Letters Music Profile // I Wrote Anthesiac and Never Sent //

Sunday 30 // Monday 31 October Geo Dome // Hagley Park

FLY MY PRETTIES//

Anthesiac are a three piece band from Christchurch. The band consists of Josh Braden (vocalist and guitarist), Sam Hood (Bassist), and Chris Self (Drums). Anthesiac are breaching sonic boundaries with their effects driven wizardry. They are not the easiest band to label or pigeonhole: their sound can be described as lush and spacious, huge and heavy, with dynamic intensity, ranging from a whisper to a wall of sound.

Monday 10 October // Riccarton Park

"Reid [was a] mesmeric vocalist embracing numbers from Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht along with desolate struggle street country and biting contemporary songs. [With] evocative covers of John Prine’s Angel from Montgomery, Mazzy Star’s Wasted and Jolie Holland’s Old Fashioned Morphine." //

WRITERS FESTIVAL//

Francesca Horsley, The Listener. 20 year old Christchurch-based singer/songwriter Nadia Reid has been forging a low-flying pathway in music and live performances with her unique brand of understated charm since she picked up a guitar 6 years ago. Her debut EP ‘Letters I Wrote and Never Sent’ is due for imminent liberation, produced by Ben Edwards (The Sitting Room) and recorded at Quicksand Studios in Christchurch through Gold Sounds. The EP features collaborations with musicians Tim Moore (Von Klap), Mike Fordham (Von Klap), and Simon Gregory (Devlish Mary & The Holy Rollers), the result of which provides lavish sound texture to Nadia’s songs. Nadia has appeared with a variety of artists of national and international renown including: The Bats, Tiny Vipers (US), The Eastern, Tono, Jaime Regan (UK), Matt Langley, and Von Klap. Opening for such diverse luminaries, her solo performances maintain integrity as an emerging musical voice. Nadia will celebrate the release of her EP with a four-centre tour starting in Christchurch at The Archive on the 27th October. Happiness Stan and Charlotte Ivey will join Nadia, along with a stellar band consisting of Ben Eldridge (Heavy Jones Trio, Reduction Agents, Dictaphone Blues), Joe McCallum (Julia Deans), and Rich Densem (Mustard) on the Southern shows.

They have supported bands such as Dunedin’s Mountain Eater (Fronted by the former vocalist of HDU), and Wellington’s Beast Wars, and have played alongside New Zealand greats Die Die Die at last year’s Chart Fest at the Christchurch Town Hall. The band have been performing around the South Island for around four years now and are finally about to release their E.P. Null And Void. The CD was produced by the band themselves, and mixed and mastered in Dunedin by Dale Cotton.

‘Next up were Anthesiac, a band from Christchurch who had travelled down to take part and do their bit. One of my favourite bands of the night, they produced a loose flowing set of post-rock sounds, reminding me instantly of Sonic Youth and bands of the Dunedin-Sound era mixed with some Mogwai and even a touch of Bauhaus. At times the vocals even reached insane peaks that made me think of Coheed & Cambria’s epic singing. The band used an aggressive and relentlessly driving bass with tight drumming to create crushing walls of crescendoing sound that exploded colourfully with bursts of guitar. With a sound that is at once very familiar and extremely original, I can see this band going extremely far, and would fit perfectly billed with acts like Jakob, Sora Shima, Mountaineater and Idiot Prayer.’ Taken from a review by Drew Handcock: Dunedin music.com

Reuben Stone & Brazaman

Bachelorette

The Swarm is a colaboration of musical connections from around ChCh, driven by Gallagher / Thorpe from Ian Costello’s legendary Celtic combo The Black Velvet Band. The lads crank out some of the high energy hooch rock they have been brewing in garages, sheds and spare rooms over the shaky months.

Reuben Stone, Brazaman and Reach are hitting the road for two weeks to vend quality tunes straight to your ear holes! Reuben Stone will be playing a solo guitarist / vocal set for the tour, joined by Brazaman on the percussion. Reuben will be performing songs written over the last ten years of his musical career containing various styles ranging from finger style folk, through to rock music and experimental space pop!

With support from Jasmina Maschina

All the way from Sao Paulo Brazil, the one and only ‘Brazaman’ will be dropping some Brazilian reggae / roots tunes. He will be joined by Reuben Stone on the drums for an epic Brazil meets NZ fusion montage!! Joining Reuben and Brazaman for the journey providing dj support is the Reach, local beat junkie from Christchurch. Reuben Stone, Brazaman and DJ Reach will be teaming up for live sound system jam with Reuben Stone playing electric guitar and Brazaman on the MC / percussion duties.

For the uninitiated, Bachelorette is the solo recording and live performing project of Annabel Alpers. Bachelorette’s live shows are an aural treat, an all-encompassing, exuberant and visceral experience, her music creating cosmic, emotive scenarios accompanied by sonically controlled color-saturated projections, a backdrop whisking you further into Bachelorette’s universe.

