1994 Commonwealth triple jump gold medal winner, Julian Golley, came to visit Evercreech Primary School to meet every pupil and tell them about his life as an elite athlete. The children were given a sponsor form and envelope and we encouraged every pupil to seek sponsors from friends and family. On the day every child had their individual photograph taken with Julian. They participated in various activities including sit ups, press ups, squat thrusts and star jumps for 30 seconds respectively. During a whole school assembly the children learnt about Julian’s life as an athlete and his competition experience. They will share the total money raised with Superschools. The Superschools organisation raises money to fund the training of young athletes. This was a wonderful opportunity for the children to meet a top athlete and continue the Olympic legacy.

Maasai Warrior Butleigh School celebrated Harvest with a difference in October when they had a performance from a Maasai Warrior group who have been touring different schools around the country. As well as learning about the Maasai tribe and their culture, pupils had the opportunity to sing and dance along with the Maasai. They particularly liked trying to jump as high as a Maasai warrior. Celebrations continued through the week, pupils made vegetable soup and ate African goat stew for their whole school harvest lunch followed by bananas and custard. The week ended with a Harvest service in which each class performed a traditional African story. All monies raised during the week have been given to a local charity ‘St Peter’s lifeline’. The charity supports St Peter’s school in Kenya. The school aims to raise £150.00 so that they can support a child’s education at the school for a year.
‘Reading Stars’ raise money for more books A group of enthusiastic Year 6 children from Ashcott Primary School have proved to be true ‘Reading Stars’ this week! The children helped to organise the school’s book fair which raised an impressive £630 commission to spend on new books for the school library! The Reading Stars regularly organise activities at the school promoting reading as well as supporting younger children with their reading each week. Their role is to champion reading throughout the school and share their enthusiasm for books – clearly they have been successful as the school’s book fair sold the highest number of books they have sold for several years! The children can be seen here with a selection of some of the books they have chosen to purchase for the school library with the commission the children raised.
Autumn art using natural media The children at Coxley Primary School discussed some work by artist Andy Goldsworthy - famous for his natural sculptures. They then began creating their own pieces of art work using some of his images as inspiration and materials they found in the school grounds. Teamwork has been a key theme in recent learning strategies and it played a big part in the children’s achievement. Video and more photos showing the extent of the whole sculpture can be seen on the junior class pages of the website – www.coxleyschool. co.uk

This funkiest of stage schools offers an exciting mix of acting, singing, street dance and musical theatre to boys and girls aged 4-18. From Razz Minis exploring the magical world of performing arts to Razz Seniorz offering Arts Award and audition practice, all our Razzamataz classes will give a real boost to your child’s confidence, while they improve their health and fitness and make new friends. Roald Dahl at Ditcheat
The children at Ditcheat Primary School have focussed on Roald Dahl this term and as part of this the children and staff dressed up as their favourite character from a Roald Dahl book. They have also taken part in performances and workshops, cooking using recipes from Roald Dahl’s ‘Revolting Recipes’. The younger children visited Shepton Library and they finished the week with a sleepover in the school where they were read bed time stories and had a wonderful time.
New Adventure Play Equipment
The children at Ashcott Primary School are very excited to be able to play on their new ‘Trim Trail’ which has recently been installed on the school field. There are 8 pieces of play equipment forming a trail around the outside of the school field, helping to bring break times to life and keep the children fit at the same time. Last year the children were asked to come up with ideas for making break times more fun and the idea of a trim trail was put forward to the school council who then formally proposed the idea to the headteacher. The plan was well supported by the community and thanks to the Supporters of Ashcott Primary (SOAP) and a charitable donation from a local source; the idea was brought to life this year. A great example of pupil power in action!
“We were particularly delighted to be able to share the school’s fantastic new equipment during our school’s Open Day last week, welcoming children, their parents and other visitors to the school,” said Mr Briar. “We are conscious, however that some parents weren’t able to take part and for anyone who would like to visit the school with their child, we would be very happy to welcome you to our school. Please phone the school office to arrange a visit.”

