PROGRAMMED TO LEARN There were two new pupils at Chew Stoke Church School last week, when the children were joined by 2 amazing robots. The NAO (pronounced “NOW”) robots, from Active Robots, based in Chilcompton, entertained and amazed the children in their school assembly by moving, talking, dancing and telling stories. Children from years 4,5 & 6 were then able to take part in programming workshops, where they were able to programme the robots themselves. The aim of the learning programme is to encourage more young people to become interested in technology and engineering, by providing them with hands on experience of robotics. The robots, which have recently featured on the Graham Norton Show, greatly inspired the children with their humanlike movement and their ability to interact. We know what will be on their Christmas wish list next year! Pictured: Pupils from Year 4,Woodpecker Class, with the NAO robots and Joanne Dawe-Lane from Active Robots.

Well done to all of the team at Welton Primary School.

MIDSOMER NORTON BEAVERS’ FUN IN THE PARK

1st Midsomer Norton’s Calgary Colony enjoyed the early spring weather with a trip to Radstock Park in search of the first signs of spring. Twentyfour Beavers and four leaders hunted for minibeasts, daffodils and spiders along the cycle path. Later in the evening, Ciarcan, Brandon, Ellie and Freddie, four new Beavers, and three new leaders Rebecca Mears, Claire Jay and Alex Arthur, were invested into the Colony in the park. It got dark very quickly, but with lots of exciting activities planned for the spring term including a sleepover and the district jamboree ‘WanJam’, there is plenty more fun ahead for this Beaver Colony. Midsomer Norton Scout Group have been busy in the last couple of weeks collecting items from the local area for their Spring Jumble Sale and would like to thank everyone who donated items and came along to the sale. If you would like further details about the Group or any forthcoming events, please review our website www.nortonscouts.net or contact Clare Spearman, Group Scout Leader, gsl@nortonscouts.net

SKIPPING TO PROVIDE HAPPINESS

WHAT’S GOING ON EAR?

“Well Done Chew Stoke Church School” said a delighted Sophie Richards, Bristol Co-ordinator for The NSPCC, on hearing the school children had raised a massive £2000 for the Charity. All 187 of the children skipped continuously for 30 minutes to earn sponsorship for a very worthy cause. “The Children have really taken the Charity to their hearts,” added Sophie, who presented the children with Bronze, Silver and Gold badges to reward them for their efforts. The money raised will go towards funding Childline and other vital services for children. Pictured: Sophie Richards, NSPCC Co-ordinator and Children from Chew Stoke Church School.

No it wasn’t an April Fool’s Joke and yes they are all really wearing bunny ears! The children of Chew Stoke Church School (and staff!) all donned fluffy, Easter Bunny Ears for their annual Easter Craft Day and Easter Eggs-hibition! The ears which were paid for from profit raised from the childrens tuck shop, were a surprise to make their day go with a smile. The children, with help from staff and parents spent the day producing amazing Easter Crafts, including cards, decorated eggs, Easter gardens and baskets. These were then displayed in the School for parents, grandparents and local residents to view. A truly eggs-citing day was had by all, one that they won’t stop “rabbiting” on about for a long time to come!

Keep your family safe with a smoke alarm By Avon Fire & Rescue Service Working smoke alarms are one of the best ways of keeping your little ones safe if a fire breaks out in the home. And although more households than ever own smoke alarms, most of us aren’t brilliant at checking they are working. That’s why Avon Fire & Rescue Service is encouraging parents in particular to take a couple of seconds to test their alarms. James Bladon from Avon Fire & Rescue Service said: “We know that smoke alarms can be frustrating

if they go off when you burn the toast and it may be tempting to remove the batteries. “If that’s a familiar story please make today the day you replace them or fit a new alarm. A little inconvenience is a price worth paying if it means your family escapes from a fire. The risk of dying in a house fire increases by four times if smoke alarms aren’t working, so a 10 second chore is a tiny price to pay. “If you would like more advice we will be happy to come to your home to provide information and fit free smoke alarms.” For more information visit www.avonfire.gov.uk where you will also find details of the Home Fire Safety Visit service. Firefighters will visit your home to provide advice specific to your family’s needs and circumstances. Smoke alarms will also be fitted free of charge if required.

