The £1 challenge for budding entrepreneurs This year the children of Farrington Gurney have chosen to support the Downs Syndrome charity ‘Ups and Downs South West’. They have already had many fund raising ideas from a mufti day, cupcake competition, tombola and cake sale, raised £234. However, this term the children have used the money from the Easter tombola and have all been given the challenge to raise money for the charity. Every child was loaned £1 for four weeks in month of May to fund a profit-making enterprise enabling them to return the £1 with profits. The children could work individually, in pairs, or in groups. This certainly bought out the Alan Sugar in most of the school. They signed a contract to promise to use the £1 wisely and always stay safe. The children have had cake and sweet sales, made bread to order, devised competitions to name the bear or guess the sweets in a jar, washed cars, sold second hand books, sold ice creams, sold pancakes, drawn portraits, made key rings and sold more cakes! Mrs Welch the Deputy Head said, “This tremendous effort provided the children a valuable learning experience about investment and return and making a business plan.” The children raised an amazing return £800. A cheque was presented to Alison Powell from ‘Ups and Downs’ at our weekly celebration assembly. She congratulated the children on their amazing achievement and there continuing support for the charity. Next term the children are planning a sponsored obstacle circuit on July 1st so watch this space to see how much more they can raise for this worthwhile charity.

Fathers’ Friday campaign Following the success of last year’s Fathers’ Friday campaign across BANES, High Littleton Primary School once again opened its doors to dads and granddads. This campaign was to promote the role of fathers in their children’s lives. Fathers were invited to spend the morning or an afternoon in class with their children. Some fathers even decided to spend the whole of lunchtime at school! The fathers were able to spend quality time with their children learning all about maths and literacy, whilst some even took part in a very competitive game of rounders! This gave them an opportunity to see the progress that their children were making and how they could further engage in their children’s learning. We were delighted to invite so many, with almost 60 fathers taking up this opportunity. We’re already looking forward to next year!
Beavers go pre-historic Thirty Beaver Scouts from High Littleton and Radstock slept over at Radstock Scout Hall recently, enjoying a prehistoric theme. The boys and girls, all aged between six and eight, spent the time playing games and doing craft activities, which included making plaster casts of fossils, creating dinosaur masks and collages. The oldest creature present was ‘Arnold’ the 100 million year-old ammonite which had been unearthed a few weeks earlier in the Scout hall grounds. A planned visit to Writhlington Batch to find more fossils had to be abandoned due to the wet weather. For many of the Beavers, this was their first night away from home, and a real adventure.
Themed week; space and time As part of our themed week on space and time, Year 4 at St Johns Primary School in Midsomer Norton decided to travel back and forth in time. Not only did we build a time travelling machine, but we turned our classroom into a travel agency. We named our company TBT, turn back time. We developed a community of enquiry using the Mantle of the Expert as a vehicle to aid learning. We employed staff, wrote a mission statement for our company and looked at our wider community for inspiration. We learnt a range of key skills and objectives linked to our skills based curriculum and most importantly of all we learnt about collaboration and countries around the World.

Midsomer Norton football club
Midsomer Norton Football Club completed another successful season with five age groups from Under 8s to Under 14s competing in the local leagues. An attempt to start a new Under 7 team was unsuccessful last season as nobody stepped forward to run the team. As a Charter Standard Club all coaching staff are required to obtain an FA qualification which includes First Aid and Safeguarding Children. A Criminal Record Check is also required and all these requirements are paid for by the club for anyone interested in coaching new teams. Training will be held at Welton Rovers for 4 consecutive Saturdays commencing on 15 Jun 13 for children in Years 2 and 3 in Sep 13 in an attempt to get an Under 7 and Under 8 team for season 2013/14. Coaches will be required to run these teams. The club also enjoyed another matchday experience at Yeovil Town where the young players had a coaching session from the Yeovil development coaches before watching a game. The new season will begin in September 2013 so if you want more details on the club please visit their website www.midsomernortonfootballclub.co.uk or contact the club secretary on 01761 419692.
Saxon explorers rafting on the Avon Members of the Saxon Explorer Scout Unit based in Midsomer Norton took to the River Avon recently for a rafting evening. The rafts were built out of pioneering poles roped together, with oil drums for buoyancy. Rafting is just one of the many adventurous and fun activities which Explorer Scouts enjoy. During the summer Saxons will be camping on the North Devon Coast just outside Lynton. The main activities on offer will be an overnight hike on Exmoor, sailing and canoeing and climbing. In terms of other upcoming activities they embark on their introduction programme for new starters on 18th June with crazy golf in Bath, followed later by climbing, sailing, an activity evening at Chelwood and baseball. Anyone interested in Explorer Scouting in Midsomer Norton should visit the Unit’s website: http://saxonsesu.ukscouts.org.uk/

