SPONSORED WHEELATHON Jenson Button would have been proud of the children in Diamond and Pearl Classes at Christ Church First School in Frome. On Friday 6th June the Year One and Reception children brought in their bicycles and scooters to take part in a sponsored Wheelathon. The aim was to complete as many laps around the school as possible in half an hour. All the children joined in enthusiastically including one four year old girl who pushed a doll in a buggy for 16 laps. Eli Diment came in at pole position by completing 22 laps of the school, a total of almost 4 miles. Leader of Early Years, Georgina Muxworthy said “ All the children did so well. Everyone pushed themselves to the best of their ability using the vehicle they were most confident on. I was very impressed to see that so many Reception children were able to confidently ride a bike without stabilisers.” The event was well supported by parents and the children raised £350 in sponsorship. Diamond and Pearl class alongside sponsorship from KandL Structures, County Oak Furniture, Frome Auto Electrical and Moores Recycling, have raised £1200 this year which will be used to purchase a trolley of large hollow blocks for construction.

ROMAN INVASION
TV ADVERT OPPORTUNITY FOR STUDENT Lucky Nuri Andrae who attends Oakfield Academy recently got the opportunity to dance in a film advertisement. Nuri received an urgent last minute call from his dance instructor asking him to take part in the filming which was taking place in Greenpark Station, Bath. Nuri said “It was really fantastic. The film we were making was about letting disabled children experience dance. The main character in the film was a four year old girl in an electric wheelchair, the programme will be shown on the popular Channel 4. We danced for about 3 hours in total, I was really exhausted at the end. We were allowed to wear our own clothes, and so I wore the outfit that I usually wear for my Street Dance classes at the Merlin Theatre. At the end I was paid £40 for my work, which I have since spent on a Beanie Hat which is designed especially for head spins! I would really like to do more dancing in the future. It was a brilliant experience”.

Romans have invaded Trinity First School in Frome to mark the end of a project. The pupils in Bramble Class dressed as Celts and Romans, spent the day marking standards, masks and built catapults to fire at their enemies. They also cooked Roman-style bread in the shape of dormice after finding out during their studies that the Romans used to eat stuffed dormice. Other delicacies included snails soaked in milk, but the children drew the line at that. At lunchtime the Romans and Celts came together to enjoy a sumptuous banquet with honeyed dates, bread dormice, grapes and of course a goblet of blackcurrant wine. The feast was followed by entertainment of singers, jugglers and acrobats. Pupil Pip said: “I didn’t know that being a Roman could be so much fun. It was the best day ever.”