PARENT

PAGES Hayfever

(allergic rhinitis)

Hayfever, or seasonal allergic rhinitis, is condition in which people experience an allergic reaction to different types of pollen during the year. Hayfever is common in the UK, affecting around 1 in 5 people at some stage. Tree pollen often triggers symptoms during the spring, grass pollen is in the air in late spring and summer and pollen from weeds is around from early spring into late autumn. Hayfever can also be caused by mould spores, from late March until November, usually peaking in late summer and early autumn. It is common for people to be allergic to more than one pollen. A person who has perennial rather than seasonal rhinitis experiences

allergy triggers all year round, from allergens such as house dust mites, mould, animal dander and feathers. What are the symptoms of allergic rhinitis? The body’s immune system interprets the allergen, such as pollen, mould or dander, as an invader and responds by releasing a chemical called histamine into the bloodstream. Histamine causes inflammation (swelling and redness) of the sinuses, nose and mucus membranes of the eyes, and triggers sneezing. The swelling reaction is designed to block the allergen from entering the body and sneezing is a method to expel it out of the body. Histamine also allows extra fluids to enter the nasal tissue, resulting in congestion, itching and a runny nose. People with allergic rhinitis have sudden sneezing, a watery nasal discharge, puffy eyes and fatigue. Hayfever symptoms often start during childhood or teens, but can develop at any age. How do I find out what causes my allergies? The season in which your allergy occurs will narrow the list of possible culprits. To pinpoint the cause, your doctor may arrange for you to have a skin test to determine which substances or allergens cause a reaction. The skin test involves placing extracts of potential allergens in a grid on

your arm or back, and then pricking your skin so the extract can enter the outer layer of skin or epidermis. Those areas that become red and itchy indicate which substances trigger a defensive (allergic) response by your immune system. Your doctor may recommend a blood test to check the levels of antibodies produced by the immune system. Elevated levels of certain antibodies can identify particular allergies. Why do only some people get seasonal allergies/hayfever? It is not known why some people get allergies while others do not. However, there is some evidence to suggest that hayfever and other types of allergies are hereditary (passed on from parents to children). People who suffer from asthma oreczema are also more likely to develop hayfever or perennial (year-round) allergic rhinitis. Why are my allergies better on some days and worse on others? While the pollen seasons for particular plants are very consistent within each geographical region, the weather plays a large role in determining how heavy the pollen count (and other potential allergens including mould) will be, both seasonally and daily. The severity of your allergic reaction will generally mirror the rise and fall of the specific allergen count to which you are allergic.

Detecting learning disabilities A child or person with a learning disability has a reduced intellectual ability which may cause problems with everyday activities. They may need support to help develop new skills, to understand complex information as well as interacting with other people. Around 1.5 million people in the UK have some type of learning disability. Learning disability is often confused with learning difficulty or mental healthproblems. The charity Mencap says dyslexia, for example, is a learning difficulty. Unlike a learning disability, dyslexia does not affect a person’s intellect. Mental health problems may be overcome with appropriate treatment, but that is not the case with a learning disability. People with conditions like Down’s syndrome and forms of autism can also have learning disabilities. Nearly

a third of people with epilepsy have some form of learning disability. Most people with a learning disability can lead independent lives, given the appropriate support. A learning disability may be classed as mild, moderate or severe. Mencap says a person with a mild learning disability may need support for something specific like applying for a job. However, full time care may be needed for people with a severe or profound learning disability. Causes of learning disabilities Brain development is affected in a person with a learning disability, usually before they are born, during birth or in early childhood. Causes may not be known in all cases, but include: • Mother’s illness during pregnancy • Birth problems restricting oxygen supply to the baby’s brain • Genetic abnormalities or inherited learning disability • Early childhood illness, including meningitis Diagnosing learning disabilities Some tests may be done during

pregnancy if there are concerns about a baby’s development, including amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling (CVS). A diagnosis could also be made after a baby is born, for example if there are concerns about the risk of a learning disability from a problem during birth. Specialist assessments may be carried out if a baby has developmental delays and is later than most other children reaching certain milestones. Getting a diagnosis of learning disability can be distressing, and parents may need professional and emotional support to help cope and plan ahead for the baby’s specific needs. Treating learning disability As a child with a learning disability grows up, support will be needed from a range of health professionals. Every child’s needs will be different. Living as full and independent a life as possible is the goal of this support from the family GP, specialist paediatricians, speech and language therapists, physiotherapists, educational and clinical psychologists.

The Return of Microgreens Back in the 1980s the trend for microgreens emerged as a new fine dining ingredient. Many dismissed it as a new fad, but the 21st century has seen a resurgence of interest in these tiny culinary delights. For those who don’t remember the 1980s, microgreens are the shoots of salad vegetables such as arugula, Swiss chard, lettuce, mustard and beetroot, which are picked and served just after the first leaves have developed. The average crop-time for most microgreens is 10-14 days from seeding to harvest. Praised for their freshness, they are said to contain high nutritional content, and they add flavour, texture and a great visual dynamic to dishes. Nowadays they are most commonly used to garnish salads, soups, sandwiches and plates. See our website at www.heymag.co.uk to learn how to grow your own micro greens and how to harvest them.

