when I raced in Legends, I decided to go round the outside of a bunch in front of me battling, all went well until their tussle spilled onto my side of the track and pushed me wide, long story short, the car settled after going end over end 7 times. Needless to say there wasn’t much of the car left after that and I had a slightly sore head for a few days, no broken bones though.

ab btcc

How did you get into racing? I was a Jockey for over 10 years, I loved the speed and adrenalin rush but 10 years of extreme weight control is tough. I found motor racing gives me the same thrills but allows me to eat more than 1000 calories a day. What song best describes your work ethic? Not sure any song sums up my work ethic but I think my anthem for this year is going to be AC DC - Back in Black, back in the BTCC and back in a mean, black Chevy Cruze, thanks to the team at Power Maxed Racing. Touring Cars has a die-hard following of fans, what’s the most outrageous thing a fan has done that you know of? Well that would be telling, one has to maintain a certain amount of discretion, I will allude to being asked to sign a young ladies décolletage.

The 2014 car prior to livery

How does LeMans compare with Touring? They are so different it’s difficult to directly compare, Le Mans is such an event, steeped in history and such a grand affair, but the BTCC is in my blood, it’s the top level of British motorsport. In terms of the race, the endurance element of Le Mans is grueling but the BTCC is so full on you can barely blink during a race.

The Trusted Network

Approved Garages

Quickfire Round: What does your network offer the independent workshop?

agn and ab btcc

Approved Garages offers a credible, quality network, that independent garages can be proud to be a part of. Being part of GROUPAUTO and having the backing of the leading parts manufacturers in the UK means we have the marketing budget to reach the general public with great effect. We are a business generator, and in 12 months we have created over 19,000 leads for our garages. Transparency is the key, and our garages are able to view their own statistics at any given time, so they can see how many internet searches they’re appearing in, how many people have viewed their webpage, and how many enquiries they have had. Garages are allocated their own traceable telephone number, so when they get a telephone enquiry from someone who has found them on the website they know straight away where the customer has come from. If they are too busy to answer the phone, or if the call is out of opening hours, the call is handled by our call centre who then relay the message to the garage. In addition to this we also offer our garages discounted services for commercial insurance, workwear, business services and more, all designed to save the garages money.

What criteria do garages have to meet to become part of the network? Every garage has to be approved by a GROUPAUTO member, who are our “eyes and ears on the ground”. On top of this we also enrol every garage with Motor Codes for free, which gives us the secondary safety net of the RAC inspection every two years and commitment to a strict code of conduct.

How do garages sign up to the network? Garages interested in signing up to the network can visit signup.approvedgarages.co.uk to register an interest, and we will then contact them to arrange a full presentation, alternatively they can contact their local GROUPAUTO parts supplier to find out more.

CLASSIC April fools The BBC and the spaghetti trees An oldie but a goodie, this hoax dates back to 1957, when the Beeb produced a fake three-minute Panorama documentary about Swiss spaghetti trees. At the time, spaghetti was something of a delicacy and not widely eaten in the UK. Therefore, many fell for the story, about a Swiss family and their spaghetti-sprouting trees, with some calling and asking how to grow their own. http://youtu.be/GXmaS1ZzpA8

The Left-Handed Whopper Burger King published a full page advertisement in the April 1st edition of USA Today announcing the introduction of a new item to their menu: a "Left-Handed Whopper" specially designed for the 32 million left-handed Americans. According to the advertisement, the new whopper included the same ingredients as the original Whopper (lettuce, tomato, hamburger patty, etc.), but all the condiments were rotated 180 degrees for the benefit of their left-handed customers. The following day Burger King issued a follow-up release revealing that although the Left-Handed Whopper was a hoax, thousands of customers had gone into restaurants to request the new sandwich.

Flying Penguins On 1 April 2008, the BBC announced that camera crews filming near the Antarctic for its natural history series ‘Miracles of Evolution’, had captured footage of penguins taking to the air. It even offered a video clip of these flying penguins, which became one of the most viewed videos on the internet. Presenter Terry Jones explained that, instead of huddling together to endure the Antarctic winter, these penguins took to the air and flew thousands of miles to the rainforests of South America where they "spend the winter basking in the tropical sun." http://youtu.be/9dfWzp7rYR4

BRAZIL*FEIJOADA A slow-cooked hearty black bean and pork stew packed full of soulful flavour. Perfect for when you’re too busy watching the footie and have no time to keep an eye on the cooking. Get it on the cooker when the footie starts and dinner will be ready for when it ends!

ARGENTINA*GRILLED STEAK If you ever needed an excuse to break out the barbie this is it. The steak is simply cooked over a wood grill, but what really makes it authentically Argentinian is the beautifully zesty Chimichurri sauce. It’ll make you dribble more than Messi does with his left foot.

GERMANY*OKTOBERFEST HOT DOGS Elevating the humble hot dog to new heights this modern mix delivers an unexpected twist to a classic. If you find yourself short on time and late for the footie this dish will hit the spot, and what better to wash it all down with than an ice cold beer. Lederhosen is an optional extra but strongly advised!

SPAIN*PAELLA Rich in flavour and textures this iconic Spanish dish comes in many different variations. But if none of these tickle your fancy you can always make up your own version, adding in what you like‌ not totally dissimilar to the Spanish formation.

A World Cup is more than just football. four years is a long time to wait, but it’s always worth it. It’s not just the wonderful skill on display, or the world’s best players that capture our imaginations...the iconic kits, boots and balls are a major reason why we love the World Cup.

