elcome to the Town Council’s Winter Newsletter 2013.
Great news - Keynsham won Silver Gilt in the South West in Bloom competition this year (last year we won Silver) and there were many compliments from the judges - congratulations to all the entries in “It’s Your Neighbourhood” categories - they were all given certificates at the Keynsham in Bloom awards evening in September; this is one of the highlights of our year when the green fingers of the town come together to celebrate another successful horticulture year. Representatives from all categories, private gardens, schools, businesses, allotments, places of worship and community groups attended and all the entries were displayed both on a screen and on the boards around the hall so we could all enjoy their achievements.

The Youth Fest also took place in September in the Memorial Park where a number of local charities provided stalls and local music and dance took place on the bandstand. The “topping out” ceremony took place at the Keynsham Regeneration project on the 23rd of October, this marks the highest point and is an ancient tradition that brings goodwill, prosperity, health and well being to the development. On Friday the 29th of November, the Victorian Evening with the traditional turning on of the Christmas lights will take place. I personally hope that we might see a flurry of snow this year to add to the atmosphere but there are some that do not agree! Very warm Christmas greetings to you all from the Town Council.

CHANGE LIVES BY
VOLUNTEERING O
ne Sunday afternoon a month, local older people and volunteers of all ages get together for afternoon tea. Our guests are aged 75 and over, live alone with little contact to friends and family nearby, so the teas are a nice opportunity to leave the four walls behind. It’s been a fantastic 3 years in the region with several new groups launched as well as supporting the long running original groups. I’ve met so many wonderful people… But we need more volunteers to help….

to tea in your own home just a couple of Sunday afternoons a year, downstairs loo and no more than 3 steps, or a suitable community space. It’s lovely when children are involved too. • Coordinating a group –it’s a few flexible hours of admin to make sure the parties happen each month and really make a difference. It is a simple yet very effective idea, and it gives our older guests the knowledge that someone really cares. Most importantly it changes lives - maybe yours too. In particular the Keynsham area group needs a new coordinator to share the role i.e. alternate months, and another driver in the mix. YOUTH FEST O
n 21st September Keynsham Town Council held the third Keynsham Youth Fest. This year the event also received sponsorship from Curo, Keynsham Lions, Eduserve, Bath & North East Somerset Council, and Willmott Dixon. There were live performances on the Bandstand from Dance troupe Dark Angels and hip-hop act Scribes, Signpost Puppet Theatre, The Original Spinners and Changing Ways (DJ). Crucial BMX put on scooter demonstrations at the skate park and Keynsham Town Juniors put on a football tournament in a large inflatable football pitch. Local youth organisations also ran stalls on the day providing information on a range of services available to young people in the town.

KEYNSHAM COMMUNITY TASK FORCE The Task Force have been officially launched at the Youth Fest 2013. They are now taking requests for tasks from the community and are choosing which jobs to take on. They have completed painting the bins in the Memorial Park and have thrown down the gauntlet at the last PACT (Police and Community Together) meeting and invited tasks. ollowing the judging of this year’s successful Keynsham In Bloom an award ceremony was held at St. John’s Church Hall on 24th September to present the winners with cups and prizes. The hall was a delight to the eyes, with photographic display boards showing the garden and allotments entries for this year and was decorated with plants and garden props kindly donated by Keynsham Garden Centre. Councillor Gill Hellier and Denise James (Chair of the In Bloom Working Party) led the proceedings and presented prizes and certificates.

The overall winner for Keynsham In Bloom 2013 was Mrs L Fox and the Most Inspiring Garden Award went to Mr W B Jackson. Thanks are given to the photographers D & D Carrington who offered their services free of charge to take photos of the gardens and allotments during judging and attended the presentation to photograph the winners and to Christine Potter who had the difficult task of judging all the entries. It is with pleasure that we can announce that the town of Keynsham was awarded a Silver Gilt in the South West in Bloom Competition 2013. St Keyna Townswomens Guild meet every second Tuesday of the month between 9.45 am and 11.45 am in the Fear Hall, High Street, Keynsham.
Keynsham and Saltford History Group are asking anyone with memories of the First World War to add them to an archive for future generations, ahead of the conflict’s 100th anniversary next year.
There are always lots of interesting speakers covering wide ranging subjects. Sub groups meet on other days and these include Art, Books, Outings, Skittles, Walkers, Scrabble and many more.
The history group is taking part in the Somerset Remembers project to collect stories and documents relating to people in the country who lived through the war.
It is most enjoyable way to make new friends or embark on a new hobby so do come along to our next meeting - enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and you will be made most welcome.
Brian Vowles is coordinating the information for the society and said that it is important to recognise that the lives of those at home, as well as those who left to fight, were transformed by the conflict – often forever. Victorian Evening The annual Keynsham Victorian Evening will take place on Friday 29th November 2013 and the theme this year is Christmas Bells. The Town Council have arranged a full programme of entertainment including stalls, fairground rides, workshops, together with a programme of music on the stage. PLEASE TURN OVER FOR MORE INFO

