West Somerset Railway Between Bishops Lydeard (near Taunton) & Minehead, 20 miles of steam travel. New for 2014: West Somerset Railway Augmented Reality Heritage Hunter App.

FUN WITH OWLS Willow and Beech classes from St Cuthbert’s Infant School enjoyed a fantastic sunny day recently at Puxton Park. The children had a train ride, looked at lots of different animals in their habitats and learnt about birds of prey. Some of the birds were brought round for them to have a good look at and they experienced them swooping down close to them during the display. Two of our reception children stood very still whilst George the Owl came down to perch and land on their arms! There was lots to do and it was a lot of fun.

COXLEY’S ALL ROUND SUCCESS Coxley Primary School has had a brilliant summer! Apart from working hard and making significant progress on academic subjects, teachers have also found time to enthuse the children in a range of other activities. It all started with the success of a budding writer. Harry Llewellyn’s story made it through to the second round of the Radio 2500 Word Story Competition – that was out of 118,632 entries which is a wonderful achievement. The same story also won the World Book Day story writing competition at the school. It will be printed and there will be a presentation with the author who has offered to sponsor the printing before the end of term. Pupils also took part in the Festival of Dance held at the Blue School which was great fun. At the Summer Fair last month pupils and parents and friends not only raised an amazing £860 but the Friends of Coxley also secured £700 match funding from Santander making their total £1560. Sport’s day was another great success with pupils enjoying a wide range of games and competitions in the lovely sunshine.

ART AT DITCHEAT The children at Ditcheat Primary School were asked to select the art medium they wished to use and then draw whatever they wished. The art workshop was one of the afternoons where parents joined the children in different art tasks, including embossing, quilling, pointillism and collage. It was great to see everyone so involved. Even the younger children sketched in the local park as an observation task. The children had a full week of music with a concert on the last day. Other art included dance drama, singing and various art lessons, visitors included a drama teacher and a film producer fresh from Cannes. The children had a wonderful week much enjoyed by everyone.

Would your child love to make their own films, radio shows or video games?

PANELS ON DISPLAY AT GLASTONBURY Willow class children at Ditcheat Primary School have created and showcased their finished work on hessian panels to be displayed at Glastonbury Pop Festival. The children were invited to design the panels with a focus on a greener cleaner planet. The children drew sketches first and then bits were taken from these and incorporated into the panel and all the children in Willow class then painted them adding in extras as they went along. It has taken a few weeks to finally complete the task and a few brightly coloured children (paint in hair etc.) but they all enjoyed having the experience of painting onto hessian.

UNIQUE OPPORTUNITIES FOR 21ST CENTURY LEARNING The ease at which children use technology these days is amazing but how many times, as a parent, do you find yourself asking your child to put away their tablet only for them to plead for ten more minutes? If only you could turn their obsession with gaming into something positive? Imagine if they could become producers of content rather than just consumers? Wouldn’t it be fantastic if your child could improve their writing and maths skills, and develop their communication and critical thinking abilities at the same time as becoming digitally fluent in game, web or app design?

Would you love them to have extra tuition in english and Maths? Call 01458 274 050 to find out how all of this, and more, is possible.

ARTISAN MARKET SHARE SUCCESS WITH STUDENTS Now in its second year the Artisan Market at Browne’s Garden Centre in Wells has launched a new initiative, they are giving students the fantastic opportunity to sell their items at this unique event on Saturday 26 July. Artisan Market’s would like to promote young artisans who are just starting to learn their craft and exploring opportunities whilst still in full or part-time education in Somerset. Vanessa Lancaster from Artisan Market said “We appreciate that for a lot of students the cost of taking a stall would be prohibitive so we are offering four students who can demonstrate excellent skills for food, craft or gifts the chance to join us. The stalls will be £5 for these students and they would sell directly to the public, gaining valuable experience and confidence”. The summer Artisan Market will be at Browne’s Garden Centre on Saturday 26 July from 10.30am to 4pm, stalls are now limited so anyone interested in attending should contact vanessa@vlancaster.co.uk or call into the Garden Centre.