Adidas Diamant Bobby Moore’s World Cup winning boots. Truly iconic, the simple yet timeless design cemented adidas at the forefront of boot design.

Copa Mundial The top selling boot ever for adidas, Copa Mundial is Spanish for ‘World Cup’, and is a fully fledged World Cup classic.

Nike Mercurial Vapor Superfly Sported by many of the top players around, these Nike beauties were a real breakthrough in boot technology and innovation.

Football clobber has come a long way, from the steel toe capped boots and lead weight leather pig skins, to the brightly coloured synthetic slippers and the lightweight multipanelled balls of nowadays. We’ve taken a look at some of the best ever trendsetting World Cup features.

Tango Sheer excellence. The Tango could be one of the best looking World Cup balls to date.

Teamgeist Berlin This special gold version was unveiled for the infamous Zidane and Materazzi final. Slightly overshadowed by the bizarre events, but a great ball nonetheless.

Telstar The first black and white 32 panel ball to be introduced at a World Cup. A real breakthrough.

Predator Accelerator

Slazenger Challenge

Possibly the greatest ever ‘Predator’ boot, the Accelerator was pioneered by some true greats...Zidane, Del Piero and Beckham to name a few.

England’s lucky charm. We won the World Cup using this classic 18 panel pig skin.

Guess the year... Can you correctly identify which World Cup each of these classic kits featured in?

West Germany Lothar Matthäus led West Germany to their third consecutive World Cup final in this classic kit. The Germans have a knack of producing some of the finest gear, and their national footie kit follows suit. The striking pattern juxtaposed with the stark white and simple emblem works a treat.

Brazil Simple, yet effective. The iconic yellow shirt teamed with the blue shorts and white socks worked almost as well as the best Brazil side ever to wear it. As famous a World Cup as there’s ever likely to be, remembered fondly - not just for the footballing display, but the timeless kits too.

Argentina “The Hand of God”, two equally astonishing moments made this World Cup. and the man behind both moments - Diego Maradonna. The England players and officials were too busy gawping at that smashing shirt, rather than focusing on Diego’s feet and fist. Baby blue and white stripes - still one of the best combos around.

England Gazza endeared himself to a whole nation by balling like a child when he received the yellow card, which would have ruled him out of a potential World Cup final. The card turned out to be immaterial, but the moment of sheer emotion from Paul Gascoigne will be remembered forever...and so will the iconic shirt he was wearing at the time.

Netherlands In an instant ‘total football’ was introduced by Cruyff, with a mesmerising turn that defined Netherlands’ World Cup. Holland are undoubtedly the best team to never win a World Cup, their kit on the other hand, would definitely take the title as one of the best ever World Cup kits. The fact that Cruyff revolutionised football wearing it, is a fitting tribute.

Silence Racing

Caleb McDuff In January 2008, Caleb was born a hearing child. Unfortunately, at 2 years old, it was discovered that after a series of ear infections Caleb had lost 90% of his hearing, and was diagnosed as profoundly deaf. Caleb very quickly developed an excellent understanding and use of sign language as his primary form of communication. In 2011 Caleb was lucky enough to be selected to be surgically implanted with two Cochlear Nucleus implants. Paired with his Cochlear Nucleus 5 sound processor, and years of hard work, Caleb now has access to the world of sound, and is working hard to learn spoken language. Since Caleb was 18 months old, he showed a love for cars, in particular

Ferrari. He liked to spend his days driving electric powered cars, and dad Ian would often take him out and walk for miles until the battery ran out. Caleb is a car fanatic!

and learning to adapt other senses, such as engine vibrations, and can also quickly exchange information when on track through sign language and hand gestures.

As soon as Caleb could reach the pedals, he had his first drive of a petrol powered Go Kart, and since then has had a dream of being the first deaf Formula 1 driver. Whilst many will believe a disability can stop you achieving your dreams, Caleb has an ‘of course I can’ attitude.

The first step of the ladder to Caleb achieving his dream lies in the 2014 Bambino Kart Championship. Caleb is ready to enter the Championship, and ready to begin his dream journey. Unfortunately, as with all forms of motor sport, the financial costs are high, and this is where we hope sponsors can help.

As with all Kart racers, Caleb must wear a protective crash helmet when racing, which requires the removal of his sound processors. This means that when Caleb is racing, he does so without any noise input at all, in complete silence. Caleb is quickly turning this to his advantage,

Caleb’s story of his determination, and

What can Caleb offer his sponsors? his dream to be the first deaf Formula 1 driver first went public in December 2013 via his Facebook page Silence Racing – Caleb McDuff, set up by Dad Ian McDuff, who is the owner of French Auto Solutions, an AutoCare and Approved Garage in Wales.

Via Twitter @SilenceRacing, Caleb has attracted the attention of several British Touring Car drivers, NASCAR and Indy Car drivers, employees of Formula One Administration and many other organisations, as well as followers from around the world.

Within days the story was picked up by Gwent newspapers Free Press and South Wales Argus. From there the story has spread very fast, and to date Caleb’s story has appeared on ITV Wales News, a Spanish news channel for the deaf, in many articles on general websites, motor sport and Formula 1 specific websites, as well as specialist magazines and newspapers aimed at the deaf and hearing communities alike.

