Three Oakfield students were very fortunate last week to spend 5 days on a local Farm. Jamie’s Farm is a working farm of over 200 acres which also runs residential farmstays for school groups. The Oakfield boys experienced a typical week as a farmer - the day began at around 6am by starting the fire before feeding chickens, pigs, horses, cattle and sheep. The boys worked very hard at mucking out the stables and pig-pens, before returning to the kitchen to make their own farmer’s fry-up. The rest of the day was spent, chopping wood, making fences, picking vegetables and preparing meals. In the afternoons the boys undertook a 5-mile hike, followed by a deliciously prepared dinner (also created by the boys!) Sam Neal, Tyler Singer and Tommy Davis all had a fabulous and challenging week on the farm. They all worked very hard and were great ambassadors for Oakfield Academy.

Maasai Warriors Children from Key Stage 2 at Vallis Primary School had a real treat on Wednesday afternoon when they were visited by a genuine tribe of Maasai Warriors. The Maasai taught them lots of new songs and dances and explained about the history of the Maasai and life in Kenya. Key Stage 2 coordinator Tracy Massey said “This was a fantastic experience for the children and they have learnt a lot about another culture. At Vallis we sponsor a school in Kenya so this was a really good opportunity to learn first hand about how the people live there.”
Guide Dogs for the Blind Christ Church C of E First School has set tails wagging with the launch of their latest community project, raising funds for The Guide Dogs for The Blind. Mrs Moore from Guide Dogs for the Blind gave an inspiring talk to the children and they had the opportunity to meet a Guide dog and ask questions about a guide dog’s rigorous training. The children then took their own cuddly dogs across a sponsored agility course as part of a fun-filled Gowalkies@school afternoon. Thanks to parents and friends this raised an amazing £943.75! Christ Church C of E First School will continue to support The Guide Dogs for the Blind throughout this academic year. The aim is to raise £3000 and have the opportunity to name and sponsor a guide dog puppy through its intensive training. 5
Oakfield Academy hosts Frome Apple Day Oakfield were delighted to work alongside Frome Apple Group and the Fruitfull Project to host to a well-attended Apple Day for the community this year. As part of Apple Day, pupils were asked to come up with a great apple recipe idea and cook, using donated apples, products to give away and sell. Children from Apple Core Club alongside recipe competition winners, Immy and Yazmine took up the challenge and cooked a large amount of delicious toffee apple cakes, apple muffins and apple sauce. Thank you to St Louis School for donating their orchard apples for our apple products as well as for pressing and giving away to visitors. The cooked goodies were given to Routes Frome on Apple Day for the young YMCA residents to enjoy. Thank you to Sarah from Routes for attending the event to bring awareness to their work for Frome’s young people and also for helping children make apple smoothies using pedal power! Apple Core Club sold some of the cooked goods, which raised £31 towards keeping the Discovery Orchard maintained.

Oakfield wishes to thank all visitors to this event and also organisers, Tasha Child (Oakfield,) Barbra Lakin (Fruitfull Project) and Helen Johnson (Frome Apple Group.) The Academy also wishes to thanks Sustainable Frome and Frome Wholefood Shop (for their apple pressing power and support,) Oakfield staff, Alison Flynn (Design and Technology Teacher) TA’s Sue Edwards, Sue Ellis and all our Apple Core Club members and competition winners; a wonderful day was had by all. Samaritan’s Purse Appeal
Pupils at Selwood Academy have contributed nearly 150 shoe boxes as part of the Samaritan’s Purse Operation Shoe-box appeal. These boxes will go to deserving children around the world in time for Christmas. Teacher Mrs Key organised the appeal and was very impressed with the response, “This is my third year at Selwood and the pupils have always been very generous and kind; I am very proud of them all and the response has exceeded my expectations. A huge thank you to all the pupils and parents who have supported this appeal.”

