HELP SENT TO LESS FORTUNATE FAMILIES The children from Ditcheat Primary School enjoyed spending their Harvest fundraising by buying gifts from the Oxfam Unwrapped range. They raised money by auctioning the produce which parents donated and then gave each class their share to choose gifts they thought would be most useful to people in need in less fortunate countries than ours. Between all the classes they have been able to send 4 lots of chickens, 2 goats, food vouchers for two families in crisis, a mosquito net, books and other resources to enable girls to get a better education and cocoa seeds, tools and training to help somebody become a ‘chocolate farmer’.

Michael Eavis came in to Ditcheat Primary School to talk to Willow class. The children have been learning about the festival and its history and they had prepared lots of questions for their guest. Mr Eavis also had a look at work the children have completed as part of the project, some poems they had written in school and models of things you might see at the festival, which the children had made at home. Michael was really impressed with the quality of the work, and especially with the models of the pyramid stage complete with lights and music!

STORYTELLING WITH YOUR CHILD Encouraging our children to use their imagination in story telling is a great way to get them thinking on their feet and having fun. Use some of these ideas to inspire your children: • Read a fairy-tale to your child and encourage them to retell the story with their very own twists and turns, maybe a different ending or changing the characters. • This can be a continuing storytelling session in which a story is begun and then left open-ended at a crucial point. The next day the story is completed and a new one begun and left open-ended at an exciting moment. This will encourage your children to think about the next bit they can add to the story during the day. • Use a picture and encourage your child to construct a story around the picture, you can introduce more pictures to enhance the story. • Your children can collect stories about their town from older people. Encourage them to find out how the streets were named. Are there any interesting people or legends to which the street names refer? Are there any local places in town about which people tell stories? Any haunted houses? Have your child find out when the town was founded and by whom? Your children can then create a story using local history and real life facts. • Have fun with your child constructing sentence stories. You say the first sentence, your child then creates the second and you go on adding each sentence that is relevant to the previous one, to create a story. • Everything has a story! Everything comes, in its elemental origin, from the Earth. Collect an assortment of ‘things’: • Piece of Paper • Shoe • Sneaker • Match • Rubber Band • Paper Clip • Woolen Socks Imagine the life story of each of those ‘things.’ Describe their history backwards through the personal use, purchase, manufacture, to original natural resources from which it or its components were made. Personify the thing and tell its story like an autobiography. Example: 1. Tell the tale of a piece of newspaper back to the tree in the forest. 2. Tell the tale of a plastic toy’s life, tracing its history back to the oil that became plastic and then back to the prehistoric plants that created the oil.
All of these ideas will create fun and inspire storytelling!

WHAT IS PANCAKE DAY?
Pancake Day (also known as Shrove Tuesday) is the last day before the period which Christians call Lent. It is traditional to eat pancakes on this day.
WHY ARE PANCAKES EATEN ON SHROVE TUESDAY?
Lent is a time of abstinence, of giving things up. So Shrove Tuesday is the last chance to indulge yourself, and to use up the foods that aren’t allowed in Lent. Pancakes are eaten on this day because they contain fat, butter and eggs, which were forbidden during Lent.
WHEN IS SHROVE TUESDAY (PANCAKE DAY)?
Shrove Tuesday is celebrated the day before Ash Wednesday and is therefore the final day before the commencement of Lent, a
Pancake Day Tuesday 4th March
Christian festival leading up to Easter Sunday (Easter Day). Shrove Tuesday always falls 47 days before Easter Sunday, so the date varies from year to year and falls between 3 February and 9 March.
WHY DO CHRISTIANS CALL THE DAY ‘SHROVE TUESDAY’?
The name Shrove comes from the old word “shrive” which means to confess. On Shrove Tuesday, in the Middle Ages, people used to confess their sins so that they were forgiven before the season of Lent began.
WHAT IS A PANCAKE?
A pancake is a thin, flat cake, made of batter and fried in a pan. Caster sugar (superfine sugar) is sprinkled over the top and a dash of fresh lemon juice added. The pancake is then rolled. There are lots of different fillings you can choose for pancakes.

