Raising money for... In 2010 our world fell apart, our only son Ben passed away from a Brain Tumour after a 3 an a half year fight. Spending a lot of time in hospitals, we wanted to do something to help others going through this horrific ordeal, no matter what is wrong with a child, it is a worrying time. In 2011 we set up “Time Is Precious” charity, to help children & their families whilst in hospital. TIP- work alongside our local children’s hospitals & wards to purchase equipment that will help make children’s & families stay a little more easier. Some of the resources we have purchased; I.Pads, Sensory Equipment, Portable DVD Players, T.V’s, Baby Equipment, Specialized equipment for Physiotherapy & disabled children, a new Oncology Parents Room, wheelchairs, Educational Resources & much more. If you would like to support “Time Is Precious” we appreciate every single penny. We are able to come along & do an assembly and/or a visit from our mascot Mr. Lion. Please contact us on contactus@timeprecious.org or visit our website to find out more www.timeisprecious.org
Oakfield Pupils learn Mandarin This year pupils have been learning Mandarin at the Academy as well as French and German. Chinese classes take place after school with Mrs J Lu, who uses highly creative ways to teach pupils the names of days and months, useful phrases and how to count up to one hundred in Mandarin. During Miss Lu’s classes, pupils have also learned about Chinese culture, particularly music, art and cuisine. Miss Lu comes from Shanghai in the Middle East of China and has taught English, Chinese and Mandarin. The Academy wishes to thanks Mrs Lu for taking the classes, where she has even been known to treat pupils to a spot of Chinese Flute playing! In the picture: Ivo, Finlay, Iris, Stephanie, Mrs Lu, Nickolaj and Jack. Pupils stand in front of their Chinese fans (which they used to learn Mandarin) holding their ‘happiness’ characters.
Frome in Bloom Selwood Academy are delighted to have won the Gold Certificate in the Schools and Colleges category of Frome in Bloom 2013. The pupils and staff have worked extremely hard this year to improve the gardens and are thrilled to have this recognised by the judges of Frome in Bloom. Visitors to the school have been very complimentary of the grounds which has been wonderful to hear. The Academy have some fantastic ideas to develop the gardens further for 2014 and are looking forward to next year’s competition!

10 tips for parents When your child first heads off to school, it can be hard to let go. You remember your own teachers. What’s this one going to be like? And most importantly, how can you get the best out of your child’s teacher and ensure your child’s time at school is happy and fruitful.
1 Treat teachers as professionals
Teachers get a lot of criticism in the press, but the vast majority are very competent and dedicated. They have had many years of training and standards have improved in the last few years in both private and state sectors. Treat your teachers with respect and professionalism.
2 Be realistic
As parents, we have huge expectations for our children. Having high expectations and wanting the best for your child is great, but it’s even better if you can remain realistic. When the teacher says your child is just about average, then he probably is. Yes, there are some late bloomers who don’t flourish until they are older. But as teachers, they usually get it right.
3 Acknowledge your feelings about school
When children first start school, parents are often surprised by the feelings that are aroused when they set foot on the school premises. Just remember to play the adult when visiting school. Be mindful of these old feelings, but don’t be hijacked by them.
4 Forgive mistakes
As we all know, working with children is not an exact science. This means that, on occasions, teachers are going to get it wrong. When you’re dealing with your child’s teacher, try not to complain about every mistake she makes. If there is a serious problem or an ongoing situation, then make an appointment with the teacher and talk through the issues. If there is still no change, ask the head teacher to become involved, but continue to be polite and positive during these meetings.
5 Be punctual
This might seem trivial, but there is nothing more annoying than parents who consistently bring their children in late. Teachers are sympathetic to the odd bit of tardiness, but it is maddening to hear “Sorry I’m late” from the same parent every morning. Wake up earlier and get organised.
6 Offer to help out
Many schools like parents to get involved. If you can spare an hour or two a week to hear children read or help in an area of expertise, such as art or PE, then most teachers would be more than happy to see you. But equally, be realistic about how much time you can dedicate to the class.

