SPORT RELIEF Pupils at Norton St Philip First School took part in an afternoon of running on Wednesday 19th March to raise money for Sport Relief. As part of their numeracy lessons, Kingfisher class designed and measured a symmetrical 400m route that took the children around the nearby Church Mead. All children along with some teachers and support staff walked, jogged and ran four times around the route to complete the mile. Despite only having 47 pupils, the children have so far raised in excess of £100. A spokesperson from the school said: “The children were so proud they had designed, measured and marked out the route themselves. It was also really lovely to see the older children who’d completed their mile encouraging and running with the younger pupils. It was a fantastic way of combining numeracy and PE as well as raising money for a great cause.”

3D MAP BUILD On Monday 31st March children at Christ Church First School spent the day designing, fixing and painting as they created a giant 3D map of Frome town. Each class, including the Nursery completed four of the giant jigsaw puzzle pieces which when put together created a map in the hall which measured 6 metres by 5 metres. The base map was drawn by the school’s art coordinator, Georgina Muxworthy. The children then had to use books and computers to research different parts of the town including the Frome Town football ground, the Merlin theatre, the Cinema, Catherine Hill and Victoria Park. Head teacher Sarah Bullmore said “ the finished model was absolutely incredible and geographically correct!.The children were completely engaged and excited by the task and the parents enjoyed coming in to view the exhibition and tryng to spot their house”.

ST GEORGE’S DAY AT WESTBURY The tradition of celebrating St Georges Day (23rd April) continued at Westbury Junior School again this year. The children enjoyed a bouncy castle, making a toast to the Queen (led by the Westbury town crier Sean Price), coming to school in English themed fancy dress and enjoying yummy ‘St George’ biscuits. Being the centenary year of the outbreak of World War One, the school also focused the learning of the day around ‘bravery’ and the children found out what life was like for soldiers fighting in the trenches at that time. They were very lucky to be able to work with a man called Steve Williams, who came to school dressed as an English soldier and shared his replica of a trench with the whole school. He taught them all about the weapons that were used and some children were lucky enough to try on helmets and experience how heavy some of the guns were. They were also very keen to learn about some of the more unsavoury aspects of trench life like rats and lice, trench foot and how 100 men shared one bucket for their toilet. Steve’s enthusiastic manner really inspired the children and helped them to gain a real understanding of this landmark event in their history and how horrific it was for the soldiers. Rounding off the day, the children could share details and photos of their own family members that fought in the war giving a chance to reflect on the human side of this conflict. A fantastic day for all at Westbury Junior School.

OAKFIELD ACADEMY RAISE MONEY FOR SPORT RELIEF Oakfield Academy have been in a fundraising frenzy for Sport Relief! The week rammed with activities for every year group ran from Monday 17th March to the 21st March, culminating in a Sports related MUFTI day and the Sport Relief mile. Oakfield prefects, led
by PE Teacher Pete Fowler arranged and oversaw the entire week with events taking place before school at breaktime and lunchtimes. Pupils also spent time during PSHE to better understand issues such as poverty and child labour. Part of this involved pupils producing pledge cards describing why pupils wanted to raise money for disadvantaged children in the UK and Africa. The cards were then displayed in the Academy hall for other pupils to read. Activites during the week included, Wake and Shake exercise before school, “beat the Teacher” Penalty shoot-out, Fifa 14 tournament, coin throw, Netball shoot-out, Dodgeball, Cake sales and finally MUFTI day and the sport relief mile. Pupils took part in the mile and raised sponsorship money for completing the mile in the most imaginative ways that they could think up. Entrants included, 3 legged running, cartwheeling, wheelbarrowing, dribbling a football, stilt walking, spacehopping and many many more... “It was an amazing week and the sport relief mile was incredibly fun!” said Fern, a year 7 pupil. Mr Fowler would like to congratulate the year 8 prefects for their commitment and efforts in organising and helping to run the events. In turn the prefects would like to thank Headteacher Miss Wilkes for her enthusiasm and support in making the week possible. A fun week had by all at Oakfield Academy!

SCIENCE WEEK AT TRINITY FIRST SCHOOL Trinity First School had a fantastic Science week. It was a fun way to end a busy Spring term. The school hall was transformed into a ‘hands-on’ Science fair for four days and each class had a session where the children were ‘WOWed’ while making lava lamps, cloud dough, slime, snow and giant bubbles, alongside many other enquiry provoking activities. All children, from Reception to year 4, experimented, in different ways, with M&Ms and similar sweets. They enjoyed it so much that many were inspired to carry on experimenting when they went home, bringing their findings back to school the next day. The outdoor space was used for ‘Forest School’ activities and the school pond was well and truly dipped! Each day a different year group went to visit Explore @ Bristol, which they thoroughly enjoyed. An experience many want to repeat with their parents and carers. It has been a brilliant week.