The media coverage did not stop there. Several news agencies have been in touch, and projects started to get Caleb’s story into national newspapers and magazines. As a result Caleb’s amazing story has now reached a global scale, with well wishes received from supporters in Europe, the Americas, Japan and Australia. Caleb is seen as a huge inspiration to people all over the world, from a very diverse background.

Any organisation that wishes to support Caleb and be part of his exciting journey can be assured that they will receive great media coverage in return. With various sponsorship packages available, you can be sure your organisation will reach a national audience with logo placements available on Caleb’s web page, race wear and race kart as well as social media coverage via Facebook and Twitter. There really is a package available to suit all budgets. Where required, Caleb can also be available for photo shoots and interviewing to promote sponsors’ products or services further, subject to additional negotiation.

WORLD CLASS QUALITY COMMA BRAND

Every Comma PMO product is appropriate to its recommended application, and that allows Comma to back them all with a unique 100% compatibility guarantee Successful brands are a bit like successful people. They’re confident, competitive, keep themselves in shape, hang out with other successful types and have all the right connections. They know too that their appearance has to match their performance, so when the occasion demands, they’ll happily undergo a make-over to maintain and project an image that is contemporary and in tune with the times. That’s what Comma, one of the most successful and familiar brands in our industry has done recently following its acquisition by the giant – and very successful – Cosan Lubricants company which is based in São Paulo, Brazil. To celebrate, the bold new face of Comma gets its first run-out in an upgraded Performance Motor Oils (PMO) range that now includes two important new introductions to the portfolio, and extends the range’s coverage to 99% of the UK car parc across its 14 products.

30

The new arrivals are Comma Voltech 0W-30, a fully synthetic oil formulated to ACEA A5/B5 and covering 143,000 UK market application gaps for Volvo models; and Comma Pro-NRG 0W-20, a fully synthetic oil meeting the API SN & ILSAC GF-5/GF-4 specifications which closes over 115,000 UK market application gaps for Subaru, Scion and Toyota petrol and petrol-electric hybrid vehicles. Voltech comes in the 5 litre version of the strikingly modern new Comma PMO pack, while Pro-NRG debuts in a 4 litre version. Their introduction also coincides with a shake-up and re-alignment of the semi synthetics in the range. Mike Bewsey explains, “Comma has succeeded and survived by doing what it does best, focusing on serving the independent vehicle servicing sector and earning the confidence and trust of vehicle technicians. We believe we’ve

IGNITION MAGAZINE Powered by Groupauto

created something bold, modern and instantly recognisable as Comma. Just as importantly, we want people to recognise that the Comma brand symbolises world class quality and products that they can use with confidence.” Every Comma PMO product is appropriate to its recommended application, and that allows Comma to back them all with a unique 100% compatibility guarantee. In fact, every application recommendation Comma make on their website at wwwCommaOil.com – and the data includes Comma coolants and brake fluids as well as our engine and transmission oils – is guaranteed in this way.

An interview with Phil Gardner, PalmerSport Fleet Chief Mechanic Comma is Technical Partner to PalmerSport – a corporate driving event based in Bedfordshire (UK) which is widely regarded as the best of its kind in the world. As Technical Partner, Comma not only provides products (from engine lubricants, to brake fluid and screen wash), but it also provides guidance and advice on how those products can be used to get the best performance from the vehicles.

How many miles do the vehicles run on average?

What stresses are the Comma products put under?

You’re looking at around 15,000 miles per year and the miles are covered when the car is being pushed very hard, so the cars certainly get a real pounding over the course of the year.

I’d say the stress is about ten times greater than it would be on a normal road car, hence our high maintenance schedule, which ensures that we can stretch out the life of the engine. However it’s testament to the quality of the Comma products that they can withstand these sorts of conditions.

Phil, could you tell us what vehicles are on the fleet?

Fluid-wise, the Caterham is less extreme than say, a BMW M3. The wear and the demands on the M3 are quite severe. The Caterhams are still checked daily and their fluid levels are topped up fairly regularly, but it’s nowhere near as much as the M3.

We run a real variety of cars; we have BMW M3s, JP-LMs, which are two seater Le Mans cars, Ariel Atoms, Formula Jaguars, Caterhams and Land Rovers. We also run karts. As Technical Partner to PalmerSport, you use a great deal of Comma products in the workshop, could you give us a brief rundown of the product range? There’s a huge variety of Comma products that we have here, but the ones we use most often are engine oils, brake fluids, brake grease, screen wash, gearbox oils, diesel oils and auto transmission fluids. How many drivers do you deal with on a day-to-day basis? On a very busy day, we can be looking after around 120 guests from various parties – that’s pretty much our maximum capacity. What tests do the cars undergo after a run? After a day’s running, we bring all the cars back in to the hangar were we jack the cars up and check all of the corners. We also check all of the fluid levels to make sure they’re correct.

Are some cars more ‘demanding’ in terms of care than others?

How often would you say the cars are serviced and the fluids are changed? The M3s would generally have their fluids changed around every three to four months – more often than not, we’d change their engine oil, the differential oil and the brake fluid.

We know that using the correct viscosity of oil is very important – can you explain why? Because products like engine oil are now so advanced, using the wrong one can ultimately be very costly. If you were to use a viscosity which wasn’t suited to the vehicle, you’d see a significant increase in engine wear. How do you know which products are best suited to which cars?