SAFE IN THE SUN The weather is warming up, the days are longer and there’s more time to be outside doing all kinds of fun things. But if you’re going to be out in the sun, especially on a hot day, you need to stay safe. Let’s find out how.
DON’T FEEL THE BURN
Even though the sun is hot, it does cool things. It keeps us warm. It makes flowers and plants grow. It even gives us vitamin D so we can better absorb calcium into our bodies for strong bones. It does all these things by sending down light, which includes invisible ultraviolet rays. These are also called UV rays. Some ultraviolet rays pass through air and clouds and penetrate the skin. When your skin’s been exposed to too many of these rays, you get what’s known as a sunburn. Ouch! Some people get a sunburn faster than others because of their colouring. If you have blond or red hair, light-coloured skin, and light-coloured eyes, you’ll tend to get sunburn more quickly than someone with dark eyes and skin. That’s because you have less melanin. Melanin is a chemical in the skin that protects it from sun damage by reflecting and absorbing UV rays. People with darker skin have more melanin, but even if you have dark hair, dark eyes, or darker-toned skin, you can still get a sunburn. It will just take a little bit longer. Sunburns look bad and feel worse. They can cause blisters on your skin. They can keep you inside feeling sore when
everyone else is outside having fun. They increase your chance of getting wrinkly when you get older. And worst of all, they can lead to skin cancer when you are an adult. Because getting wrinkles and getting sick don’t happen right away, they can seem like things that could never happen to you. But you still need to be careful.
PRIME TIME
You don’t need to hide from the sun completely or wrap up like a mummy to protect yourself. But you should take these two steps: Always wear sunscreen. Take frequent breaks from the sun by going indoors or moving into the shade. These steps are especially important between 10:00 in the morning and 4:00 in the afternoon, when the sun’s rays are strongest. Use a sunscreen with an SPF rating of 30 or higher. Put on sunscreen 15 to 20 minutes before going out in the sun. The letters SPF stand for sun protection factor, and the number rating tells you how much longer you can stay in the sun without getting sunburned. But this isn’t always true, so reapply sunscreen at least every 2 hours, just to be safe. Do this more often if you’ve been swimming or sweating a lot — even if the sunscreen is waterproof. And remember that you can get sunburned
daisy chains You can play in the garden, explore the magical medieval cloisters or learn about the invention of photography in the museum on a day out at Lacock Abbey. more quickly when you’re swimming or boating because the reflection from the water intensifies the sun’s rays. Be sure to put sunscreen all over your body. This includes some places you might not think of, like the tops of your ears, the back of your neck, the part in your hair, your face, and the tops of your feet. You may need some help reaching the back of your body so ask your parents or friends to give you a hand. If you want to block the sun’s rays, wear clothing that you can’t see your hand through. You may still get burned through more sheer fabrics. Wear a baseball cap or other fun hat to block your face from the sun. Don’t forget that your eyes need protection from ultraviolet rays, too. Always wear sunglasses in the bright sun, and make sure they have a label saying that they block UV rays.
DRINK UP!
Drinking water is an important part of staying healthy, especially when it’s hot outside. When you’re sweating, you lose water that your body needs to work properly. And if you’re playing a sport or running around in the sun, you lose even more water, because you sweat that much more. So drink up and don’t wait until you’re thirsty — drinking before you feel thirsty helps keep the water level in your body from dropping too low (dehydration) when it’s hot or you’re sweating a lot with exercise. If you forget and suddenly feel thirsty, start drinking then. There are lots of cool-looking water bottles around, so get one you really like, fill it up, and drink up!
GOT THAT HOT FEELING?
If you’re out in the hot sun or you’re exercising on a hot day, it’s easy to get heat exhaustion. Kids get heat exhaustion when their bodies can’t cool themselves fast enough. A kid with heat exhaustion might feel overheated, tired, and weak. Heat exhaustion can come on suddenly. A person may just collapse when playing soccer or tennis, for example. It can leave someone feeling really tired for days after it happens. Heat stroke is a more serious heat-related illness and can cause someone to stop sweating; to have red, hot skin; and to have a high temperature. The person might become uncoordinated, confused, or even lose consciousness. It requires emergency medical attention. Be sure to tell an adult if you’re hot and you have a headache or feel dizzy or nauseated (like you’re going to throw up). The grown-up will want to get you out of the sun, give you liquids to drink, and take you to a doctor, if necessary. The good news is that the sun doesn’t have to be your enemy if you wear your sunscreen, drink your water, and take breaks when you start to feel too hot. And don’t forget your sunglasses. Not only do they protect your eyes from the sun, they make you look so cool!