YEAR 5 ART WORKSHOP AT BLACK SWAN ARTS CAN WE EAT BISCUITS EVERY DAY? As part of their topic “Can we eat biscuits every day?” the children in Key Stage 1 at Vallis First School visited several cafes around Frome asking questions about biscuits. Whilst they were visiting The Old Bakehouse in Cheap Street, Robin the baker challenged them to design their own Biscuit based on the character from the book they have been studying – ‘Biscuit Bear’ The children had a fun time designing their biscuits and as a prize Robin displayed all of the entries and chose a winner from each class and made their designs into biscuits. The Old Bakehouse also made Biscuit Bears for all the children in Key Stage 1. The children and staff of Vallis would like to say a huge thank you to those cafes who were happy to participate in our survey and very kindly donated some free samples, particularly The Old Bakehouse, Paccamorra Café, La Strada and Costa.

Staff at the workshop showed pupils what it was like to be a curator of an art show and pupils were able to see work exhibited by local school children (including our own Oakfield Academy pupils). The pupils then designed and made hand puppets loosely based on themselves! The students were wonderfully behaved and full of enthusiasm for the project. “I was very proud of them and their imaginative work”, said Ms Stewart, who is the art teacher at Oakfield Academy.

FAMILY FUN Turn off the TV, lock up the PlayStation and have a great time on a day out with the children. The Whitsun holidays are nearly here and it is a great time to spend some family time together and take some time out from the hustle and bustle of the normal daily routine. Whenever school holiday time comes around, are you left asking the same question? Where can I take my children to experience a great family day out? So how can you make the most of the precious time you and your children get together? If you and your partner have arranged to take some time out of the office, you don’t want to waste it by doing chores while your children sit in front of the TV all day. Family fun, not family friction should be the order of the day. Spending time with your children is also an important aspect of childhood development and happiness. There are plenty of things to do with children in the local area, whether you’re feeling flush, looking for cheap days out or - even better - a free family tourist attraction. We are lucky to have many fantastic places to visit on our doorstep and the coast is only an hour away. Taking your kids on an educational day out can give them and you some of the best fun there is. Choose wisely and they won’t even realise they’re learning whilst playing. There are lots of child-friendly, interactive museums and historical venues around designed to excite and engage your family. Toddlers and young children understand the world around them by touching, so make
sure you’re going to a place where you won’t have to constantly say ‘no – don’t touch. Farms and zoos are a great way to engage kids of all ages and again you can make the trip educational for them. Why not make a list of which animals you definitely want to see. Then once you get there, see who the first person is to spot their favourite animal. It’s always good to make a game out of the experience. Another good game is getting your children to do impressions of each animal. It’s important to make your children aware of what to expect from the animals. Kids have to approach animals carefully and understand animals can get upset if they’re not nice. Some animals may want to rest or to hide. Get as much information as you can before you go about the animals you are going to see. A day at the seaside is the ultimate summer day out and also free. There are loads of things you can do as a family. Why not play games like “Let’s Bury Dad”, Build a line of sandcastles, then see who can squash them the fastest, Make sand angels by lying in the sand and waving your arms backwards and forwards or dig a shallow water pool for perfect splashing.” Here is a checklist of things you may need to remember to make the day run as smoothly as possible: • If you’re headed for an outdoor attraction, don’t forget to bring wellies, raincoats, a brolly, sunscreen, hats and sunglasses - because you never know what the weather will do! • It’s handy to pack up a change of clothes for the kids and a packet of wet wipes can be a godsend! • Bring an emergency snack and drinks • Don’t forget your road map Whatever you do or wherever you go this Summer Holiday, have fun!

