News from MIDSOMER NORTON KUMON STUDY CENTRE: The Study Centre, which operates from Somervale School, Mondays and Wednesdays after-school hours, continues to thrive, as more students in our local community take up Kumon study. The Study Centre, which is run by Kumon Instructor Janet Russell, offers a personalised learning programme, whereby students practice their Maths and/or English skills on a daily basis, gaining confidence, speed and accuracy. Janet says: “Many of our students come to the Centre because they do not feel confident at school, or they want to revisit previously learned skills in their own time and at their own pace. There are many reasons why some children might have missed out on basic maths and English skills and Kumon study gives them an opportunity to either catch up, or consolidate previous learning. Some students feel that they can learn more in their own time and want to pursue their studies further and to a greater depth than might be possible during the school day. For whatever reason students choose to join our Kumon Centre, they all continue to thrive as they gain confidence and skills, moving themselves towards being an independent learner. Kumon is a longer term study programme and is not designed to “get children through exams”. This is the main difference between us and private tuition. Kumon study enables children to work at their own level and in their own time; it gets them into a daily study habit, preparing them for secondary school and beyond; it teaches them to follow given examples and apply skills to further problems; it promotes perseverance; it teaches them to think for themselves; it enables them to organise their own learning and in turn gives them the confidence to further their own learning independently.” How does it work? Students drop in to the Study Centre either once or twice a week, so that Janet can view their progress and talk about short and long term targets to be achieved. Whilst work is being marked, the students continue their studies by learning number bonds, multiplication tables and solving problems for maths, and by practising handwriting/ spelling and reading for English. During the week, students complete a workbook of 5 or 10 pages, each day, to continue their learning outside the Study Centre.

You can join the Kumon Centre by contacting Janet on 01761 453720 or by emailing her on midsomernorton@kumoncentre.co.uk. Visit the website by Google – Midsomer Norton Kumon Centre for more information.

Chairman’s Visit

Dance Umbrella for Welton On Wednesday 24th March, a group of special dancers from Welton Primary School took part in the annual Dance Umbrella. The theme of the dance was inspired by ‘Food Glorious Food’ in Oliver, the Musical. The Y5 and Y6 pupils had great fun choreographing the dance with the use of bowls (which were only dropped a couple of times!). The teaching team are really proud of the pupils at Welton Primary School! Many thanks to the parents for their help in the dramatic costumes and make-up!

In September 2009 Longvernal Primary School started a Gardening Club because the children wanted to build their own Keyhole Garden having seen them through their international link with a Ugandan school. They planted lots of vegetables as well as flowers – ending up with two big bags of potatoes which were donated to the Harvest Festival. The idea of growing things ‘took off’ and next the children became involved in the South West in Bloom competition spending lots of time planting troughs and tubs of summer bedding around the school to brighten up the grounds as well as planting the huge tubs of bedding on the High Street in Midsomer Norton. In recognition of the children’s efforts their teacher entered the Chairman’s Award competition to recognise the school that had shown the greatest commitment to growing their own food and improving their local environment. Imagine how delighted we all were to win ‘Highly Commended’ with a prize of £50 worth of gardening vouchers in our first year! After a term off through the worst of the weather Gardening Club has started again. We spent some of our winnings on lots more compost, a small greenhouse so we could grow our own seeds instead of buying all our stock and a variety of patio planters to develop our new Courtyard Garden area. On Friday 30th April, the children were thrilled to welcome councillor Bryan Chalker to the school, in acknowledgement of the efforts that won them ‘Highly Commended’ in the Chairman’s Awards.

The Chair of Bath and North East Somerset Council, Mr Chalker and his wife, visited Farrington Gurney Primary School on Friday 23rd April to inaugurate an apple tree that the school had won for their entry in the Chairman’s Education Award competition. Farrington were runner up in the competition for “the school that has shown the greatest commitment to growing their own food and improving their school and local environment through gardening”. The school runs a lunch-time gardening club under the supervision of two very committed grandparents, Ian and Ann Thompson. They use grow bags and planters to grow potatoes, runner beans, tomatoes, lettuce, herbs and much more. Well done to all at Farrington.