7 Give positive feedback
Everybody thrives on praise and teachers are no different. Parents often find it hard to give positive feedback because schools can make them nervous, but teachers love being given compliments about thier work. Teaching can be a very isolated job.
8 Get the timing right
Teaching is an exhausting job. Until you have done it yourself it’s impossible to realise what a drain it can be. After a long day teaching your delightful child, and sometimes up to 29 others, teachers are not always at their best.
9 Don’t take breaks during term time
It’s really frustrating that airlines double their prices during the school holidays, but your school will have a policy of no holidays in term time, please stick to it.
10 It’s the thought that counts
Receiving presents from parents is fantastic, but don’t go over the top. A token gift at Christmas or at the end of the year always goes down well, especially if it comes with a card containing thanks and appreciation for all the teacher’s hard work.
Did you know? 1 in 5 children leave school unable to swim. Why is learning to swim important? When children learn how to swim at an early age it can prove invaluable in maintaining a healthy lifestyle and provides a life skill. What’s in it for me? Swimming is for all ages, sizes and abilities and children love swimming with friends and family. It also keeps you fit and healthy so that you have lots of energy during the day. Just think – when you go on holiday you’ll be able to swim with dolphins, go snorkelling and splash around in the pool! Your local leisure centres have swimming pools with plenty of sessions, lessons and cool courses to choose from so have a sneaky look at www.kinetikaswimming.co.uk Need more convincing? Prince William believes in swimming as a life skill and earlier this year said, “Swimming is unique - it is the only sport that can save lives - which is why I’m so keen for school swimming to be accessible for all children at all primary schools.” Cut out and present your voucher at one of our listed centres PLUS for a chance to WIN a £20 Zoggs voucher** to spend at one of our centres email your name and mobile telephone number to rebeccadavies@dcleisure.co.uk **T&Cs apply

For most of the general population Halloween is a night for dressing up, telling ghost stories, having spooky parties, trick-or-treating and pumpkin carving. What most people don’t know is that Halloween is actually based on an ancient Celtic holiday known as Samhain (pronounced “sow wan”), which means “summer’s end”. It was the end of the Celtic year, starting at sundown on October 31st and going through to sundown November 1st. It was a night to honour loved ones that had passed on. Celebrated for centuries by the Celts of old, Witches and many other nature based religions, it is the most magical night of the year. It is the Witches’ New Year, and the Last Harvest. Although the religious significance of it has passed for the general public, Halloween is a “magical” night for all! On this magical night, glowing lanterns, carved from turnips or gourds, were set on porches and in windows to welcome deceased loved ones, but also to act as protection against malevolent spirits. Burning lumps of coal were used inside as a source of light, later to be replaced by candles. When European settlers, particularly the Irish, arrived in America they found the native pumpkin to be larger, easier to carve and seemed the perfect choice for the lanterns. Halloween didn’t really catch on big in this country until the late 1800’s and has been celebrated in so many ways ever since!