You use a great range of Comma products across the fleet, what insight does Comma offer into product composition? As technical partner to us, we know that Comma is always on-hand to offer advice and insight into product composition where necessary. We have a long and successful relationship with Comma and its products, thanks to the consistently high quality of products and their ongoing support. We know that all of Comma’s products undergo rigorous testing programmes so we can use them with confidence and keep our fleet in prime condition.

In terms of engine oils, we follow what is best as per the manufacturer requirments. We also work closely with Comma as their product knowledge is second-to-none and their application guide outlines all vehicles’ product requirements. The same is true of gearbox oils, while brake fluids, coolants and other chemical products are used across the board.

BACK TO

REALITY Over the years we’ve turn to sci-fi to fuel our imagination for the future. we’ve seen flying cars, ray guns, time travel and more. But what has actually made the leap from Sci-fi into reality? Sci-fi has inspired technology for many years and some scientific research has inspired technology in films. Spielberg actually consulted fifteen experts on predicting a feasible future for 2054 prior to making ‘Minority Report’ and some of those technologies are already with us.

Here we look at some of the amazing technologies that have been fully realised, as well as those that are under development. Still wish you could control your computer while looking like you’re conducting an orchestra? It’s not as far-fetched as you may think.

TABLETS Tablet computers were once a super advanced technology to marvel at, but now they are as common as a chav downing a bottle of white lighting. Making it’s appearance in the film 2001 a Space Odyssey (1968)

MULTI GESTURE INTERFACE Microsoft revealed their next generation console last year with an impressive demo of their gesture control system. However the reality has somewhat failed to live up to expectation, a dumbed down final release has meant a lot of the

32

gesture controls shown have been dropped. Lets hope a software update in the near future will fix this. After all how cool would you look controlling your games by randomly waving your arms in the air? Actually, maybe not so cool on hindsight…

IGNITION MAGAZINE Powered by Groupauto

it’s a little scary to see how accurate Kubrick foresaw the future. People immursed into their own personal tablets even when eating. There’s nothing like a bit of family banter around the dinner table.

EXO SKELETON Although not quite up to Ironman standards the military have been particularly interested in developing exo skeleton technology to enhance soilder performance. It would allow them to carry heavier loads (bigger, badder weapons and wear heavier armour), as well as physically travel further without being exhausted. I know it’s not as exciting as jet packs and arc reactors but you need to start somewhere. Apart from military purposes exo skeletons have also been developed for medical reasons. CYBERDYNE have developed the HAL suit that can help in physical rehabilitation; by supporting the wearer and enhancing their physical strength. With these technological advancements it gives real hope for those affected by physical diabilities. However one major concern is… isn’t CYBERDYNE the name of the company that build the Terminator robots? And isn’t HAL the name of the super intelligent AI from 2001 a Space Odyssey? It’s all a bit foreboding!

AUGMENTED REALITY With an array of new eyewear hitting the market augmented reality is well… becoming a reality. Google Glass allows you to snap pictures, record video, find directions and even search the internet when linked up with your smartphone.

Not quite as useful as targetting a perps crotch to shoot at a distance à la Robocop , but hey you can’t have it all.

VIDEO CALLS Although it may be a mundane technology nowadays, video calls were once at the forefront of sci-fi communication technology. Now you can just turn to your smartphone or computer to enjoy calls just like our Star Trek friends. All we need

now is to invent teleporters, warp drives and phasers and we’ll be able to “explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life forms and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before” just like Kirky and his crew.

If it’s good enough for Ferrari... Success on the race track undoubtedly has a massive impact on sales in the showroom, but just how much of that intense pressure to be first past the chequered flag translates into direct benefits for your customers, over a lifetime of car ownership?

As always, the answer lies beneath the sleek and slippery lines of today’s F1 and GT cars. The quality and precision engineering that goes into the engine and chassis parts supplied to such famous marques as Ferrari is the reason why so much trust is placed in so few top tier parts suppliers. Take the case of MAHLE for example, one of just a handful of major manufacturers of engine components to have achieved the status of development partner to the Prancing Horse. By conferring its annual “Best GT Supplier Award” on this globally renowned parts supplier, Ferrari has recognised MAHLE for its long standing support with engines, focusing on technology, competitiveness and innovation. “Our suppliers and partners are essential to the results Ferrari achieves on the race tracks and roads all over the world” said Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo at the official ceremony in Maranello.

42

IGNITION MAGAZINE Powered by Groupauto

The engineering flair and attention to detail that Ferrari and other F1 teams rely on stems from MAHLE Motorsports plant at Fellbach near the company’s headquarters in Stuttgart, where pistons and other cylinder components for motorsport and high performance road cars are developed, produced and finished with special surface coatings to withstand the exceptionally high temperatures experienced when operating on the limit. And this same exacting process lies at the heart of MAHLE’s philosophy when it comes to producing its renowned range of premium quality filters, valves, pistons, bearings and other engine parts used by such diverse

brands as Audi, BMW, Ford, Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz, Peugeot and Toyota. Many suppliers now claim to provide “matching quality”, but it is what’s inside that counts. They are simply not the same as “original equipment” parts. So if you want to make sure you benefit from the best replacement parts, why not fit MAHLE air, oil, fuel and cabin filters the next time a car needs a service.

Our suppliers and partners are essential to the results Ferrari achieves on the race tracks and roads all over the world Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo

Many of them were aimed at children, some of them were quite terrifying, and some were hilarious, check out Joe & Petunia - BRILLIANT!

