They acted under the guidance of Mr McGrath and Mr Reynolds, helping Year 7’s learn about lots of different topics, including ‘The history of chocolate’ and ‘erupting volcanoes’. “We were really impressed with the amount of work the club has put into this challenging activity, especially as we can see that the Year 7’s learnt so much from the experience” said Mr McGrath, Head of Humanities.Year 8 pupils Stella, Emily and Anna said, “We have really enjoyed the process of planning and teaching our lessons. We started by getting into groups and deciding what we enjoyed about our previous lessons. We tried to include these features in our lesson plans. PREFECT SUCCESS WINNING DESIGN Selwood Academy held a competition to design their Christmas card for 2013. The competition was fierce and they had many delightful designs submitted to choose two winners from. Congratulations to the two winners May & Astrid who each received a book token for £10 and the two runners up Holly and Alex who received a book token for £5.
Oakfield Academy has just seen the conclusion of the first term for Year 8 Prefects. Appointed in October this group of twenty pupils have been undertaking duties and performing tasks as requested by staff. As Prefects they are aware that they need to set a very good example for the other pupils and being a successful Prefect demonstrates leadership skills and commitment to a role. All the Prefects wear a special badge and have access to a special room during break and lunch times. They have also voted for a distinctive Prefect tie, which has been presented to them by Oakfield’s new Head Teacher - Emma Wilkes. Also pictured is Mr Hugh Gough, Year Head.

Two nurseries in Trowbridge, Green Shoots and Little Shoots, which are both operated by Bath YMCA have spaces this September, so if you are looking for a high standard of care for your child, in a friendly and welcoming setting, you may just have found the answer... All activities at the nurseries are based on the new Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum and are enhanced by great staff and a high standard of resources and equipment. The strategies used aim to develop children’s confidence, self-esteem and inter-personal skills. There are three distinct areas within the nursery each offering care for different age groups: Buttercups: 3 months to 2 years, Daisies: 2 to 3 years and Sunflowers: 3 to 5 years. A lovely outdoor space is used to its fullest – there is a garden where fruit and vegetables are grown, there is extensive play equipment, and a grass area where the little ones can let off steam. If you want to find out more, call to arrange an appointment, and soon your child could be ‘shooting for the stars’!

To help both you and your child, it is critical that both of you are happy and confident with your choice of nursery. Knowing that your child is in a safe, high-quality environment as you go to work or training is hugely reassuring. You should always visit more than one nursery before you make a decision about where you wish to place your child. This will give you a better view of the variety of nurseries available as some will suit you and your child’s individual needs more than others. First of all you need to look at what nurseries are available in your area. You should consider what is going to work best for you; for example, do you want a nursery near home or work/college? As part of this, you should think about what will work for your child, for example, if you have a long commute it may be preferable to locate a nursery on your route. Once you have shortlisted the nurseries you wish to visit, contact the nursery and ask for information about what they do and offer. High-quality nurseries will either have a brochure/prospectus or set of information they can send you in the post or a website which you can visit. This will help you to gain more information about their services, fees and environment before you visit and allow you to collate the questions you wish to ask based on this information.
Once you have made your appointments to visit the nurseries you will need to think about the questions you want to ask, what you want to look for and note the legal requirements the nursery has to follow. Nurseries come in all shapes and sizes, and you and your child may prefer a larger or smaller nursery or one that offers a particular service - you should take your child on these visits to help you understand what they may prefer. When you first arrive at the nursery for your appointment you should note your first impressions. Ask yourself: • Are there dedicated parking spaces, or somewhere you can pull in easily to take your child out safely? • How does the nursery operate its entry system? • Upon answering the door was the member of staff welcoming, polite, friendly and professional? Was the door answered in a prompt manner? • Does the nursery have a friendly, clean and safe feel to it from those first impressions? Remember if you are not happy with any aspect of the nursery, look elsewhere, and if you leave the visit and have further questions, any quality nursery will be happy to answer these over the phone, or welcome you for a further visit.

Could you be gluten sensitive?
Most of us have experienced bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhea and headaches from time to time, but if these symptoms are appearing more regularly then you could benefit from a gluten-free diet. Gluten is a protein composite found in foods processed from wheat and related grain species, including barley and rye. Most of us can digest this with no trouble but those suffering with gluten sensitivity will develop the aforementioned symptoms. This newly emerging condition may affect up to six per cent of the population and can be easily confused with other gluten related disorders. As a result gluten sensitivity can be hard to detect and diagnose and so it is vital to go to your GP for a thorough medical assessment.
Don’t let cutbacks squeeze goodness from your diet Economic pressures inevitably put a strain on family finances as household budgets bear the brunt of price increases and wage freezes. New research has revealed that one in five Brits are eating less healthily due to the rising cost of living and more than half believe their health has suffered because of the recession. Eating plenty of fruit and veg doesn’t have to be expensive - there are lots of affordable ways to get your five-a-day - and save money. Buy loose fruit and vegetables rather than pre-packed as these can be as little as half the price. Look for supermarket deals on fruit
and vegetables, such as buy one get one free offers. Buy in season - fruit and vegetables are usually cheaper. Shun supermarkets for your local greengrocer or farmers’ market where fruit and veg are usually cheaper. Replace your morning or afternoon snack with a piece of fruit. A banana or apple costs around 20p - a third of the price of most chocolate bars or crisps. Don’t throw away vegetables which are about to go out of date. Use them in stews, soups and casseroles which you can freeze and eat another time.
Youngsters more savvy about saving than adults Young people have a thing or two to teach their elders about being financially savvy. Whether it’s the impact of the economic climate or seeing their parents struggle to make ends meet, the younger generation is getting the message about overspending and the necessity of saving rather than borrowing. Out of 1,000 parents and children
who participated in a savings survey, 81 per cent of youngsters say they have their own bank accounts and have deposited money over the last year. By comparison the average adult consumer has borrowed £4,221, not counting their mortgage. Even children who are too young to get summer jobs are finding ways to save, with 78 per cent saying they save some