Could you be gluten sensitive?
Most of us have experienced bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhea and headaches from time to time, but if these symptoms are appearing more regularly then you could benefit from a gluten-free diet. Gluten is a protein composite found in foods processed from wheat and related grain species, including barley and rye. Most of us can digest this with no trouble but those suffering with gluten sensitivity will develop the aforementioned symptoms. This newly emerging condition may affect up to six per cent of the population and can be easily confused with other gluten related disorders. As a result gluten sensitivity can be hard to detect and diagnose and so it is vital to go to your GP for a thorough medical assessment.
Don’t let cutbacks squeeze goodness from your diet Economic pressures inevitably put a strain on family finances as household budgets bear the brunt of price increases and wage freezes. New research has revealed that one in five Brits are eating less healthily due to the rising cost of living and more than half believe their health has suffered because of the recession. Eating plenty of fruit and veg doesn’t have to be expensive - there are lots of affordable ways to get your five-a-day - and save money. Buy loose fruit and vegetables rather than pre-packed as these can be as little as half the price. Look for supermarket deals on fruit
and vegetables, such as buy one get one free offers. Buy in season - fruit and vegetables are usually cheaper. Shun supermarkets for your local greengrocer or farmers’ market where fruit and veg are usually cheaper. Replace your morning or afternoon snack with a piece of fruit. A banana or apple costs around 20p - a third of the price of most chocolate bars or crisps. Don’t throw away vegetables which are about to go out of date. Use them in stews, soups and casseroles which you can freeze and eat another time.
Youngsters more savvy about saving than adults Young people have a thing or two to teach their elders about being financially savvy. Whether it’s the impact of the economic climate or seeing their parents struggle to make ends meet, the younger generation is getting the message about overspending and the necessity of saving rather than borrowing. Out of 1,000 parents and children
who participated in a savings survey, 81 per cent of youngsters say they have their own bank accounts and have deposited money over the last year. By comparison the average adult consumer has borrowed £4,221, not counting their mortgage. Even children who are too young to get summer jobs are finding ways to save, with 78 per cent saying they save some

What are head lice and nits? Head lice are tiny grey/brown insects. They are about the size of a sesame seed. Head lice cling to hairs but stay close to the scalp, which they feed off. Head lice lay eggs, which hatch after 7-10 days. It takes about 10 days for a newly hatched louse to grow into an adult and start to lay eggs. Treatment for head lice This will take 5-15 minutes to check each head, depending on hair length and thickness. It is also used as a treatment for head lice • Wash the hair in the normal way with ordinary shampoo. • Rinse out the shampoo and put on
lots of ordinary conditioner. • Comb the hair with a normal comb to get rid of tangles. • When the hair is untangled switch to a detection comb. This is a special fine-toothed comb. • Slot the teeth of the detection comb
into the hair at the roots so it is touching the scalp. • Make sure that all parts of the hair are combed by working around the head. • If you see any lice, clean the comb by wiping it on a tissue or rinse it before the next stroke. • After the whole head has been combed, rinse out the conditioner. • Repeat the combing procedure in the wet hair to check for any lice that might have been missed the first time. This needs to be carried out every 3 to 4 days to catch the lice as they hatch.
Working to smash stereotypes Top tips for a perfect The stereotype of mums dropping everything at work and running home when their child has so much as a night’s sleep sniffle has been smashed by a new report into families working in the UK. The study has found women are more engaged at work than men and there is no difference between parents and non-parents regarding levels of commitment to work and professionalism. The Happy Homes Productive Workplaces report also reveals work stress is more damaging to relationships at home than home stress is to work. The study by the One Plus One relationships research charity and Working Families suggests
or all of their pocket money. At the start of 2014, seven out of 10 of us say we are keeping a closer eye on our budgets in a bid to be prudent and financially savvy.
employers should recognise how the two spheres impact on each other and how reducing work stress can create a virtuous circle, bolstering home relationships which can help employees through difficult times in the workplace.
Bedtime should be a chance to unwind, forget the stresses of the day and relax with a good book or a warm drink, before drifting off into a blissful state of sleep. However, the reality is quite different for many people, who find going to sleep an ongoing nightly battle. If you are one of those people who lie awake wondering how some people just seem to drift off effortlessly with no trouble at all, then you may find these top tips quite handy. In order to keep ourselves happy and healthy, both in mind and body, there are several steps that you need to take. Many of us know the importance of eating a healthy, balanced diet and making time to exercise and get our cardio levels up, but some people do not consider the importance of sleep in maintaining the body and keeping you in tip-top condition. Top tips for a perfect nights sleep: Choose a big enough bed Say no to caffeine before bed Take steps to unwind Regulate body temperature Have a warm bath before bed