CYGNET NAMES ANNOUNCED For the past fortnight visitors and followers of The Bishop’s Palace in Wells have been offering name suggestions for the latest set of cygnets on the moat. Resident palace swans, Wynn and Brynn introduced their second set of cygnets to the moat on the 1st of May, 2014 and the Palace can now reveal their new names. Joining Peter and Jane - the first two cygnets named by The Bishop’s Palace in honour of the incoming Bishop of Bath & Wells, the Right Rev’d Peter Hancock and his wife, Jane - are; 1. Ben, 2. Bignal, 3. Bonny, 4. Fynn, 5. Gloria, 6. May, 7. Webster, 8. Peter, 9. Jane “Thank you to everyone who took the time to send us your names, the winners; Nadia, Jane, Margaret, Ave, Sarah, Robert and Jo have been notified and will receive two adult day tickets to The Bishop’s Palace to come and decide which cygnet looks like theirs!” The tradition of swans ringing a bell started in the 1870’s when the daughter of Bishop Hervey first taught a pair of resident swans to do just that. Clumps of bread are tied to the rope, which attracts the swans and cygnets to nibble at it and pull it off, when they do this the bell rings. Gradually less and less bread is tied onto the rope as they begin to understand that by pulling the rope and hearing the bell means food will soon follow. Though this does not need to happen in 2014. People are still able to watch the swans and cygnets on the Palace’s Swan Cam: www.bishopspalace.org.uk/swan-watch

FOREST SCHOOL TRIP have made it an integral part of their curriculum. The primary purpose of the grant funding towards the waterproofs will support and encourage children to be involved in conserving and enhancing the AONB through raising awareness of their local environment. This project has a community benefit in that it links local schools with their immediate environment providing a creative and enriched experiences outside of the classroom and children who don’t necessarily flourish in the classroom will be able to flourish hugely in an environment that will be made easier to access in all weathers.

The children at Priddy School are all dressed up in new waterproofs, funded by the Mendip Hills AONB Sustainable Development Fund and are heading off in their new minibus on their Forest School Trip! The head teacher, staff and governors of the federated schools of Priddy and St Lawrence’s, have enthusiastically embraced the Forest School ethos and

So far this year, we have visited the nature reserves of Ubley Warren, Black Rock, Westhay Moor and Harridge Woods. We have taken part in the Big School Bird Watch, stream dipping, experienced forest school activities at a nearby site that included cooking over an open fire and using tools and we even had a visit by the Hawk and Owl Trust to both schools with barn owls, that also included the children dissecting owl pellets!

PARENT

PAGES Getting kids into nature starts at home A lack of safe and family-friendly green spaces, too much traffic and stranger danger are stopping parents letting their children play outdoors. Excessive health and safety rules, the rise in popularity of computer games and indoor entertainment, and demanding school days are also to blame for barring children from connecting with nature. And the research by the National Trust warns that parents need more support to make the outdoors a part of everyday family life to avoid rearing a generation completely cut off from the natural world. The Natural Childhood Inquiry - which sought submissions from experts and the public on the barriers and the solutions for children’s connection with nature - found that children’s

When to start the pension pot If scaremongering headlines are to be believed, Britain’s population is sleepwalking into a pension crisis. Or, perhaps more accurately, we’re all too busy posting pictures of tonight’s tea on social media platforms, catching up with all those TV shows we missed, and working increasingly long weeks to notice the rather ominous skies forming overhead. And they said the

love of nature is best started in the home. The inquiry follows a report for the Trust by award-winning nature author and wildlife TV producer Stephen Moss which documented children’s declining connection with the outdoors and nature. Respondents said parents need more access to family-friendly, green and natural spaces, as well as more opportunities for children to enjoy the great outdoors. As part of its response to the lack of connection between kids and nature the National Trust launched its 50 Things to do before you’re 11 campaign in May. More than 250 Trust places took part, and in the first two months more than 200,000 activity scrapbooks given away and nearly 20,000 users registered on the 50 Things website.

financial crisis was over. So what does this mean, apart from the fact that Westminster’s attempts to plug the everwidening pensions gap isn’t going far enough? Well, for one thing, it means there should be no perceived bottom age at which you begin paying in to that pot for the future. Indeed, most experts now say you should begin saving for those golden years the moment the first pay cheque hits your bank account. Of course, for many people carrying around student loans and other forms of credit, this may not be easy, but nonetheless you get the picture.