ARTiculate The children at Welton primary School have been working very hard on their recent project called ARTiculate. The objective of the project was to deliver a creative, artsbased project which encourages children to think about their bodies, what they eat and how they can look after themselves so that they stay healthy. The project ran in 3 sessions where the pupils discussed the 3 topics of our bodies and exercise, our bodies and what we eat and our bodies and our minds. During each session the children made a sculpture to demonstrate their learning. All children enjoyed learning in a creative and innovative way and all of the sculptures are on display at Welton primary School.

On Friday the 19th of March, St. Johns school hosted a Ceilidh in the school hall. Ceilidh is Irish line, barn and circle dancing. Year 3 and 4 had the choice to practice all the dances in the studio for 6 weeks every Monday lunchtime, and the orchestra also practiced every Monday after school. On the night of the Ceilidh two special visitors from Northern Ireland came to call out the steps and play the guitar and violin. Mrs. Stearn’s son also played the violin. Not only the pupils who had learnt the dances joined in, but some people from the audience also got to join in the event, and even some of the staff! Mr. Callaway, Mrs. Yarlett, Mrs. Flagg and Miss. Courtney also enjoyed the dances. Later on the orchestra played a few pieces of music while the audience was delighted by the soup we made earlier that morning. We all want to thank the staff who gave up their time to help the pupils of St. Johns on that particular night. Thank you very much! Written by pupils from St John’s School, Midsomer Norton

Working together On 1st January 2010, Farrington Gurney Primary School and St Mary’s Writhlington became a soft federation under the Executive Headship of Sue Jones. Small primary schools nationwide are finding it increasingly hard to fill Headship positions and a solution to this, is partnering with another school. The collaboration aims to raise standards, improve services and increase opportunities for staff and children. So far, the partnership has proved to be a great success, with staff enjoying a joint team-building inset day and regular meetings. The pupils of the two schools are set to have a joint sporting activities day in May and recently, the two school councils met to discuss further opportunities. Plans already include a joint residential camp for Years 5 and 6 and joint school trips. It is wonderful to see the children working together and having such fun doing so!

‘Jazz’ visits Trinity Trinity school had a visit from ‘Jazz’ the tawny owl and her little friend the field mouse. All of the children were able to learn about tawny owls, their habitats and habits and when asked what they thought the children all said they loved having an owl and a mouse in assembly and they didn’t realise an owl can turn it’s head right around!

James Christopher hairdressing has moved a short distance from Holly Court Midsomer Norton to the ‘Old School Hall’ in Rackvernal Road. James bought the derelict hall in 2007 and has designed and project managed the renovation and conversion. James has managed to create a contemporary interior while retaining original features of the building. This extends to the exterior where the building has been renovated and landscaped. The new salon provides a unique experience with a spacious interior operating on the ground and mezzanine floors. James is joined by his highly experienced staff that together has helped build a high quality reputation. The new salon has a friendly and welcoming atmosphere and already has an extensive client base. James and his team would like to extend an invitation to both current and new clients to visit the salon where he assures his team will provide personal attention and a very enjoyable experience. www.jameschristopherhairdressing.co.uk

It is so important to take time to do nice things for ourselves. Especially for those of us who spend much of our time helping and caring for others, it is too easy to neglect ourselves and become worn out, stressed out and run down. Self-pampering is not about being selfish. It’s about taking proper care of yourself and treating yourself as kindly as you treat others. We spend so much time and effort caring for our spouses, children, pets, friends, family members, employers and employees. Add to that numerous volunteer activities, errands, housework, family functions, meetings, etc. - and there isn’t much time left for caring for ourselves.

you may need to say “no” to various extra obligations in your life. So many of us take on responsibilities which aren’t even ours. We have various reasons for doing this, such as wanting to be liked, not wanting to let others down, wanting to help lighten the load for someone else, or simply because we don’t know how to say “NO”. However, this “pleaser” mentality can get us into big trouble as we take on more and more responsibility, and end up with less and less time for ourselves.