GETTING ORGANISED
There always seems to be so much to do when trying to arrange a child’s party and never enough time to do it in. Organisation is the answer.
INVITATIONS
About three weeks before the party, you’ll need to send out written invitations. They should include the following information: • Your child’s name and which birthday they are celebrating. • Your address and phone number. • The date, start and finish times of the party. • If you’re having a themed party, your invitation should make it

clear if the guest needs to dress up. • You may need a small map if you’re inviting children whose parents haven’t been to your home before - the same applies if you’re holding the party at a venue that may not be familiar to all guests. It’s also a good idea to ask on invitations for mums to make it clear if their child has any allergies or special dietary requirements – remember to follow this up when you’re organising the party food on with the seating arrangements on the day. Personalised invitations made on your home PC are terrific fun. If you are having a themed party, set the scene right from the start with the party invitation.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT NURSERY FOR YOU AND YOUR CHILD
A B C D E F G H I J K L MN O P Q R S T U V W X Y Z To help both you and your child, it is critical that both of you are happy and confident with your choice of nursery. Knowing that your child is in a safe, high-quality environment as you go to work or training is hugely reassuring. You should always visit more than one nursery before you make a decision about where you wish to place your child. This will give you a better view of the variety of nurseries available as some will suit you and your child’s individual needs more than others. First of all you need to look at what nurseries are available in your area. You should consider what is going to work best for you; for example, do you want a nursery near home or work/college? As part of this, you should think about what will work for your child, for example, if you have a long commute it may be preferable to locate a nursery on your route. Once you have shortlisted the nurseries you wish to visit, contact the nursery and ask for information about what they do and offer. High-quality nurseries will either have a brochure/prospectus or set of information they can send you in the post or a website which you can visit. This will help you to gain more information about their services, fees and environment before you visit and allow you to collate the questions you wish to ask based on this information. Once you have made your appointments to visit the nurseries you will need to think about the questions you want to ask, what you want to look for and note the legal requirements the nursery has to follow. Nurseries come in all shapes and sizes, and you and your child may prefer a larger or smaller nursery or one that offers a particular service - you should take your child on these visits to help you understand what they may prefer.
Where children come first! - After school care for children aged 5–11 - Limited baby and pre school spaces - Open 8am-6pm, 50 weeks a year

When you first arrive at the nursery for your appointment you should note your first impressions. Ask yourself: • Are there dedicated parking spaces, or somewhere you can pull in easily to take your child out safely? • How does the nursery operate its entry system? • Upon answering the door was the member of staff welcoming, polite, friendly and professional? Was the door answered in a prompt manner? • Does the nursery have a friendly, clean and safe feel to it from those first impressions? Remember if you are not happy with any aspect of the nursery, look elsewhere, and if you leave the visit and have further questions, any quality nursery will be happy to answer these over the phone, or welcome you for a further visit.

