Michael Berkin On Sunday 7th October pupils from the Avon Dance Academy, Chew Valley Dancing School and Keyford Dancing School, danced with Michael Berkin, ex pupil and head boy of the Royal Ballet School, who went on to dance with the Royal Ballet, The Birmingham Royal Ballet, Royal New Zealand Ballet, Ballet Ireland and The Northern Ballet. Michael gave classes to the girls and they also learnt dances from famous ballets such as The Nutcracker, Coppelia and La Fille Mal Gardee. This is the 2nd time that Michael has visited our schools, and we are planning more classes with him to include tuition in pointe work. This is an amazing opportunity for pupils , not only to be taught by a professional who has danced in such prestigious ballet companies, but to be given an insight into the life of a professional classical dancer. We are currently organising workshops with Nick Yeoman a performer from Tap Dogs. This will be taking place on December the 5th. For information on the dancing schools which cover Keynsham, Saltford, Chew Magna, Timsbury, Camerton and Dunkerton, contact 01761 452073 or 01761 479026.

Muddy Play On Tuesday 20th November the awful weather did not stop the pupils, teachers, parents and grandparents of Castle Primary School enjoying an afternoon of ‘Muddy Play’. Activity stations with a mud theme were set up around the school field for everybody to get stuck in to. There was an opportunity to help make a mud swamp, rake leaves, make the walls of a mud hut as well as problem solving and imaginative play. The Muddy Play session was enjoyed by everyone and it’s safe to say that everybody was thoroughly muddy!
Tae Kwon Do Pupils at Chew Stoke Primary School have been very fortunate this term to be visited by Andy Moles School of Tae Kwon Do where they have been receiving taster sessions in martial arts. Three groups of around 20-25 children have received lessons being taught kicking, stretching as well as discipline, respect, control techniques and ultimately encouraging exercise. All pupils that took part in the taster sessions thoroughly enjoyed themselves and at the same time Andy was also encouraging the children to count in Korean as they performed particular moves. Andy Moles has classes at Chew Valley Sport Centre for beginners on a Monday & Wednesday from 6pm until 7pm and on a Thursday from 4pm until 5pm for all ages and all grades. For further information on the classes you can visit www.andymoletkd.co.uk or call 01275 343356.
Double Trouble The Staff at Chew Stoke Church School thought they were seeing double on the first day of term –when no less than three sets of twins all started together in Hedgehog Class! These latest additions make a total of eight sets of twins at the school altogether. Headteacher, Mr Stephen Bailey is well qualified to cope with the situation, he is not only the father of twins himself but also a grandfather of twins too ! Around The World In... just 5 Days !
St Keyna’s school council
Children at Chew Stoke Church School have been on a whistle stop tour of the world in just one week! Each of the classes studied a different continent during their recent “International Week”, with this year’s learning focusing on “Flora & Fauna”. The Children learned about penguins and bats, icebergs and igloos. They cooked apple flapjack and curry and learned about African drumming and Australasian art. The highlight of the week was the whole school visit to Bristol Zoo, where a great day was had by all the children meeting animals from across the world.
St Keyna’s school council have been very busy since September when the new members were elected. Two children from each class, one boy and one girl, were elected by their classmates to join the school council who meet once a fortnight on a Friday.
Pictured: Danielle holding a giant European cockroach at Bristol Zoo.
Each class has a suggestion box where pupils can put forward ideas for the school council to discuss which can be anything from a new football net to Lego for Year 5. The school council also discuss fund-raising ideas to enable some of the suggestions to come to life. The PlayPod is one of the school councils major achievements. The PlayPod encourages imaginative play using items of scrap which all the children at the school thoroughly enjoy. Keep up the great work council members!

Classrooms without walls East Harptree Primary School is nestled in the beautiful, natural surroundings of the Mendip countryside and located at the heart of the village of East Harptree. We strive to create an environment that encourages confident and enquiring children to participate fully in the world around them and find that an enjoyable way to do this is through Forest School. Forest School is an innovative educational approach to outdoor play and learning. By visiting The Coombe in East Harptree on a regular basis the children have the opportunity to learn about the natural environment, how to handle risks, use their own initiative to solve problems and co-operate with others. Much research has shown this to have great benefits for their education in the classroom. Under the watchful eye of our qualified Forest School Instructors all of our 76 children get a chance to participate in this activity as part of our curriculum, in small groups throughout the year, in all weathers (except electrical storms and high winds) tailored to their age group. They get muddy, use full size tools, light fires & build shelters. Many of the sessions are linked to what they are learning at the time, back in school. The highlight of the Forest School year is an overnight camp undertaken by our Year 6 Leavers’ Class who must build their own shelters & cook their own food.

Remembrance Day Pupils and staff at Chew Stoke Church School, were allowed to wear their scout and guide uniforms to school for the day to honour this year’s Remembrance Day. The whole school took part in a short service led by Reverend Victor Barley. Children from the Reception Class had made their own poppies to wear to the service, whilst the older children had made some giant poppies to display in school. St Keyna Circus Skills Pupils at St Keyna Primary School have started a very interesting after school club, Circus Skills! Following a performance from Eclipse Arts Circus Skills at the school summer fayre which generated a huge amount of interest from the pupils the school arranged for an after school club to start where children can learn a whole host of circus skills from juggling and hula hooping to walking the tight-wire and riding a unicycle. Not only is this club great fun but its also a great form of exercise. If you would like any further information on Eclipse Arts Circus Skills you can visit www.eclipsearts.com email circus@gmx.com or call 07770 568 311.
St Keyna Forest School
Pupils from Years 1 & 2 at St.Keyna Primary School have been getting outside in all weathers to take part in Forest School. The pupils go outside, whatever the weather, on a Monday and Tuesday to investigate the great outdoors. Mrs Harris (Year 1 teacher) and Mrs MacGrain (Year 2 teacher) along with the help of teaching assistants and some parent helpers have been coaching the children to use their sensory skills to describe different textures, smells and look. Recently the children had made an ‘Autumn Potion’, the children mixed leaves that they had found with mud and added Rosemary and other herbs to give the potion a nice aroma. Pupils have also made small animal shelters using leaves, twigs and anything else that they could find.

