NEWS & REVIEWS NEW FOOD WASTE RECYCLING COLLECTION FOR SCHOOLS PROVES POPULAR Primary and secondary schools in Bath and North East Somerset are proving keen to start recycling their food waste. A dozen schools have already signed up to have their food waste recycling collected by Bath & North East Somerset Council, since the service was launched in May. Pupils and staff have been learning – through special visits from the Council’s Waste Campaign officer – all about how the new collections work and benefitting from specialist advice to help them improve their other recycling services as well – which can often save their school money. Research from the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP), shows that around half of all the waste produced in primary schools is food, and around a third in secondary schools. By separating out the food waste it can be processed locally, and recycled into compost for use on farmland and used to make renewable energy. It is much cheaper for the Council to process food waste in this way than to send it to landfill or other specialist treatment. Bath & North East Somerset Council also offers free food waste assemblies to help launch the new collection in schools and can offer other educational support to schools. To find out more about the new collection and our comprehensive range of general waste and recycling collections contact the Waste Campaigns Team via emailwastecampaigns@bathnes.gov.uk or by calling 01225 394204 or visit www.bathnes.gov.uk/businesswaste.

EVERY YEAR THE ANTI-BULLYING ALLIANCE coordinate national Anti-Bullying Week; a week where children and young people, schools, parents and carers come together with one aim: to stop bullying for all. This year they are calling on the school community to take action to stop the bullying of ALL children and young people – including disabled children – those research shows are significantly more likely to experience bullying in schools and the wider community.

• being ignored and left out • being hit, kicked or physically hurt • being threatened or intimidated

WHAT IS BULLYING? Bullying can mean many different things and young people have described bullying as: • being called names • being put down or humiliated • being teased • being pushed or pulled about • having money and other possessions taken or messed about with • having rumours spread about you

BUILDING YOUR SELF-ESTEEM Being bullied can knock anybody’s confidence. A single insult can stay with you for a long time - to the point where you start believing that what the bullies say about you is true - even though it isn’t. Nobody deserves to be bullied and it isn’t your fault that you are the target - it can happen to anybody.

These things can happen at school or at home, but they can also happen online or on social networks. Bullying can also be part of other forms of abuse, including neglect, emotional, physical and sexual abuse.

Talk to someone, they will be able to help you to understand your feelings and also put things in place to deal with the bullies.

HEYMAG.CO.UK | 7

THINK ABOUT AND DISCUSS THESE QUESTIONS... Bullying only happens in schools

Children grow out of bullying

If you report the bullying to a teacher you are a ‘snitch’

It is not bullying …it is banter, can’t you take a laugh?

It’s ok to hit someone who is bullying you, it will stop it

Cyberbullying doesn’t involve physical harm so what’s the harm?

HALLOWEEN For most of the general population Halloween is a night for dressing up, telling ghost stories, having spooky parties, trick-ortreating and pumpkin carving. What most people don’t know is Halloween is actually based on an ancient Celtic holiday known as Samhain (pronounced “sow wan”), which means “summer’s end”. It was the end of the Celtic year, starting at sundown on October 31st and going through to sundown November 1st. It was a night to honour loved ones who had passed on. Celebrated for centuries by the Celts of old, Witches and many other nature based religions, it is the most magical night of the year. It is the Witches’ New Year, and the Last Harvest. Although the religious significance of it has passed for the general public, Halloween is a “magical” night for all!

© National Trust Images/85986. Registered Charity Number 205846.

On this magical night, glowing lanterns, carved from turnips or gourds, were set on porches and in windows to welcome deceased loved ones, but also to act as protection against malevolent spirits. Burning lumps of coal were used inside as a source of light, later to be replaced by candles. When European settlers, particularly the Irish, arrived in America they found the native pumpkin to be larger, easier to carve and seemed the perfect choice for the lanterns. Halloween didn’t really catch on big in this country until the late 1800’s and has been celebrated in so many ways ever since!

HALLOWEEN GAMES THE MUMMY WRAP GAME

You will need at least one roll of toilet paper per team (two would be even better) Divide the children into teams. One child to be the mummy and the others to wrap them up with the toilet paper. You could either make it a race to see how fast you use up the roll or judge by how covered up the mummy is.