PARENT
PAGES Getting kids into nature starts at home A lack of safe and family-friendly green spaces, too much traffic and stranger danger are stopping parents letting their children play outdoors. Excessive health and safety rules, the rise in popularity of computer games and indoor entertainment, and demanding school days are also to blame for barring children from connecting with nature. And the research by the National Trust warns that parents need more support to make the outdoors a part of everyday family life to avoid rearing a generation completely cut off from the natural world. The Natural Childhood Inquiry - which sought submissions from experts and the public on the barriers and the solutions for children’s connection with nature - found that children’s
When to start the pension pot If scaremongering headlines are to be believed, Britain’s population is sleepwalking into a pension crisis. Or, perhaps more accurately, we’re all too busy posting pictures of tonight’s tea on social media platforms, catching up with all those TV shows we missed, and working increasingly long weeks to notice the rather ominous skies forming overhead. And they said the
love of nature is best started in the home. The inquiry follows a report for the Trust by award-winning nature author and wildlife TV producer Stephen Moss which documented children’s declining connection with the outdoors and nature. Respondents said parents need more access to family-friendly, green and natural spaces, as well as more opportunities for children to enjoy the great outdoors. As part of its response to the lack of connection between kids and nature the National Trust launched its 50 Things to do before you’re 11 campaign in May. More than 250 Trust places took part, and in the first two months more than 200,000 activity scrapbooks given away and nearly 20,000 users registered on the 50 Things website.
financial crisis was over. So what does this mean, apart from the fact that Westminster’s attempts to plug the everwidening pensions gap isn’t going far enough? Well, for one thing, it means there should be no perceived bottom age at which you begin paying in to that pot for the future. Indeed, most experts now say you should begin saving for those golden years the moment the first pay cheque hits your bank account. Of course, for many people carrying around student loans and other forms of credit, this may not be easy, but nonetheless you get the picture.
The big decision: Why you should probably switch energy suppliers Whether you receive your bill monthly or quarterly, pay on receipt of the charges or by direct debit, chances are when the utility costs are finally tallied up it’s never great news. Just how much do they think these services are worth, anyway? According to the energy industry regulator, Ofgem, the majority of gas and electricity customers have never switched provider. Ever. If you’re not as astonished as we were, then evidently you’ve moved house once or twice, which can force your hand when it comes to who gives you light and heat. Or perhaps you already understand everything we’re about to say on the importance of using the right to decide, which every customer has in the blessed world of open market competition. If you’re still here, though, let’s assume you’re one of the
Avoid childhood obesity with breakfast As time-starved Britons continue to work longer and longer hours, increasing the chances that the family won’t eat together during the day at all, let alone for both the first and last meals, a new study suggests it has never been more important to ensure that adults and kids sit down to break bread in the same place, at the same time. There are, of course, several factors that need to be taken into account, although they all suggest that a shared meal is much better for the family unity as a whole. In addition to the obvious forming of bonds and displayCould of interestyou in onehelp another that another woman usually help make a happy homestead, breakfasts made by an adult are much more likely tobecome be nutritiousaand good for the mother? youngster, which probably won’t shock anyone blessed with a sugar-addicted adolescent.

majority contributing to the collective £3.5bn per year utility over-spend currently taking place in the UK. That’s a lot of money, and obviously there are a lot of people falling foul of the problem, but even when it’s broken down on an individual basis, there’s a fair amount of cash involved. So what’s putting many of us off switching gas and electricity suppliers? Well, quite simply, it’s the incorrect perception that trying to gauge which provider would make us better off, and the process of changing accounts itself, is a hassle. In reality, the truth couldn’t be more different, with a host of online comparison websites and tools available for free. In short then, take five minutes and seize the opportunity; we guarantee it will prove to be worth your while.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT NURSERY FOR YOU AND YOUR CHILD To help both you and your child, it is critical that both of you are happy and confident with your choice of nursery. Knowing that your child is in a safe, high-quality environment as you go to work or training is hugely reassuring. You should always visit more than one nursery before you make a decision about where you wish to place your child. This will give you a better view of the variety of nurseries available as some will suit you and your child’s individual needs more than others. First of all you need to look at what nurseries are available in your area. You should consider what is going to work best for you; for example, do you want a nursery near home or work/college? As part of this, you should think about what will work for your child, for example, if you have a long commute it may be preferable to locate a nursery on your route. Once you have shortlisted the nurseries you wish to visit, contact the nursery and ask for information about what they do and offer. High-quality nurseries will either have a brochure/prospectus or set of information they can send you in the post or a website which you can visit. This will help you to gain more information about their services, fees and environment before you visit and allow you to collate the questions you wish to ask based on this information. Once you have made your appointments to visit the nurseries you will need to think about the questions you want to ask, what you want to look for and note the legal requirements the nursery has to follow. Nurseries come in all shapes and sizes, and you and your child may prefer a larger or smaller nursery or one that offers a particular service - you should take your child on these visits to help you understand what they may prefer.