FAMILY FUN Turn off the TV, lock up the PlayStation and have a great time on a day out with the children. The Whitsun holidays are nearly here and it is a great time to spend some family time together and take some time out from the hustle and bustle of the normal daily routine. Whenever school holiday time comes around, are you left asking the same question? Where can I take my children to experience a great family day out? So how can you make the most of the precious time you and your children get together? If you and your partner have arranged to take some time out of the office, you don’t want to waste it by doing chores while your children sit in front of the TV all day. Family fun, not family friction should be the order of the day. Spending time with your children is also an important aspect of childhood development and happiness. There are plenty of things to do with children in the local area, whether you’re feeling flush, looking for cheap days out or - even better - a free family tourist attraction. We are lucky to have many fantastic places to visit on our doorstep and the coast is only an hour away. Taking your kids on an educational day out can give them and you some of the best fun there is. Choose wisely and they won’t even realise they’re learning whilst playing. There are lots of child-friendly, interactive museums and historical venues around designed to excite and engage your family. Toddlers and young children understand the world around them by touching, so make 93x136 What's On Somerset BW:Layout 1 08/02/2014 10:48 Page 1

sure you’re going to a place where you won’t have to constantly say ‘no – don’t touch. Farms and zoos are a great way to engage kids of all ages and again you can make the trip educational for them. Why not make a list of which animals you definitely want to see. Then once you get there, see who the first person is to spot their favourite animal. It’s always good to make a game out of the experience. Another good game is getting your children to do impressions of each animal. It’s important to make your children aware of what to expect from the animals. Kids have to approach animals carefully and understand animals can get upset if they’re not nice. Some animals may want to rest or to hide. Get as much information as you can before you go about the animals you are going to see. A day at the seaside is the ultimate summer day out and also free. There are loads of things you can do as a family. Why not play games like “Let’s Bury Dad”, Build a line of sandcastles, then see who can squash them the fastest, Make sand angels by lying in the sand and waving your arms backwards and forwards or dig a shallow water pool for perfect splashing.” Here is a checklist of things you may need to remember to make the day run as smoothly as possible: • If you’re headed for an outdoor attraction, don’t forget to bring wellies, raincoats, a brolly, sunscreen, hats and sunglasses - because you never know what the weather will do! • It’s handy to pack up a change of clothes for the kids and a packet of wet wipes can be a godsend! • Bring an emergency snack and drinks • Don’t forget your road map Whatever you do or wherever you go this Summer Holiday, have fun!

CAR GAMES

In the privacy of your own car, you can laugh as loud as you want or shout out the answers to questions. So don’t hold back when you play these games — laugh, yell, or sing your hearts out.

EATING AN ALPHABET

Let your half-starved brood describe how hungry they are in this game, best played about half an hour before you make a pit stop for food. This version of the “I’m Packing for a Picnic” game begins when you announce “I’m so hungry I could eat an aviator” (“alligator,” or “apple”). The next player adds on with a B word. She might say, “I’m so hungry I could eat an aviator and a bunny rabbit” (“belly button,” or “bologna slice”). See if you can keep it up until your family is eating zoos, zippers, or zigzags.

I SPY

Someone says, “I spy with my little eye something green.” Whoever guesses the item correctly goes next. You could limit the items to what’s in the area. Or you could get tricky and play I Spied, selecting items that you’ve already passed.

GUESS MOBILE

Name a guess master - the person who poses a guessing challenge. He or she could ask passengers to guess the colour of the next passing car, or how long before you get to the next town. Or, with three clues, what it is that someone else sees.

GUESS MY NAME

Give your child a word challenge by asking her to make as many words as she can from the letters in a phrase such as “Are we there yet?” or “When will we be at the zoo?”

In this acting game players imitate the motions, habits, and expressions of a famous person, such as an athlete, politician, musician, or actor. The clincher: No talking allowed! Players can ask Yes or No questions (which are met by a nod or a shake). The correct guesser does the next impression.

THE HOUSE ON THE HILL

GEOGRAPHY

WORD STRETCH

Invent stories about people in the houses you are driving by. What do you think they do for work? What’s their favourite food? Where do they go on holiday? Get into lots of details, such as whether they snore loudly or are afraid of spiders. Give them names, hobbies, pets, and so on.

Start with A to Z anyplace in the world: Kansas, say. The next person has to think of a place that begins with the last letter of Kansas, such as South Africa. Whoever goes next needs a place that starts with A. It has to be a real place - and no using a map!

