: T O O H S & T POIN L THE INTERCONTINENTA BALLISTIC METRO ERS BY JONATHAN MOORE - SPEEDHUNT
I DROVE A METRO ONCE.
It was a horrible experience. A bit like driving a cross between a bus and a shopping trolley. It had the driving position of the former but the size and power of the latter. But despite this, the Metro is another car that I hold dear – and as usual it’s because of what a racing department did to an unsuspecting, innocent little shopping car. What Austin Rover Motorsport did was mate it to a Death Star, to create the Metro 6R4 Group B rally car. With its name a literally representation of its spec (six-cylinder, rally car, four-wheel drive), 30 years ago the 6R4 was part of the final wave of brutal Group B cars to tear up the world’s rally stages in the mid 1980s before the insanely dangerous series was banned. It emerged from the UK in 1984 alongside the Ford RS200 as a final and slightly late answer to the dominance of the French, Germans and Italians. Four-wheel drive was a given after Audi rewrote the rulebook with the quattro; power was the only question, with the answer being ‘all the power you can get’. The 6R4 would be rather different to Austin Rover’s last rally car, based on the wedge-shaped TR7. The Metro 6R4 was a hell of a thing to come up with in the face of what was out there, seemingly going against all the conventional wisdom. The wheelbase was tiny. The engine wasn’t turbocharged, instead a purpose-built 3.0-litre V6 with a Lucas Micos six point electronic fuel injection and ignition system that relied on torque over blown punch. The engine was in backwards (with the ‘front’ of the engine at the rear and the gearbox mid-mounted). The rear differential was mounted on the side of the engine, with a propshaft running through the sump. FACT: The Lucas Micos system is believed to be the first that electronically generated both the ignition and the solenoid injector control signals at 90/150-degree uneven firing intervals characteristic of a 90 degree V6. But despite this quirkiness, the 6R4 quickly became a feared opponent on the stages, and completely ruled on
the marketing front. It was the ultimate way to allow drivers of humble little Austin Metros, usually the lowest of the low on a road, for once to have something to be proud of, to be able to puff up their cheeks and go, “Hey Lancia driver, hey Audi driver: this car also competes in Group B.” Of course, there was barely any actual Metro in the 6R4 – this spaceframe, snub-nosed fighter used just the roof panel, and even then it was made of aluminium rather than the original steel. Homologation rules dictated a run of 200 cars were required, so Austin Rover set to work producing basic ‘Clubman’-spec cars to bang through the run. 20 more were taken by the factory and converted to full Group B spec: 500hp, 1,000kg beasts with a three second 0-60mph time. The Lucas liveried 6R4 pictured belongs to Andrew Cooper who enlisted the expertise of John Price Rallying the go-to experts for all things Metro and Renault 5 Turbo related – they reckon it’s one the best-sorted tarmac-spec 6R4s there is, as light and quick as anything out there – and they would know. This car was no stranger to John Price – he built it originally. As handy behind the wheel as with a spanner, he used this Metro to blitz tarmac rally events in the UK, becoming the most successful national sealed-surface driver in the process. He won four championships in this car alone – and 12 in total. Factory development on the 6R4 stopped when the Group B plug was pulled in ’86, and with the parts supply also drying up, tuners have gone their own way, using Clubman models as bases for cars which match and more often exceed period Group B power. Today the Lucas 6R4 can be seen tearing up historic rally stages throughout the UK. But now you and your customers too can find out what it feel like to sit in one of the fastest rally cars of all times. This car is available to hire for marketing events and track days.

Getting a tattoo is a big deal, after all they are permanent. Making sure you get a great piece of body art, rather than a lifelong regret should be top of your list when thinking of getting inked. IGNITION have put together a guide for getting tattooed, from start to finish.
1.
2.
Once you decide that you want to get a tattoo, you should begin your research. Find a style that you like and that will suit the idea you have. Most tattoo artists have a specific style that they specialise in, such as; Traditional, realism or Japanese etc. Instagram, facebook and friend’s recomendations should be your key tools when searching for reputable tattoo artists.
When you’ve found the right tattoo artist for the job, you should drop them an email, outlining your initial idea, positionng and size. You’ll have to be patient at this stage as most top tattoo artists have long waiting lists and may take a week or so to respond to your email.
4.
3. Your chosen tattoo artist may want to get you down to the studio for a consulation, to talk through your idea and suggest any alterations. It should be remembered that they are artists and their opinion should be respected, this should ensure you get the best possible tattoo. They will then book you in and most artists will also ask for a deposit.
After the booking has been made your artist will get to work on drawing up your design. Depending on the scale of the tattoo in question you may want to get a copy of the drawing and study it, to make sure you’re happy with design that will be on your body forever! Tattoos aren’t cheap, so it would be wise to get saving too!
5. When the day of your tattoo comes round, you’ll want to prepare yourself. Make sure; you’re not hungover, have had a shower and that you’ve had plenty to eat and drink. Don’t turn up late, or with an entourage, these are big no-nos. Tattoos hurt, anyone who says otherwise is lying! There are however certain spots on the body where it hurts more, like; the spine, ribs, neck and over bones. If you are worried about the pain, you could use a numbing cream. If the pain becomes too much to bear, make sure you let the artist know that you need a break, there’s no shame in tapping out, it sure beats passing out!
6. A lot of artists differ in opinion when it comes to aftercare, the best course of action is to take the advice of your tattoo artist. They’ll know how best to care for the tattoo - which will effectively be an open wound at the time! Keep the new tattoo dry and out of direct sunlight until it is fully healed. When it scabs... DO NOT PICK THEM, this will lead to scarring and ultimately ruin your brand new, very expensive, body art. Lastly...once it’s fully healed - enjoy your new tough sticker, it’s awesome! 14