The big decision: Why you should probably switch energy suppliers Whether you receive your bill monthly or quarterly, pay on receipt of the charges or by direct debit, chances are when the utility costs are finally tallied up it’s never great news. Just how much do they think these services are worth, anyway?
According to the energy industry regulator, Ofgem, the majority of gas and electricity customers have never switched provider. Ever. If you’re not as astonished as we were, then evidently you’ve moved house once or twice, which can force your hand when it comes to who gives you light and heat. Or perhaps you already understand everything we’re about to say on the importance of using the right to decide, which every customer has in the blessed world of open market competition. If you’re still here, though, let’s assume you’re one of the

Avoid childhood obesity with breakfast As time-starved Britons continue to work longer and longer hours, increasing the chances that the family won’t eat together during the day at all, let alone for both the first and last meals, a new study suggests it has never been more important to ensure that adults and kids sit down to break bread in the same place, at the same time. There are, of course, several factors that need to be taken into account, although they all suggest that a shared meal is much better for the family unity as a whole. In addition to the obvious forming of bonds and displayCould of interestyou in onehelp another that another woman usually help make a happy homestead, breakfasts made by an adult are much more likely tobecome be nutritiousaand good for the mother? youngster, which probably won’t shock anyone blessed with a sugar-addicted adolescent.

majority contributing to the collective £3.5bn per year utility over-spend currently taking place in the UK. That’s a lot of money, and obviously there are a lot of people falling foul of the problem, but even when it’s broken down on an individual basis, there’s a fair amount of cash involved. So what’s putting many of us off switching gas and electricity suppliers? Well, quite simply, it’s the incorrect perception that trying to gauge which provider would make us better off, and the process of changing accounts itself, is a hassle. In reality, the truth couldn’t be more different, with a host of online comparison websites and tools available for free. In short then, take five minutes and seize the opportunity; we guarantee it will prove to be worth your while.

PLAYSTATION VITA : PETS Parents need to know that PlayStation Vita Pets is a downloadable pet simulation game with an adventure twist. Kids get to adopt, care for, and play with a puppy of their choice, learning about responsible pet ownership in the process. They’ll take their puppy out for walks in a vast park behind their house, following an adventure on a map that includes puzzles and challenges that incorporate the tricks and skills your pet learns. There’s even a bit of (mildly crude) poop-andscoop humor to help remind kids to clean up after their pups.

NINTENDO 3DS : POKÉMON ART ACADEMY Grab your stylus and start your Pokémon-drawing journey in Pokémon Art Academy, only on Nintendo 3DS family systems! This Pokémon-themed iteration of the Art Academy series offers budding illustrators and Pokémon fans alike 40 lessons to learn how to paint, sketch and draw with beloved Pokémon characters. Along the way, students of Pokémon Art Academy can pick up actual illustration skills that they can transfer onto real canvas or paper, or share their digital masterpieces with the world. Release date 4th July.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT NURSERY FOR YOU AND YOUR CHILD To help both you and your child, it is critical that both of you are happy and confident with your choice of nursery. Knowing that your child is in a safe, high-quality environment as you go to work or training is hugely reassuring. You should always visit more than one nursery before you make a decision about where you wish to place your child. This will give you a better view of the variety of nurseries available as some will suit you and your child’s individual needs more than others. First of all you need to look at what nurseries are available in your area. You should consider what is going to work best for you; for example, do you want a nursery near home or work/ college? As part of this, you should think about what will work for your child, for example, if you have a long commute it may be preferable to locate a nursery on your route. Once you have shortlisted the nurseries you wish to visit, contact the nursery and ask for information about what they do and offer. High-quality nurseries will either have a brochure/ prospectus or set of information they can send you in the post or a website which you can visit. This will help you to gain more information about their services, fees and environment before you visit and allow you to collate the questions you wish to ask based on this information.