We need to make caring for ourselves a priority; otherwise we will continue to put it off. Set an appointment with yourself every day, or at least once a week. Block the time out in your calendar and do not let anything interfere. As much as you do for others, you deserve this time for yourself. In order to make time for yourself,

Eating together as a family more regularly is a good way to bring up healthy-eating children. The fact that you are all sitting down together for a meal will make meal times more of an occasion. This will help you to plan what your family is eating more carefully and as soon as you start thinking about the food that you’re eating, you are taking the right steps to get your children to eat healthily. Teaching your children about healthy eating requires common sense. Forbidden foods will be more appealing to them. Instead, make these foods a treat for eating the healthier options first. Keep the treats lower in moderation and that way everyone is happy and your children will start to enjoy eating healthier foods.

Children are drawn to foods that have different shapes, and bright colours. There are many fruits that you can incorporate into cool shakes and smoothies. Be creative, instead of handing your child a whole apple, why not put it together with other similar coloured fruit and create a smoothie like Hulk Juice, or split an orange and, together with other fruit, create a face on the plate, a little creativity and fun will make a lot of difference. Putting more vegetables in their diet will truly make a difference to their healthy eating habits. Training them to eat healthily at an early age will also

it’s their favourite super hero’s favourite power food. If you make it fun then they will want to join in. It is our responsibility to make sure our children grow up to be as healthy as possible. Child obesity is rising constantly and it needs to be stopped. Teaching our children about healthy eating is the best way possible for them to become healthy adults. lead them to lesser health problems in their adulthood. Again, create a meal that’s good to look at for the child and they will find it more fun to eat. Use the vegetables to create a picture and you will be amazed at the difference in you child’s attitude towards it.

You will need patience to make your children love a large variety of vegetable. But if they see that you are also eating them, they will be more willing to start eating them too. Tell them

Go For Fingers Foods: Sometimes kids, especially younger ones, don’t like to eat a whole sandwich or bowl of food. Instead you can try preparing cut up cubes of cheese, grapes, baby tomatoes, carrot sticks, pretzels, mini crackers, and ham cubes. Finger foods are really very appealing for all ages! Place in a container with individual compartments or just a standard one for a fun lunch. You can also try cutting sandwiches into small rectangles or triangles for easier eating.

LUNCH BOX IDEA’S We all know how difficult it can be to come up with different, healthy and fun lunch box ideas - and that’s why we end up packing up the same lunches over and over again! To help you (and your kids!) avoid packed lunch boredom, we have collected some simple ideas to spice up your child’s lunch box. Change the Bread: Just like adults, kids can get bored with sandwiches. Why not try using the same fillings, but add excitement by changing the bread. You can try pitta bread, bagels or tortilla wraps. For a real change, try packing crackers or breadsticks separately from the filling. Your child then assembles the crackers and filling into sandwiches, or dips the breadsticks in. Great fun! Try a Salad: Forget about your typical lettuce and tomato salad - no self-respecting child would get excited by that! Instead try a pasta salad or potato salad. Cook and drain the pasta or potatoes and mix with a little mayonnaise or olive oil, the add some cut up veggies such as corn kernels, tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots. If you like you can also include some sliced turkey, chicken or ham. Pack into a plastic container. Make those sandwiches fun: If you decide to pack a traditional sandwich, try cutting the bread with fun shapes using a cookie cutter. You’ll be amazed at how a boring cheese sandwich will get gobbled up when shaped into a flower or dinosaur!

