Coxley’s fair weather Fayre Pupils, staff and visitors enjoyed the many stalls and amusements on offer at Coxley Primary School on Sunday 19th May. The May Fayre was the culmination of hard work by children and Friends of Coxley School, with help on the day from staff as well. “At a time of uncertain weather” said Head Teacher Jane Hesketh-Williams “we were very lucky that the afternoon turned out dry and we could appreciate all the hard work that went into the organisation.”

Art week
Blackbeard visit
The children at Ditcheat Primary School had a very busy week that included filming, drama, sewing, singing, hand bell ringing, wire sculpture and lots of lovely artwork. To finish off the week they laid out lots of different art materials for the whole school in the hall, they were able to come in and use whatever they wished. They were all eager and enjoyed the freedom to choose what they wanted to do. The end of a very exciting week and many fantastic creations.
The children at Shepton Mallet Infants School have been studying Pirates as part of their learning this term. They all had a wonderful day when Blackbeard visited the school and help them all with their work!
Children’s First Aid Mr Gavin Churchill and Mrs Dawn Gould from The British Red Cross came to visit the children at Evercreech Primary School to carry out basic first aid training for the children. It was a fun and an interesting day was had by all. A big thank you goes to Mr Churchill and Mrs Gould for their hard work throughout the day.

Successful summer fayre What a fantastic day was had by all who attended the Summer Fayre at Evercreech Primary School. The sun shone beautifully for us. There were lots to enjoy such as Inflatable Slides, Tombola, Raffle, Country Dancing, a Gymnastics Display, Talent Show and Strawberries and Cream. Thank you to the W.I. for providing refreshments and lots of homemade cakes. Congratulations to the APT for another successful event and thank you to all the volunteers who helped run stalls. A total profit of £1603.00 was raised on the day. Brilliant!
Art gallery at Ditcheat School The school hall was temporarily turned into an art gallery after we sent many of our paintings to be framed. We created a gallery of displays of current and previous term’s art work for parents and the local community to come along and enjoy. FODs kindly provided refreshments which we all appreciated. A big thank you to local primaries who kindly lent us the display boards. It was wonderful to see so many people come to the exhibition and for the children to have their hard work valued.
Coxley’s Butterflies to decorate the Flower Festival Year 5 and 6 pupils at Coxley Primary School put their craft skills to good use when they constructed giant butterflies which formed part of the displays in the Bishop’s Palace gardens at the Flower Festival, sponsored by Waitrose, from 25th to 29th June to celebrate the Society’s 60th anniversary. Non Hobson and her fellow members of The Wells and District Floral Art Society, Jenny Jones and Margo Hall, spent the afternoon with the children to make the colourful models and invited them to bring their family and friends to see the floral displays and decorated gardens.

Rugby summer camps Whilst most of the country will be making the most of the last couple of weeks of the summer holidays, and the Bath Rugby squad are well into the swing of pre-season training, spare a thought for the hard-working Bath Rugby Community team, who will be hosting a range of Summer Camps. Starting with a two day Minis camp (7-12 years) at Castle Cary RFC on Wednesday 14th and Thursday 15th August, and finishing at the Recreation Ground with a two day Youth camp (13-16 years) on Thursday 29th and Friday 30th August, the camps are open to both boys and girls and split into age groups, so your rugby mad youngster is bound to find something to suit them! The Summer Camps are an ideal chance for children interested in rugby to learn a bit more about the game, brush up on their skills before the new season starts, and have fun whilst they are at it! Each camp has a built-in visit from some of the players, along with a complimentary ticket for Bath’s pre-season game at the Recreation Ground against the Ospreys on Friday 30th August. “Every year Bath Rugby’s Community Team deliver skills coaching at our Summer Camps at a level suitable for all players to return to their schools and clubs prepared for the new season,” said Bath Rugby’s Community Rugby Manager, Steve Middleton, adding, “This year, for the youth groups we will be providing an insight into the use of video analysis, using Premiership footage. All the camps will remain safe and fun, whilst bringing out the best in the camp participants.”
We have the following camps on offer this summer: • Two days Mini Camp at Castle Cary RFC for 7-12 years (Weds 14th and Thurs 15th August) • One day Youth Clinic at castle Cary RFC for 13-16 years (Friday 16th August) • Three days Mini Camp at the Bath Rec Tues for 7-12 years (Tues 27th, Weds 28th and Thurs 29th August) • Two days Youth Camp at the Bath Rec for 13-16 years (Thurs 29th and Fri 30th August) For more information and to reserve your place visit www.rugbycamps.co.uk.