CARS ENTERING THE WORKSHOP PEUGEOT RCZ CITROEN DS3
ADVICE AND SUPPORT FROM THE FOLLOWING SUPPLIERS:
20
Electric Windows: The DS3 owners report of electric window problems and is a common symptom of the electric window regulator failing. Timing Chain: The engine on the DS3 has known timing chain issues. If you can hear a loud rattling noise from the engine when it is running and when it is in a stationery position. This is usually an indication of a timing chain problem. This causes a loss of revs at high speeds or engine hesitancy when setting off.
to the system. Comma provides an online application guide to ensure you select the correct oil. Start-stop Battery: To initialise the Start-Stop system Platinum Batteries reccomend the vehicle must be left unused for 8 hours. This does not need to be done at the point of fitting a new battery, but can be done overnight. The Start-Stop system may not work until this action has taken place.
Low SAPS Oil: Failure to use the correct Low SAPS oil in this DS3 model may result in damage
Exhaust Heat Shield: A loud whining noise coming from the rear of the vehicle when driving at high speeds is usually caused by a loose exhaust heat shield. Vehicle Misfire: The RCZ are fitted with the 'Bi-Hex' design spark plugs offers a very secure grip for the correct socket on the plug, which if over-torqued can easily fracture the spark plug internally out of sight, leading to a vehicle misfire. NGK express that with any fixing, care must be applied to only use the correct torque when installing spark and glow plugs.
IGNITION MAGAZINE Powered by Groupauto
Battery Fitting: This takes approx. 18 minutes but before disconnecting the battery, close all the doors and windows, plus retract the rear spoiler. Turn the engine off and wait for 2 minutes. Platinum Batteries say It’s vital to fit the correct battery for the application. There are many instances where a battery of a lower specification or technology is fitted resulting in early service life failure.
The typical age of the most common vehicles entering the aftermarket is 5 years old. Independent garages must be up to speed with modern issues on these vehicles as parts problems often require specialist knowledge and equipment to resolve.
Oil Filter: The Golf 1.6 diesel engines use a filter and housing that is supplied to OE by MAHLE. It is designed to allow easy exchange of the filter during servicing with a patented design on the pin. This design allows easy location of the pin by automatically guiding it to the correct location. Due to the patented design elements, only the MAHLE filter locates automatically and works correctly. Suspension: Firstline report that it is relatively common for the rear bushes on the front wishbones to become weak, which can lead to a change in the caster angle and can result in ‘feathering’ of the inside of the tyre. Firstline offers both replacement rear bushes and the complete arms, which include the rear bushes.
exhaust after treatment unit. Comma provides an online application guide to ensure you select the correct oil. New turbo: BTN Turbo advise that prior to fitting the new turbocharger remove the air intake and engine breather pipework situated between the turbocharger and the air filter box. Check the pipework for debris and/or damage and clean/replace as necessary. Failure to carry out this operation can lead to the new turbocharger being damaged on start up or at low mileage.

from the front of the Ford C-Max, particularly when turning at low speeds, or parking, then it could be that the front suspension strut mount bearing is worn and requires replacing.
Lack of power: If the car is using too much fuel and not giving enough power then it could be a cracked intercooler pipe. This pipe runs from the radiator to the top of the engine.
Firstline explain that these bearings can wear or dry out, and whilst spraying them with a proprietary lubricant can sometimes alleviate the problem in the short term, the only long term solution is to replace the defective part.
The mid-section of the pipe has a metal cover and this can crack which means the pipe will be covered in oil. If a creaking or grinding noise is heard