Eyecare’s as easy as ABC WITH VISION being one of the most important tools in a child’s learning, Specsavers in Frome and Trowbridge are stressing the importance of children’s sight tests. Regular eye examinations are vital, as undetected problems with vision can damage confidence and performance in reading and sports that require handeye co-ordination. ‘We recommend that children have their first eye examination at around three years old or as soon as they can match pictures or point at things, as the earlier many common childhood vision problems are discovered, the better the chance of correcting them,’ says Stephen Auty, store director at Specsavers in Trowbridge. If a child’s eyesight is not in perfect condition, struggles with concentration or reading can often be mistaken for learning difficulties. Around 80% of everything a child learns is through their vision, so even a minor problem with a child’s sight can mean they suffer huge setbacks in their development at school. Paul Rich, director at Specsavers in Frome comments: “If you notice that your child is quite clumsy, has poor handwriting or is falling behind peers at school, then
it is worth taking them for a free eye examination. It’s important to know that these signs may be subtle.” Most infants and pre-school children have regular vision screening as part of their routine developmental checks. These early tests are invaluable, but are not as thorough as a full eye examination by a qualified optometrist. At Specsavers the test is designed to be friendly and fun for kids of all ages. Eye examinations for children are paid for by the NHS up to the age of 16, or 19 if they are in fulltime education. If children need glasses, the NHS contributes towards the cost. At Specsavers, this voucher entitles children to free glasses from a wide range of fashionable frames. The full range of children’s spectacles can be seen online at www.specsavers.co.uk/glasses/childrens-glasses. Christmas presents on a budget Christmas doesn’t have to be an expensive time of year. By setting yourself an affordable budget and sticking to it you’ll be able to start the New Year without mountains of unplanned debt. Use our tips to help you make the most of the money. Write a list - estimate the cost of each present and check that the total is within your budget. Stick to your list. Sounds simple, but it’s easy to get carried away when Christmas lights are twinkling and gifts are displayed to entice you to buy. Plan what to buy and when - some things are best paid for early to get the best deals, for example travel, and others best to leave until the last minute, such as stocking fillers. Compare prices of different retailers as well as internet and shop prices - they often differ. Price comparison websites can be useful but use more than one source to get a full range of price information. Search for discounts - you can find vouchers in magazines and voucher codes online. If there is space to enter a discount code, always search for one. Don’t be tempted - two-for-one, three-for-two, mix-and-match or other
or cancelling a gym or magazine membership which you’re not using. Try a clothes swap - instead of buying a new outfit, why not swap with friends or use an online swap agency? Sell unwanted goods - online auctions can be a good way of converting things you don’t need or use to cash (including last year’s unused Christmas presents!), but take care and use online auctions safely. enticing offers are there to tempt you. Check the original prices to make sure that they really are value for money. And only buy them if you really need them. Do you need insurance? Check your Christmas gifts are covered by your existing contents insurance policy. And think twice before buying any extended warranties - you may already be covered. And if you dare to leave your food shopping until Christmas Eve afternoon, there are bargains to be had! Cut back - see if you can find one or two areas where you can make savings, eg packed lunches for you or your children,
Think about swapping Christmas cards for online messages or e-cards. With the price of postage increasing on a regular basis, this could be a real money-saver and is also good for the environment. If you are getting benefits, did you know that you may be entitled to a Christmas bonus? And if you don’t currently get benefits, find out if you should be. See the Directgov website for more information. If you are planning to borrow to help pay for Christmas then make sure it is the best borrowing available to you. And only borrow what you can afford to pay back.
Getting to grips with eczema
Around one in five children suffers from the skin complaint and in 8 out of 10 cases, the condition occurs before they reach the age of five. Emollients - substances used for moisturising, washing and bathing that help soften and smooth the skin to keep it supple and moist - are recognised as the most important treatment for eczema.
However, the research shows that in practice, many parents are not using these treatments as effectively as they could. Almost half of mums only apply to the affected areas of their child’s skin, when medical guidance from the National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence recommends that treatments they should be applied to the whole body, even when the child’s skin appears clear. The survey also highlighted that many parents could be hampering the effect of these treatments by the way they apply them - 53 per cent rub creams and ointments into their child’s skin which can actually worsen the condition by irritating the skin. As a result of the findings, the National Eczema Society has teamed up with E45 to launch a new threestep treatment plan and online advice programme. Developed in line with NICE and NES guidance, the simple plan advises: 1: Apply emollient creams and ointments all over your child’s body
2-3 times a day 2: Use gentle strokes in the direction of the hair growth when applying emollients 3: Use soap substitutes and an emollient bath oil to cleanse your child’s skin To help parents get the most from the plan, E45 has also launched a free support programme at www.eczemaadvice.co.uk The new online resource offers advice for parents as soon as their child is diagnosed with eczema and gives those struggling to manage their child’s condition the help they need to improve treatment outcomes. The programme has already seen positive results with nine out of 10 parents saying they feel more in control of their child’s eczema since signing up and 81 per cent reporting an improvement in their child’s symptoms. The website gives parents the tools they need to monitor and check their child’s eczema symptoms along with easy access to advice leaflets, educational videos and testimonials.