BEACH GAMES 1. Fill the Bucket - This is the beach version of a classic party game. You will need two large buckets and two smaller buckets or cups. Separate the family into two equal teams and place the buckets up on the sand, about 50 feet from the edge of the water. At the word “go,” the first person on each team races to the water, fills the smaller bucket or cup and runs back to dump it into the big bucket. Once the person has dumped the water, the cup is handed to the next person on the team who repeats the process. You can continue the game until the buckets are full, or set a time limit and see who can put the most water in the bucket before time is up.
or shells onto the sand trying to get as close to the centre as possible.
2. Sharks and Minnows - This beach game can be played on the shore or in shallow, still water. One person is designated as the shark, with the other players being the minnows. If the players are older, blindfold the shark to make the game more challenging. The shark has to tag the minnows as they run around the shark. As each minnow is tagged, he or she becomes a member of the shark’s team and now help the shark tag the rest of the minnows. The last person who is tagged is crowned the fastest minnow.
5. Beach Golf - You can use any kind of Frisbee or flying disk for this beach golf game. It can be as simple or as complicated as you would like. Set out a number of objects such as overturned buckets, plastic water bottles and umbrellas on the course and have each team try to hit the goals in order.
3. Sand Darts - There are many ways to play this beach game. One of the easiest is to draw a large circle in the sand, with several concentric circles inside that one. The players stand several feet away from the dartboard and toss pebbles

4. Channel Race - This beach game works best if there is a slight slope leading to the water. You will need as many ping pong balls as there are teams. Each team digs a channel from the starting point to the water. At the starting line, the teams set a ping pong ball into the channel, then dump buckets of water into the channel so that the ball moves down to the water. The longer the channel, the louder and more frantic the race becomes.
6. Bocce Ball - Also called bowling or boules, this is a classic beach game in many parts of the world. You can invest in an actual bowling set, or make your own with one small ball and one larger ball for each player. One player throws the target ball onto the sand, and each player has to toss the ball, trying to get as close to the target ball as possible. Check out the rules of beach bocce at beachbocceball.com.

7. Beach Ball Balancing Act - This beach ball game is fun for all ages and is easy to play. You need one inflatable beach ball for every team of two players. The players try to carry the ball across a finish line without using their hands. The ball can be balanced between their heads, pressed between their backs while walking backwards or set between their stomachs and crab-walked to the end. 8. Shell Sort - Sorting shells is a fun way to start a new collection and also teach the little ones a thing or two. Have each child run up and down the beach gathering as many different kinds of shells as they can. Draw a grid in the sand and have them sort the shells into different categories; the kids can sort them by colour, size or type. Make it even more interesting by combining two elements; keeping each large white shell together and each small brown shell together. 9.Treasure Hunt - The beach is the perfect spot to look for buried treasure. This beach game can be as simple or as complicated as you’d like. Take a container (plastic storage containers work just as well as a real treasure chest), put a small treasure such as coins or costume jewellery in it and bury it in a location that is easy to remember. A spot near an unusual bush is much easier to find than in the middle of a wide, empty beach. Write up some “clues” before you get to the beach that will lead the players along the route until they find the treasure. Clues can be things like: “He’s looking out to sea, but unless he looks down, he won’t see me.” (the base
of the lifeguard tower) The players will then dig to find the next clue on the hunt. See if you can get other beachgoers and vendors involved in the clues for even more fun. 10. Beach Volleyball - Beach volleyball games are a tradition with many families. Some are more competitive, following all the rules to the letter while others take a much more casual attitude toward the game If the courts are crowded or you have very young children, draw a line in the sand and practice lobbing the ball over the line rather than the net. Little kids love to play their own version using a big colorful beach ball rather than a harder volleyball. Family games played at the beach can help you make the most of a summer. If the weather is chilly or foggy, getting everyone up off of their towels can keep them warm and entertained while they wait for the sun to poke through. Ball games are the easiest to adapt to the beach; use a big inflatable ball to play baseball, kickball or soccer on the sand. Many families like to play beach games with racquets or soft footballs that are easy to pack and bring along. In addition to organized games, bring a few shovels and think beyond the traditional sand castle by building a sculpture of a mermaid or a “snowman” made of sand. Like most activities, the best beach games are those that include everyone. A simple day at the beach can provide the perfect opportunity for bonding with your family. Playing beach games is a good way to help build happy memories of your time spent together.