Filters: The Golden Rules of Replacement Separating the good from the bad, filters are the hidden heroes that keep car engines running and their drivers comfortable. Every vehicle technician will change hundreds of oil, fuel, air and cabin air filters in their time.
Oil Filters Replacement rules • Always use suitable tools for the type of filter • Where there is a seamed cartridge, clean the gasket contact surfaces and oil the gasket on the cartridge • Take care not to crush or twist any O-rings • Observe the tightening torques (manual tightening on seamed cartridges) and the specific precautions • Always keep a clean cloth close at hand to collect/dry any excess oil Keep in mind: Depending on the vehicle usage and the condition of the emptied oil, feel free to recommend more frequent oil changes to the driver. Fast fact: In 2014, integrated oil filter modules are expected to out-sell spin-on oil filters in the UK for the first time; thanks to their extended service intervals, better efficiency, extra functions such as oil cooling and pressure monitoring and easier replacement.
Air Filters Replacement rules • Always use suitable tools for the type of filter • Where there is a seamed cartridge, clean the gasket contact surfaces and oil the gasket on the cartridge • Take care not to crush or twist any O-rings • Observe the tightening torques (manual tightening on seamed cartridges) and the specific precautions • Always keep a clean cloth close at hand to collect/dry any excess oil Keep in mind: An air filter cannot be cleaned. It must be replaced. This is because the use of compressed air makes the filter more porous, permanently compromising its ability to filter effectively. Fast fact: For every hour on the road, a car can draw in up to 500 m3 of air. Drivers rely on air intake quality even more during dusty summer weather. Air filters should therefore be changed regularly; only using OE-quality replacements. 24
IGNITION MAGAZINE Powered by Groupauto
Fuel Filters: Diesel Replacement rules • Locate all the hoses and connections • When there has been heating caused by a fluid, watch out for hot coolant leaks • Clean the housing with a clean, lint-free cloth • Systematically replace the gaskets and tighten to the torque indicated by the manufacturer • Connect the hoses well and allow the engine to run for a few minutes in order to ensure that there are no leaks • Prime the pump and remove air from the system Keep in mind: More than for any other filter, replacing a diesel filter requires a clean, dust-free environment.
Fast fact: Diesel filter components can be very sensitive to minus temperatures so aim to check them before freezing weather strikes. Inadequate maintenance can lead to the water freezing; blocking the flow of fuel – potentially causing serious damage.
Cabin Air Filters Replacement rules • Identify the position of the filter(s) and ensure that you thoroughly understand the disassembly/assembly procedure • Use a vacuum and a damp cloth to remove any residue in the system. If necessary use an anti-bacterial spray • Ensure that the new filter is the same as the one being replaced, and that it is perfectly sealed in its housing • After replacement operate the ventilation/climate control system for a few minutes in order to ensure that there are no noises or leaks
Keep in mind: The use of an anti-bacterial product on the filter and in the ducts improves comfort for the vehicle’s occupants.
Fast fact: Fitted as standard to 98% of new vehicles, cabin air filters are soon expected to catch up with oil filters as the biggest-selling replacement filters.
Sogefi OE quality replacement filters are available under the following brands: FRAM® and the FRAM logo are registered trademarks of Fram Group IP, LLC and are used under license.

TOM YOUNGs England and Leicester hooker Tom Youngs is in Stuart Lancaster’s squad for the upcoming World Cup. The Norfolk born front rower speaks to us about the players we should be keeping an eye out for in September, a typical training week and if he really eats 7,000 calories a day! Where did it all begin? It all started at Holt Rugby Club in Norfolk when I was 6 years old. It was my local club and my cousins played there, as it was just down the road I went along too. What would it mean to you to play in the World Cup? It would mean everything and it’s been my main goal for a while now. It’s incredibly exciting to think it’s this year but saying that there is still a long way to go so I’m aiming just to stay injury free and get into the final squad. Which players do you think will have the biggest impact? Julian Savea – New Zealand. He’s a very hard man to stop and can create something out of nothing. David Pocock – Australia. He’s been out injured but he’s a quality player so it will be interesting to see how he goes in the World Cup. Who are England’s toughest opponents? I think we’ve got a really tough pool. Fiji have nothing to lose… and then Australia and Wales speak for themselves so it is going to be tough. Hopefully if we get through, those 26
difficult matches will stand us in good stead for the quarter final. What makes up a typical training week? Match day is usually on a Saturday so Sunday’s are all about recovery. I’ll usually jump on the Wattbike to flush out the legs. Monday is then a lighter day based on upper body weights and pulling. Tuesday is often then heavier which could be lower limb and based on pushing or a Wattbike conditioning session. Wednesday’s are a rest day and then Thursday’s are usually a power session either on the Wattbike or five metre sprints followed by Rugby and then I’ll usually spend some time with the England throwing coach in the afternoon. On Friday’s we have the captain’s run, focus on some line outs and just generally make sure we’re feeling good ahead of the match. Do you really eat 7,000 calories a day!? Doubt it! On a heavy day I guess that might not be far off, I don’t really keep count of what I eat or don’t eat. I don’t eat rubbish, it’s the right thing at the right time but I don’t really count calories. We always have breakfast and

lunch at the club and of course there are guys that have big appetites but to be honest everyone wolfs it away! It’s what fuels us. What’s the banter like between you and your brother? (Tom’s brother Ben also plays for England) My brother is quite cheeky so he likes to take the mick out of me. But we don’t get stuck into each other too much. What would you be doing if you weren’t a professional rugby player? I’d be working on a farm! My family owns a farm in Norfolk and I love spending time there. What might people be surprised to know about you? I don’t really have any party tricks, I’m quite an open book really so what you see is what you get. What’s your guilty pleasure? Vanilla ice cream and Farming magazines. Anything do to with farming really! Tom Youngs is an ambassador for Wattbike, the world’s leading indoor bike. To find out more visit: www.wattbike.com