Christmas presents on a budget Christmas doesn’t have to be an expensive time of year. By setting yourself an affordable budget and sticking to it you’ll be able to start the New Year without mountains of unplanned debt. Use our tips to help you make the most of the money. Write a list - estimate the cost of each present and check that the total is within your budget. Stick to your list. Sounds simple, but it’s easy to get carried away when Christmas lights are twinkling and gifts are displayed to entice you to buy. Plan what to buy and when - some things are best paid for early to get the best deals, for example travel, and others best to leave until the last minute, such as stocking fillers. Compare prices of different retailers as well as internet and shop prices - they often differ. Price comparison websites can be useful but use more than one source to get a full range of price information. Search for discounts - you can find vouchers in magazines and voucher codes online. If there is space to enter a discount code, always search for one. Don’t be tempted - two-for-one, three-for-two, mix-and-match or other
or cancelling a gym or magazine membership which you’re not using. Try a clothes swap - instead of buying a new outfit, why not swap with friends or use an online swap agency? Sell unwanted goods - online auctions can be a good way of converting things you don’t need or use to cash (including last year’s unused Christmas presents!), but take care and use online auctions safely. enticing offers are there to tempt you. Check the original prices to make sure that they really are value for money. And only buy them if you really need them. Do you need insurance? Check your Christmas gifts are covered by your existing contents insurance policy. And think twice before buying any extended warranties - you may already be covered. And if you dare to leave your food shopping until Christmas Eve afternoon, there are bargains to be had! Cut back - see if you can find one or two areas where you can make savings, eg packed lunches for you or your children,
Think about swapping Christmas cards for online messages or e-cards. With the price of postage increasing on a regular basis, this could be a real money-saver and is also good for the environment. If you are getting benefits, did you know that you may be entitled to a Christmas bonus? And if you don’t currently get benefits, find out if you should be. See the Directgov website for more information. If you are planning to borrow to help pay for Christmas then make sure it is the best borrowing available to you. And only borrow what you can afford to pay back.
Getting to grips with eczema
Around one in five children suffers from the skin complaint and in 8 out of 10 cases, the condition occurs before they reach the age of five. Emollients - substances used for moisturising, washing and bathing that help soften and smooth the skin to keep it supple and moist - are recognised as the most important treatment for eczema.
However, the research shows that in practice, many parents are not using these treatments as effectively as they could. Almost half of mums only apply to the affected areas of their child’s skin, when medical guidance from the National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence recommends that treatments they should be applied to the whole body, even when the child’s skin appears clear. The survey also highlighted that many parents could be hampering the effect of these treatments by the way they apply them - 53 per cent rub creams and ointments into their child’s skin which can actually worsen the condition by irritating the skin. As a result of the findings, the National Eczema Society has teamed up with E45 to launch a new threestep treatment plan and online advice programme. Developed in line with NICE and NES guidance, the simple plan advises: 1: Apply emollient creams and ointments all over your child’s body
2-3 times a day 2: Use gentle strokes in the direction of the hair growth when applying emollients 3: Use soap substitutes and an emollient bath oil to cleanse your child’s skin To help parents get the most from the plan, E45 has also launched a free support programme at www.eczemaadvice.co.uk The new online resource offers advice for parents as soon as their child is diagnosed with eczema and gives those struggling to manage their child’s condition the help they need to improve treatment outcomes. The programme has already seen positive results with nine out of 10 parents saying they feel more in control of their child’s eczema since signing up and 81 per cent reporting an improvement in their child’s symptoms. The website gives parents the tools they need to monitor and check their child’s eczema symptoms along with easy access to advice leaflets, educational videos and testimonials.

LET’S PARTY!
One of the joys of having children is being able to create magic and fantasy for them, and seeing the sheer delight on their faces at the sight of something special. Birthday Parties are a great chance to bring some of that magic to a child, or to a group of children, and although it can be hard work the results and memories for the child make it more than worthwhile. The range of choice for Birthday Parties these days is staggering, and like everything else, it is hard to please all the people all the time - even the little people! However, it is worth remembering that it is the children you want to impress, not their parents!