Pinwheels Anyone? Instead of sandwiches try pinwheels. Cut the crust from two slices of bread, and flatten using a rolling pin. Spread thinly with cream cheese, and add a slice of ham. Roll each slice into a log shape. Wrap in cling film and place in freezer for about 30 minutes. Unwrap and cut into pinwheel rounds. Dip It: Kids love dipping stuff. For an easy and nutritious lunch snack you can cut apple wedges and serve with a strawberry or peanut butter dip. Cut up veggies are brilliant served with a hummus or cream cheese dip. For a more substantial lunch add pieces of pita bread, breadsticks or crackers. Lunch Box notes Pack a lunch box note every so often to remind your kids that you are thinking of them! Older kids will enjoy jokes, trivia and tongue twisters! . Be Creative: Think outside the box! Pack mini pizza slices, mini hamburgers, meatballs or chicken drumsticks. Add some potato wedges on the side. Or try tortilla chips with strips of cheese, turkey and sliced tomatoes on the side. Add a sour cream and/or guacamole dip for instant lunch time nachos, perfect for older children or teens. Or how about some baked savoury mini muffins using chopped, cooked bacon and chives or grated cheese and ham? Sweet fruit mini muffins will be a big hit too.

It’s a Bird, It’s a Plane ... Boys love playing superhero, and if you’re having a birthday party just for boys, a fun kids’ birthday party idea and activity would be to have them come as their favourite superhero. You can also transform the guests into superheroes at the children’s birthday party with the help of some shop bought or homemade masks and capes. The boys can even make their own masks, and one birthday party activity can be for them to use their imaginations and make up a brand new superpower.

 When planning children’s birthday parties, a single theme that combines decorations and activities can be lots of fun and keep the children entertained (a fun thought for the grownups!). But there’s no need to wear yourself out with complicated arrangements before the party’s even started. Here are some children’s birthday ideas that will be enjoyable for the kids ... and easy for busy grownups to plan!



Go For the Gold Think Olympics as a theme for a children’s birthday party. Depending on when the birthday party is taking place, you can do simple variations on summer or winter events such as gymnastics and relay races and set up your party space for indoor or outdoor play. Hang flags from different countries and buy foil-covered chocolate circles in gold and silver to award as “medals” to all the kids participating. You can decorate your kids’ birthday party cake like the Olympic flag or, instead serve cupcakes coloured and arranged like the Olympics flag circles: blue, yellow, black green and red.

It’s Tea Time! If your children’s birthday party is going to be an allgirl affair, how about having the birthday girl host a tea party? It can be simple or fancy, depending on the girls’ ages and what’s easily available to you. If the girls are little, use different-coloured napkins to set the table prettily and serve iced tea in plastic cups. For older girls, using china cups and saucers would be an elegant way to celebrate at your child’s birthday party. If you don’t want to risk your own fine china, look around at local charity shops for a mix-and-match variety of dishes.

Picture This ... With a Instant Photo Guest Book With a Instant Photo Guest Book, you can capture the magic moments with instant Fuji, Polaroid or Digital photos at your children’s birthday party as they’re happening. While the party is going on, taking instant photos can be one of the kids’ birthday party activities. If the children are old enough, they can even be the ones taking the pictures! Together with hand-written messages from party guests, friends and family, you’re creating a personal, one-of-a-kind keepsake that you’ll have long after the party’s over.

Goodnight Moon Margaret Wise Brown

Perhaps the perfect children’s bedtime book, Goodnight Moon is a short poem of goodnight wishes from a young rabbit preparing for--or attempting to postpone--his own slumber. He says goodnight to every object in sight and within earshot, including the “quiet old lady whispering hush.” Clement Hurd’s illustrations are simple and effective, alternating between small ink drawings and wide, brightly coloured views of the little rabbit’s room.