Acts include Keynsham Light Opera Group, Keynsham Brass Band, St. John’s Church Youth Choir Team, 2386 Air Cadet Squadron, The Riverside Choir and Totally Maracas. This year’s compere, Jimmy Mack will entertain the audience between acts with his balloon sculpting skills. The event will start at 6.15pm when the Town Crier will lead a procession of the Upshot Circus Arts, 2386 Air Cadet Squadron, Keynsham children who have made giant willow Christmas Bells at earlier workshops and Santa who will be arriving by sleigh. The official opening of the evening will start at 6.30pm on the stage at the junction of Charlton Road and the High Street, with a welcome by the Chairman of B&NES, Councillor Neil Butters and the Chairman of Keynsham Town Council, Councillor Gill Hellier followed by the Christmas lights switch on at approximately 7.00pm.
The Town Council will be running a children’s ‘Christmas Bell’ colouring competition prior to the Victorian Evening and the prize winners will receive, on the night, certificates and prizes. The overall winner of the colouring competition will be switching on the Christmas lights. There are still spaces available on the children’s Christmas Bell pre-event workshop (enquiries Keynsham Town Council - 0117 9868683). Earlier in the day, on 29th November, shop window displays, decorated in a Christmas Bell theme, will be judged and the winners announced as part of the ceremony. Once again, the popular craft fair in the Fear Hall will be running, and the churches will be offering refreshments, some entertainment and stalls. In the grounds of St. John’s Church, children and parents will be able to meet, say hello and stroke donkeys from Horseworld. The Keynsham Library will be opening its doors for the evening and people will be entertained at this venue by a Punch and Judy Show 7.15 – 8.00 p.m. The local fire station will be open for the evening so that children can take a closer look at the engines. Along the High Street stalls will be selling gifts,

festive food and drink. A few outdoor stalls are still available (enquiries Keynsham Town Council - 0117 9868683) In the Key Centre we will be holding some drop in Christmas tree decoration craft workshops for children. There will also be displays in the Key centre held by Willmott Dixon updating on the re-development of Keynsham and Bath & North East Somerset Council will be holding a display about the Time Capsule. Due to the re-development of the town centre, we are unable to obtain a street closure for part of Temple Street this year and hence the majority of the fun fair rides will be held on a section of Ashton Way Car Park. The public should be aware that the usual street closures of the High Street and the bottom of Charlton Road, will be closed to traffic from 3.30pm until 10.00pm. Residents are advised to use the free Park and Ride service based at the Co-op Store running to Ashton Way Car Park. The evening is funded by Keynsham Town Council and supported by Keynsham and Saltford Churches Together. This year’s event is currently sponsored and supported by I. J. McGill Transport and the Christmas Tree outside of St John’s Church is sponsored by WPC Software Ltd, and it is hoped that other sponsors will support this very popular community event. Exercise doesn’t have to be something that you dread each week and to ensure that you stick to your New Years resolution of exercising more make sure that you find something that you love and that you find fun. If you’re looking to start running why not set yourself a goal, maybe its a sponsored run or even a half marathon by the end of the year! You could join a running club or get
some of your friends and family to run with you so that you can encourage each other. But please remember these safety tips: Make sure you are visible. Wear bright coloured clothes, preferably with reflective pieces on them. Don’t run alone at night. Always carry ID on you or your mobile phone Be careful when running listening to music, cutting off your sense of hearing means you can’t hear oncoming cars or cyclists Don’t make assumptions about drivers. Don’t assume that drivers can see you. Exercise classes can also be a great way to get fit, make friends and have fun. There are so many exercise classes that you could try from Yoga and Pilates that help develop core strength and tone the body to Zumba and high impact aerobics that will really get you burning calories and toning all at the same time as shaking your stuff!