THE ‘TOP’ TRUCK WORKSHOP Top Truck garages have it all; they are part of a large multinational organisation, benefit from a host of business support services and all whilst remaining an independent garage. Find out why being a Top Truck garage is great for business… “The Top Truck partnership works both ways, although we are still 100% independent we benefit from the group infrastructure and image which benefits small businesses. The corporate clothing is great and we are proud to be part of a larger team. Conversely, Top Truck is strengthened by companies like HTF and the resource that we bring to the network”. David Moore, HTF Commercial Repairs.
QUALITY PARTS Want to have complete confidence in the parts you fit? One of the main advantages of purchasing via your G-Truck distributor is access to OE Quality parts at cost effective prices.
BRANDING The Top Truck garage network is one of the best in the industry, so as a Top Truck garage you need to shout about it.
GROUPAUTO make sure that all approved suppliers to the group provide assurances to the quality and suitability of the components they intend to supply. Being the UK’s largest trading group, they also secure the lowest prices for their members without compromising on quality.
Top Truck garages have access to a fully inclusive branding package that includes building signage, vehicle livery, workshop painting, reception desks, as well as branded work wear and stationery. Funding support is available to help you rebrand your premises and vehicles in the distinctive Top Truck branding.
THE TOP TRUCK WORKSHOP
MARKETING Top Truck has created a comprehensive marketing promotional programme that their garages can use throughout the year to tell people who they are and what they do; • Branded promotional items and point of sale material
HTF COMMERCIAL REPAIRS LTD
• Template software to create your own material to advertise your brand and services • On Route Magazine - commercial vehicle magazine distributed through ‘Commercial Vehicle Workshop’ and ‘Transport Engineer’. “Joining the Top Truck network has elevated our business to a different level, giving us a clear brand and image that is recognised as the market leader in independent aftermarket servicing of commercial vehicles.”

TOP TRUCK TRAINING TOP TRUCK SOS As a Top Truck garage you have automatic access to the worldwide recovery programme through Top Truck SOS.
With a shortage of skilled technicians in the industry, possibly the greatest string to a Top Truck garage’s bow is the comprehensive training available through the programme. • Technical training Top Truck garages are encouraged to follow a comprehensive and ongoing technical training programme with leading training providers. This programme not only provides technicians with technical expertise but also effective tools for managing their businesses.
BUSINESS SERVICES Have you looked at the amount of money you are spending on insurance? Do you have the best deal on your utilities, vans or courtesy vehicles? You could be getting the best deal on all those things. Thanks to the buying power of the network you can benefit from savings on everything from tooling hire to waste removal services.
• irtec Licensing Scheme One of the most popular benefits of the Top Truck programme is the Institute of Road Transport Engineers’ (IRTE) irtec Licensing Scheme. An irtec license certifies the skills, safety and technical competence of garage technicians in line with the requirements of the industry. Top Truck ensures that all of their garages commit their technicians to becoming irtec accredited within six months of joining the scheme. • Apprenticeship Programme The Top Truck Apprenticeship Programme gives garages the platform to train and develop their staff in line with what the market demands of them. The programme is fully supported by GROUPAUTO and approved supplier Valeo, so all it will cost you is their weekly wage whilst they are working in the workshop.
RECEPTION
“All the support from Top Truck has helped us gain new repair and servicing contracts as many customers now want the assurances that the IRTEC assessments and on-going training gives. Top Truck allows us to be a top level independent repair business while giving us all the benefits of a nationally recognised group” Carl Haslam, Haslam Commercials.
FLEET MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE In today's digitally demanding world, software has become a must have tool for any workshop. The Blue Crystal Rental Fleet Management System (RFM) allows quick and accurate access to your customer and vehicle records. All data records can be accessed centrally with just a few clicks – no more need for scribbled on wall planners and excel spread sheets. “The aid of having everything going through one operating system has made revisiting old jobs so much easier and retrieving information faster. Gone are the days of trawling through countless old invoices or spread sheets.”