Tips for a safe • Children should never play with fireworks. If you give children sparklers, make sure they keep them outside and away from the face, clothing, and hair. Sparklers can reach 1,800°F (982°C) — hot enough to melt gold. • Buy only legal fireworks (legal fireworks have a label with the manufacturer’s name and directions; illegal ones are unlabeled), and store them in a cool, dry place. Never try to make your own fireworks. • Always use fireworks outside and have a bucket of water and a hose nearby in case of accidents. • Don’t hold fireworks in your hand or have any part of your body over them while lighting. Wear some sort of eye protection, and avoid carrying fireworks in your pocket — the friction could set them off. • Point fireworks away from homes, and keep away from brush and leaves and flammable substances. • Light one firework at a time and never relight a dud. • Don’t allow children to pick up pieces of fireworks after an event. Some may still be ignited and can explode at any time. • Soak all fireworks in a bucket of water before throwing them in the rubbish bin. • Think about your pet. Animals have sensitive ears and can be extremely frightened or stressed on the firework night. Keep pets indoors to reduce the risk that they’ll run loose or get injured.
Firework Night If a child is injured by fireworks, immediately go to a hospital. If an eye injury occurs, don’t allow your child to touch or rub it, as this may cause even more damage. Also, don’t flush the eye out with water or attempt to put any ointment on it. If it’s a burn, remove clothing from the burned area and run cool, not cold, water over the burn (do not use ice). Call a ambulance immediately. Fireworks are meant to be enjoyed, but you’ll enjoy them much more knowing your family is safe. Take extra precautions this firework night and your evening will be a blast! 98 Bradley Road Trowbridge BA14 0RB

A rallying cry is being issued to shoppers to support local independent stores as this year’s Christmas shopping season gets under way. The run-up to Christmas is a crucial time for traders, and people are being urged to think of our locally-run shops when looking for presents this year. Our local High Streets have a wonderful mix of unique independent stores and to make sure this continues we need throw our support behind small independent traders to help them thrive. Shopping locally helps to improve the local economy research suggests a pound spent with a local business stays in the local economy for five more transactions whereas a pound spend with a national business operating locally stays in the local economy for just two transactions. These independent businesses help define our city and we hope this promotion encourages people to do more of their spending locally and introduces new customers to shops with a proud local tradition and heritage.

How to reduce sibling rivalry It is thought that a gap of between two and four years will promote the worst sibling jealousy and that a gap of over five years will produce the least, but this is by no means always the case. Do not despair; your child is not the devil’s spawn, just a normal child expressing his feelings in the only way he knows how. Young children are very self-focused and even if they will share with friends’ children on a visit, that is very far removed from having to “share” every day. There are ways you can help alleviate his fears. Try to persuade family and friends to
make a fuss of your eldest child as they normally do before they make any fuss of the new baby. This is particularly important when a favourite relation of your child’s visits. Give your child big boy privileges that the baby cannot have and point this out to him. Try and make sure you give your older child special one-to-one attention when the baby is sleeping or being cared for by another adult. All these little things help to reassure your child that he or she is still important and loved even though the little alien has arrived. This often helps to

stem the jealousy and make the baby more acceptable. As baby grows let your child, if he wants to, help with everyday tasks like bath time, nappy changing and mealtimes but don’t force the issue. Some siblings will never be best friends due to individual personalities but the vast majority will grow up happily together despite the rocky start. And don’t listen to those who tell you that their children adored each other from day one because there is no child born who did not resent a brother or sister at some time.
Helping your child through bedwetting Most people can remember wetting the bed when they were a child. Nocturnal enuresis, as it is technically known, is common in childhood. It can be occasional or persistent and can affect children of all ages, even those in their teens. As well as being a pain for the parent, the problem can be a huge cause of embarrassment for a child. The natural course of progression for parents is to encourage night-time dryness once a child has learned to stay dry during the day. There are many reasons why children wet the bed for longer than normal. According to research, bedwetting can be an inherited trait, especially if both parents used to wet the bed when they were young. If the problem persists well into early childhood, it would be wise to consider possible physical factors, such as slow bladder growth, diabetes, constipation, allergies, abnormal sleep patterns, physical abnormalities or deficiencies in urine inhibiting hormones during the night. Speak to your doctor if you are concerned. As children get older they will become more aware that this is not the norm and may feel embarrassed and ashamed. It is down to the parents to stay positive and reassure the child it is not their fault and that the problem will resolve itself with time. Experts advise that any discussions about bedwetting should
always be as private as possible and away from any siblings. One solution is to involve the child in prevention methods. There are a number of disposable underwear products available as well as disposable mattress pads to choose from. Ask if the child wishes to be woken in the night to pop to the toilet - you can offer them an alarm clock or bedwetting alarm device. Involving them in the choice of prevention may help build a sense of grown-up independence as they are self-managing the problem. For some children a reward chart with incentives for several dry nights helps motivate staying dry. One good exercise is to encourage your child to wait as long as possible to urinate
during the day, which stretches the bladder and increases muscle strength. Discourage caffeinated foods like chocolate or colas as they stimulate the bladder. Also keep them well hydrated during the day so they don’t have a thirst in the evening. Typically, children who wet the bed once a night will slowly progress to wetting fewer nights each week, with fluctuations back and forth, until they eventually outgrow the problem altogether. However, the entire process can take more than a year or two to fully resolve itself. Regardless of how you proceed, avoid putting pressure on your child and don’t dish out punishments, say experts. Staying dry all night is a developmental skill that all children achieve in time.