The Mad Hatters Tea Party The children in Cherry class (Reception and Year 1) at Ditcheat Primary School finished their topic work on Alice in Wonderland this term by hosting a Mad Hatter’s tea party for their families. They made hats, and prepared the cakes and decorations themselves, making sure there were jam tarts for everyone! The children carried out Wonderland challenges including painting roses red and spotting the Cheshire cat’s grin. The families who attend the Toddler group held at the school were also invited and it was great to see children aged 6 months to 6 years enjoying all the fun!
Houses of Parliament “Year Six pupils and the School Forum Committee from Meare Village Primary School have enjoyed a visit to The Houses of Parliament. During their visit they had a full tour of Westminster and spent some time with local MP Tessa Munt. Headteacher, ‘The children thoroughly enjoyed the day and had the opportunity to ask Tessa some interesting questions. We feel that it is hugely important for our children to understand the process of democracy and feel some connection to Westminster and all the decisions that are made on their behalf.’ Deborah Eveleigh Headteacher
Let’s get planting! At Priddy School, the head teacher and staff have enthusiastically embraced the Forest School ethos and have made it an integral part of their curriculum, with every child entering the school now experiencing Forest School sessions in the nearby woods. This is where the children are given the time and space to make meaning of the world through experimentation and hands-on experience, allowing them to explore and learn in a constructive way. They are then able to use their imaginations to transform features of the environment and the activities lend themselves to teamwork and developing and improving social interaction. In forest school trees play a huge part as they are fantastic multi-taskers. They keep the air we breathe clean, water pure and soils healthy and in Forest School they also provide us with shelter and shade, firewood to burn and timber to work. Trees also enhance our lives and often provide inspiration to some of what takes place in the classroom. Therefore, to help with the re-generation of the wood, in Forest School the children have been busy planting trees, kindly donated to them by the Woodland Trust. Every child in the school planted a tree, which ranged from Silver Birch to Oak, Hazel to Rowan and it is hoped that this will also help the magical, mystical quality of the wood to continue for future generations of children. The children are very proud of what they achieved and are very grateful to the Woodland Trust for their very kind and generous donation. Forest School is now so well established that it will hopefully always be a part of what goes on at Priddy and the children hope that these the newly added saplings will continue to grow from strength to strength... just like their Forest School!

HOLID Holiday play schemes can be run by the local council or privately, for the whole holiday, a week at a time or just a few days. Some play schemes concentrate on a particular sport or interest, e.g. football or drama, while others are a mixture of activities and even outings. They can be a life-saver if you work, but even if you’re at home too they can offer a break within the school holidays for your children - and you! Your child will have the opportunity to meet and form new friendships with similar aged local children. Holiday play schemes can be a great way for children to discover new interests and explore new activities and can be an energyburner. You can pre-book for the days that suit you, from just one or two days to whole weeks.
DAY CLUBS Popular holiday schemes are booked up very early so you need to be quick off the mark and please do check with the scheme that it will be suitable for your child. Many of these schemes also run after school and weekend activities during term time and the Summer holidays are a great time to enrol your child into a club ready for September and the beginning of the new school year.
Enrol now for the new Sept Term
Many sports clubs will be enrolling new students for September, so if your children would like to start a new activity, now is the perfect time to arrange this.