SNAP APPLE

Instead of bobbing for apples in a bucket of water (which can really wreak havoc on costumes or face paint!), have kids try to “snap” a bite from an apple hanging on a string. You’ll need apples with stems—tie the string to the stem, then loop it around a tree branch (outside) or a broomstick or suspension curtain rod (inside).

RELAY RACES

Get creative with this one—there are lots of silly ways for children to get from the starting line to the finish! Try having them stagger like zombies, fly on broomsticks like witches, or hop like toads.

PUMPKIN BOWLING

Choose smallish pumpkins with short stems (depending on the ages of your party guests). Set up 1- or 2-litre bottle and tape off a starting line for an instant bowling alley. Fill the bottles with a bit of sand or rice if they topple over too easily. You can work with the children to decorate the bottles with stickers, markers, and other art materials.

SKELETON SCAVENGER HUNT

The children can search the garden or the house on the hunt for skeleton parts (cut from paper, or plastic ones purchased from a toy store or craft shop). For an extra challenge, see if the party guests can reassemble their bony treasures into a complete skeleton set.

MUSICAL PUMPKINS

Cut pumpkin shapes from paper and arrange them on the floor; children must move from pumpkin to pumpkin while music plays, just like in musical chairs. To keep children from being excluded, allow them to share pumpkins as you remove a pumpkin for each round. By the end of the game, all the children have to squeeze onto one spot. For variety, you could also use spider webs, tombstones, or witchy cauldrons for targets.

How to manage your children’s reputation online Private information on the Internet is not so private, and the way your children interact on the web today could come back and harm them later on in adult life. In today’s connected world, nine out of ten children have a mobile phone, and are able to communicate with others as never before. Facebook, instant messaging, E-mail, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, blogs and forums, with new platforms cropping up as others fall out of fashion. This can lead to problems for the concerned parent, wandering at which point they should intervene without provoking a tantrum. While this level of communication is for the most part positive, there may be negative consequences in the long run. Recent research showed that more than a third of under-13s use Facebook despite the site’s age limit, and could be using the site without knowing the risks to their personal data. Lesson 1 On the web private information is not so private. Explain to your kids every time they update their Facebook status, upload a photo, or send a tweet, their private information has entered the public domain. Even if they delete the photo or remove the tweet, it is more than likely a problem won’t go away: A friend could have re-tweeted or passed on the information, a photo could have been copied onto another site, and the joke they thought might have gained a couple of new followers might rebound on them. The end result is the same - things tend to stick around for a long time in cyberspace. What your child may think is private between their friends becomes public. Lesson 2 Your child’s activity and what they share online becomes their permanent record. Every school pupil has lived in fear of damaging their permanent record where every little thing they ever did - good or bad - was kept in a filing cabinet in the school office. Now there’s a new kind of permanent record - the information your child shares online, and content that mentions them, which could be used against them later on in life. University admissions, employers, even potential dates will be able to view this information and form an opinion of your child without their knowledge. Your child needs to know what to keep private, not only about themselves, but those around them. Lesson 3 Play nice, children. It has never been easier to communicate. For the most part, the advantages are clear to see, but the information explosion has also seen a dramatic rise in cyber-bullying. Insults posted on social media sites can be just as hurtful and damaging as saying and doing something in real life. Social media insults can be worse, as the damage follows both the victim and the culprit around. It will always be in their pocket on a smart phone, and because everybody is more connected, there can be no avoiding it. Understanding how their actions online affect others should play an important part in your children’s social media education.

Lesson 4 Your child’s brand. It is simple to start monitoring your child’s name and mentions online. There are many free tools such as Google Alerts, Social Mention or even simple searches on Twitter which will both alert you and give you access to anything that is published about your child. When it comes to your child’s online reputation, taking proactive steps should never be considered a bad idea. Educating your child early on about positive steps to take will put them ahead of the curve against many adults who still operate under the assumption their reputation online isn’t important. Most importantly, don’t be devious about what you are doing. Let your child know you are watching their back online, but make it clear you have no interest in invading their privacy. The concerned parent should pay just as much attention to their children’s online life as they do to their welfare in the real world.