BENEFITS OF HOME COOKING When it comes down to feeding your body and mind, nothing is superior to preparing your food from scratch, with quality ingredients and served with love. If you have never experienced this phenomenon then try it out for 90 days and see how you feel. Come to that, see how your family feels as you work together in the kitchen to create a level of harmony and good health that is only possible when food is prepared in a loving manner, and eaten slowly with others. OK, so no excuses about time and schedules and…and…and. Instead let’s take a look at why preparing your food is a win-win situation for everyone.
1. SAVES MONEY
Packaged and prepared meals cost you considerably more than cooking with raw ingredients at home. Preparing meals at home can save you money. Just by bringing your homecooked leftovers to work for lunch can save you a cool £50 each month. Other ways to save money include buying your food in bulk, using store coupons, eating more vegetarian meals, buying on sale and freezing for later use.
5. AVOID FOOD POISONING
When preparing meals at home you can better control the temperatures when cooking meats, keep hands and countertops clean and properly wash your raw produce.
6. BETTER ENERGY
2. SAVES TIME
Food can be healing medicine or it can deplete your energy and cause sickness and pain. This may sound dramatic, but the truth is that whoever is cooking is in charge of the people we become.
3. LESS SALT AND TRANS FATS
Preparing meals at home and including family members in meal preparation is a way to give and share love. When food is prepared with a calm mind and loving thoughts it can become a tonic for both the physical body and the soul. Teaching children how to cook is a gift of health they will use for their entire lives and pass it on to their children and grandchildren.
In the time it takes to drive to a take away, place your order, wait for your order, return home and serve the meal, you could have made a three-course meal from scratch with time to sit and chew slowly. For those on a busy schedule, prepare half the week’s meals on a Sunday and the other half mid-week, which can allow time for relaxation or beneficial exercise. Food producers and restaurant chefs use higher levels of salt and fat to make their products taste better to the consumer. Preparing meals at home allows you to control the amount of salt and oils you use in your recipes. This in turn reduces the possibility of weight gain and clogged arteries.
4. BALANCED MEALS
Taking the time to plan your weekly menu not only helps to save time and money, but also provides a way to create meals with a balance of protein, carbohydrates and fat, plus all the essential vitamins and minerals needed for the adult and child’s body. When eating balanced meals your body feels satisfied, has fewer cravings and this in turn prevents late-night snacking.
7. BRINGS FAMILY TOGETHER
8. WEIGHT CONTROL
Plates have gone from 10 inches in 1990 to 12 inches in 2013. With larger portions people tend to eat more, but cooking at home allows you to control serving sizes and prevent overeating. Buy locally, in season, the best quality food, organic when possible. When cooking from scratch you know exactly what is going into your recipes. The choices you make can keep you healthy and help prevent weight gain, digestive troubles and allergic reactions.

FULL MARKS FOR HAPPY P Discipline, quality teaching and happiness are top of the class when it comes to parents’ priorities in their children’s schools. The results of a huge UK-wide survey into parental attitudes have revealed the top five areas mums and dads consider most important when evaluating their children’s education. Surprisingly, exam results don’t even figure in the league and rarely even hit the top ten for most schools. And while the focus may change as children grow, the core five essentials remain a constant for parents of both primary and secondary school pupils. School discipline, teaching quality and the child’s happiness claim the top three spots but parents are also focused on control of bullying and believe caring teachers are essential. However, empathetic teachers are more important to the parents of girls while boys’ parents rate potential development higher.

We all know our world is changing rapidly and our children will be earning a living in ways we have not yet imagined. So how can we best prepare them? Explorium, an exciting new creative learning agency has some answers. “We find ways to unlock the potential of children, beyond what they learn in school or at home, so that they are ready to enter the real world following their passions and working to their strengths” says Explorium’s founder, Julia Black. “We focus on the 21st Century 4C skills; Creativity, Collaboration, Critical thinking and Communication.” If you would like your child to experience learning in a 4C context Explorium are holding a Video Game Jam in February half term. “We’re calling all 7 to 11 year old artists, writers, techies, mathematicians and gamers to come armed with their ideas, open minds and a huge abundance of creativity. We will spend three days together to plan, design, and produce a video game prototype.” To find out more email info@explorium.co.uk.

PUPILS Overall, when parents were asked how satisfied they are with each of the different areas of their child’s school, they are most satisfied with their happiness. The statistics also show that as children progress through their education, parents’ concerns change. Parents whose children are preparing for exams obviously place greater importance on academic issues. Or, looking at parental views on academic subjects, history invariably scores well at the vast majority of schools, while religious studies nearly always rates poorly - apart from at Catholic schools, where it can outshine the study of the past. The finds - the results of more than 420,000 parental surveys conducted by schools across the country - were revealed at the launch of the Knowing your Parents briefing paper published by the National Governors’ Association and Kirkland Rowell Surveys, part of GL Performance.