INTERNET SAFETY
How to manage your children’s reputation online Private information on the Internet is not so private, and the way your children interact on the web today could come back and harm them later on in adult life. In today’s connected world, nine out of ten children have a mobile phone, and are able to communicate with others as never before. Facebook, instant messaging, Email, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, blogs and forums, with new platforms cropping up as others fall out of fashion. This
can lead to problems for the concerned parent, wandering at which point they should intervene without provoking a tantrum. While this level of communication is for the most part positive, there may be negative consequences in the long run. Recent research showed that more than a third of under-13s use Facebook despite the site’s age limit, and could be using the site without knowing the risks to their personal data. We suggest that parents read these four basic lessons to help better ensure that their children stay on the correct digital highway. Lesson 1- On the web private information is not so private Explain to your kids that every time they update their Facebook status, upload a photo, or send a tweet, their private information has entered the public domain. Even if they delete the photo or remove the tweet, it is more than likely that a problem won’t go away: A friend could have re-tweeted or passed on the information, a photo could have been copied onto another site, and that joke they thought might have gained a couple of new followers might rebound on them. The end result is the same things tend to stick around for a long time in cyberspace. What your child may think is private between their friends becomes public. Lesson 2- Your child’s activity and what they share online becomes their permanent record Every school pupil has lived in fear of damaging their permanent record where every little thing they ever did - good or bad - was kept in a filing cabinet in the school office. Now there’s a new kind of permanent record - the information your child shares online, and content that mentions them, which could be used against them later on in life. University admissions, employers, even potential dates will be able to view this information and form an opinion of your child without their knowledge.Your child needs to know what to keep private, not only about themselves, but those around them. Lesson 3 - Play nice, children It has never been easier to communicate. For the most part, the advantages are clear to see, but the information explosion has also seen a dramatic rise in cyber-bullying. Insults posted on social media sites can be just as hurtful and damaging as saying and doing something in real life. Social media insults can be worse, as the damage follows both the victim and the culprit around. It will always be in their pocket on a smart phone, and because everybody is more connected, there can be no avoiding it. Understanding how their actions online affect others should play an important part in your children’s social media education. Lesson 4 - Your child’s brand It is simple to start monitoring your child’s name and mentions online. There are many free tools such as Google Alerts, Social Mention or even simple searches on Twitter which will both alert you and give you access to anything that is published about your child. When it comes to your child’s online reputation, taking proactive steps should never be considered a bad idea. Educating your child early on about positive steps to take will put them ahead of the curve against many adults who still operate under the assumption that their reputation online isn’t important. Most importantly, don’t be devious about what you are doing. Let your child know you are watching their back online, but make it clear you have no interest in invading their privacy. The concerned parent should pay just as much attention to their children’s online life as they do to their welfare in the real world.

PARTY TIME GETTING ORGANISED - INVITATIONS
About three weeks before the party, you’ll need to send out written invitations. They should include the following information: • Your child’s name and which birthday they are celebrating. • Your address and phone number. • The date, start and finish times of the party. • If you’re having a themed party, your invitation should make it clear if the guest needs to dress up. • You may need a small map if you’re inviting children whose parents haven’t been to your home before - the same applies if you’re holding the party at a venue that may not be familiar to all guests. It’s also a good idea to ask on invitations for mums to make it clear if their child has any allergies or special dietary requirements – remember to follow this up when you’re organising the party food on with the seating arrangements on the day. Personalised invitations made on your home PC are terrific fun. If you are having a themed party, set the scene right from the start with the party invitation.