HISTORIC MOVE FOR
KEYNSHAM MOSAICS T
he Keynsham Millennium Mosaics have been relocated and renovated following an agreement between Bath & North East Somerset Council and Keynsham Town Council. The mosaics were created by a community group at the turn of the century to celebrate important milestones over the past 100 years of the town. They were previously displayed in the Town Centre prior to the regeneration project starting. The mosaics are now relocated around Keynsham Memorial Park. The Town Council has now agreed to adopt the Mosaics. The Vice Chairman of Bath & North East Somerset Council, Councillor Neil Butters, met with the Chairman of Keynsham Town Council, Councillor Clive Fricker to receive a peppercorn payment for the transfer of the Mosaics. The mosaics have been cleaned and renovated by the original artist Roz Wates and moved by Willmott Dixon – the Council’s town centre regeneration contractors. They depict: • Keynsham in Roman Times • Legend of St Keyna
Councillor Neil Butters, Chairman of Bath & North East Somerset Council, said, “We are very pleased to handover the mosaics to the Town Council which symbolise the new millennium. There are great changes taking place in Keynsham town centre and both councils will be really pleased to have found a place for these symbols of history.” Councillor Gill Hellier, Chairman of Keynsham Town Council, said, “We are pleased that a number of the mosaics, which were created by the community for the Millennium, have been repaired and are on display in Keynsham Memorial park; these have been handed over to the Town Council for safe keeping. The Keynsham in Bloom working party will play an active role in maintaining them. We hope that in future there may be opportunities to replace those that were permanently damaged.”

CEREMONY T
opping out is a ceremony that marks the structural completion of a building.
It is performed to ensure there are no evil spirits trapped in the building when the envelope is sealed, and that prosperity and good luck for the future will ensue. This Ceremony marks the highest point of the building and is an ancient tradition that brings goodwill, prosperity, health and well being to the development. The Ceremony also provided an opportunity for a client, design team, contractor and workforce to toast the success of the building. In Saxon times, a yew tree branch was placed on the uppermost part of the building. This originates from the roof gardens that were popular thousands of years ago in Persia and were the last point of the building to be constructed. The trees were essential for shade and so were regarded as a symbol that the building was complete and ready for occupation.Wine, oil, corn and salt were sprinkled on the roof once the tree was planted. Wine symbolised fertility and wisdom, the oil - liberty and prosperity, the corn - to ripen and grow prosperity into abundance, and the salt purity and hospitality. Most intriguingly, Topping Out ceremonies often featured human sacrifice. It is alleged that Architects were chosen as the best qualified to undertake the role of guardian spirit to their own creation. Fortunately this practice has long since died out! Around the world, Topping Out celebrations vary widely. In Korea they mark the moment by eating a pigs head; in Germany laurel wreaths are hung down the chimney and pork pies are eaten, and in Malaysia, they would sacrifice a slave. However diverse the celebrations, all usually involve food, drink and a toast to the success of the project and workforce so far.

The smell of the fruits and spices and the lovely red colour all invoke Christmas, and it tastes wonderful... Ingredients: Makes 4 glasses Cranberry juice (we used a very seasonal cranberry and pomegranate juice, but plain cranb erry or other variations are fine), 4 cinnamon sticks , 8 star anise, Lemon, Orange Method: Slice the lemon and orange. Put four slices aside to garnish. Put all the ingredients into a pan and warm through, stirring well. Ladle into cups or warmed glasses (if poured directly into cold glasse s they might crack). Make sure each glass gets a cinnamon stick. Decorate with the slices of lemon. Delicious and warming - perfect for Chris tmas!

Q: What is your experience as a Youth Worker? A: I was a Church Minister for 14 years and have also been involved in youth work and was involved in setting up two youth clubs and an outreach project in Grangetown, Middlesbrough and then a youth club in Bristol. While I lived in the North East I was also a prison Chaplain in HMP Holme House Prison and worked with young people on remand. I have been a full time youth worker for nearly 10 years working for Bristol City Council and then Bath & North East Somerset Council. Q: What has changed the most in Keynsham since you have worked in the area? A: Seeing young people that I used to work with when they were teenagers, I now bump into them around Keynsham and they are in their twenties and some of them have families of their own. Q: What are the main challenges in your day to day duties? A: Working with people each day can bring different challenges. One of the challenges is supporting young people so they can access support when needed. It can be sad when a young person is faced with an issue that they don’t feel they can talk to anyone about, especially when it starts to effect their behaviour and their life and school life starts
to suffer. In a lot of cases if they had spoken to someone they trusted earlier they would not have felt so trapped by their problems and could have received the relevant support and help. I have seen young people work through difficult life issues that could have scarred them and they have gone on to become stronger and resilient people. Q: What do you feel the future holds for Keynsham’s Youth Service? A: Fortunately for Keynsham, when a lot of frontline services including youth services are being cut due to the current climate, Keynsham Town Council has chosen to take on the Youth Service for Keynsham, so it directly provides opportunities and activities for local young people. The Town Council see the young people in the town as a very important part of the community so I am hoping that we are able to meet the challenges as the Town grows in the near future. Q. What do you think are the best things about Keynsham? A: Keynsham is a nice place to live; it’s handy because it is between Bath and Bristol. People are generally friendly, there are some very good community groups working for the benefit of the community. Also the majority of young people are great, are not involved in crime, anti-social behaviour, or go round in gangs, carry knives or are drug addicts.
