Special guests Bishop Henderson Primary School in Coleford have been having special guests attend the school this term. Frome Town Football Club, as part of their brand new educational programme have sent manager Darren Perrin, Vice Chairman Ivan Carver and Club Secretary Ian Pearce into the school to see the work that has been undertaken and to talk to the children. Bishop Henderson is the first official school link the club has made after the appointment of Nicola Coles as Educational Liaison Officer towards the end of last year. The programme being put in place is already attracting attention from Premier League & Football League clubs. Manager Perrin has been interviewed by the children in Kingfisher class in their study of biographies while Carver and Pearce presented the school with a signed Robins shirt at a recent school assembly. Pearce said of the new scheme “Its amazing to see how receptive the children are and using football as an educational tool has really captured all the childrens imagination & their enthusiasm has been fantastic to see with the quality of work really great” Sharon Chalk, a parent commented, “My son previously had shown no interest in football much to the despair of his dad. He has now become a football enthusiast and it really has brought the family together. He now comes home excited about his learning and is a passionate supporter of Frome Town Football Club.”

Bloodhound SSC trip

A Roman banquet

Year 5 pupils from St Louis Catholic Primary School, Frome, recently enjoyed an exciting trip to Fleet Air Arm Museum to see the visiting Bloodhound SSC car, made all the more exciting by a prize one! Bloodhound, driven by Andy Green, is going to attempt to break the current land speed record of 763mph. The 7.7 tonne car (propelled by a jet engine and rocket) hopes to break the sound barrier and travel faster than a bullet, going 1000mph. The project, through its educational programmes, is hoping to engage and excite children in maths, engineering and science involved in designing such a super sonic car. St Louis pupils enjoyed an action packed day of activities and one team of St Louis pupils were ecstatic to have won the day’s design competition. The prize? Their names will feature on the tail fin of the car and hopefully travel at 1000mph.

At the end of last term the children at Christ Church C of E First School held 3 events to celebrate the end of their topics and invited parents to come along and enjoy the event. The photos show Sapphire, Emerald and Topaz class and their Roman Banquet.

Sky Sports Mentor for Oakfield! This academic year, Oakfield is taking part in the Sky Sports ‘Living for Sports’ scheme. Tom Reed, our Athlete Mentor, visited in January to meet with the PE team to develop the Oakfield programme. Oakfield will now be organising sessions with external coach, Chris Roach from Elevation Martial Arts for a target group of pupils. The Mentor programme aims to develop pupil self-esteem and improve behaviour. These projects have already had great results with re-focusing under achieving pupils. “We anticipate a great improvement in behaviour and selfesteem for many or all participating pupils. Plans to later include our Gifted and Talented pupils with additional sport as part of this programme, are also in the pipeline.”

Key Stage 1 children at Vallis First School had a visit from Samuel Pepys last week as part of their topic on The Great Fire of London. Storyteller Steve Mynard had the children enthralled with his tales of life in the 17th Century. Key Stage co-ordinator Ali Plumridge said “the children were really excited to learn about The Great Fire of London from an eye-witness.”

A visit to one of the many working farms in the area which are open to the public will give the whole family the opportunity to get up close and personal with the animals. Most working farms have lots of free space for the children to enjoy the outdoors with tractor rides and play areas and its a great place to take a picnic. Parents can sit back, relax and enjoy a beautiful Spring day whilst the children play. Most farms also cater for rainy days with undercover play areas and activities. When planning your trip you should visit the farms website as this may give you an idea of upcoming events that you may want to plan your day trip around. Why not take the children to one of the many historic places in the local area, some children may not see the fun in visiting these places but why not make the visit more interesting for the kids by devising your own quiz sheet after a quick bit of research on the internet. With the majority of us feeling ‘the pinch’ at the moment it’s a good idea to have some plans for some ‘budget’ days too. How about a bike ride along the nearest cycle path, a walk in the local countryside or forest trail to see all the spring flowers or a trip to the local swimming pool. Most important of all is for the whole family to enjoy some quality time together and for your children to be relaxed and revitalised ready to face the new term and of course for you all to have terrific fun creating some memorable days out.

Does my child need Speech and Language Therapy? There is a recognised order in which children develop their speech sounds. The early sounds children start producing, well before they are using words, include ‘m’ and ‘b’ and the sounds which come later include ‘c’ (kuh) and ‘s’. Parents are so used to the way their child speaks they understand every word even when sounds are mispronounced. “I dot a bid dod” (I’ve got a big dog) “My tat id lellow” (My cat is yellow) It is often when the child starts school the Teacher or SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator) pick up on speech delay. It is normal for children in Reception to have some sounds which they are still learning and the daily focus on phonics can prompt a sudden improvement in the clarity of many 4 and 5 year olds’ speech. But some children find it harder to update the sound patterns they have developed – these children are said to have ‘delayed speech sound development’. Children who have had glue ear or other hearing difficulties can take longer to update their sound systems but delayed speech sound development is common, particularly in boys. Some children benefit from targeted work on specific sounds with a Speech and Language Therapist. A speech and language therapy program helps the child through the steps involved in learning a new speech sound. It is very important to remember a child has to be able to say the sound on its own before he or she can put it into a word. Asking a child to keep repeating a whole word will not help them to say it more clearly. The key to a successful therapy program is the child builds confidence and has fun! At Somerset Speech Therapy, a private speech and langauge therapy practice just outside Wells, our small team of experienced, friendly, dynamic therapists set goals that enable the child to experience success and want to come back again!

