Tear Out Gig Guide Inside
JAGG // Live at the Christchurch Arts Festival // Thurs 18 Aug
Hera // Pysch Tigers // August Featured Artist “Psych Tigers” is the solo music project of 16 year old Sam Perry. The idea was conceived in 2011 whilst in the studio recording an EP with his surf punk band “Beach Arab”. Whilst writing songs for the EP, strange musical ideas began to form. What started out as 13-minute psychedelic delay heavy jams, quickly started to form songs. Many a song was written and he decided to take the project seriously. He made a Facebook page and a Bandcamp page under the moniker “Psych Tigers” and recorded and released his first song “Glitter”. To his surprise the song received a fair deal of attention in the blogosphere and was played on numerous New Zealand “indie” radio stations. Driven by this unexpected success he recorded a 7 track EP in his bedroom over the course of a few weeks. The EP is laced with numerous influences and genres from psychedelic/ surf/pop to aggressive lo-fi/garage punk. www.facebook.com/psychtigers www.psychtigers.bandcamp.com www.myspace.com/psychtigers www.twitter.com/psychtigers www.psychtigers.tumblr.com

The often overlooked genres represented here are staunch, proud and possess fiercely loyal fans. LILY //
2011 //
Get warmed up before seven of the key Rugby World Cup matches in a entertainment playground adjacent to the Rugby World Cup Fanzone.
Bipeds Productions bring their award winning chemistry to Christchurch to present their dance work Lily. Their last show Fishnet took the city by storm! This poignant piece orbits around the central character of iconic Dunedin dance teacher Lily Stevens. With their trade-mark hilarity these seasoned performers navigate a thread through preparation for dancing competitions into the catatonic state that ensues after Lilyís end of year recital and on into a vivid and sensuous celebration of Barefoot dancing to Chopin. It features a chorus of young Christchurch dancers from Southern Ballet and St Margaretís School.
Following its highly successful debut season at the Body Festival in 2009 and the unfortunate cancellation of its 2010 season, Christchurch based Southern Lights Dance Company is delighted to be back with a new season of works including two new commissions and a remounting of one previous work. With the continued support of Creative New Zealand and for 2011, partnership with the Goethe Institut, the company will present new works by New Zealand choreographer Maria Dabrowska and German choreographer Riki Von Falken. In addition Fleur de Thierís work ëPerchí from the 2009 season will be revisited. Featuring a company of outstanding dancers be sure to catch this company at The Body Festival before it heads to Q Theatre in Auckland as part of The Edgeís STAMP programme and the Tempo Festival.
Featuring the CHART live music stage, The Body Festival Speed Dancing Stage, Pandemonium Tree Percussion and Aerials, Crazy Crash Pad Rugby, Water Music from the Christchurch Symphony and Southern Opera, The Paul Kelly Dancers and roving characters from Chant et Danse, The Court Jesters and Tablo. Netherwood //
Gone With the Weird //
Rumble & Bang // Patrick Gilles’ two locally shot films will screen in the Festival line-up. Feature-length film The Holy Roller was shot in early 2009 and includes a cast of local actors. The story is based on Australian co-scripter/lead actor Angus Benfield’s own experiences as a pastor. “Failing nightclub owner Simon is inspired to transform his club into a chapel and enlists the help of Pastor Luke and his musician sister Kate. With its success the church soon starts to attract unwholesome attention in this shaggy, good-natured romp.” says Festival Director Bill Gosden. Gilles’ short film Huhu Attack! will play as part of the Homegrown: Flights of Fantasy programme curated by MIC. The short features a Canterbury backdrop and a musical score performed by the NZSO. MIC Programmer Deborah Lawler-Dormer describes the short as a “50s-style comedyhorror-musical extravaganza”. Local feature Netherwood, filmed in the limestone hills of Waipara, will have its World Premiere at the Christchurch leg of the Festival. Director Cristobal Araus Lobos and Producer Owen Black (known for his role as Dr Ethan Pierce in Shortland Street), have set the film in a fictional backwater.
“Netherwood stirs a hefty dose of hardboiled Southern Man stoicism into a modern day Western thriller. Owen Black stars in a very different role as the lone drifter Stan who is soon butting heads with macho bully Mex, played by fellow Street alumnus Will Hall.” says Festival Assistant Programmer Michael McDonnell. A documentary on 90s alternative rock band Squirm will also have its World Premiere at the Festival. Gone With the Weird, from director Simon Ogston, looks at the band founded by friends Virgil Reality and Mike Hex, as well as the music scene at the time. The documentary features interviews with their contemporaries including Loves Ugly Children, Pumpkinhead and Ape Management.
“It is an affectionate tribute to both an unknown band worthy of rediscovery and to the fertile punk underground that spawned them. Christchurch was home to a vibrant and innovative music scene throughout the 90s. Gone with the Weird is a welcome reintroduction to the music from this time.” says McDonnell.
Simon Ogston has also collaborated with Jeff Smith for local music documentary Rumble & Bang. The film looks at Chants R&B, a garage rock band in the 60s strongly influenced by John Mayall and The Pretty Things. The film features pristine archival footage from the band’s Stage Door gigs as well as new recordings from the band’s 2007 reunion.
“Rumble & Bang proves that there was a relevant musical underground in New Zealand long before the days of Flying Nun.” says McDonnell. Previously announced, Park Kiyong’s documentary Moving will provide a personal account of the impact of the February 22 earthquake on a Korean immigrant family attempting to rebuild their lives. Shot in April the film captures a key moment in their continuing struggle to come to termswith their loss. The work of Korean filmmaker Park has previously featured at international film festivals. He is currently at the University of Auckland on a research fellowship. The Festival screens in Christchurch at Hoyts Northlands from August 12 to 28. Programmes are around town now and online at www.nzff. co.nz, counter bookings now open at venue.