HOW TO REDUCE SIBLING RIVALRY It is thought that a gap of between two and four years will promote the worst sibling jealousy and that a gap of over five years will produce the least, but this is by no means always the case. Do not despair; your child is not the devil’s spawn, just a normal child expressing his feelings in the only way he knows how.Young children are very self-focused and even if they will share with friends’ children on a visit, that is very far removed from having to “share” every day. There are ways you can help alleviate his fears. Try to persuade family and friends to make a fuss of your eldest child as they normally do before they make any fuss of the new baby. This is particularly important when a favourite relation of your child’s visits. Give your child big boy privileges the baby cannot have and point this out to him. Try and make sure you give your older child special one-to-one attention when the baby is sleeping or being cared for by another adult. All these little things help to reassure your child that he or she is still important and loved even though the little alien has arrived. This often helps to stem the jealousy and make the baby more acceptable. As baby grows let your child, if he wants to, help with everyday tasks like bath time, nappy changing and mealtimes but don’t force the

issue. Some siblings will never be best friends due to individual personalities but the vast majority will grow up happily together despite the rocky start. And don’t listen to those who tell you their children adored each other from day one because there is no child born who did not resent a brother or sister at some time.

ENJOYING TIME WITH THE FAMILY With some preparation and a few strategies, it is possible to take your children out to eat. Children need to be taught what behaviour is expected of them in restaurants. They cannot be expected to know automatically since some of the rules of restaurant are going to be a bit different from home. When children have mastered behaving during the meal itself, a family can venture out to the more family friendly restaurants that have table service. One good way to tell a family friendly restaurant from others is that they will provide high chairs and booster seats, and they have a children’s menu. You should be at the restaurant a little before the child’s regular dinnertime so that they will not be starving before the food arrives. Regardless of how a restaurant may seem, if the service is slow by adult standards, you will be miserable, so opt out of those places. You will want to pack a bag of quiet toys, colouring books and crayons, but these distractions may wear out. One hint for packing toys for a truly critical experience for the child is to pack new or unfamiliar toys. They will be more entertained by something they have never seen, if you have chosen well. It is good to always have a few of these types of toys hidden away for this purpose. Packing snacks has dubious value. If the child eats before their real dinner comes, they will still need to wait while everyone else eats.

Sometimes if the waiting gets too hard it is helpful for an adult to take the child to the lobby or outdoors for a few minutes for a change of scene. You will need to use this method judiciously because you do not want to be disturbing other diners by walking past their tables frequently. You also do not want to give your child the impression that wandering around the restaurant is acceptable behaviour, because it is not. Be certain to remember all your good table manners in the restaurant. Just because someone else is doing the cleaning up is no excuse to play with the food or leave a mess. Be polite to your server, and leave a generous tip if they have tried to accommodate the extra demands of your family. Not every restaurant experience with young children will be a great one. Some days you may have to ask the server to package your food for take-out, and spend more time covering your expectations with your child at home. Do not be discouraged. Every parent has had to deal with a cranky child at one time or another in a public situation. Sooner or later your children will get the hang of restaurant eating. Soon you will both be enjoying eating out as a family. All of the local restaurants shown on these pages welcome families and are able to supply high chairs and children’s menu’s to suit your child and to ensure your local dining experience is one you will want to carry out regularly.

REMEMBRANCE DAY SUNDAY 9TH NOVEMBER

The second Sunday of November is Remembrance Sunday, but what does it all mean and what are you meant to do? At 11am men, women and children all across Britain hold a two minute silence to remember the millions who have died in war. The silence is usually observed at war memorials, cenotaphs, religious services and shopping centres throughout the country. The Royal Family, along with top politicians and religious leaders, gather at The Cenotaph in Whitehall, London, for a service. Wreaths are laid beside war memorials by companies, clubs and societies. People also leave small wooden crosses by the memorials in remembrance of a family member who died in war. What is Armistice Day? Armistice Day is on 11 November. It’s also known as Remembrance Day. A two minute silence is observed