Make sure your child is safe... Join us for FREE car seat checking clinics: Wednesday 21st May – Radstock Police Station Thursday 19th June – Argos Car Park, Midsomer Norton Tuesday 19th August – KRFC, Keynsham

WELCOME TO IBRITISH MUD WEEK JUNE 23RD TO 29TH 2014 British Mud Week is a celebration of all things muddy. Whether it’s work or play we love getting our hands dirty. From the 23rd to the 29th June we want you to get involved and make the most of the great British outdoors by grabbing a buddy and getting muddy. How you get involved is completely up to you, we just want you to spend a day in the dirt. Here are a few ideas to get you started: 1. MUD RUN If you’re a particularly tough mud enthusiast you could take part in a gruelling obstacle course that you can create in the fields near your home. 2. WELLIES TO SCHOOL Get your class involved with ‘Wellies to school’. Have everyone come into school wearing their Wellington boots and collect donations for a charity of your choice. 3. THE GREAT BRITISH MUD BAKE-OFF Spend a day baking Mississippi mud pie inspired treats and then host your own mud tuck shop. 4. CHARITY CAR WASH Everybody’s car gets muddy and not everyone has time to clean it.

Catherine McKeever Tuition

Primary teacher with 20 years experience and excellent references offering one to one tutoring for children aged 5 to 12 in a structured, nurturing and supportive environment.

Programmes are available to: consolidate term time learning meet specific learning needs and build confidence provide catch-up during school holidays preparation for Common Entrance 01761 471690 / 07849 836415 catherine.mckeever@homecall.co.uk Based in Timsbury

But a car wash can actually be a lot of fun, so get a group together and get scrubbing. 5. MUD MAKE-UP Treat yourself to a mud facial mask. Mud masks detox the skin, help clean out pours and make skin look healthier. 6. MUD WALK Go with a friend, with your family or with your pets and take a walk through your local park, woods or fields. 7. MUD TREASURE HUNT Take some treasure and bury it in the ground. Draw a treasure map, give it to your children or a friend and get them to dig in the dirt until they find it. 8. MUD SCULPTURES With the right amount of water mud can be moulded into shape and used to create mud sculptures. With a little imagination who knows what you could end up making. 9. MUD PAINTING Mud has many uses, but one thing you might not have known it be used for is painting. Make mud paintings at home. 10. DIG FOR WORMS Digging for worms might sound a little strange but you’ll be surprised at how fascinated children can be by the wriggly little creatures. Get digging and see who can collect the most. Schools can take part in a number of ways from baking mud pies to letting children come to school in their wellies for a day. The week coincides with Glastonbury Music Festival, notorious for being the muddiest festival in the world, and the Oblivion Mud Runner event in Herefordshire, a six mile long endurance mud race.

Have fun in the mud!

5 REASONS WHY A BIRD MIGHT (OR MIGHT NOT) BE A GOOD CHOICE FOR A PET 1 Birds are easier to care for than other pets. Unlike the family dog or

cat that has the run of the house, a bird can be popped into its cage while you’re away during the day or busy around the house. Cleaning a cage each day is more appealing to many people than scooping litter. But keep in mind…Many birds are extremely vocal and noisy, so even if yours is hanging out in his cage on the other side of the house, chances are he’ll be hard to ignore. 2 Birds are easy to train. Birds love to learn and love attention from their humans, so training them is often a breeze and just plain fun. And let’s face it – a bird is a whole lot easier to manage for training purposes than a large dog. But keep in mind…Depending on the bird, she is apt to learn things you didn’t plan for her to. Certain types of birds, parrots for example, pick up words, phrases and sounds they hear around the house. 3 Birds are very social. Many birds have the capacity to bond just as closely with their humans as dogs and cats. And in fact, birds are much more socially inclined than kitties. But keep in mind…Again, this can be a double-edged sword if you’re not prepared to spend significant time interacting with, training and socializing your bird. Many exotics do best treated as members of the family in the fullest sense – allowed outside their cages for several hours each day, and included in most at-home family activities 4 Birds are inexpensive to feed. The smaller the pet, the less the pet eats. Certainly keeping your bird fed is less costly than feeding a dog or most cats. Generally speaking, it’s best to feed a high-quality diet of species-specific commercial pelleted food (not seed mix), fruits, veggies, and sprouted grains. But keep in mind…Overall, you shouldn’t think cheap-to-keep when it comes to a bird as a pet. Owners of large exotic birds spend around £50 a month for food, toys and other supplies.

5 Birds are attractive and interesting to have around. Many birds have feather coats that

are incredibly beautiful and vibrantly coloured – it is a joy every time you look at them. Bird behavior is also fun and interesting to observe, and can even lower your stress level. But keep in mind…Birds should never be considered as pretty cage ornaments or part of a home’s decor. Pet birds are not the feathered equivalent of brightly coloured aquarium fish. They are every bit as high maintenance as other more common types of pets, and indeed require a great deal more time and attention than many other companion animals.