ARTS & CRAFTS TREASURE CHESTS
DECORATE YOUR SHOES
Here is a simple way for children to store their collections. Make an accordion fold in a strip of paper and glue the ďŹ rst and last pages to the inside of a boxes lid and bottom. Keep some pages empty so that the collection can grow.
Why not create your own fashion design on your shoes. Using fabric pens and fabric paint you can be the talk of the town with your funky shoes.

OUT AND
ABOUT
Turn off the tv, lock up the PlayStation and have a great day out with the children. The Summer holidays are nearly here and it is a great time to spend some family time together and take some time out from the hustle and bustle of the normal daily routine. Whenever school holiday time comes around, are you left asking the same question? Where can I take my children to experience a great family day out? So how can you make the most of the precious time you and your children get together? If you and your partner have arranged to take some time out of the office, you don’t want to waste it by doing chores while your children sit in front of the TV all day. Family fun, not family friction should be the order of the day. Spending time with your children is also an important aspect of childhood development and happiness.

There are plenty of things to do with children in the local area, whether you’re feeling flush, looking for cheap days out or - even better - a free family tourist attraction. We are lucky to have many fantastic places to visit on our doorstep and the coast is only an hour away. Taking your kids on an educational day out can give them and you some of the best fun there is. Choose wisely and they won’t even realise they’re learning whilst playing. There are lots of child-friendly, interactive museums and historical venues around designed to excite and engage your family. Toddlers and young children understand the world around them by touching, so make sure you’re going to a place where you won’t have to constantly say ‘no – don’t touch. Farms and zoos are a great way to engage kids of all ages and again you can make the trip educational for them. Why not make a list of which animals you definitely want to see. Then once you get there, see who the first person is to spot their favourite animal. It’s always good to make a game out of the experience. Another good game is getting your children to do impressions of each animal.

It’s important to make your children aware of what to expect from the animals. Kids have to approach animals carefully and understand animals can get upset if they’re not nice. Some animals may want to rest or to hide. Get as much information as you can before you go about the animals you are going to see. A day at the seaside is the ultimate summer day out and also free. There are loads of things you can do as a family. Why not play games like “Let’s Bury Dad”, Build a line of sandcastles, then see who can squash them the fastest, Make sand angels by lying in the sand and waving your arms backwards and forwards or dig a shallow water pool for perfect splashing.”
*Bring an emergency snack and drink for the kids. And possibly even yourself! *Don’t forget your road map, even the best navigators take a wrong turn sometimes! Whatever you do or wherever you go this Summer Holiday, make sure that it is fun and enjoyable for you all. This way you will have a fantastic and memorable family day
Whatever you decide to do, here is a checklist of things you may need to remember to make the day run as smoothly as possible: *If you’re headed for an outdoor attraction, don’t forget to leave your wellies, raincoats and brolly in the back of the car (just in case). You never can tell with the British weather! Or alternatively make sure you include some sunscreen, hats and sunglasses if the weather is behaving. *It’s handy to pack up a change of clothes for the kids (little accidents happen when you least expect them) and a packet of wet wipes can be a godsend!

CHOOSING A NURSERY Nearly one million children are looked after in day in the UK and this number continues to rise so you’re not on your own when it comes to choosing the right nursery & pre-school for your child. Where to start? It can be very overwhelming and mind boggling so don’t panic, to start with you can obtain a list of nurseries and pre-schools from your local Children’s Information Services, you can then start your research! Its very important to book a visit to the nursery’s or preschools that you are considering as you will be able to meet the staff and see how happy the children are. Some things you may wish to consider and check; Most nurseries are open from 8am until 6pm but you should enquire as to provisions for earlier drop off and later pick up if required and what are the additional costs for this service, if any? Does your employer participate in a Child Care Voucher Scheme and does your chosen nursery accept the vouchers. This is a great way to save money!! Is the nursery registered with OFSTED and ask to see the latest OFSTED report? If you work outside of your local area, would it be beneficial to have the nursery close to home or close to work?
Think of drop off’s and pick up’s and how this fits with your daily routine Does the nursery provide all meals, if so what is it and where is it cooked? What is the daily routine? Including snack times, meal times, free play and activities For babies, do you need to provide formula and nappies? Where do babies sleep during the day and if your toddler is still having a daytime nap where will they be able to sleep? Is there an outside play area so that children can spread their wings and enjoy the fresh air? Is the nursery entrance secure? Is there a settling in period? Will your child have a key worker? Once you’ve found the nursery or pre-school that you and your little one are happy with you can then start to relax and look forward to watching your child flourish & grow amongst other children of the same age.....and more importantly you can start to get some sleep at night instead of worrying!