‘Charley Says’ – Strangers 1973 In 1973 the incomprehensible pronouncements from a ginger cat named Charley warned children against strangers, matches, water safety and other everyday perils.

http://youtu.be/KzWKK86rMTQ

The quirky ‘Charley Says’ animated series, with the warning growls ‘voiced’ by the late Kenny Everett, delivered often-stark messages in a darkly comic way. Created by Richard Taylor Cartoons, the garbled meows of the ginger cat were later sampled by UK dance act The Prodigy for the 1991 Top 10 hit ‘Charly’.

Joe & Petunia 1970 Cartoon couple Joe and Petunia appeared in a number of films starting in the late 1960s. Covering subjects such as the countryside code, the dangers of worn tyres and saving water, this film about the Coastguard was probably the best known.

http://youtu.be/mhViSakWVRw

Behaving in a way that is common to characters in many early public information films, they are utterly unaware of the dangers caused by, or around them, which are obvious to any onlooker.

Door Chain 1976 This film advising viewers that keeping a door closed and put the chain on before letting their visitor in. Featuring a modified version of the song Green Door this catchy little number had some colourful characters like a rich auntie, a real gone con man or a very un-pc portrayal of a mad axeman.

Lonely Water 1973 Warning children not to play near ‘dark and lonely’ water, a horror film style look and voiceover is used in this film to highlight the dangers. Juratek have once again teamed up with Stuart Oliver, to supply brake discs and pads for the 2014 season. Truck racing is simply one of the most unique forms of motorsport in the world, and are the real heavyweights of the racing world. Despite their weight and size, trucks are incredibly agile and are capable of rubber burning power slides, especially when blasting out of a hairpin!

THE TRUCK Race trucks are based on a road going tractor unit and compete without a trailer attached. In the early days of the sport during the mid 1980s, the majority of competitors were actually racing road-going trucks with only minor modifications. The winner of the very first UK truck race event at Donnington Park was an Italian truck owner who arrived with a fully loaded trailer on the Friday night, unhooked his trailer in the paddock, race his truck over the weekend, collected some trophies and on the Monday morning he was back on the road with his trailer to deliver his load. The sport has moved on a great deal over the past two decades and the trucks on the race tracks today are a far different from their road-going equivalent. As in every form of motorsport the main objective when building and preparing a modern day Race truck is to make it go faster than the others. Truck racing has acquired a portfolio of regulations that are implemented by organisations such as the FIA (the same body that governs Formula 1) these help to make it more equal for competitors as well as oversee the fitment and use of safety equipment such as approved roll cages, firefighting equipment, driver race seats, harness, flame resistant race suit and helmet. Due to the size and weight of a modern two axle race truck all the manufactures involved today acquire the 1,200 bhp plus, performance from a thirteen litre maximum size six cylinder inline diesel turbo intercooled engine, with a torque output of a staggering 5,000 newton metre, this power is transmitted via a manual shift gearbox into a locked rear drive axle. With a minimum dry weight of 5500kgs (3,300kgs on the front axle and 2,200kgs on the rear axle) this is enough to propel these machines from a standing start up to 60mph quicker than a Porsche 911, albeit the regulations only allow a maximum speed on track of 100mph (160km/h) this is controlled strictly by way of a sophisticated GPS tracking system.

The chassis has to comply with the regulations be of a C section the same as that of a production truck, a steel under sub-frame is added for rigidity, both axles have also to be available from any truck production line, the suspension has to be two point leaf type with three way adjustable dampers. To slow a 5,500kgs truck from 100 mph in racing style, at nearly every corner of a race track consistently on every lap during a 20 minuet long race the air brake system and brake components have to be of the highest standard, to assist and keep the performance over a full race duration each brake disc is internally sprayed with a fine mist of water to help to dissipate the enormous heat generation. One of the most common reasons for a truck retiring or crashing during a race is generally due to brake component failure!

THE Team Stuart Oliver born in July 1963 from Hexham in Northumberland is the team owner and driver, during his racing career he has been lucky to be supported by a dedicated group of people who have worked within the team since its formation back in 1998. During this time the team have achieved a record breaking number of championship wins no less than ten British Truck Race Championships, the FIA 2004 European Racetruck Championship title, the Chinese Truck Race Championship driver title in 2007/8, as well as the team with the fastest ever recorded time for a truck over the quarter mile at the world famous Santa Pod drag strip. Coupled with these Stuart has received numerous personal awards, the BARC Presidents Cup (twice), Tynedale Sportsman of the year (twice) and the world famous Nurburgring King of the Ring award in 2010.

Stuart has spent all his life in and around trucks and machinery after leaving school he trained and qualified as a heavy vehicle engineer then had a spell at long distance truck driving before moving into the driving seat of his family road transport and warehousing business, Stuart says his earlier years were a perfect education platform to line him up to become a truck race championship winner. His belief is "to finish first - first you have to finish" if you can see, hear or feel a problem before it develops you go a long way to having a 100% reliable truck. As well as the loyal team personnel TEAM OLIVER RACING's main sponsors and partners such as JURATEK (the teams preferred brake component supplier), KELSA Truck Components and MOTIS Shipping have all supported the team for a number of years. For the 2014 season the team have some very different and exciting plans to unveil that will without doubt cause concern in and around the race paddock!