HOW TO SURVIVE A
ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE Lets face it, a zombie apocalypse is an inevitability*...so when the undead rise and begin their reign of terror, how prepared will you be? IGNITION talks you through the do’s, don’ts and definite musts of zombie apocalypse survival. *Actual chances of a zombie apocalypse may vary
ZOMBIE TYPES Every film, TV series or novel has a different take on zombies. The one over-riding theme is their hunger for flesh, and the one sure-fire way to despatch them - with a blow to the brain. Here are a few types of zombie that you could end up facing...
WEAPONS Cricket bat
SLOW & OMINOUS
Á la ‘Shaun of the Dead’, a blunt instrument such as a cricket bat won’t run out of ammo, or jam with unfortunate timing. It does however have a limited range, and if it breaks... well you’re utterly buggered!
Think ‘Walking Dead’. Easy to evade in open spaces, but terrifyingly singleminded in an enclosed space. Use your wit to out maneouvre them, and avoid being cornered at all costs.
SHOTGUN
FAST & CLUMSY
Arguably the go-to weapon of choice for battling zombies. A shotgun has devastating power and a decent enough blast radius to clear any zombie incursion. The loud blast may attract more zombies and running out of ammo is always an issue.
‘Zombieland’ style zombies mean you need some solid cardio to outrun them, but their clumsyness means that even if they get in close enough, you may be able to shake them off without harm. Rule no.1: Cardio is key.
FAST & FEROCIOUS If the movie ‘World War Z’ taught us anything about zombies, it’s that we’re most certainly doomed if they’re as fast and ferocious as those zombies. Finding a safe house and having plenty of weaponry is the only way to make it past day one.
NOCTURNAL & SUPER STRONG The mutant zombies in the film ‘I am Legend’ are pants-poopingly scary. Immensley quick and strong, you’re pretty much done for if you come across one of those mutants. The only saving grace is you can roam for supplies during the day without the fear of attack, but that is the only saving grace.
40
IGNITION MAGAZINE Powered by Groupauto
AXE A level up from the cricket bat, if you can get your hands on an axe, you may just fair quite well in the zombie-slaying trade. Must be kept sharp for full zombie head splitting capacity.
CROSSBOW Super effective (if you’re a good shot). Unlike a gun you won’t run out of ammo, as you can simply retrieve the bolts from any felled zombie...but beware, you are vulnerable when doing so!
FISTS The ultimate survival weapon! Ammo isn’t an issue, but getting up close and personal with the undead isn’t for the faint-hearted. A last resort, but at least it’s a fighting chance!
SHELTER Finding shelter is crucial to apocalyptic survival. Whilst being on the move is smart, it is also exhausting. Settling down somewhere safe and secure is great for moral, a sure-fire way to recoop and a chance to regain some sense of civility. That being said, any old house might not cut the mustard when it comes to zombie-proofing. Take a look at some of these ideas for the ultimate zombie bunker.
SHOPPING CENTRE
ABANDONED Farm
STOP ‘n ’ SHOP
The holy grail of apocalyptic survival. A shopping centre has everything you could ever need to out-last the undead. The only draw back is that the majority of survivers will flock to their nearest shopping centre, meaning the chances of encountering an infected person will increase. Stock up and shoot off back to your own safe house to avoid the masses!
NEIGHBOURHOOD HOUSE
Every neighbourhood has that one house...the one with the huge gates, guard dogs and the over zealous security concious owner. This house could be your apocalyptic bunker. Your over-prepared, slightly odd neighbour may one day end up being your biggest ally, so make sure you keep him sweet! Just be careful not to make yourself too ‘at home’, as comfort often breeds complacency.
If you’re lucky enough to come across an abandoned farm, it could turn out to be your saviour. Secluded in the countryside with land to grow crops and plenty of acres to hide yourself away in, a farm can be a great stronghold. That is unless a hoarde of zombies happen to stumble through! Always have an exit strategy!
BARGE/HOUSEBOAT
Zombies can’t swim! However they also won’t drown, so being in the water isn’t a failsafe option. Having a house or mode of transport that can take you safely out to deep water is a godsend. Load up on supplies (and fuel) and get you and any other survivers out to sea and wait for this whole zombie apocalypse malarky to blow over.
CHANCES OF SURVIVAL Zombieland survival is all about being prepared for anything. This basic survival guide will only get you so far! In reality (albeit a farfetched reality) your own survival instincts will get you through. If your survival instincts are somewhat questionable...you could always check out this awesome Zombie Survival manual from Haynes Manuals £16.99 www.haynes.co.uk