Cricket Tips When fielding during cricket there are many things to think about and consider depending on where you are fielding. Wherever you are fielding you should always be on the balls of your feet so you can react and change direction quickly. If you are caught flat footed you’ll be slower off the mark and potentially give away more runs. Try to anticipate where the ball will go; you can do this by carefully watching the batters shape and movements. This may be a little difficult at first but after a bit of practise will become second nature and you’ll react much quicker to any shots coming your way and field better as a result. When you are fielding close to the boundary and have to throw from the deep, try to aim your throw just above the keepers head and the ball should drop nicely in to his gloves, provided you have a relatively strong throwing arm. When catching close to the wicket, such as in the slips, gulley or short leg, make sure your stance is correct with your feet a shoulder width apart or slightly wider. Spread your weight evenly across both feet, resting lightly on the balls of your feet, with your knees flexed. Keep your hands together, close to the ground with your fingers pointing down. Keep your head up with your eyes level and stay alert. When catching the ball in close, watch the ball all the way into your hands, allowing the ball to come to you; don’t try to snatch at it. ‘Give’ with the ball as you catch, cushioning the impact. When catching in the deep, try and catch the ball at eye level and cushion the ball into your chest. The ball can come to you at any time so it is really important you stay alert and awake so you can stop that vital run or take a match winning catch.

There is nothing more frustrating than watching the children stay inside all summer watching television when the weather is beautiful outside! a world that once was! Egypt has some of the finest cuisine available and you can relax and unwind in one of their stunning hotels. If you’re still seeking some adventure when travelling to Egypt, book a trip on one of their wonderful safaris where you can travel the fields while watching some of nature’s most breathtaking wildlife! Of course not everyone wishes to leave their hometowns during school holidays because there are so many wonderful things to do there as well! Round up the family and head to the theatre! Catching a live show can be wonderful and you can all partake in the culture! Make it a tradition and have everyone see something that they like by rotating turns of who gets to pick the show you go to! Taking the family to a museum can be a great idea as well for a family break. Don’t take them to the same war museum that you’ve been to already on many past family trips; take them to a bug museum or a bat museum. Anything that is unique and different than anything you’ve done before will have a great impact on everyone in the family and it is bound to be one of the most memorable family breaks you’ll ever have! However, if your family really is a bunch of war buffs, you may choose to take them to a war museum. Still put a twist on this and take them to a war re-enactment museum! These places often have a battle in the field, using either very old, nonworking weapons or using fake weapons. Sometimes, the soldiers will even travel back to their barracks to eat dinner and it is here that you will get a good idea of what life was really like in wartime. Whatever you do this family break, make it original and something that will always be remembered as the most memorable family break ever!

Cut around the flower giving your paper about a half-inch border of patterned paper. Tape chenille stem to the back of your flower. Make sure the tape is secure by pressing onto the tape with your fingernail. Trim ends of chenille to the length you desire, depending on what you are using as a vase. If making a handheld bouquet, don’t trim the chenille; simply tie a ribbon bow around them all.

Fridge Tulip Kids can make this pretty magnet for a gift or just to cheer up the house during Spring! You will need: Polymer clay in green, and either red, yellow or orange and a contrasting colour Magnet Strong glue

Lady Bugs What you will need: Smooth, round or oval rocks, washed and dried Acrylic craft paint in colors of your choice Black acrylic craft paint 2 wiggle eyes for each ladybug Black permanent marker Acrylic matte sealer spray White craft glue Instructions: Completely wash and dry all rocks. Paint rocks in desired colors, allow to dry. Apply second and third coats

if needed. Lighter colors will require more coats than darker shades. Paint head on using black acrylic craft paint. There is no pattern needed, simply paint about ¼ of the rock black in the “front.” Use a black permanent marker to draw a straight line down the center of the rock, starting at the center of the base of the “head.” Dip the end of a large paint brush, or the eraser of a pencil, in black craft paint. Dot on the spots, reloading with paint after every dot. Once the paint is dry, spray the rock(s) with acrylic sealer spray. Allow sealer to dry completely. Using white craft glue, attach wiggle eyes and let dry.

Instructions: From red, orange or yellow polymer clay, shape an egg shape. Trim the top into points. This is your tulip. Roll out the green clay to form a stem and leaves, and press into place. Make a sausage shape and shape into an initial. Press it onto the tulip. Ask an adult to bake your tulip in the oven according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Glue a magnet onto the back.

Landing near its victims, it uses its hind feet and long wing claws to crawl close enough to feed. The built-in heat sensors in its nose detect blood flowing near the surface of the skin. It pierces the skin with small razor-sharp teeth to get to the blood.