danger through their online activities, parents across the UK are being urged to do more to keep their kids safe. The government report found that as many as one in four children have put themselves in potential danger by secretly meeting strangers they have contacted online. This represents a three-fold increase on a similar study carried out two years ago. Parents are relying too heavily on their children doing as they are told to keep them safe online, according to new research from BroadbandChoices. co.uk. A staggering 84 per cent of parents polled across the UK said
that they rate verbal agreement with their children on safe internet usage as their number one means of monitoring online activity.
Social networking online is more popular than ever with children and teenagers. But with a recent government report revealing that children are putting themselves in

LET’S PARTY! One of the joys of having children is being able to create magic and fantasy for them, and seeing the sheer delight on their faces at the sight of something special. Birthday Parties are a great chance to bring some of that magic to a child, or to a group of children, and although it can be hard work the results and memories for the child make it more than worthwhile. The range of choice for Birthday Parties these days is staggering, and like everything else, it is hard to please all the people all the time - even the little people! However, it is worth remembering that it is the children you want to impress, not their parents!
Whatever your budget, don’t lose sight of the reason for the party - enjoyment all round. Ask the little Birthday Person what sort of party they would like (within reason!) and who they want to invite - get some advice from teachers and playgroup leaders if you don’t know all your child’s friends. Spend your money and your time wisely. If money is tight, make the things you can yourself and only spend on the things you can’t. Even if you have a reasonable budget you don’t need to go over-board - it is better to do a few things very well than try and do too much and end up in a muddle!

10 or so years, achieving 4 promotions and now playing just 3 divisions below the Football League. More importantly we have developed the Club as a whole so we now have 3 adult men’s teams, 2 adult ladies’, veterans, under 18’s and pretty much every age of youth football, boys and girls, from 4 upwards and much of this has been achieved over the last 4 years.

Somerset FA stated “The club currently supports football at all levels within its structure and is currently Somerset’s highest ranked charter standard community club in the men’s football pyramid. With forward thinking and pro-active coaches within the youth section, the club are currently providing a wonderful platform and pathway for young players to progress.”
FROME TOWN IS YOUR LOCAL TEAM – BE A PART OF IT. 20
It is very important you look after yourself; eating healthily, exercising regularly and spending time with the people who motivate and support you is vital to both adults and children alike. Regular exercise is the best way to keep you healthy and fit. Taking part in sport helps to reduce your stress levels, increase your energy levels and to tone up your body. There are plenty of ways to give yourself a kick start, from visiting your local gym to taking part in one or two of the many weekly exercise classes now available. If you prefer to exercise outside in the fresh air then you may wish to consider joining a sporting team, for fun or competition. There are hundreds of sports available to all and these can range form football to martial arts. Swimming is not only fun but one of the best ways of staying healthy and fit. Swimming regularly is beneficial to your whole body physically and allows you to lead a healthy lifestyle. It is a vital skill for children to be able to swim and there are many sports centres and swimming pools that offer lessons to children from birth onwards. It is also important to eat healthily which will make you feel your best. Make sure you are eating a wide range of foods to give you a balanced diet. This will also ensure your body is getting all the nutrients it needs. Make sure you are eating the correct number of calories for your level of activity. Drinking plenty of water both on and off of the sports field is also crucial for keeping your hydration in check. If your body is low on water this can affect your ability to perform as well as making you feel lousy. Water is by far the best thing you can drink whilst exercising. It is important to take time out to look after yourself. Hopefully the ideas above will enable you to lead a healthier and fitter lifestyle. Good luck!