Westfield Tag Rugby Westfield Primary School’s tag rugby team took part in a tournament in Bath recently, after several matches the tournament was cancelled due to bad weather. The Westfield team were one of 4 teams which got through to the next level. The team came 2nd in a match at Millfield and they then played a final at Millfield and finished joint 1st. The team have been awarded 2nd place in the South West. Huge congratulations to all that took part.
A Postcard from our Year 6 camp... Blue skies, sun, mud and enthusiasm was the theme of our week on camp last week! We’ve had a fabulous time pushing ourselves to our limits; whether it’s been squeezing through small spaces in caving, climbing that extra wrung up the ladder of a colossal tree, or trusting to guide us blindfolded through a spider’s web, everyone’s done one thing that’s really challenged them. Our final night saw us all exchange stories around the campfire, show off our wonderful talent of singing and finished with the compulsory toasting of marshmallows. What an amazing week away... St John’s CE VA Primary School
Stars of the week at St Benedict’s Primary School Isabelle, Isabel, Rose, James, Lewis, Theo, Jack, Wiktoria, Finley, Euan, Bathshewa, Scott, Charlie and Danielle have all been awarded the star of the week certificate for hard work and excellent behaviour, well done to you all.

Peasedown St John Centenary Peasedown St John Primary School celebrates its centenary this year and is commemorating its 100th birthday in style! Mr Edgar Pound was the Headteacher when the school opened in 1913 and the pupils at Peasedown St John Primary have been busy finding out how the school has changed over the past 100 years. The children began the celebrations back in February by creating new designs for the school logo. Grace Gard in Year 2 won the competition and her design is being used on the letterhead and website for the whole of the centenary year. The children then designed Centenary tea- towels with self portraits of all 535 pupils and 70 members of staff. They also put their Literacy skills to good use by writing to local businesses and members of the community asking for donations to enable the school to provide a commemorative mug for all the pupils. The response was excellent and this week every child will receive their very own celebratory mug to remind them of this very special year. Due to the generosity of local companies the children have also been able to take part in visits to Radstock museum and drama workshops at Writhlington school to help them gain an understanding of what school life would have been like for pupils 100 years ago. Ex-pupils were invited into school to be interviewed about their memories and the children were fascinated to hear about the old swimming pool, the upstairs hall, the separate entrances for boys and girls (which can still be seen today), getting ink pots filled from the cupboard under the stairs and the outside toilets. All the children agreed they thought the school was a nicer place to learn now than back in 1913! The celebrations culminated this week with a Centenary Parade along Bath Rd with everyone dressed up in costumes from the past 100 years. The parade ended with a traditional picnic of bread and cheese on the school field - exactly like in 1913. The children have created a wonderful exhibition of their work about the centenary in the school hall which members of the community and parents have viewed during open afternoons. Every child has been able to take home a specially commissioned Centenary mug - sure to become a collector’s item! Parent, Mrs Shepherd, provided a spectacular centenary cake which was cut by Chair of Governors Linda Day, and Councillor Neil Butters before being shared with visitors who were entertained with songs and poems performed by current pupils. Local artists Frances Whittaker, Angela and Jasmine Nash worked with every child to create beautiful mosaic pieces which depict the village and school through the last century. A fantastic design by Eloise Evans in Year 4 was used to create the artwork
ments D
which is on display on the outside of the school building for all to see. The school’s IT support team, Eye -Tech donated 100 balloons with the Centenary logo displayed which were released on the final day of celebrations. The grand finale of Peasedown St John Primary school’s celebrations was a specially written production ‘The Magic Penny’ whose script was written by talented parent Petra Schofield and equally talented music teacher Myra Barretto. The rousing songs which were especially written for the production were performed with gusto by the school choir and the children acted their hearts out to tell the story and history of the school over the past 100 years. Current Headteachers David Tilling and Julia Battersby said “It is a privilege to be part of such a special school as it celebrates its 100th birthday. The children have thoroughly enjoyed planning and being involved in a wide range of exciting events which we hope they will remember for a very long time. There certainly has been a lot to learn about from the past 100 years and we hope that the school continues to be an amazing place of learning into the future. Who knows what the celebrations will be like in 2113!”