at 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month because this is when World War I, or the Great War, ended in 1918. But now, this anniversary is used to remember all the people who’ve died in wars since World War I. Why do we hold a two minute silence? The first two minute silence in Britain was held on 11 November 1919, when King George V asked the public to observe a silence at 11am. This was one year after the end of World War I. He made the request so “the thoughts of everyone may be concentrated on reverent remembrance of the glorious dead”. Why do we wear poppies? Poppies are red flowers which are worn to show others that you are remembering those who died for their country. The reason poppies are used is because they are the flowers which grew on the battlefields after World War I ended. Poppies are also used to raise money for servicemen and women who are still alive but whose lives have been changed by war. The charity which runs the Poppy Appeal is called The Royal British Legion. Each year, volunteers will sell these poppies in the street all over Britain. You can decide how much money you want to give to the poppy sellers.

WINTER SAFETY Keep warm and safe - light up and get a grip! Riding On Ice and Snow Be gentle and cautious. Reduce your speed by slowing down rather than braking and break gently only when needed. Reduce tyre pressure. Mountain bikes are excellent for snow. Wear a peaked cap to keep falling snowflakes out of your eyes and from your face.

If you are cycling after dark the law demands, that as well as reflectors, including yellow reflectors on your pedals you use a clear white light at the front and a red one at the rear of your bicycle. Front lights usually attach to your handlebars and back lights fasten to your seat post.

Clothing And Essential Bicycle Accessories Wrap up well - wear several layers of protective clothing to keep warm. Warm hands are essential for proper braking, but take care that gloves or mittens do not impede the use of the brake levers. A woolly hat or balaclava will restrict heat loss from the head. Warm socks and shoes are also important. Special high visibility clothing such as cycling jackets and trousers with reflective bands and strips for arms and legs are very effective.

CHRISTMAS IS COMING too many people who dread the expense of what should be a celebratory time don’t prepare early enough for the festive season and end up using credit. CAP’s top tips are: 1. Decide what you can save from your monthly wages between now and Christmas. 2. Work out what you aim to spend on presents, food and going out and decide what you will do and what you are happy to cut back on. 3. Make a few purchases every month to spread the cost so you will be able to take advantage of any bargains as they come up. 4. If you want to buy your child something special, speak early to relatives about clubbing together to cope with the cost while managing expectations with your offspring.

CHRISTMAS IS COMING - HERE’S HOW TO COPE It’s no good sticking your head in the sand - Christmas is coming and the sooner you start preparing for it the better off you’ll be. That’s the forthright message from money experts who are urging people who can’t face the thought of the festive season and the bills which go with it - to take a pragmatic approach to the inevitable and act now to ensure that unavoidable spending doesn’t turn into New Year debt. While many of us are still bemoaning the early death of our not-quite-summer, the weeks are marching on and the frightening truth is that it’s less than 100 days until the biggest day of the year. With this in mind, debt experts have launched a campaign urging people to start saving as the calendar inevitably counts down to what for many - apart those who still believe in Santa - is a financially stressful time. The campaign, spear-headed by Christians Against Poverty, says

CAP chief executive Matt Barlow says, “It is easy to put Christmas to the back of your mind when it feels like we’re barely finished with summer. But we want people to use this marker to have a reality check. “Christmas will come - and they need to have a plan because we all know it’s easy to get carried away nearer the time. No one wants to start the New Year up to their eyes in debt and stress and a bit of preparation now will help to avoid that. “You may never have planned ahead before but it really takes the pressure off, leaving you relaxed to really enjoy what matters. In the current economic climate, we can’t afford to be unwise about our finances.” Christmas savings club and schemes have revived in popularity as budget concerns take priority. Whether offered by the Post Office, national retailers, shops, social clubs or local providers they all work in roughly the same way. Savers pay in small amounts of money throughout the year to save for Christmas or another event and when the big day arrives, the savings are exchanged for vouchers, gift cards or services. But remember these savings clubs and schemes are not regulated by the Financial Services Authority so you cannot get money from the Financial Services Compensation Scheme if your provider goes bust. Alternatively, a Christmas savings account from a bank or building society may be more suitable - with the added advantage funds are locked in until D or C-Day.