Makes 4 glasses Ingredients Cranberry juice 4 cinnamon sticks 8 star anise Lemon Orange Method Slice the lemon and orange. Put four slices aside to garnish. Put all the ingredients into a pan and warm through, stirring well. Ladle into cups or warmed glasses (if poured directly into cold glasses they might crack). Make sure each glass gets a cinnamon stick. Decorate with the slices of lemon. Delicious and warming - perfect for Christmas!
Ingredients 175g soft unsalted butter 175g caster sugar 3 eggs 400g plain flour 75g cocoa powder 1 teaspoon salt 200g white chocolate Green writing icing Glace cherries 1 teaspoon baking powder Method Pre-heat the oven to 180C / Gas Mark 4. Cream together the butter and sugar. Beat in the eggs. Sift the flour, cocoa powder, salt and baking powder in to the bowl and mix in well to form a dough. Wrap the dough in cling-film and pop into the fridge for at least 1 hour. Roll out the dough to about 1/2 cm thick. Use a large circle cutter to cut 12 circles. Place on a lined or greased baking tray and bake for 12 minutes. The biscuits should be browning slightly but still spongy to touch. They will firm up as they cool. When the biscuits are cool, melt the white chocolate. Coat half of each biscuit in white chocolate. Trim the glace cherries into small pieces and put them on to each biscuit to form the holly berries. Use writing icing to draw on the holly leaves.

Dark and light brown felt Needle and thread Ribbon (optional) Fabric glue Pair of wiggle eyes Red pompom Red fabric paint 2 lolly sticks Toy stuffing
Instructions:
Cut 2 pairs of antlers from dark brown felt. With a small running stitch sew the antlers together. Slip a lolly stick into each antler. Cut two light brown ovals for the ears. Fold in half and secure with a couple of stitches. Cut two face shapes from light brow n felt. If you plan on hanging the reindeer, cut a length of ribbon and slip the ends between the two felt faces so the ribbon hangs from the top of the head. Slip the antlers and ears between the two faces too. With a small running stitch sew the faces together, securing the ribbon, antlers and ears into place. Leave a gap with which to stuff the reindeer. Fill the reindeer with toy stuffing. Be careful not to overfill: it should sit fairly flattish. Sew the gap closed. Glue on the eyes and pompom nose. *NEW YOU* Christmas is nearly here and it’s time to get out your party clothes and enjoy the festive season. You’ve spent the last few weeks Christmas shopping for presents and what seems to be enough food to feed the five thousand. You’ve lost count of the number of presents you’ve wrapped and cards that you’ve written. You’ve been making costumes for nativity plays and been a taxi service for the children. You’ve been tangled up in Christmas lights and decorated the house to look like a Winter wonderland...it’s now time for you to enjoy the festive season and do something for yourself. New Year’s Eve creeps up on all of us and before we know it we are celebrating the start of yet another year. We contemplate where the last year has disappeared and discuss our New Year’s resolutions, even though the majority of us have forgotten our resolutions from the previous year...but not this year...2013 is going to be the year you stick to yours. It’s a brand new year so why not make it a brand new you to match. Around 7 million people in the UK make New Year’s resolutions to improve their health, but sticking to it in the dark winter months can be particularly tough. However it’s worth remembering that just 15 minutes of exercise a day can increase life expectancy by up to 3 years! Exercise doesn’t have to be something that you dread each week and to ensure that you stick to your New Year’s resolution of exercising more make sure that you find something that you love and that you find fun. If you’re looking to start running why not set yourself a goal, maybe it’s a sponsored run or even a half marathon by the end of the year!
Exercise classes can also be a great way to get fit, make friends and have fun. There are so many exercise classes that you could try from Yoga and Pilates that help develop core strength and tone the body to Zumba and high impact aerobics that will really get you burning calories and toning all at the same time as shaking your stuff! Aerobic classes have some great health benefits: However, running, aerobic classes or joining a gym might not be for you, you may not have the time or it might just simply not be your cup of tea. But all is not lost there are some other simple changes that you can make to help develop the new healthy you: If you are thinking about dieting you should always consult with your GP before starting. If you have decided a diet is one of your New Year’s resolutions you could join a slimming club where you will be able to meet new people who are also experiencing the same challenge as you. A slimming club is a great way to ensure that you are following a healthy eating plan and at the same time you can share you successes and even your bad days with people who understand. Many slimming groups offer generous eating plans making slimming easier, which is good news if you have enjoyed numerous mince pies, chocolates and turkey curries over Christmas and are worried about being on a strict regime. With professional support and encouragement you will certainly shift those excess pounds.

Rebecca the vet says “Did you know it can be dangerous for dogs to eat m any Christmas food s and treats especially min ce pies, choc olate, turkey bones and chrismas cake.”
Allowing your children to have pets starting at an early age is a great way to teach them how to handle responsibility. More than this, children who grow up taking care of at least one pet tend to adopt a more caring attitude towards animals and other people. It is easy to see why having pets around is an important part of raising children.