What are head lice and nits? Head lice are tiny grey/brown insects. They are about the size of a sesame seed. Head lice cling to hairs but stay close to the scalp, which they feed off. Head lice lay eggs, which hatch after 7-10 days. It takes about 10 days for a newly hatched louse to grow into an adult and start to lay eggs. Treatment for head lice This will take 5-15 minutes to check each head, depending on hair length and thickness. It is also used as a treatment for head lice • Wash the hair in the normal way with ordinary shampoo. • Rinse out the shampoo and put on
lots of ordinary conditioner. • Comb the hair with a normal comb to get rid of tangles. • When the hair is untangled switch to a detection comb. This is a special fine-toothed comb. • Slot the teeth of the detection comb
into the hair at the roots so it is touching the scalp. • Make sure that all parts of the hair are combed by working around the head. • If you see any lice, clean the comb by wiping it on a tissue or rinse it before the next stroke. • After the whole head has been combed, rinse out the conditioner. • Repeat the combing procedure in the wet hair to check for any lice that might have been missed the first time. This needs to be carried out every 3 to 4 days to catch the lice as they hatch.
Working to smash stereotypes Top tips for a perfect The stereotype of mums dropping everything at work and running home when their child has so much as a night’s sleep sniffle has been smashed by a new report into families working in the UK. The study has found women are more engaged at work than men and there is no difference between parents and non-parents regarding levels of commitment to work and professionalism. The Happy Homes Productive Workplaces report also reveals work stress is more damaging to relationships at home than home stress is to work. The study by the One Plus One relationships research charity and Working Families suggests
or all of their pocket money. At the start of 2014, seven out of 10 of us say we are keeping a closer eye on our budgets in a bid to be prudent and financially savvy.
employers should recognise how the two spheres impact on each other and how reducing work stress can create a virtuous circle, bolstering home relationships which can help employees through difficult times in the workplace.
Bedtime should be a chance to unwind, forget the stresses of the day and relax with a good book or a warm drink, before drifting off into a blissful state of sleep. However, the reality is quite different for many people, who find going to sleep an ongoing nightly battle. If you are one of those people who lie awake wondering how some people just seem to drift off effortlessly with no trouble at all, then you may find these top tips quite handy. In order to keep ourselves happy and healthy, both in mind and body, there are several steps that you need to take. Many of us know the importance of eating a healthy, balanced diet and making time to exercise and get our cardio levels up, but some people do not consider the importance of sleep in maintaining the body and keeping you in tip-top condition. Top tips for a perfect nights sleep: Choose a big enough bed Say no to caffeine before bed Take steps to unwind Regulate body temperature Have a warm bath before bed

GETTING ORGANISED
There always seems to be so much to do when trying to arrange a child’s party and never enough time to do it in. Organisation is the answer.
INVITATIONS
About three weeks before the party, you’ll need to send out written invitations. They should include the following information: • Your child’s name and which birthday they are celebrating. • Your address and phone number. • The date, start and finish times of the party. • If you’re having a themed party, your invitation should make it

clear if the guest needs to dress up. • You may need a small map if you’re inviting children whose parents haven’t been to your home before - the same applies if you’re holding the party at a venue that may not be familiar to all guests. It’s also a good idea to ask on invitations for mums to make it clear if their child has any allergies or special dietary requirements – remember to follow this up when you’re organising the party food on with the seating arrangements on the day. Personalised invitations made on your home PC are terrific fun. If you are having a themed party, set the scene right from the start with the party invitation.

VALENTINE’S DAY WHY DO WE CELEBRATE VALENTINE’S DAY? We celebrate Valentine’s Day, because until 1969, it was one of the many Saint’s Days observed by the Catholic Church. It was dedicated to the patron saint of romantic causes, St.Valentine. Although it was removed from the Church’s calendar in 1969, the religious meaning coupled with Valentine’s Day’s roots in Roman paganism have allowed it to continue as a celebration for everyone. Early Christians saw Valentine’s Day as a way to honour St.Valentine, of whom there were actually three. The Catholic Church recognizes three saints by that name, all who were martyred on February 14. The St. Valentine the day is named for was, most likely, a priest in the 3rd century who performed secret marriages when the Roman Emperor Claudius II thought single soldiers were more likely to enlist in the army. That St.Valentine was imprisoned and executed on February 4, 270. It is believed he was responsible for giving the jailer’s blind daughter back her eyesight, and before his execution, he sent her a note saying, “From your Valentine.” The phrase is still widely used on valentines today. It wasn’t until 1537 that St.Valentine’s day was declared an official holiday. England’s King Henry VIII, known for his ways of disposing of wives, declared February 14th a holiday. It was another century and a half before religious devotional cards became non-religious cards to reflect the change in the holiday.