KEEPING THE CHRISTMAS BUZZ ALIVE AS THE KIDS GROW UP Even for parents, Christmas time with young children can be a truly wonderful experience. With the children still fully immersed within the magic of the Christmas story, it is virtually impossible for the parents to not get at least a little carried along on the wave of excitement too. As the kids begin to get a little bit older, however, the magic can slowly start to disappear. This can be hugely disappointing for both children and parents alike. There are ways to keep the magic alive, however. Accept Christmas Has Changed The first and most important step is to simply accept that Christmas has changed, and that if it is still going to be magical, it needs to be different. All families will go through that one transition year, where Christmas just isn’t the same anymore, but after, it is time for a change. Alternative Christmas Options Although there are some wonderful aspects of a traditional Christmas, there is nothing wrong with changing it a little, from time to time. If the magic of Christmas has started to fade, it is worth looking at some alternative ideas. Winter Sun One option could be to replace gift-giving with a family holiday. The costs will be similar and, when children get to a certain age, they will be more excited about a two-week break in the

sun, than new clothes and computer games. This will also give parents a chance to get away for a much-needed holiday. If you still want to be with the rest of your family, you could plan a large group vacation. This will also reduce the costs, with shared accommodation and transport etc. being much cheaper. Spend Christmas Day Out of the House Especially with teenagers, spending the whole day cooped-up at home can be too much. Why not find a great pub or restaurant where you can spend at least part of the day, in order to get some much-needed space? You could also plan to meet friends and family there. Ski trip A ski trip is the perfect treat at Christmas, if you can find some good snow. Although it can be expensive, if it comes at the cost of other presents, it will certainly be affordable. The benefit of a ski trip over a summer sun holiday is that there is always something for everyone to be doing. It can be energetic, for those testosterone-riddled teenagers, or relaxed and laid-back for their parents. There is nothing better than having a nice cold beer and some great food halfway up a piste. Keep Everybody Happy Fundamentally, all of these above options revolve around the same premise, which is to keep everybody happy. This can be increasingly complicated as children get older. It is also difficult if there is a big age-gap between the children. The best way to ensure that everyone is happy is to discuss it with the family and then seek a compromise. These things rarely run 100% smoothly, but if you work together, you are sure to get the best results. Most importantly, though, don’t forget your own enjoyment in a bid to please the children.

FIREWORK NIGHT Tips for a safe Firework Night

Children should never play with fireworks. If you give children sparklers, make sure they keep them outside and away from the face, clothing, and hair. Sparklers can reach 1,800°F (982°C) hot enough to melt gold. Buy only legal fireworks (legal fireworks have a label with the manufacturer’s name and directions; illegal ones are unlabeled), and store them in a cool, dry place. Never try to make your own fireworks. Always use fireworks outside and have a bucket of water and a hose nearby in case of accidents. Don’t hold fireworks in your hand or have any part of your body over them while lighting. Wear some sort of eye protection, and avoid carrying fireworks in your pocket — the friction could set them off. Point fireworks away from homes, and keep away from brush and leaves and flammable substances. Light one firework at a time and never relight a dud. Don’t allow children to pick up pieces of fireworks after an event. Some may still be ignited and can explode at any time. Soak all fireworks in a bucket of water before throwing them in the rubbish bin. Think about your pet. Animals have sensitive ears and can be extremely frightened or stressed on the firework night. Keep pets indoors to reduce the risk that they’ll run loose or get injured.

If a child is injured by fireworks, immediately go to a hospital. If an eye injury occurs, don’t allow your child to touch or rub it, as this may cause even more damage. Also, don’t flush the eye out with water or attempt to put any ointment on it. If it’s a burn, remove clothing from the burned area and run cool, not cold, water over the burn (do not use ice). CALL AN AMBULANCE IMMEDIATELY. Fireworks are meant to be enjoyed, but you’ll enjoy them much more knowing your family is safe. Take extra precautions this firework night and your evening will be a blast!