SCHAE FF L E R
FORMULA E EXCLUSIVE Schaeffler is on the FIA Formula E grid as the exclusive Technology Partner of Team ABT Sportsline WITH ITS BRAND LOGOS PROUDLY DISPLAYED ON THE CARS OF DANIEL ABT AND LUCAS DI GRASSI Formula E marks the start of a new generation of motorsport. For the first time, car races are being held with cars powered only by electricity. The identical single-seaters reach a speed of up to 230 km/h, accelerating from zero to 100 km/h in less than three seconds. During the near-60-minute race there is one pit stop during which the car is changed. Chief Technology Officer Peter Gutzmer comments… How does the motorsport commitment affect Schaeffler’s routine business? “Motorsport is not only ideally suited to accelerate the further development of new technologies but also energizes the topic of electric mobility with emotions in a fascinating way.” Why is Schaeffler active in Formula E? “Helping to shape the electrification of the vehicles is one of our central forward-thinking topics. Schaeffler is an innovation leader in this field and frequently pioneers new ideas. The FIA Formula E is bold and visionary, which makes it a perfect fit for Schaeffler, and an ideal complement to our other commitments.” What does the technical support of the team look like? “In the first year, the Formula E regulations sensibly do not permit any proprietary developments. However, we plan to support the subsequent further development of the race car and its components with the know-how and experience of our engineers.”

A strong team in the cockpit In Lucas di Grassi (30) and Daniel Abt (22) the squad of Hans-JĂźrgen Abt has its dream team filling the cockpits of the two Formula E race cars. The experienced Brazilian and youngster Daniel Abt are not only fast and technically adept but perfectly harmonize with each other off the race track as well
#11 - LUCAS DI GRASSI (BR)
#66 - DANIEL ABT (D)
With his personable nature, experience from Formula One and other race series, plus his long association with FIA Formula E, Lucas di Grassi was the team’s driver of choice. As an Audi factory driver who has been released for the series by his employer, Lucas has known the ABT Sportsline squad for a long time. The 30-year-old Brazilian has demonstrated that he feels at home in single-seater racing by finishing runner-up in GP2 and by winning the city street race in Macau.
Daniel Abt numbers among the most successful German talents in formula racing. Following his title win in the ADAC Formel Masters and a foray into Formula 3, he celebrated second place in the GP3 Championship in 2012, where he became familiar with the Formula One environment. He regularly appears on TV as an expert for the Sky Sports channel. After a year of learning the ropes in GP2, the 22-year-old youngster competed in the series again for Hilmer Motorsport in 2014 and starts for ABT Sportsline in FIA Formula E. BRISTOL ROVERS BACK TO THE FOOTBALL LEAGUE
“UP THE FOOTBALL LEAGUE WE GO!” fter 46 league games and two play-off semi-finals, second placed Bristol Rovers and third placed Grimsby Town locked horns in the Vanarama Conference play-off final to determine which one of them would return to the Football League. Rovers were bidding to become the first side to bounce back at the first attempt since Carlisle ten years ago, while Grimsby have been trying to escape from football’s fifth division for five years. A record crowd for a Conference play-off final of 47,029 were inside the magnificent Wembley Stadium to see these two former Football League stalwarts do battle, with almost 30,000 of them rooting for Rovers. Grimsby's Lennell John-Lewis and Rovers' Ellis Harrison traded goals in the first half and both sides struggled to break the deadlock following Harrison's equaliser. The second half was a very tense affair with few chances although there were one or two anxious moments when a couple of crosses drifted across the Rovers area and were missed by defenders and forwards alike. After 90 minutes the two teams were forced to place extra time. There were even fewer opportunities in extra time and with such a huge prize at stake it was no surprise that players and supporters were showing signs of nerves as they headed in to a penalty shootout. Rovers boss Clarke decided to make a brave decision and opt to change goalkeepers for the penalty shootout - on came Steve Mildenhall to face his former club. Chris Lines and Craig Disley scored the first for their respective sides, Matty Taylor and John-Lewis followed suit with their spot kicks and Lee Brown netted the third for Rovers. But then came the drama as Jon-Paul Pittman, who had entered the fray as a 70th minute substitute, ballooned his effort over the bar for Town.
46