Enjoying time out with your family With some preparation and a few strategies, it is possible to take your children out. Children need to be taught what behaviour is expected of them in restaurants. They cannot be expected to know automatically since some of the rules of restaurant are going to be a bit different from home. When children have mastered behaving during the meal itself, a family can venture out to the more family friendly restaurants that have table service. One good way to tell a family friendly restaurant from others is that they will provide high chairs and booster seats, and they have a children’s menu. You should be at the restaurant a little before the child’s regular dinnertime so that they will not be starving before the food arrives. Regardless of how a restaurant may seem, if the service is slow by adult standards, you will be miserable, so opt out of those places. You will want to pack a bag of quiet toys, colouring books and crayons, but these distractions may wear out. One hint for packing toys for a truly critical experience for the child is to pack new or unfamiliar toys. They will be

more entertained by something they have never seen, if you have chosen well. It is good to always have a few of these types of toys hidden away for this purpose. Packing snacks has dubious value. If the child eats before their real dinner comes, they will still need to wait while everyone else eats. Sometimes if the waiting gets too hard it is helpful for an adult to take the child to the lobby or outdoors for a few minutes for a change of

scene. You will need to use this method judiciously because you do not want to be disturbing other diners by walking past their tables frequently. You also do not want to give your child the impression that wandering around the restaurant is acceptable behaviour, because it is not. Be certain to remember all your good table manners in the restaurant. Just because someone else is doing the cleaning up is no excuse to play with the food or leave a mess. Be polite to your server, and leave a generous tip if they have tried to accommodate the extra demands of your family. Not every restaurant experience with young children will be a great one. Some days you may have to ask the server to package your food for take-out, and spend more time covering your expectations with your child at home. Do not be discouraged. Every parent has had to deal with a cranky child at one time or another in a public situation. Sooner or later your children will get the hang of restaurant eating. Soon you will both be enjoying eating out as a family. All of the local restaurants shown on these pages welcome families and are able to supply high chairs and children’s menu’s to suit your child and to ensure your local dining experience is one you will want to carry out regularly.

PETS R E N COR Bang! Fireworks frighten animals Many dogs and cats will try to hide when they hear fireworks. This helps them to cope with their fear. You can help your pet by making sure they have a hiding place where they feel safe. • Create a comforting ‘den’. This could be inside a wardrobe or cupboard, or behind a sofa. Pad it with old pillows and blankets to help soundproof it/ • In the weeks leading up to firework season, let your pet have access to this den at all times and, for dogs in particular, offer healthy treats and praise when your dog uses it, this will build a positive association with this space. • A pheromone plug-in placed nearby can also help (available from pet shops and vet practices). These pheromones are calming scents that dogs and cats can smell but we can’t. • Your pet may already have a preferred hiding place. That is fine; they should not be forced out if this is already the place where they feel most relaxed. • Ensure dogs and cats are micro chipped so that if they escape from the house, scared and confused, there is more chance you will be reunited. • If you have concerns about your pet’s phobia you should speak to your vet for help and guidance. Noise phobias in pets are treatable with the right professional help.
“Remember to walk your dogs early in the evening before the fireworks start. Distract your pets by playing with them and giving them new chews or toys to play with” Keep your doors, windows and cat flaps closed to help prevent your cats escaping and to also minimise noise of the fireworks. Remember to put a litter tray down for cats when keeping them in”