“Children make excellent progress in their learning and development within a safe, secure, calm and vibrant environment.” Ofsted 2012 “Children make exceptionally good progress in developing skills for the future.” Ofsted 2012 We take children from 3 months to school age. 3 & 4 year old places available

Once you have made your appointments to visit the nurseries you will need to think about the questions you want to ask, what you want to look for and note the legal requirements the nursery has to follow. Nurseries come in all shapes and sizes, and you and your child may prefer a larger or smaller nursery or one that offers a particular service - you should take your child on these visits to help you understand what they may prefer. Remember if you are not happy with any aspect of this nursery, look elsewhere, and if you leave the visit and have further questions, any quality nursery will be happy to answer these over the phone, or welcome you for a further visit.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS COUNT When you first arrive at the nursery for your appointment you should note your first impressions. Ask yourself:

Are there dedicated parking spaces, or somewhere you can pull in easily to take your child out safely? How does the nursery operate its entry system? Upon answering the door was the member of staff welcoming, polite, friendly and professional? Was the door answered in a prompt manner? Does the nursery have a friendly, clean and safe feel to it from those first impressions?

BEACH GAMES 1. Fill the Bucket - This is the beach version of a classic party game. You will need two large buckets and two smaller buckets or cups. Separate the family into two equal teams and place the buckets up on the sand, about 50 feet from the edge of the water. At the word “go,” the first person on each team races to the water, fills the smaller bucket or cup and runs back to dump it into the big bucket. Once the person has dumped the water, the cup is handed to the next person on the team who repeats the process. You can continue the game until the buckets are full, or set a time limit and see who can put the most water in the bucket before time is up. 2. Sharks and Minnows - This beach game can be played on the shore or in shallow, still water. One person is designated as the shark, with the other players being the minnows. If the players are older, blindfold the shark to make the game more challenging. The shark has to tag the minnows as they run around the shark. As each minnow is tagged, he or she becomes a member of the shark’s team and now help the shark tag the rest of the minnows. The last person who is tagged is crowned the fastest minnow. 3. Sand Darts - There are many ways to play this beach game. One of the easiest is to draw a large circle in the sand, with several concentric circles inside that one. The players stand several feet away from the dartboard and toss pebbles or shells onto the sand trying to get as close to the centre as possible. 4. Channel Race - This beach game works best if there is a slight slope leading to the water. You will need as many ping pong balls as there are teams. Each team digs a channel from the starting point to the water. At the starting line, the teams set a ping pong ball into the channel, then dump buckets of water into the channel so that the ball moves down to the water. The longer the channel, the louder and more frantic the race becomes. 5. Beach Golf - You can use any kind of Frisbee or flying disk for this beach golf game. It can be as simple or as complicated as you would like. Set out a number of objects such as overturned buckets, plastic water bottles and umbrellas on the course and have each team try to hit the goals in order.

6. Bocce Ball - Also called bowling or boules, this is a classic beach game in many parts of the world. You can invest in an actual bowling set, or make your own with one small ball and one larger ball for each player. One player throws the target ball onto the sand, and each player has to toss the ball, trying to get as close to the target ball as possible. Check out the rules of beach bocce at beachbocceball.com. 7. Beach Ball Balancing Act - This beach ball game is fun for all ages and is easy to play. You need one inflatable beach ball for every team of two players. The players try to carry the ball across a finish line without using their hands. The ball can be balanced between their heads, pressed between their backs while walking backwards or set between their stomachs and crab-walked to the end. 8. Shell Sort - Sorting shells is a fun way to start a new collection and also teach the little ones a thing or two. Have each child run up and down the beach gathering as many different kinds of shells as they can. Draw a grid in the sand and have them sort the shells into different categories; the kids can sort them by colour, size or type. Make it even more interesting by combining two elements; keeping each large white shell together and each small brown shell together.

SAFE IN THE SUN The weather is warming up, the days are longer and there’s more time to be outside doing all kinds of fun things. But if you’re going to be out in the sun, especially on a hot day, you need to stay safe. Let’s find out how.

DON’T FEEL THE BURN

Even though the sun is hot, it does cool things. It keeps us warm. It makes flowers and plants grow. It even gives us vitamin D so we can better absorb calcium into our bodies for strong bones. It does all these things by sending down light, which includes invisible ultraviolet rays. These are also called UV rays. Some ultraviolet rays pass through air and clouds and penetrate the skin. When your skin’s been exposed to too many of these rays, you get what’s known as a sunburn. Ouch! Some people get a sunburn faster than others because of their colouring. If you have blond or red hair, light-coloured skin, and light-coloured eyes, you’ll tend to get sunburn more quickly than someone with dark eyes and skin. That’s because you have less melanin. Melanin is a chemical in the skin that protects it from sun damage by reflecting and absorbing UV rays. People with darker skin have more melanin, but even if you have dark hair, dark eyes, or darker-toned skin, you can still get a sunburn. It will just take a little bit longer. Sunburns look bad and feel worse. They can cause blisters on your skin. They can keep you inside feeling sore when everyone else is outside having fun. They increase your chance of getting wrinkly when you get older. And worst of all, they can lead to skin cancer when you are an adult. Because getting wrinkles and getting sick don’t happen right away, they can seem like things that could never happen to you. But you still need to be careful.