The Swarm aim to build some good times and fun into Christchurch’s world cup experience and beyond and have recently released the supporters song and video ‘Back the Blacks’ (theswarm.co.nz / backtheblacks.co.nz) to support the province and inspire the ABs on their winning way.

New Music Collective // Performance Review Not a pub gig, not a concert... Started by the creative geniuses Tamara Smith, Michael Story and Andy Keegan as an outlet for Christchurch’s musical minds, the New Music Collective is a breath of fresh air for people looking for a relaxed atmosphere and new, exciting music. Currently hosted every Thursday at the CPSA building (Christchurch Polytech Student Association) at CPIT on Madras St, the entertainment alternates weekly between an organised line up and a casual jam night. Jazz, funk, folk, surf rock, and many other cross-sections of genres may cross your path, so prepare yourself for an evening not currently heard in many other places in our damaged city.

Seeing a parallel between the AB’s rugby campaigns and their city, they are promoting a message of determination, resilience, strength and positivity - we get knocked down but we get back up again. 75% of profits from audio downloads of ‘Back the Blacks’ go to the Christchurch Earthquake Mayoral Fund The Swarm had the great opportunity to be the opening act at the Fanzone on the first day of the tournament and of late we have been taking that 30 minute live show around some of the Christchurch schools to boost a bit of morale after what has been a pretty tough year The Swarm want you to sing loud and sing proud. New Zealand, let’s feel your dedication.

Fly My Pretties // Derby Day Out // New Cast & Songs Skate, Rattle & Roll Phoenix Drinks and Loop are proud to announce that New Zealand’s most loved musical collective are set to take flight once again. Having not ventured out since early 2009, Fly My Pretties are back with a re-imagined show, new cast and a wealth of new songs. The fresh concept will see the 16-strong cast collaborate with celebrated contemporary visual artist, Hayley King (Flox). Audiences can expect a completely new production, from re-imagined costumes, to unique boundary-pushing visuals.

Formed late 2007, and situated in Christchurch New Zealand, Dead End Derby is a non-profit, all girl flat track league that is skater owned and operated. The League has grown from a handful of girls with a vision, to a rapidly expanding league, with new ‘fresh meat‘ being trained up as they join. League members ages and backgrounds are widely varied, ranging from registered nurses, accountants, civil servants, to tattooists, forklift drivers, circus performers and students, all united by a love of Derby.

In Act I, Flox will interpret each song from the new album into iconic images, which will be uniquely brought to life both during the performance and as an exhibition of original limited edition prints in the theatre foyers. In Act II, Fly My Pretties will deliver a set filled with a range of their classics plus a few surprises from Live at Bats, The Return Of… and A Story.Led by Barnaby Weir, the latest Fly My Pretties family will combine an exciting and diverse mix of established and up-and-coming New Zealand talent, with performances in Christchurch, Dunedin, Wellington and Auckland.

Last Thursday witnessed a delicious meal of sounds. Adorning a rather new age name, the first band up, Poetry in Motion provided an array of varying tastes of jazz from slow, solid ballads such as “Polaris” by Glen Wagstaff and “Memories” by Sam Blakelock to more funky, playful tunes like “This Is A Delicious Pastie, Bro” (Blakelock) and “Rush Hour” by Luke Belcher. Jazz was not the only flavour on the menu. Featured guest, Amy Jansen stunned the audience with her version of Oh-Land’s “Wolf and I”, ranging her voice from a haunting, harmonised softness to an all encompassing belt. The Harry Harrison Quartet were the second band on the stage. Emanating ease and experience, as a performer Harry Harrison was the comedian of the night, allowing the audience to really settle in for the second half. Tunes such as “Old Friends”, introduced as a piece in the ‘guitarists key’ “without all those flats”, and a groovy piece , “Tasty Mutton”, were prime examples of the band’s tightness of groove and familiarity in each others playing strengths. With Mike Story on upright bass, Darren Pickering on keys and Andy Keegan on drums The Harry Harrison Quartet was a joy to behold. New Music Collective has tried to create an intimate, welcoming cabaretstyle atmosphere. A place where you can relax with a drink, discovering unique musical palettes and hidden creativity .These concerts are not just for the extended jazz family but are open to anyone who is looking for an opportunity to really connect with some music, either through performance or simply listening – an experience in itself.

New Music Collective is currently organising a grand Jazz Gala, featuring some top jazz musicians from around New Zealand who will give workshops and the event will culminate in a night of fantastic music. Keep Wednesday 2nd November free and stay tuned! If you can’t make it out to the actual gigs, do not fret! Tune in to Plains FM every second Friday from 4.30pm for “Falling Through the Cracks”, a radio show proudly sponsored by the CPIT Jazz School and hosted by Tamara Smith. “The show often uses live recordings taken from the NMC performances and each show features an interview with guests who will often play live in the studio and share what they are up to in ‘the life of a muso’.” Visit the website (plainsfm.org.nz) to hear the show by saxophonist and music-maker Reuben Derrick talking about field recordings and his time spent in Sri Lanka with Richard Nunns, expert in traditional Maori instruments.