PARTIES

Our children’s birthdays come round so fast every year and for most of us we have the same panic each year “What party am I going to organise?!”. There always seems to be so much to do when arranging a birthday party and never enough time to do it in. Use our check list to make sure you’ve covered all the bases. The Check list: Invitations About three weeks before the party you’ll need to send out your invitations make sure they include the following information: Your child’s name and which birthday they are celebrating. Your address and phone number. The date, start and finish time of the party. The theme, if you are having one. Theme and decorations Make sure you order any decorations and balloons in plenty of time before the party. Have plenty of blu-tac with you on the day of the party so you can put your decorations up. The Food Every child loves party food, but it may be an idea to make sure you find out if any of the children attending the party have a food allergy. The cake Make sure you have plenty of serviettes to wrap the cake in as you give it to the children or put it in party bags. The party games If you are planning on entertaining the children yourself be prepared with plenty of party games to keep them amused. First Aid Although all venues should have a first aid kit it might be wise to take your own. There are many local companies who can help organise, entertain and supply you with everything you may need to relieve you from the stress of party planning and make sure your child’s birthday party goes with a bang!

Chocolate Custard Eggs Ingredients 8 Eggs 150ml milk 142ml carton double cream 75g plain chocolate, broken up 25g golden caster sugar ½ tsp cornflour Method 1. Have 2 bowls ready. Lightly tap 1 egg – at the pointed end – onto a bowl, to gently crack the shell (Peel off just the top). Holding the egg over 1 bowl, gently shake out the egg white, then shake out the egg yolk into the second bowl. Repeat with 1 more egg. Break the remaining eggs as before, but shake out both the egg yolks and whites into the first bowl with the 2 egg whites. You will need only 2 egg yolks to make the custard. (Use the contents of the first bowl for scrambled eggs.) 2. Wash the shells in very hot, soapy water, then rinse to remove any bacteria. Cook the eggshells in a bowl in the microwave for 1½ minutes on medium, or bake in a hot oven for 5 minutes. 3. Heat the milk, cream and chocolate in a pan over a low heat, stirring until smooth. Beat the 2 egg yolks, sugar and cornflour together in a bowl, then pour onto the chocolate, stirring well. While still over the heat, use a balloon whisk to stir constantly until custard-like. Tip into a jug and pour, while hot, into the eggshells. Serve warm or cold.

Easter Biscuits Ingredients 150g butter, softened 125g caster sugar, plus extra for sprinkling Finely grated zest of 1 lemon 2 medium egg yolks 250g plain flour, plus extra for dusting 1/2 tsp mixed spice 40g currants 10g chopped mixed citrus peel Method 1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/fan160°C/gas 4. In a large bowl, beat the butter, sugar and lemon zest until creamy. Beat in the egg yolks until smooth, then beat in the remaining ingredients until it forms a ball. 2. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured work surface and roll out to about 5mm thickness. Using a 7cm fluted pastry cutter, cut out about 20 biscuits. Re-roll the trimmings as you go. Place on 2 large, non-stick baking trays, spaced a little apart. 3. Bake for 15-18 minutes, until pale golden. Sprinkle with caster sugar, then cool on a wire rack. As a finishing touch, stack a few biscuits and tie with ribbon. They will keep for a week in an airtight container. 16

PETS R E N COR

Hi, my name is Ruby Rabbit

I share my hutch with Rupert Rabbit and we love being together. We have lots of fun and we enjoy running in our pen in the garden and sometimes the children we live with let us out to run in the grass, but they always keep an eye on us so we can’t get out. We have a big shelter in our hutch where we can both sleep and rest when we want to. This is filled with hay and newspaper to keep us warm and this is also where our owners put our food too. Our owners always give us a varied diet and we enjoy eating hay and grass, rabbit food from the pet shop and also greens. We enjoy broccoli, kale, fresh herbs and we love fresh dandelion leaves from the garden. Our owner says root vegetables such as carrots are high in sugar so we are only allowed these as treats. We like to have fresh water in our bottle every day. Although I don’t really love being picked up by my owners I do know I need to be brushed and groomed to keep my fur healthy, so I don’t mind that. I like it when my owner holds me close as I feel safe and secure then. I love gnawing on things and it also keeps my teeth healthy too. My owner gives me gnawing sticks and cardboard tubes for fun. I am looking forward to the Spring so I can spend more time outside and in the sunshine.

“Did you know that rabbits teeth never stop growing? They need to be able to chew on things to wear them down.” “A boy rabbit is called a buck and a girl rabbit is called a doe. Baby rabbits are called a kit or a kitten just like cats.”