THE Racing At the track the British Championship races are generally held over a weekend with two races on the Saturday and three on the Sunday. All the races start from a rolling lap in two plus two grid formation led behind a pace truck. All races are 15 minutes long plus a final one lap. To keep things spiced up each race start formation is a reverse of the finishing positions of the previous race ongoing throughout the year. This system is new to the championship and without doubt gives the spectators plenty of on track action to view.

50

The winner this time round will have the choice to take home a Suzuki S-Cross car, a Suzuki V-Strom 1000 motorcycle or a Suzuki ATV Quad. However, in addition to these fabulous prizes, the lucky winner will also have the chance to win a cash prize of £100K this time round.

IGNITION MAGAZINE Powered by Groupauto

The winner of the competition will be announced at the final round of the British Super Bike meeting at Brands Hatch on October 18th. The winner will then also be given the opportunity to predict the outcome of a race on the final day and potentially win £100,000. Runners up in the competition will receive thousands of pounds in holiday vouchers.

Tyco Partnership These exciting changes are announced at the same time that Dickies have agreed a new motorsport partnership for 2014, with Tyco Suzuki, one of the UK’s top BSB teams. Dickies branding will appear on the Tyco Suzuki team race bikes, transporters, pit garages, team clothing and riders leathers for the MCE BSB Championship as well as being the safety clothing provider for the marshals, timekeepers and medical teams of the BSB championship.

Last Years winner Quentin Willson, TV presenter and consumer and motoring champion said: “Worker of the Year is now a major UK workplace award and I'm really proud to have been a supporter and judge from the very beginning. It's great that past winners tell us the competition changes lives.” In 2013, Judi James, a farmer from Littlebreddy in Dorchester was crowned the fourth UK Worker of the Year at the awards evening at the Madejski Stadium in Reading, wowing the audience at last year’s gala event with her passion and drive for farming. “This competition has changed my life and the car will help me so much with my work. I would urge anyone who hears about the competition to have a go at entering or to nominate someone as an entrant. It costs nothing except a few minutes of time and those few minutes could prove to be incredibly worthwhile,” said Judi.

Maurice Morton, sales & marketing director at Dickies stated: “We are delighted to have partnered with Tyco Suzuki. With Suzuki’s involvement with UK Worker of the Year, it worked ideally for everyone concerned. Given the on-going uncertainty that the country faces economically, a feel-good initiative of this type is more important than ever to remind our nation’s work force that they have much to be proud of and look forward to. Our exciting changes to this year’s competition keep the UK WOTY competition’s on-going wow factor firmly in place.”

MIGHTY MIKE The world of darts has a new number one! Michael van Gerwen is the youngest ever world champ, and at just 24 years of age, he’s set to become one of the most successful darts players ever. We caught up with Michael and spoke about his sensational 2013, his future, and how he rates Holland’s chances at the World Cup! As predicted MvG has gotten off to a flyer in the 2014 Premiership of Darts, whitewashing Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor 7-0 on the opening night. If Michael keeps that sort of form up, you can bet on him retaining his Premiership title in 2014. Turn over for the full Q&A

www.groupauto.co.uk/ignition

55

What’s the best thing about being a pro darts player? And has becoming the World champ made a difference to your life?

First of all, congratulations on becoming the youngest ever World Champ, and the world number 1. How did you celebrate winning the 2014 World Championship? It was great of course, I didn’t have much time to celebrate that night because of doping control, which is a big part of the sport as well, so that took a bit of a while to get finished. After that I was so busy with all the newspapers and interviews. I had a great home welcome, about 3,000 people turned up, it was fantastic. You had an unbelievable 2013, was this victory all the more sweeter given your defeat in the final last year? Last year I lost the final, I know how it is to lose a big final and also how it is to win a big final – that makes me stronger and I worked really hard for this title and for the number 1 position. You’re also the reigning Premier League champ, how do you rate your chances of retaining the title? I’ve got a great chance. But, there’s top players in there, who can all win the tournament. You can never underestimate anyone. Darts isn’t really seen as a young person’s game, what attracted you to the sport and what advice would you give any youngsters wanting to give it a go? I started darts when I was about 12 years old. In England as well as Holland it’s cold in winter and you’ve got to look for things to do inside – I chose darts. I can remember my first youth tournament, I was 13 and came 3rd and I thought to myself “Hey, I’m good at something”. Becoming a pro takes a bit of luck, and a lot of support both money wise and sponsorships.

I’m now a famous player in a lot of countries around the world – and that’s good. That’s what comes with being the World Champion and I’m really enjoying it. You scooped 3 awards at this years PDC Darts awards including Fan’s Player of the Year and Player of the Year – how does it feel receiving that level of recognition for not just your talent, but your charisma and attitude to the game? It’s great to win the awards. I’m very glad to win the Player of the Year, because it’s not easy to win that one – you always have to deal with Phil Taylor and other great players! To win Fan’s Player with more than 40% of the vote really means a lot to me. So much was made of your talent as a rising star – do you feel you have reached your full potential? Or is there even more to come for Mighty Mike? Ahh, there’s still more to come. I know I can do better. I won the most important tournament this year, now the most difficult thing is to win them again, and stay no. 1 in the world, and that’s what I want to do. How much training goes into becoming a World Champ? A lot. But it’s not all about training, it is also about playing a lot of tournaments and making sure your game is ready. You can’t afford any mistakes. What would you say to those people who say darts isn’t a real sport? A lot of people say that, they say “you’re not a runner” and things like that, but I say “what is golf then?” I’ve seen golf players with a cigar and red wine riding round in buggies all day! What is sport?