CSO Presents // CSO Presents // Lamb and Hayward Masterworks Kiwi Soul series - Demidenko plays Rachmaninov Strauss Don Juan, Op.20 Rachmaninov Concerto No.2, Op.18, C minor Rachmaninov Symphony No.2, Op.27, E minor
An array of soul, funk and jazz musicians will take to the stage in the latest of collaborations with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra in Kiwi Soul Saturday 20th August.
It will be an evening dominated by Rachmaninov when the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra takes to the stage under the baton of Chief Conductor, Tom Woods on Saturday 27th August in the Lamb and Hayward Masterworks series concert Demidenko plays Rachmaninov.
Cool sophistication will be the order of the day with New Zealand’s own Soul Diva Whirimako Black making a welcome return to Christchurch. Whirimako’s distinctive sound, her use of traditional Māori musical forms and te reo make her a unique and powerful voice in New Zealand.
Internationally renowned pianist, Nikolai Demidenko returns to Christchurch to perform Rachmaninov’s Concerto No 2, one of the great 20th century piano concertos, a work which somehow never loses its grip on audiences.
Christchurch’s own LA Mitchell and Mark Vanilau will perform a selection of songs including repertoire from their own catalogues as well as renditions on numbers from greats such as Renee Geyer, Stevie Wonder, Phil Collins and Randy Crawford.
Demidenko is renowned for his authoritative performances of the Russian concerto repertoire such as Rachmaninov and has worked with many conductors and orchestras throughout the world. His passionate pianism means that he is in high demand worldwide. The second half of the concert features the composer’s Second Symphony which reflects a mastery of the symphonic form and the ability to use it to convey very human feelings. Beautifully orchestrated, Second Symphony is widely regarded as Rachmaninov’s best symphony and its warmth and depth of emotion leaves a long lasting effect on its audience.
When: Saturday 27th August, 7.30pm Where: Aurora Centre Tickets: Tickets are $40 and can be purchased through Dash Tickets www.dashtickets.co.nz
The concept of this concert was born from the orchestra’s collaboration projects with CPIT Jazz School and a number of music arrangements from the likes of Tom Rainey, Scott Taitoko, Cameron Pearce, Harry Harrison and Gwyn Reynolds will feature throughout the evening. Rainey will also take to the podium as conductor.
When: Saturday 20th August, 7.30pm Where: CBS Arena Tickets: $20 and $30 are available through Ticketek
The Larnachs // Owen Marshall Ngaio Marsh Award // Finalists Announced The finalists for the 2011 Ngaio Marsh Award for Best Crime Novel, which will be presented as part of the upcoming Christchurch Arts Festival, have now been announced today. The award, now in its second year, is made annually for the best crime, mystery, or thriller novel written by a New Zealand citizen or resident. Its namesake, Dame Ngaio Marsh, is renowned worldwide as one of the four iconic “Queens of Crime” of the Golden Age of Detective Fiction. The award was established last year with the blessing of Dame Ngaio’s closest living relatives. Over the past two months an expert panel consisting of seven local and international judges has been considering the best examples of locally written crime and thriller fiction published in New Zealand during 2010.The judges are now pleased to announce that the finalists are:
Blood Men // Paul Cleave (Random House) Captures // Neil Cross (Simon & Schuster) Hunting Blind // Paddy Richardson (Penguin) Slaughter Falls // Alix Bosco (Penguin) The judges praised Blood Men as “a gruesomely gripping story” told “in clean, sharp prose, with authentically laconic dialogue and

flashes of very dark humour”; said Captured was “fascinating”, with “amazing twists and turns” and a “main character who was drawn so well”; rated Hunting Blind highly for its “sense of downright creepiness” and “some fascinatingly complex characters”; and were impressed by “the depth and complexity” and “well-executed plot unfolding at a good pace” in Slaughter Falls.
larly tough decision for the panel this year, as judges were impressed by each of the books on the longlist, and there was a real diversity of storytelling, settings, and styles. There were some very good local crime novels published in 2010 that haven’t become finalists, but that’s a good sign of the growing strength of our own indigenous interpretation of a genre that’s popular around the world.”
This year’s winner of the Ngaio Marsh Award for Best Crime Novel will be announced at a ceremony at the conclusion of the “Setting the Stage for Murder” event at the TelstraClear Club in North Hagley Park on the afternoon of Sunday 21 August 2011. New York Times bestselling international crime writers Tess Gerritsen and John Hart will also be appearing at the event. The winner will receive a distinctive handcrafted trophy designed and created by New Zealand sculptor and Unitec art lecturer Gina Ferguson, a set of Ngaio Marsh novels courtesy of HarperCollins, and a cheque for $1,000 provided by the Christchurch Writers Festival Trust.
Like Dame Ngaio in her heyday, local crime writers are now showing that they can stand shoulder-to-shoulder, quality-wise, with their more well-known international contemporaries, said Sisterson. “We should be proud of our best crime writers, and support and celebrate their success, just like we are justifiably proud of other New Zealanders who achieve great things in their chosen field.”
“The four finalists are a great representation of both the quality and depth of contemporary Kiwi-written crime fiction,” said Judging Convenor Craig Sisterson. “It was a particu-