PRIME TIME

You don’t need to hide from the sun completely or wrap up like a mummy to protect yourself. But you should take these two steps: Always wear sunscreen. Take frequent breaks from the sun by going indoors or moving into the shade. These steps are especially important between 10:00 in the morning and 4:00 in the afternoon, when the sun’s rays are strongest. Use a sunscreen with an SPF rating of 30 or higher. Put on sunscreen 15 to 20 minutes before going out in the sun. The letters SPF stand for sun protection factor, and the number rating tells you how much longer you can stay in the sun without getting sunburned. But this isn’t always true, so reapply sunscreen at least every 2 hours, just to be safe. Do this more often if you’ve been swimming or sweating a lot — even if the sunscreen is waterproof. And remember that you can get sunburned more quickly when you’re swimming or boating because the reflection from the water intensifies the sun’s rays. Be sure to put sunscreen all over your body. This includes some places you might not think of, like the tops of your ears, the back of your neck, the part in your hair, your face, and the tops of your feet. You may need some help reaching the back of your body

so ask your parents or friends to give you a hand. If you want to block the sun’s rays, wear clothing that you can’t see your hand through. You may still get burned through more sheer fabrics. Wear a baseball cap or other fun hat to block your face from the sun. Don’t forget that your eyes need protection from ultraviolet rays, too. Always wear sunglasses in the bright sun, and make sure they have a label saying that they block UV rays.

DRINK UP!

Drinking water is an important part of staying healthy, especially when it’s hot outside. When you’re sweating, you lose water that your body needs to work properly. And if you’re playing a sport or running around in the sun, you lose even more water, because you sweat that much more. So drink up and don’t wait until you’re thirsty — drinking before you feel thirsty helps keep the water level in your body from dropping too low (dehydration) when it’s hot or you’re sweating a lot with exercise. If you forget and suddenly feel thirsty, start drinking then. There are lots of cool-looking water bottles around, so get one you really like, fill it up, and drink up!

GOT THAT HOT FEELING?

If you’re out in the hot sun or you’re exercising on a hot day, it’s easy to get heat exhaustion. Kids get heat exhaustion when their bodies can’t cool themselves fast enough. A kid with heat exhaustion might feel overheated, tired, and weak. Heat exhaustion can come on suddenly. A person may just collapse when playing soccer or tennis, for example. It can leave someone feeling really tired for days after it happens. Heat stroke is a more serious heat-related illness and can cause someone to stop sweating; to have red, hot skin; and to have a high temperature. The person might become uncoordinated, confused, or even lose consciousness. It requires emergency medical attention. Be sure to tell an adult if you’re hot and you have a headache or feel dizzy or nauseated (like you’re going to throw up). The grown-up will want to get you out of the sun, give you liquids to drink, and take you to a doctor, if necessary. The good news is that the sun doesn’t have to be your enemy if you wear your sunscreen, drink your water, and take breaks when you start to feel too hot. And don’t forget your sunglasses. Not only do they protect your eyes from the sun, they make you look so cool!

PARTY TIME GETTING ORGANISED - INVITATIONS

About three weeks before the party, you’ll need to send out written invitations. They should include the following information: • Your child’s name and which birthday they are celebrating. • Your address and phone number. • The date, start and finish times of the party. • If you’re having a themed party, your invitation should make it clear if the guest needs to dress up. • You may need a small map if you’re inviting children whose parents haven’t been to your home before - the same applies if you’re holding the party at a venue that may not be familiar to all guests. It’s also a good idea to ask on invitations for mums to make it clear if their child has any allergies or special dietary requirements – remember to follow this up when you’re organising the party food on with the seating arrangements on the day. Personalised invitations made on your home PC are terrific fun. If you are having a themed party, set the scene right from the start with the party invitation.