Christmas Gift It is very important we support our high street traders by doing as much of our shopping as we possibly can locally. A lot of independent local traders and their businesses are beginning to die out, resulting in a large number of high street shops gradually closing down and being left boarded-up. By shopping locally you can make a difference to the livelihood of the traders and to the landscape of your local high street or town. Shopping locally is one of the best ways to build a stronger, more prosperous community. There are many reasons to support local, independent businesses in your community, including:

The story of Santa... On the night before Christmas, all children will be tucked in their beds while “visions of presents dance in their heads.” When they awake they will check their stockings to see if Santa Claus has come. Santa Claus has become the most beloved Christmas tradition. The image of the jolly old elf flying in a sleigh pulled by reindeers and leaving toys and gifts for every child is known worldwide. The history of Santa Claus begins with a man called Saint Nicholas, the Bishop of Myra. Saint Nicholas was known for his charity and wisdom. Legends tell of him coming from a wealthy family and giving all his money to the poor. He also was said to posses magical powers. He died in 340 AD and was buried in Myra. Late in the 11th century religious soldiers from Italy took the remains of the saint back with them. They built a church in honour of him in the town of Bari, Italy. Soon Christian pilgrims from all over the world came to visit the church of Saint Nicholas. These pilgrims took the legend of Saint Nicholas back to their native lands. As the legend of Saint Nicholas spread it would take on the characteristics of each country. In Europe during the 12th century Saint Nicholas Day became a day of gift giving and charity. Germany, France and Holland celebrated December 6th as a religious day and gave gifts to their children and the poor. When the Dutch colonists traveled to America, they brought with them their Sinterklaas, an austere bishop who wore a red bishop costume and rode on a white horse. The American image of Sinterklaas would gradually evolve into that of a jolly old elf. He was first described as a plump and jolly old Dutchman. In 1823 Sinterklaas/Saint Nicholas’ metamorphosis continued with the publication of Clement Moore’s poem, A Visit from St. Nicholas (Twas the night before Christmas...). In the 1860s cartoonist Thomas Nast drew pictures of a plump and kindly Santa Claus. This image was becoming ingrained in the minds of people. As time went on this image of Santa Claus travelled across the globe.

PETS R E N COR It’s the festive season again and we’re surrounded by Christmas music wherever we go, trees and bright baubles in the shops, and everyone seems to be a bit happier than they were last week. Everyone is looking for an amazingly wonderful and unusual gift which will make their child gleefully happy and this sometimes extends to animals being given as Christmas presents. While this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it becomes a bad thing when the purchase is made on a festive whim and little to none of the proper research is done into the proper care. Here is a handy guide to helping you decide if buying a pet for Christmas is the right thing for you, your child, and the pet. The first question you should ask yourself is this: Does my child really want a new pet? Buying a pet for a family member might seem like a wonderful thing to do, but do they really want the responsibility of caring for a new pet and, in the case of children especially, you may need to take over the duty of care if they lose interest. Things to Think About 1. Who will be looking after the animal? You? Your children? Can you trust your children to be dedicated enough to care for the animal for the rest of its life? 2. Will you happily take over the care duties if your children lose interest? Can you dedicate the time to give the animal essential daily love, cuddles and attention on top of feeding and cleaning care?
3. Where will you keep the animal? Indoors our outdoors? Do you have a suitable space set up? can you keep it safe from the dogs and cats in the house? Is it going to end up unloved in a hutch at the bottom of the garden? 4. Have you budgeted for medical attention should it be needed? Can you put a little money aside each month just in case? 5. Can you afford to feed your new pet? Have you researched the appropriate diet? Do you know where you’ll be buying your feed supplies from 6. Is anyone in your household allergic to pet hairs? If so, a fluffy pet might not be such a good idea! Fish or reptiles may be more appropriate. 8. What will you do if for some reason you can’t care for your pet anymore? Do you know of any local rescue centres who may be able to help? Remember, pets are for life – not just for Christmas. Please give it a lot of consideration before you make that Christmas purchase. Pets have needs and feelings too.