HOLIDAY CLUBS Holiday play schemes can be run by the local council or privately, for the whole holiday, a week at a time or just a few days. Some play schemes concentrate on a particular sport or interest, e.g. football or drama, while others are a mixture of activities and even outings. They can be a lifesaver if you work, but even if you’re at home too they can offer a break within the school holidays for your children and you! Your child will have the opportunity to meet and form new friendships with similar aged local children. Holiday play schemes can be a great way for children to discover new interests and explore new activities and can be an energyburner. You can pre-book for the days that suit you, from just one or two days to whole weeks. Popular holiday schemes are booked up very early so you need to be quick off the mark and please do check with the scheme that it will be suitable for your child. Many of these schemes also run after school and weekend activities during term time and the Summer holidays are a great time to enrol your child into a club ready for September and the beginning of the new school year. Many sports clubs will be enrolling new students for September, so if your children would like to start a new activity, now is the perfect time to arrange this.

ARTS & CRAFTS TREASURE CHESTS
DECORATE YOUR SHOES
Here is a simple way for children to store their collections. Make an accordion fold in a strip of paper and glue the ďŹ rst and last pages to the inside of a boxes lid and bottom. Keep some pages empty so that the collection can grow.
Why not create your own fashion design on your shoes. Using fabric pens and fabric paint you can be the talk of the town with your funky shoes.
ROCK PAINTINGS
Decorating stones and rocks is a great way for children to show their creativity this Summer. Collect a series of stones of different shapes and sizes and decorate them with pens or paints. You can turn your stones into people, animals and even monsters.

OUT AND
ABOUT
Turn off the tv, lock up the PlayStation and have a great day out with the children. The Summer holidays are nearly here and it is a great time to spend some family time together and take some time out from the hustle and bustle of the normal daily routine. Whenever school holiday time comes around, are you left asking the same question? Where can I take my children to experience a great family day out? So how can you make the most of the precious time you and your children get together? If you and your partner have arranged to take some time out of the office, you don’t want to waste it by doing chores while your children sit in front of the TV all day. Family fun, not family friction should be the order of the day. Spending time with your children is also an important aspect of childhood development and happiness.

There are plenty of things to do with children in the local area, whether you’re feeling flush, looking for cheap days out or - even better - a free family tourist attraction. We are lucky to have many fantastic places to visit on our doorstep and the coast is only an hour away. Taking your kids on an educational day out can give them and you some of the best fun there is. Choose wisely and they won’t even realise they’re learning whilst playing. There are lots of child-friendly, interactive museums and historical venues around designed to excite and engage your family. Toddlers and young children understand the world around them by touching, so make sure you’re going to a place where you won’t have to constantly say ‘no – don’t touch. Farms and zoos are a great way to engage kids of all ages and again you can make the trip educational for them. Why not make a list of which animals you definitely want to see. Then once you get there, see who the first person is to spot their favourite animal. It’s always good to make a game out of the experience. It’s important to make your children aware of what to expect from the animals. Kids have to approach animals carefully and understand animals can get upset if they’re not nice. Some animals may want to rest or to hide. Get as much information as you can before you go about the animals you are going to see. A day at the seaside is the ultimate summer day out and also free. There are loads of things you can do as a family. Why not play games like “Let’s Bury Dad”, Build a line of sandcastles, then see who can squash them the fastest, Make sand angels by lying in the sand and waving your arms backwards and forwards or dig a shallow water pool for perfect splashing.”
*Bring an emergency snack and drink for the kids. And possibly even yourself! *Don’t forget your road map, even the best navigators take a wrong turn sometimes! Whatever you do or wherever you go this Summer Holiday, make sure that it is fun and enjoyable for you all. This way you will have a fantastic and memorable family day
Whatever you decide to do, here is a checklist of things you may need to remember to make the day run as smoothly as possible: *If you’re headed for an outdoor attraction, don’t forget to leave your wellies, raincoats and brolly in the back of the car (just in case). You never can tell with the British weather! Or alternatively make sure you include some sunscreen, hats and sunglasses if the weather is behaving. *It’s handy to pack up a change of clothes for the kids (little accidents happen when you least expect them) and a packet of wet wipes can be a godsend!