“You can never underEstimate anyone” 56

What’s it like going from being a tiler, to a pro darts player?

Quick fire

The most important thing is that I don’t have to get up at 5am any more to go to work. I can live like a pro and make sure I’m ready for every tournament and not tired from working Monday to Friday.

Who is your sporting hero?

Are the British dart fans the best in the world?

That I’m doing very well on the circuit.

Every fan in the world is the best. I’m from Holland, I go to Scotland and England, loads of places, everywhere I go I enjoy it and they’re all really nice to me.

Where’s your favourite place to visit?

This edition of Ignition magazine is the World Cup special - how do you think your native Holland will fair at this year’s World Cup in Brazil?

Fishing, I love fishing.

They can do well…I think they can do better than England haha. We have a good team at the moment with Robin van Persie and Arjen Robben. I’m really looking forward to the World Cup, I’m a big football fan.

Michael Schumacher. What makes you happy?

Vegas! I’ve been there a couple of times. Do you have any hobbies?

What’s your most watched TV program? I don’t really watch much TV, I’m usually playing on the Playstation, on FIFA 14 or Call of Duty. What was the proudest moment of your life? Winning the world title of course.

Are you friends with any of the players? I speak quite a lot with Ron Vlaar. Will you be heading to Brazil to watch any of the games?

Images courtesy of Lawrence Lustig/PDC

I would, but I haven’t got time for that unfortunately.

Le Tour Yorkshire Yorkshire rider Scott Thwaites is fighting for a place on the upcoming Tour de France. He sat down with us to discuss his chances...

Scott grew up in the small village of Burley in Wharfedale near Ilkley, surrounded by the Yorkshire Dales; a great place to experience the outdoors. Growing up he played cricket and football at a competitive level before switching his attention to triathlon. A national title quickly followed and his success in this sphere led him to the sport of cycling. Although his initial interest was in cyclo-cross where he was fortunate to ride for Great Britain in several World Cups, European and World Championships.

I'm still young, but hopefully they will give me the opportunity as part of my development.

60

IGNITION MAGAZINE Powered by Groupauto

Scott then switched to XC mountain biking where he won another National title before riding in the Junior World Championships in Australia. The recent news that NetApp-Endura have been invited to race in the upcoming Tour de France could result in Scott competing in the greatest race in the world on his own doorstep, an exciting possibility that will give him extra motivation in the months ahead.

Where’s the best place you’ve been to compete or train? I really enjoyed racing in America last year at the Philly Cycling Classic because the crowds were crazy and it made a great atmosphere. Where are the best cycling routes in the UK? I would say in Yorkshire obviously! The quiet roads with nice climbs and great scenery make every ride enjoyable. How strict is your diet and training regime? I work with a coach who gives me a specific daily plan to follow to get me in the best condition for the most important races. I eat pretty healthy but there's always room for improvement on that front. How many miles do you ride in a typical day? I work on weekly totals and tend to do 400 - 500 miles a week. Your team – NetApp-Endura have recently been confirmed for the Tour, how do you rate your chances of being included? There are 21 riders on the team and 9 will ride the Tour so I have a fair chance of being on the start line. I'm still young, but hopefully they will give me the opportunity as part of my development. As a true Yorkshireman, how much would it mean to you to ride the Tour in Yorkshire? Taking part in one of the Worlds biggest sporting events is a great honour in itself and having the chance to do it on home roads is a once in a life time opportunity. What is the best thing about being a pro cyclist? Having a career in a sport that I love and would do anyway, even if I didn't get paid. And the worst? Having to train and race in really bad weather. The dangers of road cycling are numerous; do you ever find yourself scared by cycling? Not really because I always try to stay safe and having trained on the roads for years I have good awareness and bike handling skills. What is the highlight of your career so far? Winning the National Under 23 Championships in both mountain bike and road racing. What bike do you currently ride? It's a Fuji Altamira SL with shimano dura-ace components. How do you relax? I listen to music a lot when I'm travelling and at races but outside of cycling I enjoy a drink with friends to make me feel normal. Do you ever get tired of wearing lycra? Not really, it's the best thing to cycle in and it's something I'm used to now. If you weren’t a cyclist, what would be your dream job? I'd like to own a cafe. What advice would you give to anyone who is keen to get into cycling? Give it a go! Join up with a local club, getting out with other people makes it much more enjoyable. Ilkley

Ilkley is an idyllic Spa Town which will be hosting the Tour de France on the weekend of the 5th & 6th July. Ilkley is also where Scott Thwaites grew up and went to school,

I’d say the best place to watch the Tour would be at the start in Leeds, so you could get close to the riders. Alternatively, a place where the peleton will come past slower, so you can spot your favourite riders would be great too. Scott Thwaites

Harrogate and its surrounding market towns, stunning dales countryside, wealth of history and heritage make it an ideal place to end stage 1 of the Grand Dѐpart.

Leeds A great place to start the Tour, Leeds has loads to offer; shops, bars, restaurants and galleries, you’ll have plenty to do if you choose to watch the Dѐpart from Leeds.

Spain Sun, Sea & San Miguel

With average summer temperatures ranging between 24 and 30 degrees and only a two hour flight from most UK airports, it is easy to see why Spain is a hit with us British tourists. Whether you want to discover bustling cities, rural towns or just bask in the sunshine on the Costa del Sol, Spain (and her islands) has it all.