In order to make sure you too can enjoy a full and fun day with your kids on a day trip to the English coast:
Set off early and plan parking in advance At the merest hint of sun - the whole of the UK heads to the beach. In order to beat the rush, try and get out well before 9am if you can. Once you are there, you need to know where to park, so look up the parking options for the resort of your choice before you get there, otherwise you could get lost in the one way traffic system for a town you don’t know your way around. Invest in wetsuits for the children
There is no getting away from the fact that the UK coastline is not the Caribbean and the waters are just a tad nippy. If the kids have a nice, warm wetsuit, they are much less likely to start complaining that its far too cold and they want to go home now.
Take a windbreak because not only is it cold sometimes, it can get a little windy. To stop your child from being buffeted relentlessly by the wind, get yourself a tent, or a few wind breaks. Kids actually rather like the little “dens” these make on the beach. Something else for them to play with while you are there!
22
Pack plenty of toys
Buckets, and spades are a must. But don’t forget to bring some of the other wonderful outdoor toys as well, such as a cricket set, a football, a Frisbee, swingball...the list is endless. Your kids will be much better occupied then, and you may even get in a sneaky book while they are playing!
Bring at least one change of clothes
as no matter how much you plan; kids, and water sometimes just don’t mix well. If you have a change of clothes, then whatever happens, you will be prepared for it! Know your toilet locations! The earlier you get to the beach, the easier it is to pick a spot near to the loo so it’s not hard to get to, but far enough away that you don’t feel you are actually spending the day there and not at the seaside! As a parent, you accept you will need to visit the toilet a fair bit during the day, but it’s more relaxing if it’s not a mad panic trying to find it when you do need it.
Don’t forget to bring food for the end of the day. There is nothing better than Fish & Chips at the English seaside, but if you want to make the most of the day, take plenty of snacks, and even a picnic for teatime at the end of the day. That way you can leave quite late for home without having to worry about stopping off for some food on the way back.

PETS R E N COR Holiday pet care
In the excitement of preparing for a holiday or weekend away, don’t forget to make arrangements for your pets. There are a number of options to ensure your pet is cared for when you are away. You can: Ask friends and family to look after them Have a pet-sitter Take them to a boarding establishment. If you plan to take them with you on holiday Always make sure that your chosen holiday destination has all the facilities necessary for your pet’s requirements. Check with your vet that your pet is healthy and safe to travel. If your pet requires medication make sure you take this with you. Always make sure that your pet is fully vaccinated, and has had up-to-date flea and worming treatments. Make sure your pet wears a collar with an identity tag with your name and holiday address and contact details on, so if they get lost you can be reunited as quickly as possible.
Top tips for caring for animals in summer Never leave animals in a car during warm weather. Don’t let your pet get sunburnt. Make sure that all pets have access to shade and a constant supply of fresh drinking water.
Check your pets for fleas, ticks and mites. Don’t over-exercise dogs in the heat. Keep indoor fish tanks out of direct sunlight and top up the water levels of ponds. Don’t leave pets alone at home when you go away on holiday. Be wildlife-friendly in the garden - take care when using a lawn-mower or strimmer and keep toxic pesticides out of the reach of animals. Pet owners need to avoid leaving animals in cars, conservatories, outbuildings or caravans during warm weather, as temperatures can quickly rise to 47°C (117°F) and this may result in death. Remember: Under the Animal Welfare Act pet owners have a legal duty to care for their animals, which includes preventing suffering. Penalties are a fine of up to £20,000 and/or up to six months in prison.