Two to go and Rovers were almost there. Angelo Balanta tucked away penalty number four for Rovers, while Craig Clay netted a third for The Mariners. So it was left to Lee Mansell to take the final kick and he confidently stroked the ball into the net to make it 5-3 to The Gas. “A massive weight was lifted from everyone's shoulders after our promotion play-off final victory against Grimsby Town. The disappointment of being relegated from the Football League last year had been so upsetting for everyone associated with Bristol Rovers and we were all determined to get back into the league at the first time of asking.” Rovers boss Darrell Clarke told us. “We couldn't have done it without the backing of our Board of Directors, the efforts of a dedicated team of staff and players, our magnificent supporters and companies such as Kingswood Autopart Ltd, one of a loyal group of local businesses who have continued to back Rovers again next season through their involvement in the 1883 Sponsors Club.” Paul Stewart of Kingswood Autopart tells us “As a lifelong Bristol Rovers supporter it’s fantastic to see the boys back in the Football League after a couple of disappointing seasons. Now all that remains is to catch up with Bristol City and take our rightful place above them in the league! We are proud to be members of the 1883 Sponsors Club for the 2015-2016 season.” Kingswood Autopart Ltd has been a member of GROUPAUTO for over 15 years. The Bristol based motor factor provides independent garages in the area with quality car parts from the likes of Mintex, Sogefi, Valeo, KYB and FAI. hat do you think made you choose a career in flying, or did flying choose you? I always fancied the idea of flying. My father was a fighter pilot in the Second World War, although he didn’t talk about it much I guess the interest stems from there. We lived on a farm in the middle of nowhere; when we climbed the mountains on the farm, we would always see eagles soaring along the cliffs. Looking down and imagining the freedom to fly gave me a tremendous buzz. What are the physical implications on your body? You have to have very strong body-core and neck muscles to withstand the high ‘G’ forces and stress from the 400 degrees per second roll rate. You need to have good techniques and exercises for looking after your back and your neck. We specifically train these muscle groups to deal with the pressure. Good aerobic fitness is essential so I aim for 40mins running or racquetball 3 times a week. My preference is racquetball, which also helps improve mental agility as well as strategy, reflexes and satisfying the desire to win.
Image: Predrag Vuckovic/Red Bull Content Pool
Can you describe the feeling of flying through the track? Once you have got yourself into that place of feeling completely prepared and you’re looking forward to coming into the track it all becomes second nature. It involves intense concentration with huge amounts of activity going on with air gates flashing past the cockpit every few seconds. The satisfaction of a well-flown race is tremendous. What is your favourite aircraft to fly? For handling the MXS because it is just the most fantastic airplane for handling and manoeuvrability. For nostalgia, my favourite aircraft to fly is the Spitfire. How important is it for you to mentally prepare before a race? Somehow you have to find a balance between being too relaxed and too ‘hyped up’. You need to be feeling ‘sharp’ but not under so much pressure that you do not fly in a natural precise and smooth manner. It’s very important that when you start the engine you are looking forward to the race and that you’re mentally and physically prepared.
When you’re not training for racing what do you enjoy doing with your free time? I love to spend time with the family, I have three sons; Max 22 (who is also our race analyst) Dan who's 19 and doing a Mechanical Engineering degree at Lancaster University and Ben our youngest who is soon to be turning 15. Luckily my family share similar hobbies. My wife Hilary competed in aerobatic competitions for years. She was very good. We love to go ski-ing at least once a year as a family, although I have to be careful not to injure myself before the start of the air race season. Often I will be spending time in our workshop with the boys fixing up the classic cars. Dan has made it clear that he would one day love to fly with a wingsuit, but I have told him to start with skydiving and see how he goes, I think he’s crazy!

At GROUPAUTO we’re all about cars, so Nigel, what’s your favourite car past or present? I love old cars … as a child, my father owned a Bristol and I have owned a few MGB’s. I bought my first, which was an MGB GT, when I was flying helicopters in Africa. It was British racing green; I loved it and did all the maintenance myself, so easy with the old cars compared to the modern ones. After I moved to England I bought an MGB roadster as soon as I could afford it. A few years later, I gave it to my wife and now, our oldest son Max (our team track analyst) is re-building it. It’s been in the family for 34 years but has not been on the road for 15 years, so Max has a big job on his hands! I have just purchased a Tesla Model S which is an amazing state-of-the-art electric car with superb performance. Do you have the same thrill for driving as you do with flying? It’s different, driving to me is more of a necessity, and flying I do because I want to and because it gives me great pleasure – a real passion, but it’s also my job and how I earn a living. I have been lucky to do some driving days on race tracks in England such as Silverstone and Thruxton. If I was re-incarnated, I’d love to be a professional racing driver. By the way, my wife has had more speeding tickets than me! My last one was in 1983. 54
Are you a fan of Formula 1 or other motorsport? I am a fan of F1, and I follow it of course. Right now, we are Ferrari F1 fans becuase James Allison (Tech Director) is a friend of ours and in 2009 he designed the analysis tool we use to determine and plot the best racing line round the track. He's a genius and we're so lucky to have the benefit of his skills and ideas for air racing. Our youngest son, Ben (14) wants to be an F1 driver and is currently competing in a junior Go Karting competition, the EVO cup. I take him to the Rye House track once a month and so far he's doing well - better than his father anyway! He's been on the podium in every race and is lying second in the championship. Maybe it's time for him to find a sponsor. Have you done any other extreme or death defying stunts? I'm definitely not an adrenaline junkie but I have done one bungee jump which at the time (2000) was the highest in the world, Bloukrans in South Africa. Myself, Hilary and all three boys did the Gorge Swing in Zimabwe (Victoria Falls) in 2012 and that was even more scary than the bungee jump. Hilary and I swam with sharks on the Barrier Reef some years ago.