70

The locals are friendly, football is the national sport and they love beer, so it’s easy to see why we Brits love la vida espaùola.

European Paradise, Formentera The island of Formentera is actually Ibiza’s little sister, but it couldn’t be more different. In fact it is so different that you will wonder if you’re still in Spain! One of the last outposts of paradise left in Europe, the tiny island’s untouched coastline boasts miles and miles of natural sandy beaches and crystal clear turquoise waters. Peaceful and unspoiled, Formentera attracts tourists who want to relax in total seclusion, away from the crowds of the typical Mediterranean coastline.

Winter Escape, Tenerife Venturing slightly further afield (just over four short hours away by plane) is the Island of Tenerife. Set just off the coast of Africa in the Atlantic Ocean, the Tenerife sun shines all year round, making it a great destination if you’re looking for an early/late season deal to escape the ‘great’ British weather. Whether you’re heading for the lively sites of Playa de Las Américas or the more plush surroundings of Costa Adeje, Tenerife really does have something for everyone - great nightlife, excellent restaurants and a varied range of attractions for families, couples and even those travelling solo. One attraction not to be missed is the Siam Park Water Kingdom. Already established as one of the best water parks in the world, it has over 30 aquatic attractions, perfect for the young and the young at heart.

Luxury Break, Fuengirola Only 25km from Malaga Airport is the town of Fuengirola. This former fishing village has become a vibrant metropolis with character and is the perfect place to unwind. Sandwiched between Torremolinos and Marbella, it has up-market tapas bars, chic boutiques and an amazing five-mile long beach. Alternatively, stroll down the narrow, pedestrian streets to discover some of the hidden secrets, this Andalucian town has to offer.

Experience the City Life If you are looking for a short city break then travelling to Spain couldn’t be easier, accessible from just about every airport across the country you can fly to Spain for less than it would cost you to go to Jersey. Spain has some fantastic cities, famous all over the world for their cultural charm The country’s capital, Madrid, treasures a legacy of exciting history. It combines some of the most modern infrastructures with a large cultural and artistic heritage. Now a cosmopolitan and modern city set amongst beautifully maintained parks and garden, Madrid is still one of the greenest capitals in Europe. Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia. A Mediterranean and cosmopolitan city with some of the most beautiful examples of 20th century Modernism and avant-garde. Also the home of the Nou Camp, FC Barcelona’s home ground and the largest stadium in Europe.

The Party Island, Ibiza Laden with neon-lit bars, clubs and the world’s biggest dance floors, Ibiza’s legendary nightlife is home to a host of celebrity DJs and world famous clubbing venues. The Balearic Island sees tourists in their millions visit every year, to enjoy glorious sunshine and the golden sands, heaving with the beautifully trimmed beach bodies of Ibiza’s hedonistic party goers. If you’re not looking for a solid seven day party session, then surprisingly, you will find a quieter cusp of San Antonio Bay just a stones throw from the main nightlife; where many families and couples enjoy their holidays, what seems like a world away from the wild atmosphere of Ibiza’s West End.

FILM CAR CAPERS Some of the best funny car scenes from films in the last 25 years. These clips will make you laugh time and time again.

RAT RACE

ROAD TRIP

Scene: Hitler’s Car A truly funny scene where John Lovitz steals Hitler’s car, insults some butch lady biker and invades a World War II Veteran’s convention. Memorable line: “Hi, I really like your dyke, er bike.”

Scene: Broken Bridge If shortcuts were easy they would just be the way. This scene proves that point and just because someone is good at physics doesn’t make them an expert with cars. Memorable line: “Are you sure? ”Of course I’m sure, with physics I’m always sure, yes”.

BEWARE TERRIBLE RAPPING

DUDE WHERE’S MY CAR

Scene: And Then The scene at the drive-in is brilliant, it gets me everytime. Memorable line: “Annnd thennn?” “I refuse to play your Chinese food mind games.” “And then?” “No! No ‘and then’” 72

DUMB & DUMBER

NAKED GUN

Scene: Hitch Hikers With many hilarious moments in the famous dog car, this one is potentially the best. It has the added bonus of being one of the most annoying sounds in the world. Memorable line: “Radio, who needs a radio, ready Harry.”

Scene: Car Chase Following a bad guy, the student learns of an important gesture for a driver ‘flipping the bird’. The scene finishes with arguably the best death scene in a movie ever. Memorable line: “Now Stephanie, gently extend your arm, extend your middle finger... very good well done.”

G WARNIN MALE Y IT NUD

ANIMAL CRUELTY

HANGOVER

PLANES, TRAINS & AUTOMOBILES

Scene: Asian in Trunk of Car The guys think Doug is in the trunk, they open it and out jumps a flamboyant and naked Asian man ‘Leslie Chow’, who attacks them and runs off. At that point Alan admits that he spiked their drink with roofies. Memorable line: “You guna f**k on me?”

ANCHORMAN

Scene: Drunk Driver Driving on the wrong side of the road, what would a drunk know about directions? Memorable line: “Some joker wants to race” “Don’t race, that’s ridiculous” “Alright c’mon. Let’s go, let’s go.”

RUSH Competition

Scene: Ron Trashes a Chopper This scene is great and watching the dog being kicked over the bridge is wrong but very funny. Memorable line: “If you wanna throw down in a fist fight I got Jack Johnson and Tom O'Leary waiting right here for you.”