Monstrous Maud: Horror Holiday Author: A. B. Saddlewick Illustrator: Sarah Horne Ages: 5+
Fans of Horrid Henry will love these frighteningly good books, perfect for engaging young readers. Horror Holdiay is the fifth book in this scarily sensational Monstrous Maud series. Maud Montague is so excited about going on holiday with her friend Wilf the werewolf and his family. But a dangerous monster lurks in the forest of the campsite. Can Maud and Wilf solve the mystery of the Beast of Oddington?
Dragonsitter Takes Off Author: Josh Lacey Ages: 7+
The Accidental Time Traveller Author: Janis Mackay Ages: 9+
Dragon Lords Rising Author: Lucinda Hare Ages: 11+
Shortlisted for the Roald Dahl Funny Prize, the first book about Eddie and Ziggy, a very unusual dragon, is now followed by a sequel. Eddie had thought that looking after a dragon would be easy but how wrong he is! How Eddie manages his wayward dragon and deals with the fire breathing friend who comes to visit her is a brilliant follow up for all of Eddie and Ziggy’s fans.
Agatha Black has somehow timetravelled from 1812 to 2012 and Saul and his friends need to find a way to return her home. Filled with funny misunderstandings due to Agatha’s confusions and wonder at the modern world. A cleverly written novel which will appeal to boys and girls
Spread your wings and hang on tightly as mighty Stormcracker takes you on a roller-coaster ride across the Old Wall and into the frozen north where you can slide down the ice flumes to the subterranean world of the Ice Bear Clan, land on an iceberg, or explore the mysteries of the long abandoned sea citadel. If you like magic there is lethal maelstrom magic conjured up from the Abyss, or Quenelda’s often hilarious and always hazardous hit and miss efforts as she attempts to master the strongest dragon magic of all: that which flows through her very own veins.

CHOOSING A NURSERY Nearly one million children are looked after in day in the UK and this number continues to rise so you’re not on your own when it comes to choosing the right nursery & pre-school for your child. Where to start? It can be very overwhelming and mind boggling so don’t panic, to start with you can obtain a list of nurseries and pre-schools from your local Children’s Information Services, you can then start your research! Its very important to book a visit to the nursery’s or preschools that you are considering as you will be able to meet the staff and see how happy the children are. Some things you may wish to consider and check; Most nurseries are open from 8am until 6pm but you should enquire as to provisions for earlier drop off and later pick up if required and what are the additional costs for this service, if any? Does your employer participate in a Child Care Voucher Scheme and does your chosen nursery accept the vouchers. This is a great way to save money!! Is the nursery registered with OFSTED and ask to see the latest OFSTED report? If you work outside of your local area, would it be beneficial to have the nursery close to home or close to work?
Think of drop off’s and pick up’s and how this fits with your daily routine Does the nursery provide all meals, if so what is it and where is it cooked? What is the daily routine? Including snack times, meal times, free play and activities For babies, do you need to provide formula and nappies? Where do babies sleep during the day and if your toddler is still having a daytime nap where will they be able to sleep? Is there an outside play area so that children can spread their wings and enjoy the fresh air? Is the nursery entrance secure? Is there a settling in period? Will your child have a key worker? Once you’ve found the nursery or pre-school that you and your little one are happy with you can then start to relax and look forward to watching your child flourish & grow amongst other children of the same age.....and more importantly you can start to get some sleep at night instead of worrying!

PETS R E N COR Holiday pet care
In the excitement of preparing for a holiday or weekend away, don’t forget to make arrangements for your pets. There are a number of options to ensure your pet is cared for when you are away. You can: Ask friends and family to look after them Have a pet-sitter Take them to a boarding establishment. If you plan to take them with you on holiday Always make sure that your chosen holiday destination has all the facilities necessary for your pet’s requirements. Check with your vet that your pet is healthy and safe to travel. If your pet requires medication make sure you take this with you. Always make sure that your pet is fully vaccinated, and has had up-to-date flea and worming treatments. Make sure your pet wears a collar with an identity tag with your name and holiday address and contact details on, so if they get lost you can be reunited as quickly as possible.
Top tips for caring for animals in summer Never leave animals in a car during warm weather. Don’t let your pet get sunburnt. Make sure that all pets have access to shade and a constant supply of fresh drinking water.
Check your pets for fleas, ticks and mites. Don’t over-exercise dogs in the heat. Keep indoor fish tanks out of direct sunlight and top up the water levels of ponds. Don’t leave pets alone at home when you go away on holiday. Be wildlife-friendly in the garden - take care when using a lawn-mower or strimmer and keep toxic pesticides out of the reach of animals. Pet owners need to avoid leaving animals in cars, conservatories, outbuildings or caravans during warm weather, as temperatures can quickly rise to 47°C (117°F) and this may result in death. Remember: Under the Animal Welfare Act pet owners have a legal duty to care for their animals, which includes preventing suffering. Penalties are a fine of up to £20,000 and/or up to six months in prison.