LET’S PARTY!
One of the joys of having children is being able to create magic and fantasy for them, and seeing the sheer delight on their faces at the sight of something special. Birthday Parties are a great chance to bring some of that magic to a child, or to a group of children, and although it can be hard work the results and memories for the child make it more than worthwhile. The range of choice for Birthday Parties these days is staggering, and like everything else, it is hard to please all the people all the time - even the little people! However, it is worth remembering that it is the children you want to impress, not their parents!

It is very important we support our high street traders by doing as much of our shopping as we possibly can locally. A lot of independent local traders and their businesses are beginning to die out, resulting in a large number of high street shops gradually closing down and being left boarded-up. By shopping locally you can make a difference to the livelihood of the traders and to the landscape of 78 x 57mm Ashleys Farm Toys ad_Layout 1 24/09/2013 12:28 Page 1 your local high street or town. 4. Keeping £ in the Local Economy Pounds spent in locally-owned businesses have three times the impact on your community as pounds spent at national chains. When shopping locally, you simultaneously create jobs, fund more services through investment in neighborhood improvements and promoting community development. 5. Job and Wages Locally owned businesses create more jobs locally and, in some sectors, provide better wages and benefits. 6. Public Benefits and Costs Local stores in town centres require comparatively little infrastructure and make more efficient use of public services. 7. Environmental Sustainability Local stores help to sustain vibrant, compact, walkable town centres-which in turn are essential to reducing vehicle use, habitat loss, and air and water pollution. 8. Competition A marketplace of hundreds or thousands of small businesses is the best way to ensure innovation and low prices over the long-term. 9. Christmas is nearly here and it’s time to get out your party clothes and enjoy the festive season. You’ve spent the last few weeks Christmas shopping for presents and what seems to be enough food to feed the five thousand. You’ve lost count of the number of presents you’ve wrapped and cards that you’ve written. You’ve been making costumes for nativity plays and been a taxi service for the children. You’ve been tangled up in Christmas lights and decorated the house to look like a Winter wonderland...it’s now time for you to enjoy the festive season and do something for yourself. New Year’s Eve creeps up on all of us and before we know it we are celebrating the start of yet another year. We contemplate where the last year has disappeared and discuss our New Year’s resolutions, even though the majority of us have forgotten our resolutions from the previous year...but not this year...2014 is going to be the year you stick to yours. It’s a brand new year so why not make it a brand new you to match. Around 7 million people in the UK make New Year’s resolutions to improve their health, but sticking to it in the dark winter months can be particularly tough. However it’s worth remembering that just 15 minutes of exercise a day can increase life expectancy by up to 3 years! Exercise doesn’t have to be something that you dread each week and to ensure that you stick to your New Year’s resolution of exercising more make sure that you find something that you love and that you find fun. If you’re looking to start running why not set yourself a goal, maybe it’s a sponsored run or even a half marathon by the end of the year!
Exercise classes can also be a great way to get fit, make friends and have fun. There are so many exercise classes that you could try from Yoga and Pilates that help develop core strength and tone the body to Zumba and high impact aerobics that will really get you burning calories and toning all at the same time as shaking your stuff! Aerobic classes have some great health benefits: However, running, aerobic classes or joining a gym might not be for you, you may not have the time or it might just simply not be your cup of tea. But all is not lost there are some other simple changes that you can make to help develop the new healthy you: If you are thinking about dieting you should always consult with your GP before starting. If you have decided a diet is one of your New Year’s resolutions you could join a slimming club where you will be able to meet new people who are also experiencing the same challenge as you. A slimming club is a great way to ensure that you are following a healthy eating plan and at the same time you can share you successes and even your bad days with people who understand. Many slimming groups offer generous eating plans making slimming easier, which is good news if you have enjoyed numerous mince pies, chocolates and turkey curries over Christmas and are worried about being on a strict regime. With professional support and encouragement you will certainly shift those excess pounds.
Zumba gold For complete beginners & the Active older population Low impact, fitness dance, easy to follow, calorie-burning. burning.