PAGES Hayfever
(allergic rhinitis)
Hayfever, or seasonal allergic rhinitis, is condition in which people experience an allergic reaction to different types of pollen during the year. Hayfever is common in the UK, affecting around 1 in 5 people at some stage. Tree pollen often triggers symptoms during the spring, grass pollen is in the air in late spring and summer and pollen from weeds is around from early spring into late autumn. Hayfever can also be caused by mould spores, from late March until November, usually peaking in late summer and early autumn. It is common for people to be allergic to more than one pollen. A person who has perennial rather than seasonal rhinitis experiences
allergy triggers all year round, from allergens such as house dust mites, mould, animal dander and feathers. What are the symptoms of allergic rhinitis? The body’s immune system interprets the allergen, such as pollen, mould or dander, as an invader and responds by releasing a chemical called histamine into the bloodstream. Histamine causes inflammation (swelling and redness) of the sinuses, nose and mucus membranes of the eyes, and triggers sneezing. The swelling reaction is designed to block the allergen from entering the body and sneezing is a method to expel it out of the body. Histamine also allows extra fluids to enter the nasal tissue, resulting in congestion, itching and a runny nose. People with allergic rhinitis have sudden sneezing, a watery nasal discharge, puffy eyes and fatigue. Hayfever symptoms often start during childhood or teens, but can develop at any age. How do I find out what causes my allergies? The season in which your allergy occurs will narrow the list of possible culprits. To pinpoint the cause, your doctor may arrange for you to have a skin test to determine which substances or allergens cause a reaction. The skin test involves placing extracts of potential allergens in a grid on
your arm or back, and then pricking your skin so the extract can enter the outer layer of skin or epidermis. Those areas that become red and itchy indicate which substances trigger a defensive (allergic) response by your immune system. Your doctor may recommend a blood test to check the levels of antibodies produced by the immune system. Elevated levels of certain antibodies can identify particular allergies. Why do only some people get seasonal allergies/hayfever? It is not known why some people get allergies while others do not. However, there is some evidence to suggest that hayfever and other types of allergies are hereditary (passed on from parents to children). People who suffer from asthma oreczema are also more likely to develop hayfever or perennial (year-round) allergic rhinitis. Why are my allergies better on some days and worse on others? While the pollen seasons for particular plants are very consistent within each geographical region, the weather plays a large role in determining how heavy the pollen count (and other potential allergens including mould) will be, both seasonally and daily. The severity of your allergic reaction will generally mirror the rise and fall of the specific allergen count to which you are allergic.
Detecting learning disabilities A child or person with a learning disability has a reduced intellectual ability which may cause problems with everyday activities. They may need support to help develop new skills, to understand complex information as well as interacting with other people. Around 1.5 million people in the UK have some type of learning disability. Learning disability is often confused with learning difficulty or mental healthproblems. The charity Mencap says dyslexia, for example, is a learning difficulty. Unlike a learning disability, dyslexia does not affect a person’s intellect. Mental health problems may be overcome with appropriate treatment, but that is not the case with a learning disability. People with conditions like Down’s syndrome and forms of autism can also have learning disabilities. Nearly
a third of people with epilepsy have some form of learning disability. Most people with a learning disability can lead independent lives, given the appropriate support. A learning disability may be classed as mild, moderate or severe. Mencap says a person with a mild learning disability may need support for something specific like applying for a job. However, full time care may be needed for people with a severe or profound learning disability. Causes of learning disabilities Brain development is affected in a person with a learning disability, usually before they are born, during birth or in early childhood. Causes may not be known in all cases, but include: • Mother’s illness during pregnancy • Birth problems restricting oxygen supply to the baby’s brain • Genetic abnormalities or inherited learning disability • Early childhood illness, including meningitis Diagnosing learning disabilities Some tests may be done during
pregnancy if there are concerns about a baby’s development, including amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling (CVS). A diagnosis could also be made after a baby is born, for example if there are concerns about the risk of a learning disability from a problem during birth. Specialist assessments may be carried out if a baby has developmental delays and is later than most other children reaching certain milestones. Getting a diagnosis of learning disability can be distressing, and parents may need professional and emotional support to help cope and plan ahead for the baby’s specific needs. Treating learning disability As a child with a learning disability grows up, support will be needed from a range of health professionals. Every child’s needs will be different. Living as full and independent a life as possible is the goal of this support from the family GP, specialist paediatricians, speech and language therapists, physiotherapists, educational and clinical psychologists.
The Return of Microgreens Back in the 1980s the trend for microgreens emerged as a new fine dining ingredient. Many dismissed it as a new fad, but the 21st century has seen a resurgence of interest in these tiny culinary delights. For those who don’t remember the 1980s, microgreens are the shoots of salad vegetables such as arugula, Swiss chard, lettuce, mustard and beetroot, which are picked and served just after the first leaves have developed. The average crop-time for most microgreens is 10-14 days from seeding to harvest. Praised for their freshness, they are said to contain high nutritional content, and they add flavour, texture and a great visual dynamic to dishes. Nowadays they are most commonly used to garnish salads, soups, sandwiches and plates. See our website at www.heymag.co.uk to learn how to grow your own micro greens and how to harvest them.