“THE SATISFACTION OF A WELL-FLOWN RACE IS TREMENDOUS.”
THE IMPORTANCE OF IN THE
NEUROSCIENCE CAR INDUSTRY Whilst neuroscience may be the new business buzz word, the car industry is falling short of truly understanding motivation, personalities and emotions and their impact on retaining and attracting new clients. Concepts and techniques derived from brain research and psychology can play a crucial role in improving individual and business performance in the car industry says cognitive neuroscientist and psychologist Dr Lynda Shaw.
MOTIVATION
BRAND
EMOTION
Motivation is vital in the car industry. It is not always about money and special offers. Take the time to find out what motivates people. Dopamine is one of the brain's pleasure chemicals. When behavioural neuroscientist John Salamone offered rats the choice of one pile of food or another pile of food twice the size but behind a small fence, rats with lowered levels of dopamine almost always took the easy way out, choosing the small pile instead of jumping the fence for greater reward. In business if you create a happy dopamine environment full of rewarding experiences, then we become more motivated to push ourselves.
Brand association and brand loyalty are increasingly being explained by consumer neuroscience. To understand emotional response to brands is a key to effective marketing. The experience - including emotional and cognitive processing such as memory, decision making and attention determines customer satisfaction and loyalty to the brand. This means that the prefrontal cortex and limbic system are busy evaluating and determining consumer choice.
Using consumer research and neuroscience we can record brain activity with electrodes and advances in neural imaging technology making it possible to determine specific regions of the brain that are responsible for consumer behaviours. For example studies of emotion are crucial to the advertising industry because we know that emotion plays a significant role in our ability to remember an advertisement and in all our decisions.
IMPORTANCE OF THE GROUP
KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE
ABOUT DR. LYNDA SHAW
Consumers can be more influenced by the choices and decisions of their peers than their own internal standards. Many environmental factors influence the things we choose and the way we think. In particular a group or community we want to belong to can have a huge impact. Group membership not only supports us but also moulds our beliefs and preferences. This may be both at a conscious and unconscious level.
Having a better understanding of the difference between male and female thinking can affect the sales outcome. Whilst there is no direct evidence to suggest that one gender experiences compassion more than the other, women naturally show more emotional connection than men. The success of marketing exercise goals for instance is, to a certain extent, influenced by stereotypical gender differences. Assumption is foolish but understanding the brain and marketing differently for men and women is key.
Dr Lynda Shaw is a cognitive neuroscientist and chartered psychologist, as well as being a professional speaker, who trains business leaders and their teams to boost communication and relationships to improve performance for real development and growth. Lynda has also lectured in Psychology and Neuroscience at Brunel University. www.drlyndashaw.com

What if your car had night vision like an owl? During night time, owls instantly detect movement and clearly see their surroundings. Cars with this ability could dramatically reduce traffic accidents, explains DENSO, supplier of advanced automotive technology, systems and components for the world's major car manufacturers.
Vehicle detection among city lights City streets are more dangerous at night, with low visibility and blinding headlights often causing problems for some drivers. DENSO has created a new object detection technology that can give your car night vision like an owl, so that accident prevention becomes much clearer.
Traffic accidents are on the rise worldwide Vehicle safety technologies continue to improve, yet around the world 1.2 million people are killed in traffic accidents each year, with the number continuing to rise. As more people drive cars in more countries, the need to improve vehicle safety becomes increasingly urgent.
Technology to detect cars, their distances and driver behaviour The glare of city lights and oncoming car headlights can make driving at night difficult, but DENSO’s new, intelligent algorithm uses data from thousands of possible car models to detect cars and their distances and driver behaviour, even in low visibility or blurry conditions. Hossein Tehrani Niknejad, DENSO Advanced Sensing System Researcher explains: “Distinguishing headlights from streetlights using images is difficult, especially when you consider the shape and appearance of thousands of car models on
the road. Our new technology allows drivers to see cars clearly during night driving, for example, in cities.”
Accurate detection intelligence leads studies DENSO has put its technology to the test in a series of experimental testing, simulating the severe and difficult conditions drivers experience at night. As accidents generally happen in an instant, the system that accurately identifies risk down to the millisecond without error has the potential to save lives.
More advanced safety systems This technology has the potential to improve safety for drivers and their surroundings. Pedestrians, motorcycles, animals and other obstacles in any setting around the world can benefit. Combining DENSO’s accurate detection technology with sensors such as millimetre wave radars, laser radar systems or wireless communication prepares the way for world-first safety systems.
On the road to automated driving When technology advances so far that any object in any situation can be detected in fractions of a second, automated driving becomes reality.
DENSO’s challenge - to eliminate traffic accidents DENSO’s objective is for people and automobiles to co-exist safely in a world where there are no traffic accidents. Its high-speed, high-precision object detection technology represents a step towards making the world safer for drivers and pedestrians. What new technologies can be developed next to achieve accident-free vision? DENSO will continue its quest to reduce traffic accidents worldwide.