We all have very busy lives and spend too much time at work and not enough time at play, so make sure that you and your family spend some quality time together this Christmas. Plan your trips beforehand to ensure that you are all aware of the expectations of the day. Agree to visit a nice restaurant, a show or even a children’s venue where they can have fun and you can too. Family time is vital and laughing together creates a bond that is hard to break. Have fun with your children, take part in their activities and enjoy everything they do. Eating out with small children can be challenging but ensure that you take along several toys or colouring to keep the children occupied while you are waiting for your meal.

Time Together Teaching children the expectations of table manners at a young age will stand them in good stead for the future and there is no better place to practice this, than in a family restaurant. Drawing games Challenge the family to some good old fashioned drawing games to pass the time away. You can play hangman, noughts and crosses, battleships or even your own version of ‘Draw Something’ (drawing objects for the rest of the players to guess). You could also play consequences where you all draw a head then fold the paper over and pass on. Then draw a body, fold, pass on and continue until you have drawn a figure. The fun is in the unveiling the pieces of the body that have been added by your family. These activities will spark laughter, fun and you will all have a great time.
Disco party with great music, smoke & bubbles, plus your children get full use of all the play equipment!

PETS R E N COR It’s the festive season again and we’re surrounded by Christmas music wherever we go, trees and bright baubles in the shops, and everyone seems to be a bit happier than they were last week. Everyone is looking for an amazingly wonderful and unusual gift which will make their child gleefully happy and this sometimes extends to animals being given as Christmas presents. While this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it becomes a bad thing when the purchase is made on a festive whim and little to none of the proper research is done into the proper care. Here is a handy guide to helping you decide if buying a pet for Christmas is the right thing for you, your child, and the pet. The first question you should ask yourself is this: Does my child really want a new pet? Buying a pet for a family member might seem like a wonderful thing to do, but do they really want the responsibility of caring for a new pet and, in the case of children especially, you may need to take over the duty of care if they lose interest. Things to Think About 1. Who will be looking after the animal? You? Your children? Can you trust your children to be dedicated enough to care for the animal for the rest of its life? 2. Will you happily take over the care duties if your children lose interest? Can you dedicate the time to give the animal essential daily love, cuddles and attention on top of feeding and cleaning care?
3. Where will you keep the animal? Indoors our outdoors? Do you have a suitable space set up? can you keep it safe from the dogs and cats in the house? Is it going to end up unloved in a hutch at the bottom of the garden? 4. Have you budgeted for medical attention should it be needed? Can you put a little money aside each month just in case? 5. Can you afford to feed your new pet? Have you researched the appropriate diet? Do you know where you’ll be buying your feed supplies from 6. Is anyone in your household allergic to pet hairs? If so, a fluffy pet might not be such a good idea! Fish or reptiles may be more appropriate. 8. What will you do if for some reason you can’t care for your pet anymore? Do you know of any local rescue centres who may be able to help? Remember, pets are for life – not just for Christmas. Please give it a lot of consideration before you make that Christmas purchase. Pets have needs and feelings too.
A reason to not give a pet as a gift: Pets should not be given as a surprise Surprising someone with a new pet on Christmas day sounds like a lovely idea, however unless the surprise has actually been researched and planned for, it can be a risky thing to do. The new pet owner should really be included every step of the way, from selecting their pet, to bringing it home and settling them in.