CAR GAMES
In the privacy of your own car, you can laugh as loud as you want or shout out the answers to questions. So don’t hold back when you play these games — laugh, yell, or sing your hearts out.
EATING AN ALPHABET
Let your half-starved brood describe how hungry they are in this game, best played about half an hour before you make a pit stop for food. This version of the “I’m Packing for a Picnic” game begins when you announce “I’m so hungry I could eat an aviator” (“alligator,” or “apple”). The next player adds on with a B word. She might say, “I’m so hungry I could eat an aviator and a bunny rabbit” (“belly button,” or “bologna slice”). See if you can keep it up until your family is eating zoos, zippers, or zigzags.
I SPY
Someone says, “I spy with my little eye something green.” Whoever guesses the item correctly goes next. You could limit the items to what’s in the area. Or you could get tricky and play I Spied, selecting items that you’ve already passed.
GUESS MOBILE
Name a guess master -- the person who poses a guessing challenge. He or she could ask passengers to guess the colour of the next passing car, or how long before you get to the next town. Or, with three clues, what it is that someone else sees.
GUESS MY NAME
Give your child a word challenge by asking her to make as many words as she can from the letters in a phrase such as “Are we there yet?” or “When will we be at the zoo?”
In this acting game players imitate the motions, habits, and expressions of a famous person, such as an athlete, politician, musician, or actor. The clincher: No talking allowed! Players can ask Yes or No questions (which are met by a nod or a shake). The correct guesser does the next impression.
THE HOUSE ON THE HILL
GEOGRAPHY
WORD STRETCH
Invent stories about people in the houses you are driving by. What do you think they do for work? What’s their favourite food? Where do they go on holiday? Get into lots of details, such as whether they snore loudly or are afraid of spiders. Give them names, hobbies, pets, and so on.
Start with A to Z anyplace in the world: Kansas, say. The next person has to think of a place that begins with the last letter of Kansas, such as South Africa. Whoever goes next needs a place that starts with A. It has to be a real place - and no using a map!

WELCOME TO IBRITISH MUD WEEK JUNE 23RD TO 29TH 2014
British Mud Week is a celebration of all things muddy. Whether it’s work or play we love getting our hands dirty. From the 23rd to the 29th June we want you to get involved and make the most of the great British outdoors by grabbing a buddy and getting muddy. How you get involved is completely up to you, we just want you to spend a day in the dirt.
HEYMAG.CO.UK | 23
Here are a few ideas to get you started:
1. MUD RUN
If you’re a particularly tough mud enthusiast you could take part in a gruelling obstacle course that you can create in the fields near your home.
2. WELLIES TO SCHOOL
Get your class involved with ‘Wellies to school’. Have everyone come into school wearing their Wellington boots and collect donations for a charity of your choice.
3. THE GREAT BRITISH MUD BAKE-OFF Spend a day baking Mississippi mud pie inspired treats and then host your own mud tuck shop.
10. DIG FOR WORMS
Digging for worms might sound a little strange but you’ll be surprised at how fascinated children can be by the wriggly little creatures. Get digging and see who can collect the most. Schools can take part in a number of ways from baking mud pies to letting children come to school in their wellies for a day. The week coincides with Glastonbury Music Festival, notorious for being the muddiest festival in the world, and the Oblivion Mud Runner event in Herefordshire, a six mile long endurance mud race.
4. CHARITY CAR WASH
Everybody’s car gets muddy and not everyone has time to clean it. But a car wash can actually be a lot of fun, so get a group together and get scrubbing.
Have fun in the mud!
5. MUD MAKE-UP
Treat yourself to a mud facial mask. Mud masks detox the skin, help clean out pours and make skin look healthier.
Farm Show
6. MUD WALK
Bowood House, Calne, Wiltshire, SN11 9NF Sunday 8th June 2014
Go with a friend, with your family or with your pets and take a walk through your local park, woods or fields.
7. MUD TREASURE HUNT
Take some treasure and bury it in the ground. Draw a treasure map, give it to your children or a friend and get them to dig in the dirt until they find it.
8. MUD SCULPTURES
With the right amount of water mud can be moulded into shape and used to create mud sculptures. With a little imagination who knows what you could end up making.
9. MUD PAINTING
Mud has many uses, but one thing you might not have known it be used for is painting. Make mud paintings at home.
